This was an okay experience overall. I had a reservation for a truck rental for a student film, and the checkout process itself was pretty smooth -- I was able to do most of it on my phone. There was a line when I arrived, but the employee working did a great job moving through everyone efficiently. There was some confusion with their internal hand‑off process, which was frustrating and slowed things down, but eventually I got my truck. The vehicle was clean and ran smoothly. The only downside was that the lock on the back was broken, so I had to buy my own -- hopefully that's been replaced by now. The return process, however, was super easy. I just dropped the truck off and left, and my final bill came through shortly after. Overall, a decent experience with a few bumps. read more

They ignored me when I was talking to them, making passive aggressive comments at other costumers while shaking their heads repeating how much they hate their job then taking it out on us. What was supposed to be $50 ended up being $200+. They close at 7pm and when I got there right on the dot with my truck I saw someone close the door and they denied me and told me I had to come back at 7am. When I did they climbed the roof of the truck and told me that I damaged the roof when I repeatedly told them you guys gave it to me like that. Convenient location in Manhattan right off the West Side Hwy. A friend told me I should book an advance as there might be long lines so I downloaded the app and booked a cargo van an hour before I needed it. Pick up was simple - walked in and showed my info and the van was ready right away. Drop off is easy as well. Staff at the pick up desk quite friendly for an early Sunday am. Few things to note - they add a $15.95 facility fee on top of everything for renting from the Chelsea location (seems absurd to me). Might want to refill gas on your own. I drove 14 miles and let them refill the gas. They charged me for 2 gallons but it's nearly impossible to have used that much gas going that short distance. I rented a cargo van, which looks small in the pictures, but when I arrived, they had graciously upgraded me to a larger version which was a little hard to drive through the streets of New York City. read more

Don't trust U-Haul to wire your trailer lights. They took my money and ran. Took my van in for a trailer hitch and wiring. Hitch no problem, the wiring was not finished. Technician left a rolled up wire in the back of my van. And said I would have to finish it myself. What did I pay for???? I go to pay the bill and the computer was down....said sorry we will send you a bill. Next day lights on my dash,something wrong with the wiring. I called and ask why I paid for the full price if the job wasn't finished?? I was told it was completed to there standard.....and it was tested. What a joke !!!!! Absolutely HORRIBLE staff, my reservation has been delayed due to the staff wanting to have a full conversation with other staffers while customers were waiting. I believe this is the manager here, she was not only rude and counterproductive but she practically was dragging her feet to help me. She told me i needed to call their service number to be helped just for the customer service to tell me to give her my phone for them to walk her through what she needed to do. read more

I feel compelled to chime in and re-review this location given what seems to be particularly unfair and inaccurate reviews. I literally rent vans from this U-Haul once or twice a week and have for more than two years now. The staff is BEYOND helpful, friendly and dependable. The manager Kurt is awesome. From Craig and the team who bring out the vans to Myra, Shakira and the team inside, they are all pretty amazing. Do the staff get irritated with customer from time to time? Sure. But who wouldn't given the way that many of the customers come in, barking orders and being rude and disrespectful to the staff. And while they don't have a 24 hour drop off, they do stay open later than most other U-Haul locations to accommodate that. It's Manhattan. I doubt any place has a 24 hour drop off due to a lack of space and/or crime. I hate seeing good people be diminished by people who write reviews just because they can, including those who've never even been inside or done business at this location. read more

I am so annoyed. I've been renting with Uhaul for years and started using this location. The counter staff has no sense of urgency and we rented out Uhaul at 8a and there was a small line but the employees moved so slowly that our reservation was delayed by 45 minutes. This putting our whole job production behind 45 minutes. That on top of charging $15 extra facility charge, so essentially I get charged more and have to pay my team more because of the delayed time. Horrible service I will be asking for a refund of facility charge. read more

I don't normally like to leave bad reviews but honestly the service here was so bad. The staff is so rude, every single staff member we encountered here has a complete attitude problem. Unfortunately this was the closest Uhaul to our home so we really didn't have a choice. I have never experience worse employees. Every question we asked was met with such attitude and were even asked to mind our tone just for asking a simple question. The woman working Saturday June 29th afternoon was extremely rude and confrontational, she even started raising her voice and laughing at us, unfortunately did not get her name. I rented a cargo van on March 14, 2022 and asked the lady at the cashier if I can return the vehicle after hours, and was told that that is possible. I spoke to her in the afternoon around 5pm. She told me that I would just have to visit uhaul.com and follow the steps, but when I did, I found a message on the front door of the store that they do not accept after hours drop offs. I called uhaul and was told that indeed they do not accept after hour drop offs. This lie caused me damages and a lot of problems. The cashier seemed like a person full of hatred for the customers and she intentionally lied to me. It caused me much harm. It had bad consequences for me. The next day, when I was able to return the vehicle, I asked her colleagues for her name and they all refused to give out her name. They told me that I am a liar as no person who works there would ever tell me that after hour drop offs are possible. I insisted on getting her name while writing this review. They didn't care at all about the harm that was caused to me. They all protected her. They lied to me and then called me a liar, even the manager. read more

DO NOT GO HERE. I really like U-Haul, and how flexible they are. However, this location has huge issues. First of all, the customer practices are deplorable. When you walk in, there are signs everywhere that tell you that the store does not have 24 hour key dropoff. This is a hallmark of U-Haul, and NOWHERE when making a reservation or checking in for pickup are you warned of this. Instead, you MUST return the vehicle by 8:45pm or turn it in at 7:00am the next day, ELSE get a second rental PLUS $50/hour for "inconveniencing other customers." On top of this, my reservation was for a 2:30pm truck pickup (the earliest they had). If you want 24 hour dropoff, you have to go out to Jersey or Brooklyn (their words - not mine) The pair picking up in front of me were told they had a 1/4 tank of gas, and that the location would not fuel it higher or give them a truck with more fuel to start with. They called it common practice to give out vehicles with little to no gas and have customers gas up first. This was after the couple had paid, and it was clear they had buyer's remorse. When I approached the counter, the attendant was audibly grumbling about the pair before me. He then asked me if I knew what time the store closed. I said "no" - not thinking of the signs about the dropoff, to which he curtly responded "it's in front of your face!" The process from there was honestly pretty hilarious, if it wasn't for the fact that I was spinning my wheels on how to make my move happen in 6 hours, when I had estimated online as prompted that it would take me 10 hours. All in all, the service is terrible and unyielding, and U-Haul would do well to really examine how their locations in Manhattan are being operated. Until then, GO SOMEWHERE ELSE. read more

Unhelpful staff. Worst uHaul I have ever been to. The staff are the most unhelpful I have ever seen. Avoid at all costs, if possible. And come prepared to receive vague information. You'll need to double and triple check all the information you receive. They also don't ever pick up their phone. I tried to return by truck after hours (which according to uHaul was OK) and there was nobody there to help me. I ended up being charged for an extra day, as well as $300 extra for breaking the key in the ignition, even though I had purchased their additional insurance. The corporation itself gave me the run-around concerning a speeding citation they claimed was tied to the vehicle I rented. I have a perfect/clean driving record. Then after having me file a dispute they didn't provide me any proof of the citation and charged my Capital One $65 more than three weeks after the rental was completed without any acknowledgement of my dispute. They did the same thing with a previous rental with no proof in place concerning toll charges in Manhattan. (They held on to my credit card number to charge my credit card without acknowledging me concerns, even though I called several times and filed a dispute.) Their system is glitchy. Customer service over the phone is not responsive, sluggish and follow-up is horrid. All I've gotten is robotic emails that don't provide answers. I waited several times for 20 or 20 minutes and was transferred to the same front-line people who could do nothing about my concerns, then had to wait again to no avail. I've reached a point with U-Haul that I don't think I'd ever rent a vehicle from them unless I'm absolutely desperate. It seems more sensible to rent a vehicle from car rental facility at a special rate or pay someone to taxi me to move something for me. I'm most disappointed in how U-Haul has operated, though some of the people at the Chelsea facility were very helpful with the rental itself. Horrid customer service response. It's moving day! So I reserved a van from the online store and set the pickup time for 10am. FYI, just because you have a reservation doesn't mean they will hold it. Whatever you set your time for, if you don't pick it up BEFORE then, then your reservation is cancelled! However, they don't charge you for it. Luckily they still had vans available and just redid my reservation very quickly. Van was good, service was fast, value is there. It got the job done. So why the 3 stars? Obviously all of it could be better, and there's a constant nickel and dime tactic that they use to make their margins. The van itself is cheap to rent, $19.99, but then the charge per mile, the insurance coverage, the utilities, etc really adds up quick. They're probably taking a loss on the vehicle rentals, but definitely make their weight in gold from the excessive markups in the other options. You also need to return the van back by 8:45pm that same day or you will have to park it overnight. And in the city with a van this size? Goodluck finding any type of parking. I also ended up getting a parking ticket (which cost more than the entire rental) because these vans are so easy for those meter maids to spot and come fine you with a quickness. read more

Horrible experience!!!! Booked this location for an 'after hours dropoff' for my move from Chicago. Drove 13 hours, unloaded the truck up 4 floors and brought the truck here, only to be presented with no way to drop it off. The location DOES NOT offer after hours drop off, even though the U-Haul website allows you to book it for such at 4am. The only reason I chose U-Haul over a Budget Truck was because of the close drop-off location to my new home. I would have saved $150 otherwise. After calling into customer service I was told it was MY FAULT for choosing the location - are you kidding me?!?! I then was told my only choice was to drive the truck to a 24 hour drop-off location in New Jersey. After being told by the customer service line that my info would be passed to someone regarding my issues to discuss compensation for my troubles. I was contacted by one of the local managers - Melissa a few days later and essentially told that they would only be refunding my Uber cost back from New Jersey. Never once did this horrible company or their manager genuinely apologize for this being an issue on their end. In fact, she even asked me why I chose to drop the truck off in New Jersey when THEIR REP told me that was the only option at 1 in the freakin morning. I've followed up multiple times after the initial offer for a ridiculous, insulting refund (for only the Uber cost and a $30 U-Haul credit) and Melissa has not responded. It's been over a month now. I highly suggest that if you're reading this, book your moving truck with another company! Save yourself the inconvenience and frustration of dealing with a company that doesn't understand how customer service works. This includes having to give 2 phone numbers of people who were then called and told that I was renting a van, and they were references in case I didn't return it. They just had to say "ok". You think you want to save money and you think that YOU want to HAUL-- but really, moving sucks and there comes a point where you wish you just spent more money and the move would take care of itself. I did a DIY move recently and here are the tips to make your Uhaul experience more do-able: - Reserve a truck. There are calculators to help you figure out the size. but don't forget ... bigger is better (that's what she said). - Make sure you get accessories -- dolly (consider 2!), moving blankets, etc. Then when you go to pick them up--- COUNT THEM because they won't do this for you and you might almost grab the wrong (lesser) amount - Get the first reservation slot and show up 15 minutes before they open. You'll avoid waiting in lines. note- your rental starts when you SAID you will pick it up- not when you actually pick it up. So don't f* that one up - spend a LONG time doing a walk around and point out every scratch dent etc before you sign off - Check the gas gauge and make sure you understand where the gas stations are located - Understand that the advertised price on the truck is about half of what you'll end up paying .. miles, gas .. they add up Everything was fine. Uhaul helped me to save hundreds of dollars. But I love this place as much as I love going to the dentist. read more

I rented a truck one way so I could get one month free storage deal they had. I was moving from downtown and storing in the Bronx. Scheduling was to be confirmed by "scheduling office" because it was not sure about the truck exact time of availability. We agreed that I would pick up a truck in Bk but at the last minute they told me the truck in Bk wasn't going to be available until after 3pm and I had an option to pick one in NJ. At this time there was little I could do, they didn't cover the toll for the tunnel and on top of that they charged me a service fee for the toll. That left me a bad taste in my mouth. READ IF MOVING OUT OF STATE My U-Haul reservation was canceled 72 hours before my moving date. I made my reservation on 8/02, today is 8/12, and I'm moving out of state on 8/15. I received a text today at 12:38pm that said "Dear Customer, we are trying to reach you to notify you we are currently sold out of one way trucks/trailers/towing. We apologize. Please call us...". I hopped on the phone with the reservation specialist who told me there are no one way vehicles available. My only option was to rent an in town van for $19.95/day and $2+ per mile, move everything out of state, and then drive the van all the way back to the city. I was informed that any U-Haul reservation is not confirmed until 48 hours prior to your reservation date. I am truly in disbelief that I was even able to make a reservation two weeks ago if the vehicle wasn't available. This sounds like a logistics nightmare - something that is NOT your customer's fault. The specialist was completely unapologetic and did not provide me with any suitable options. Tempers flared, I was not my best self over the phone, but with a 72 hour notice that I needed to find alternative options before moving out of state, I think any human being can understand the sheer stress and panic that overtook me this afternoon. Never never never will I rent a uhaul after this experience. I hope anyone moving out of state reads this and makes alternate plans. read more

I booked my reservation online to move my things from my apartment to storage. On my way there I decided to look at these yelp reviews and got a little worried. I went to the desk to check-in and was helped by Maddy. They were wonderful! We connected over being Californians, and they were super helpful and got my stuff sorted really quickly. They gave me the keys and I got to moving! When I returned the vehicle the person who helped me was very efficient and answered all my questions. At the end I received my total and it was 100% worth it. I didn't have much stuff, but I definitely think this was the best way to transport it all. I'm a student and I don't know anyone in the city with a car. So if you're looking for affordability and ease, come here!! I'd definitely do it again. $93.35 for 3 hours, and 13 miles in the cargo van. read more

Am I the only one who's had pretty good experience at this location? I rented a cargo van in one of the busiest moving seasons of the year: June 28 when everyone seems to be in some sort of spell to borrow a UHaul truck / van. I had all my paperworks ready, called them the day early to confirm my location (which was moved right next to my home to 25 mins away, but things happen and UHaul discloses that when you make your booking), and I was all ready to go when I checked in. There was some system issue that caused delays, but again, things happen. The only reason why I dinged a star was that they gave into this annoying girl who complained about waiting, and one of the employees ended up letting her cut the line. I'm pretty sure it is just this location, but the employees in the office seemed clueless and unhelpful. They also seem to be grossly understaffed, with most of the bays left empty so that it's difficult to find someone to help you with your reservation even after you have already picked up your keys. There were a ton of customers just running around between bays looking for an available employee. When I was confirming my reservation with the employee at the desk, I also had quite a difficult time understanding why the pads were in packs of 5 when in fact I had paid for 12. Turns out, this entire discussion with the employee was moot because there are actually 6 pads per pack (per the white plains office, where I dropped off the truck). LULZ. Finally, I had asked for a 10' truck but ended up with a 15' truck, which I was very uncomfortable with because it was much larger than I would have liked, but apparently they were completely booked up for 10' trucks and defaulted me to a 15' truck. Fine, as long as they didn't charge me additionally, but I did not appreciate this. The guy who helped me out with my truck was the only redeeming factor at the Chelsea location. He was helpful and took the time to show me how to change gears, lock/unlock the back, and also loaded my dolly and pads onto the truck without my asking. If you can rent from outside the city, I'd highly recommend it! read more

This is a large U-Haul facility off the end of Chelsea, and there are quite a few trucks here in an internal facility. Long lines, but at least 4-6 cashiers/registers to help expedite the services. Check in was smooth - two forms of ID for those not from NYC, though, and the costs were reasonable. $10 for insurance, so that wasn't bad, and explicit instructions and a clean, new van (only 138 miles). Returning was smooth, too, a line to get in, but once there, waited for the check, and then went inside to two lines that were specifically for return, and all was good at that point. One warning - the new moving vans have very slow gas gauges, so they don't immediately register how much gas you put in. A good rule of thumb - about every 8-10 miles you drive, put in a gallon of gas. They don't warn you or tell you this. read more

Uhaul is lucky they are the only rental companies around this area. Im sure 99% of the customers will choose some one else due to the terrible service. Why would uhaul have an App to check in to speed up the whole process . To literally avoid those terrible employees. But this location does not allow you use the app. So of course i have to wait on line for 30 min waiting to be helped. 1 cashier working shoot me in the face . Bottom line is i rent a truck maybe 1 or 2 a month for 1 day to 4 days at a time and its a total drag dealing with these employees that act like they don't want to be there. Well, I came here to write a scathing review about how this location doesn't offer late night drop offs, but it looks like several people have beat me to it. But anyways: THIS LOCATION DOES NOT OFFER LATE NIGHT DROP OFF! I went with a friend to pick up a uhaul and help him move. And when we went back to return the truck we were allowed to successfully end our uhaul reservation via the website. When I tried to find the key drop box, I saw 3 other customers equally upset and unable to return their uhaul. We tried calling uhaul and were all put on hold for a wait time of 20 minutes. All while a couple with their cars parked in front of the uhaul were kissing and making out. (This is important later.) While I checked the front entrance diligently for a key drop box I noticed a note stuck on the store door saying this uhaul location didn't accept returns after 8:45pm and uhaul trucks could be towed if they were parked in front of the store overnight and at the expense of the customer. Which made me wonder why I wasn't told this while picking up my uhaul earlier? Why had the website even allowed me to complete a uhaul return at this location? This is when the kind cross guard came over to warn me it to leave the truck there because it would be towed. He then told me I should have asked the two employees that were there just minutes ago. What two employees? THE TWO WHO WERE MAKING OUT IN FRONT OF UHAUL. As it turns out, just minutes before I showed up to return my truck, the two employees were locking up. These two employees stood there kissing each other and giggling while I was searching for a key drop box. While I was on hold with uhaul. I wasn't expecting them to reopen and let us return our uhaul trucks but they could have simply told me that they didn't accept late night returns. They could have given me the information I needed instead of see 3 customers struggling and ignore us. They had to be standing there kissing and giggling for 10-15 minutes before leaving. I also ended up returning my uhaul to the New Jersey location and they were kind enough to accept it even though I had not picked it up from that location. Not to be a Karen, but I've NEVER had this much difficulty returning a uhaul. read more
