I needed to rent a van to move my daughter to her college apartment in Boston from my home in Rhode Island and having used the UHaul app before for a rental, decided to do it again this time. Previously, the van was located at the front of the building and the keys in the safe on the side. Using the app was easy, pulling me along every step of the way, and I looked forward to using it again here. When I came by on the 1st, I noticed my van was not out front and drove to the back (this is a large building which also houses storage units). I looked around but didn't see the vehicle and so had to go inside. I went to the front desk and saw Jordan. I explained that I was using the app but didn't see my van, and he informed me that the van was out there in the lot and I needed to go find it. I thanked him and proceeded to go out to the lot to find my van, matching the serial number to the one showing on my screen. I looked inside but didn't see the keys. I drove back to the side of the building to the safe, as this is where the keys were the last time, but there was no code on the next screen. Confused, I drove back to the office and went back to Jordan. I explained that the keys were not in the van despite a search, and that there was no code for the safe. He then reached behind him, grabbed the keys on the wall, and handed them to me. I was annoyed before but seeing this, I felt compelled to say something. I said that he could have told me I had to come back for the keys and that they wouldn't be in the truck or in the safe. He told me that I wasn't there yet, meaning that I wasn't on the next page on my app when I saw him last. I said that's right, but that it would still have been nice to let me know what to expect, just from a customer experience perspective. Jordan maintained that because I wasn't there on the app yet, that telling me about the keys wasn't necessary yet. I was confused as I was just trying to offer helpful customer service advice, but Jordan didn't seem willing to listen to that. Our conversation grew heated, and I told him to stop interrupting me and listen. He agreed, and I relayed the entire scenario, sharing why this was frustrating as a customer, but he still interrupted. I told him he was interrupting me again, and he did stop and let me finish. I finished, and he proceeded to explain that I was arguing with him, and escalating the situation. I told him I wasn't, that I really was only interested in explaining what this felt like as a customer. When he said I was not and that I was only interested in arguing, I realized the issue was with him, and that further discussion was pointless. I asked him for his name, and he said it was Jordan King, adding on that he was a manager. I walked out, got the van (which was great), and returned the van later without issue. read more

We're moving out of state and I bought all of our boxes and paper tape from this U-Haul location in North Smithfield, RI. Very affordable and there's a container in the front with free used boxes donated by customers. The employees are always friendly and helpful (unlike the people in Cumberland on Mendon Rd) and the store is very clean and organized. Always a pleasant experience! read more

Ordering online through UHAUL was pretty simple. It let you choose and narrow down the area you were picking up from, what trucks were available at each UHAUL center and where you would be driving to. The process was easy to read and secure a reservation for "mobile" pick up or in person pick up. We chose the mobile as we weren't exactly sure of our pick up time. Everything was smooth except for trying to add a driver on the mobile app. So when I couldn't figure it out, I went inside and asked the desk agent to help me. WELL, you would have thought I asked the guy for one of his dang kidneys!! He grumbled, sighed and begrudgingly help me to add the name of a second driver. Am I seriously putting you out because I need help?? My favorite part was when he slammed through the doors to the truck we were renting and stormed back in. Seriously, if I could have added the driver myself I would have. Especially if you're going to be so upset that you're job in customer service actually means you have to use your customer service skills. Which in this case would be about a 2. But, he got the driver added. So, mission accomplished. When you're moving and already stressed out, the last thing you want is someone adding a layer of anxiety. And his shirt was embroidered with "General Manager". Hopefully he was just having an off day and isn't always like that. Truck was pretty clean, if not a bit smelly. (Hello, men's gym locker.) No major issues with the ride or truck itself. Handled well and got us from point A to point B. read more

I had Uhaul Smithfield install a hitch on my Toyota Sienna. They told me I was all set, but after I got home, I noticed the rear splash panel was completely removed. They were supposed to cut a slot into the panel so the hitch arm can be inserted and installed. If you watch the Uhaul video as well as YouTube you'll see how it's supposed to be installed around the panel. I called Uhaul and the person said to check back in the morning. I drove to Uhaul the next day and mentioned to the people working that I just had the hitch installed. One of them (Tom) said he knows and was going to call me. Tom said they didn't have a cutting tool for the panel when they installed the hitch. Told me that he just ordered one and it won't be in until next week and can cut and install the panel then. They also confirmed that they still have the panel they removed. Something doesn't add up here. How the heck does this Uhaul location not have a cutting tool??? The next week, I dropped off the Sienna for them to cut and reinstall the panel. Tom told me that only 5% of the customers want the panel reinstalled. He said the panel is just cosmetics and customers would rather not have a cut up panel when they go to sell their cars. First, even if only 5% of the customer want the panel to stay on, shouldn't they ask their customers before they remove it? Second, the panel is more than just cosmetics. These automakers have it installed to keep dirt, sand, water.. etc from getting up against the body. When I picked up the Sienna, I noticed that instead of removing the hitch to install the panel, they just cut the panel around the hitch (see picture). The panel now hangs loose by the arm. Caveat emptor when looking to install a hitch at Uhaul! Apparently, it's a corporate policy for them to remove the panel when installing a hitch and not give the customer an option. read more

Your guess is right. No dolly in the truck. The did refund me. But this place is a joke. I'd open up a competitor if I could and put uhaul out of business. I had a trailer hitch installed. I have no problem with the work performed. However to get the work done, you must schedule an appointment. Here's a tip for you; the appointment time is irrelevant. They will do the job at their pleasure. One, two, three hours later? They say the appointment is to drop the car off. Really? There's someone at the counter at all times. So why is an appointment necessary? If you want this type of work done, they are good at it. Just remember to keep your whole day open. read more

We went to have a hitch installed on our truck for our bike rack. It was important for us to know how long the work was going to take because later that same day, we had an appointment scheduled to pick up patio furniture. We needed the truck back for this appointment. I figured 3 or 4 hours would be more than enough time to install the hitch but when I asked the manager, Tom Sullivan, how long the work would take, he became extremely agitated and started giving us some strange speech about how we were not allowed to wait for the vehicle. After a deep breath and a little prayer, I asked him again but this time letting him know that it was not my intent to wait around his dusty environment for the vehicle, I just needed to know how long the work would take. Things went completely down hill from there. I guess there is something super sensitive with inquiring about how long hitch installation will take because this guy completely lost his mind. He ripped the mask off his face and came within a foot of me, screaming at the top of his lungs while his face turned a nice shade of cherry red, stating that if I didn't like the way they did things to get off his property. Needless to say, we never got to the point where they completed the work on our truck, so I can't speak on how good of a job they do but I can say that the manager at this location is completely unhinged and if you do decide to do business with them, make certain that you are well equipped with Holy Water and Rosary Beads because you are dealing with an extremely unbalanced individual and will need all the help you can get. Later that day I received a telephone call from someone calling on behalf of the manager of this UHaul location, offering to install the hitch free of charge. I declined and explained to them that it would have been so much nicer if I could have simply had a pleasant experience at UHaul and not have been humiliated and embarrassed by Mr. Sullivan. I don't think that being treated with politeness, respect and dignity would have been too much to ask and being offered free services in no way makes up for a manager that clearly needs some sort of intervention. read more

Have used in past with ok storage conditions, cannot say the mildew was all their unit as it was an old couch. Location is full service and convenient access. However, it is unacceptable is to show up the day prior to apartment closeout to pick up the keys and be told there is no storage unit held for my reservation. I advise you go pay for the unit a month prior even if you have a reservation, since I made 2 trips to ensure the unit was available (with a unit number given) and suitable, only to have them fail to hold the unit. Don't be fooled by the price. That's JUST for the truck. They charge a dollar PER MILE. If you use any of their equipment that's in the truck it's an extra fee. Plus you have to bring the truck back at the gas amount you left with. read more

Currently renting a Ubox for a cross country move. They called the night before to confirm the drop off window, and the next day they were entirely within that window (which is a rarity for any service these days). The delivery woman (Cheryl?) easily navigated our very difficult driveway, and set up the box so that it was out of the way but very easily accessible. When I called a few days later to reschedule the pick up date, Mike had no problem doing that for us, and promptly called back to confirm the new date after it had been approved. This morning, the day of pickup, Richard called to offer an additional day with the Ubox, as the awful weather yesterday made it impossible to get anything done. I was so appreciative that he had the foresight to offer that, and he said it would be no problem at all to change this. My only qualm is that tax is not included in the invoice online (since we are pinching pennies to rent the Ubox, it would have been nice to know of the additional $20 bucks owed at drop off, and I assume will also be owed on the pick up fee). This of course is the fault of corporate and has nothing to do with the excellent service at this uhaul location. read more

After a horrible experience in Cumberland we decided to see if this location had a truck available on the date we were moving. This place is large, clean and staff is friendly and helpful. Everything was clearly explained to us and the entire process was trouble free. We would highly recommend going to this location for a moving truck rental. read more

Sunday morning I contacted U-HAUL inquiring about getting a hitch set up on my Chevy Silverado. I asked when was the soonest I could get my truck in to get it done, I was happy to hear they said same day. I don't live to far from the location so I got there around 10am and spoke with Dawn who ensured me it would be all set and completed by 4pm the latest. I received a ride home since my truck is my only means of transportation, I also didn't want to sit an wait but instead spend time with my kids. So as the day got closer to 4pm I received a call at exactly 3:53pm but missed it and called back right away as I needed my truck so I could get things done. When I called back an spoke to Dawn she notified me that after having my truck for 6hrs (my only means of transportation) they DID NOT DO THE JOB! I was beyond disappointed I ended up walking down to the location pissed off to where they had a few excuses to why I wasn't called sooner but also that the hitch guy didn't wanna come in or they couldn't get ahold of him. Either way as a business they failed a customer by allowing me to go home and sit there for 6hrs just to be told they couldn't do it that day! I spoke with tom the next day (7/29/19) who obviously heard what happened, seeing he was the manager, but didn't seem to concerned and kept it short with our conversation. My truck was done today, yea they waived a $55 labor cost for the 6hrs I was without my truck for no reason but in the end still felt and feel like the situation was handled very poorly overall. THE worst service experience i have ever had. Not only was i told i had a late fee from a past rental that i received no explanation for, they wouldn't let MY FATHER purchase his own rental because my husband was with him. When i returned my last UHaul at a location that is now closed permanently mind you, they did a walk around said all was all set, and let us go. Now they're saying we owe a late fee when the rental was returned on time and in good condition like instructed...and we received no letter, e-mail, or phone call regarding any amount due. Worst customer service experience. I have never EVER been past due on a payment in my life and neither has my father, who has perfect credit, yet his account unrelated to mine was effected and unable to take a rental from this location.
