UPDATE: I returned the U-Haul this morning and talked to Chase, the manager. We discussed the issues I had and once he explained things, it all made much more sense. Chase wasn't feeling well yesterday and had to leave, leaving only one person to help customers. Chase made sure I left satisfies. I recommend this location and would rent from them again. I just love when companies hear you out and make you feel valued. Thank you, Chase!! This U-Haul location is horrible, both with their trucks and their customer service. The young woman that waited on me to check out had no clue what she was doing and the manager was little help. He looked like he didn't want to be there. Neither of the trucks doors close all the way unless you slam them like you're in a WWE match. The parking break does not work correctly, and when I called and asked to speak to the manager, he was gone. The assistant manager was too busy to provide any semblance of good customer service to me. Avoid this U-Haul like the plague. The truck I rented was in poor operating condition. There was less than 1/4 tank of gas when I got the truck. I was not informed of the myriad charges that would apply upon return. I drove the truck 13 miles total and used approximately 1/8 tank of gas. I returned the truck expecting to be charged $5 per gallon for what I thought would be a couple gallons. Instead I received a $30 fee plus a charge for 10 gallons of gas, an outrageous fee for 13 miles of driving. While the general manager,was willing to waive some of the fees, he reverted to a rigid "its company policy and in the fine print of the contract" response to any further accomodation. read more

I see now why this location has so many bad reviews. We had a 5 x 8 trailer reservation, got to the lot and we were promptly ignored for 30 minutes while we waited inside. The employee knew we were there, she had asked us to park on the street and we did, and then she casually went about her business, checking her phone frequently, while we stood waiting in the front lobby. I needed a trailer hitch as part of a planned cross-country move. This was the only location that claimed to have the parts and availability to install when I needed it, so I made an online reservation and prepaid $514. Today (8 days after I made the reservation and paid) I arrived ten minutes before my appointment time. When I checked in I was told my appointment had been changed to tomorrow afternoon, and further, they didn't have the necessary parts. I was never contacted about any of this. I showed them my email confirmation, and they refunded my $, but now I'm up a tree. I needed the hitch by today, and would have spent the last week investigating other options had I known they couldn't do it. Horrible business, shady and unreliable. Weirdest thing... are people just giving up in portland? You have a job, but do you do it? No one cares about anyone else enough to at least just make eye contact during an interaction? It's like land of the zombies. One of many reasons I'm moving from the city I've loved most of my life. Walked in at 9:30am to secure our truck reservation and all 3 employees were on their cell phones. We waited a minute til one of them motioned us to sit down at their desk to check in. But then he proceeded to stay on his personal phone for at least another couple of minutes. Finally he put his phone down. Whole interaction sucked. Super rude dude. I like to meet people's rudeness with kindness. He was unphased by anything. Probably still thinking about his instagram posts and that DM he was too busy writing to help us in the beginning. Anyway, very unprofessional and impersonal. I bet AI would have felt more personal. Wouldn't suggest using this location. This is the third moving truck we have rented in the past month, all from different locations but this one was the pits. NoPo and Milwaukie were very helpful and friendly with every interaction. The uhual cargo truck provided had a leaking gas tank. It was handed to me on empty, filled it up at a local gas station, and after driving 6 miles home the tank was completely empty. The roadside service did not show up. Currently stranded after waiting 6 hours without any resolution. Do NOT recommend. Go somewhere else. read more

Rent from U-Haul, just not *this* U-Haul. Pick-up and drop-off have changed to no-contact for COVID times; unfortunately, this location has interpreted "no-contact" to mean "no-service." I was barely regarded when I picked up my truck, and the same went for when I dropped it off; four dudes were standing outside chatting it up when I pulled up, nobody asked if I had everything, checked the car, or asked about fueling it up. So color me surprised when I got charged on extras I'd no idea I was responsible for. The manager sent a feedback form with the final receipt, which I filled out expressing my disappointment in the lack of guidance or communication. Not 30 minutes later, I got a call from the manager, telling me how the online check-in definitely informed me of everything his staff didn't, which simply wasn't the case (seriously, double-check the flow after you get the key; the site makes it seem like you're done with it once it's time to get the key, but you're supposed to follow more steps on it; shame the person who gave me the key didn't bother to say so). The manager basically chewed me out over the phone, then said he'd "refund a few bucks, for good faith." No refund came through. I tried sending an email asking about the refund, but no response. So he basically called me up to argue over my feedback. Great customer service. read more

I had business here twice in the last week: once to buy a hitch, once to return a trailer. On both occasions I had zero wait time. The employees were knowledgeable and efficient. The advice they gave me was correct. I checked in my trailer without issue and my invoice was exactly as my rental agreement stated. NEVER GO HERE!!! I would give this place negative stars if it were possible. I went to this location to get both my lights and hitch installed (which are covered with Uhaul's lifetime insurance) and the VERY NEXT DAY I discovered that the lights were installed incorrectly when I went to pickup a trailer and the trailer and lights were incompatible. When I let this location know, not only did they ADMIT that they installed them incorrectly, they told me that they didn't have time to fix them and that I would need to PAY to have them fixed on another day. This was absolutely not an option because I had to move! They told me the only other option I had was to drive with my hazards on all the way to California....WHAT?!?! Even more repulsive, when I let Uhaul customer service know that this location has admitted fault, they refused to refund me the money I paid for the installation. Uhaul (the one man show at that store runs laps around this place with three employees), this shop was mostly useless except for the part where I paid for my moving supplies. Asking for help to locate box sizes and parts I needed for said boxes seemed to be strenuous, the employee sitting on his duff told me where to find them. Nope, not my job, dude. Then no help with loading my supplies, not a cart, not a person, nothing, so I had manage the awkward boxes out the door and down stairs. On the day/time selected, waited in a long line to speak with customer service, only to find that they had not ordered the hitch, and never contacted me to tell me they didn't have it and couldn't get it. This is a hitch available for next-day delivery on Amazon, btw, and elsewhere. Then I had to wait in another long line to get a refund to my credit card. Worst customer service ever! I wish I could give minus five stars. We called the number for this location to rent a pickup to move a piece of furniture that wouldn't fit in our hatchback. We were sent to a random location on SE 82nd and no one was there. The office was open and empty! A guy finally showed up and didn't even acknowledge us, so we left. We called them back and were advised to got to a place at 82nd and Stark that does not exist! Horrible! We will NEVER use U-Haul again, total waste of time and energy. On 9/1/19 I rented a U-Haul truck. When we rented this truck from U-Haul, they send you out to the truck to inspect it and approve that it is not damaged and clean. I went to look at the truck and opened the back to to look in, signed off and then went on our way. Once we arrived at our home to start filling the truck, and now that we had stepped in to the truck for the first time, we noticed a sticky spot on the floor, a metal rod wedged into the side of the truck (left from the previous renter), and that the seal for the utility dolly was broken. It was clear at that time that the truck had been rushed through and not inspected after the previous renters returned it. Otherwise the seal would not have been broken on the dolly. I promptly called U-Haul to report what we found, it had been less than 20 minutes from the time we drove off with it, and they assured us over the phone that we would not be charged for the mess or the broken seal. I asked about the metal rods I found in the truck and was told to leave them there so they could return them to the rightful owner. After we were finished using the truck, we swept out the dirt from our move and returned it. We did not feel it was our responsibility to mop up the sticky mess that was left for us by the previous renters. U-Haul did not charge us for the broken seal but tacked on a $25 cleaning fee for the sticky mess and for leaving items behind ( the metal rods they instructed me to leave in the truck). We asked them to refund the fee since we had followed their instruction and were originally assured we would not be charged. The manager we emailed refused and did not believe us. I informed him that there was a phone call made just minutes after we rented the truck that may have been recorded, and that the customer service representative on the phone told me that we would not be charged for the dolly or a cleaning fee. Originally I was set to another location for my rentals, the prior renters bumped my reservation and I was moved to this location. Unfortunately this location induced additional fee's/taxes which I did not agree upon. The young man in store let me know that if I checked my rentals back in by myself at the next location, these taxes / fees would be returned to me. That was a lie. I am now out an extra $400+ because of something that was Uhauls fault. I was also lied to. Very frustrating and the lack of customer service was awful. Would likely never rent from Uhaul again. These guys are great. I've rented trailers here probably 5 or 6 times for various reasons. Smooth as can be, maybe 15 minutes at most if there are other people ahead of you, provided you already booked online. Have your ball hitch on (most accept 1 7/8" or 2" ball), pull up your truck, one of the friendly dudes throws on the trailer, checks your lights, and you're out! Returning is even quicker. Literally 30 seconds today. Pulled up, guy was already outside, took off the trailer and I was out. Also, best price in town on propane tank fills or new propane tanks (with free gauge built-in!). read more

When I asked whether anyone checked for the part in the week since I made the appointment, staff was disimissive "other customers have to wait over a month." Mistakes happen, excess frustration could have been avoided had staff not been dismissive, owned up to the mistake & tried to make it right. read more

Second time renting here yesterday. It becomes night so I go to lock the lock and realize they never gave me a key. The guy dropped one off at my house when he closed which is cool. But then I realized the reason the key was off the ring in the first place was because the lock had been cut. It's after hours so I call and tell the operator my situation and she tells me there's nothing they can do. Hooks me up with a number that tells me I have to log in to myuhaul.com for roadside assistance. I submit one and they tell me there's nothing they can do except put my own lock on which I don't have and can't leave because I don't have my car or a car seat to "GO BUY MY OWN LOCK?!?!" So here I am watching my truck all night long having paid for shit customer service and equally shit work ethic. Own up to your damn mistake and take care of your paying customers that are the reason you have a job in the first place. If they say I should've checked the equipment first I'm gonna shove this broken lock up their ass and try to fit my size 12 boot up there as well. read more

I bought this hitch receiver from u-haul telephone hotline and spoke to the sales directly and was told I will receive this item within 2 days since I also paid to expedite the shipment. I was told the item is in Eugene Oregon which is about 2-3 hour drive to Portland. So I assumed that extra cost of expedite shipping was well worth it. However, it didn't go as I planned, it actually showed up 4 days later and it was actually coming from California. I had to called both the Portland and Eugene stores myself to find out that there was a delay and no one was going to confirm it with me. I finally called the hotline and found it out myself. I needed the item badly since I promised to get it done within 2 days not 4 days, so I felt really bad for my customer. I accidentally returned a trailer to wrong location 20 blocks from this UHAUL. Not only did they not communicate with each other , Sandy Blvd location charged 2 days late fee and 75. recovery fee. Even though it was returned on time. Previously any UHaul rented in the same city can be returned to any other local Uhaul. Went to talk with person working who was beyond rude and insolent. I have rented from them several times before. NEVER AGAIN. Refused any compensation and justified 150.00 extra charges on a 19.95 rental. I booked a truck from this location almost two weeks in advance, and when I show up they called me to tell me they overbooked. I literally did not get any notice until I stepped foot on the lot. After that they routed me to a location 10 miles away. That means an additional 20 miles that I might have to pay extra as the representative said they could not guarantee any discount. Also had I not had a vehicle or flexibility I would have been completely out of luck with my move. This was a very poor experience, and would tell others to be wary of doing business here. read more

Staff was friendly, helpful and prompt. After calling around, we found u-haul had the best prices for trailer hitch installation. We made an appointment and dropped our car off in the morning. The guy was super nice and explained the whole thing and answered our questions. Our car was finished in about an hour and when we came back the same guy, walked us through what was done and gave a printout of everything and it's price. We had our dog with us and the staff were really cool about her coming inside while we settled our bill. read more
