The first time in Kristen's chair and I felt like I already had long hair when she was done simply because she is an expert at cutting and knew exactly how to clean up the bad cut and give me results that I loved instantly. I asked Emily what she thought I should do with my hair and she said she really liked my current cut and suggested a trim, taking off a half-inch. I was pleased with her honest judgement: I had gotten a cut in Montreal a few months back and was very happy with the cut except it was overgrown. She trimmed it quickly yet skillfully, blow dried my coarse wavy hair into a flattering style and then trimmed and textured the ends so the cut lays well. Best of all, my hair looks great even when I don't heat-style it. Dried naturally, the waves are nicely layered and just seem to fall into place--a sign of a good cut. I've tried a lot of places in Elmhurst, but this is the first place where I've gotten a great cut at a reasonable price ($35 with first-time customer discount, not incl. tip). This isn't a cutting-edge, hyped up salon--it's a comfortable, relaxed place, mostly patronized by middle-aged moms like me (as far as I could tell from my weekday afternoon visit). No frills, easy-going, no blasting music, no product-pushing. Just a great cut and great service. I'll be back! One pet peeve I have is when beauticians try to tell me how bad my hair is and how much I need a deep conditioner. She made the most of my thin hair and didn't say anything bad. Kayla Sanderson is one of the resident make-up artists at Hair Encounter. She spoke with me prior to my day and happily answered all my questions. She was prompt and ready when I arrived. She uses Bare Minerals and did a wonderful job! Give her photos of your ideas and she re-creates it exactly. Her fee is much lower than other area salons. I suggest that the salon give her a station with better lighting. The make-up looked cake-y when she put it on, but when I went to have my hair done in a different chair, it looked beautiful in higher light. Please don't make her apply make-up using fluorescent light. I will use Cheryl and Kayla again with no worries. I do not have to worry about what will happen.

I had explained that my hair is wavy and had only just grown out enough to lay straight -- I only wanted a very slight trim. Honestly, I feel and look so bad. But David was happy with his service.
