I usually had a overall good experience traveling through SFO until 2 days ago. I will not name names until a much later date. I fear if I disclose the name, I may get retaliation in the next few months when I return for my commencement at USC. So I travelled back to America on Friday. My first contact was a female CBP officer. While she was generally alright, she sent me to secondary clearance. I explained to her the reason why I had been staying outside of the country (this time 130 days) was because of my mom. My mom had late Parkinson's and her days are numbered. As my mother's daughter who had not spent much time with her for 20+ years, only to travel to pay her a visit once a year, I felt a duty to now spend as much time as I can. My greatest regret in life was not able to see my dad in his last few days of life. Still, I tried my best to maintain my permanent card status. I do not stay out of the country for more than 180 days. It was something a previous CBP officer confirmed, no staying outside the country for more than 180 days. I always come back and not violate that time frame. No, she had to send me to hell. Why? I met the most aggressive and condescending CMP officer. I was shaken inside, his questioning left me with PTSD. He reminded me of my abusive ex, putting me down and making false accusation. He wanted me to pay $695. I did not understand why. I was thinking why USCIS and now CBP kept trying to ask me for money?? I applied for a I131 re-entry permit in 2023 but was denied in 2024 because they claimed I was not in the country when I applied for the permit. I was in the country but already left when USCIS received the application in the mail. The US Embassy in Singapore was the one who advised me to quickly applied online when I was physically in America. That was one of the requirement to apply for a re-entry permit. That permit would let me stay out for a period of 2 years without having to travel back. So to appeal for the denial would cost me $100 more than if I reapply again. I reapplied again when I was back in March 2025, and the average processing time is 15 months. So that was the story. No, he did not care. He even went on to accuse me of not staying in the country full time since 2013. I was shocked, I like no that could not be. I only moved to Singapore in 2023. It has always been a temporary move. He raised his voice even more, said that was what in my record. I was dumbfounded. I knew better not to argue, just like those times with my ex. I would stay silent for the wrath that followed would be too much to bear. He went into an office behind after asking me to go sit down. Then I heard his conversation with his supervisor. At one point, I heard his supervisor asked the CBP office what was my reason. He responded "she said her mother is sick." The supervisor loudly said "Everyone said that!" By this time I was disgusted, cos don't these people have mothers? The officer also told his supervisor I had been only living in this country for a month since 2013. Soon the CBP officer came out and called me over. Again, he reprimanded me and said I had been in violation, and I had not been living in this country much since 2013. He asked again when my mom got sick, I said around 2021-2022. Finally he said something referring to my travel records. He said "Okay I read backwards." So yes, I did not as what he claimed earlier, i.e. only stayed in this country for a month every year since 2013. Of course I would not expect any CBP office to apologize even when they made a mistake. Seeing that I was not eager to pay the $695 (I still do not know what that was for), he said okay he would give "this" (referring to this stack of printed guidelines) for free. He went on and said from now on I would have to pay $695 every time I come back to America. I did not understand why I was being treated like a criminal. I paid my tax and have always been a law abiding person everywhere I go. I am always kind and respectful to people. Is it cos I am an easy target? He asked me how much money I had in my bank account. More importantly, he claimed I should just "get a maid" to tend to my mom and return back here if I want to keep my green card. It was such an irony coming from a representative fr the government given America's history of slavery and domestic servitude. It was highly insensitive. This officer was aggressive, mean & making false accusations from the beginning till the end. That to me was just abusive. I tried to stay strong, got into a Lyft, checked into the hotel and started crying. PS. Please do not treat people with such condescending and aggressive manner. I read wat he so kindly gave me, no it did not mentioned anywhere that I had to live in America for 180days. Instead it noted to maintain status not to stay outside for over 180 days. Also, someone holding a Singapore passport does not mean they have a gold mine somewhere. read more

All these negative reviews about going through customs at SFO, and I've had some real bad experiences in other countries that I won't mention, but my experiences here have always been good!! Yes, the line is long sometimes, but it is constantly moving at a pretty good pace to me! Yes, they do ask questions sometimes, no big deal, they're just doing their job!! It was a fascinating, though deeply annoying, attempt to manufacture an error where none existed, just so he could flex his minimal statutory muscles. Despite presenting valid US passports (and having been born here, for the record), his line of questioning suggested he was running a high-stakes, political litmus test designed to root out even the most native-born traveler who might dare challenge his 'My Country, My Rules' worldview. When asked "Are you carrying alcohol or tobacco?", "No" is a complete sentence and is sufficient. read more

An officer pulled my son, who was getting out of the Army on his way home after his tour in Korea, for questioning. During his questioning he started belittling my son calling him Private and saying he was a disgrace to the military. He started telling his story of being a drill sergeant and continued his rampage against my son until he started crying. He left the room and Officer White came in and consoled my son. I commend officer White and condemn his supervisor who belittled my son and disrespecting him for his service. Officer White deserves his supervisor's job and his supervisor should at least be reprimanded and better yet, find another profession. read more

My wife and I recently visited the border area in Lukeville Arizona, in the hopes of seeing the proverbial Border Wall up close. As a disabled US Army Gulf war veteran and proud minority American, I am proud to be living during the resurgence of America. We were met by a Border Patrol officer and told him we were visiting Lukesville to just view the border wall. My wife and I were pleased how professional this young border agent was and how well he treated us. We both told him that we appreciated his service and what he was doing on the border keeping all of America safe- my wife and I took a couple photos together, then we departed the border knowing these Border Patrol officers risk their lives daily and how America should appreciate their work- Thank you US Customs and Border Protection agents for a job well done. This yelp review is regarding a San Francisco agent , Alanis was on her badge. I wish negative stars are applicable. Customs agents are professional everywhere else, EXCEPT the USA. Especially, the San Francisco International airport. They are the worst. I was stopped 3 times within a few feet away from one agent to the next. However, ALANIS mid-late twenties Hispanic agent woman was hostile , aggressive, unprofessional, and extremely rude. In hopes that supervisors read these review, she should be evaluated and observed to prevent other US citizens from being harassed. My elderly mother started crying as she felt helpless. My husband and son, tried to stand near me for support through and she became even louder making a scene. She is not fit for this position with an aggressive and unprofessional nature to say the least. The interrogation was unethical as I had already gone through customs and was nearing the exit. I had Global entry for about 10 years, and never had encountered such a rude experience as I did today at SFO airport CBP. My inbound international flight was over one hour late due to weather. In a rush to catch my connecting flight, I passed Global Entry kiosk too quickly, the CBP agent (an African American woman) ordered me to retake the photo at the kiosk which I did. since I had waited in line once before and I was late for my connection, I asked people waiting in line to skip the line so that I could catch my connection flight. when she saw that she came out of her booth to order me to go through the long line again and threatened to revoke my Global entry. I hope her supervisor could see this review and stop her abusing her power at CBP. read more

I've passed through US Immigration (first desk) and Customs (second set of officers after baggage claim) at SFO several times over the years. Aside from a sometimes long-ish wait (both at Immigration and baggage claim) and the now $8 cost for a luggage cart (that's free in other international locations), I've had very little to complain about about. That's probably helped by the fact that Gayle and I (aka America's Couple) don't fit the profile that would result in further questioning. Plus, our interactions with US Customs and Immigration Staff (to date) have been professional. There is one funny situation with Gayle at Seattle (SEA-TAC), where one of those cute beagles busted her for an apple in her possession that was given to us in Iceland as part of a Christmas-related Yule Lad gift at our hotel. The sticker on the apple identified it as a Washington State apple, which meant that our fruit had come home. Fast forward a couple years during Gayle's Global Entry interview, where this situation had now appeared on her permanent record. Other than that, Gayle and I pay attention to the rules and are rather relaxed when we reach the first Immigration desk. And now with our Global Entry cards, returning to the USA has been a breeze, and as recent as a few days ago as we returned from Johannesburg via London Healthrow. read more

I hope yelp can offer negative scores. 1 star is way too high for someone. For San Francisco airport U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the staffs are rude and stupid. Last month I came back from Asia to US, first landed in SF. A stupid CBP guy locked my passport in a box and ask me to go through a manually bag check. I have to catch the next connecting flight and only have 1.5 hours. But that stupid guy did not listen to me. It didn't even explain why. At last they open my bag and wasted me half hour. Also they kept several items and promised to mail to my home address. Up to now I have not received yet. It's just gift I bought for kids. How disgusting are they !!! Longest wait times of any airport I've been to, ever. Even third world countries have faster customs, often just breeze right through. SFO is understaffed. This last time, only ONE counter open, mid day during peak season and the wait time was over an hour, and that's because I know SFO is slow and I sped passed a lot of people to get in line. Worst experience ever. I went to the UK for work and did some shopping. In UK the goods are no longer duty free so i had paided taxes there. Came back to the states they made me pay another 9% taxes on the goods. I can't believe it at all. I thought us customs is to protect us from terrorist and to stop people from bringing illegal things into the country. Nope! they are looking for people like me to pay for more taxes that ive paid. It's crazy we pay for federal/state/sales taxes but never enough. I basically paid about 25% sales taxes on my items. This is some ridiculous BS! Its true i bought luxury goods to save in the Uk cause the exchange rate is good right now. Hoping to save a little money. Coming back here i got slapped with a $1000 bill that I have to pay for or wont they seize all my items. I had no control or choice but to pay. You can't argue you can't dispute it. We flew through the UK and Greece no problem. Upon arriving back in the US, we have Global Entry so we had our pictures taken and were through security in about 5 minutes. It was almost the quickest we've ever exited the airport. Until someone said, "sir?" I kept walking. My husband turned as a border patrol officer made a bee line for him. I kept walking. I just flew 14 hours and the last thing I wanted to do was get harassed by some former cop who was trying to pull random people from the stream of people heading for the exit. As I was waiting near the exit, another officer asked me brusquely what I was waiting for. When I said I was waiting for my husband , he asked, "why aren't you with him?" You really can't win. So I exited into the terminal and waited 20 minutes while my husband had to empty both his carry ons and get asked why he's traveling alone and why does he need so many pairs of sunglasses. It's one thing to check and verify that we are who we say we are but the inane questions and the condescending attitudes are ridiculous. Also, they caught an older gay man entering legally into his home country carrying two carry ons. Freedom preserved! read more

Plain useless and waste of our tax money. Just flew around the world to Madagascar, Vietnam, Cambodia, Singapore, and Japan... so quite a few immigrations border from quite poor nations too... well they the USA immigration officers of SFO top them all. Some papers got miss filed years ago which means that I get to go to secondary check regardless of being a green card holder. 50min wait. Where typically one agent is tasked to handle quite a number of passports. No phones allowed despite my girlfriend being at the bagage claim waiting for 50min, and the agents themselves being on Instagram and or watching football games live. Them watching football games instead of doing their job is not to be complained about. Why? Because they wear the badge and get paid for it with our money. Something they are VERY proud about despite their questionable education level. What happened America? Efficiency and work ethic? Because from where I am standing clowns are running the show, with our cash flow. Bring back justice and order in this chaos. He kept asking me why I have no job, how is that ANY of his business? It was a horrifying conversation, at one point he basically said I was lying. He said " that is what you say but is it true?" U.S. Customs and Border Protection - Public Services & Government Near Me - San Francisco, California

I just read messages about CBP that are posted a while back. I have had a similar experience, about not having so many officers processing and then did some research. What I have found out is that SFO is having a hard time keeping Officers and hiring Officers due to the very high cost of living in the Bay Area. The hiring process alone is for Federal Police Officers which takes a lot of people out of the process. Then those who get hired to the Bay Area are from the Mid-West or from areas where the cost of living is nothing compared to what we have. I also researched an Officers beginning salary and discovered that the first year of a CBP Officer in the Bay Area is only about 47K to 58K. I couldn't survive in the Bay Area with this salary, can you? Some other messages I have read on here look like they can't even understand what this department is, "Customs and Border Protection" not "Customs and Border Patrol" or "TSA". Additionally, people exit a plane and stand in a line to have their passports checked, which is also called going through Immigration not going through "Customs". I fly out of the country once every year and others on here look like they fly every month or so but still don't even know the difference. I always grew up respecting police officers no matter what. So, when I fly back and some officers are getting crap from other passengers that call themselves US citizens, I can only be ashamed. As a citizen I can understand that I have to pay duty when returning home after reading cbp.gov. Also, I was always told that the Federal Inspection area to include the baggage claim area is just that, a "Federal Inspection area". So, why would I use my phone or hang out there after I have all my bags. If I'm traveling with my family, I just stay with them otherwise I'm out of there ASAP! It's an inspection area not Disneyland so, if I'm told to leave or not even told rudely to leave why would I get all upset. The bottom line is I'm somewhere I shouldn't be or doing something I shouldn't be doing. I was told or yelled at not physically beaten up by these officers. Sorry but I'm not going to be a wimp and complain over being yelled at, even if I'm in the right. A comment I have after reading some things on here is that a green card holder should be actually living in the US and not spending 6 months here and 6 months in another country. Those people who are doing that are just taking up a green card for those who actually want to live in the US and I think that is completely messed up! If one isn't ready to move to the US then give up their green card status, don't just hold onto it just because one wants to use it as an easy visa. Oh, BTW for those who keep saying that they can do better or complaining that we pay the officers salary, my best advice is that you might talk a big game but if you know so much about their job and how to do it then why don't you do their job and teach them instead of complaining about it. I myself could never do their job. Nor will I pretend I know what these officers go through on a daily basis. I've seen a ton of complaints on here. I challenge people to put their compliments on here. I spoke to one officer when I returned one time. I was told that due to their number of "personal" questions they catch visitors coming into our country to work illegally or do try to live here illegally every day. I will agree that not all of the officers are great. I did have a bad experience with one officer and felt that he was extremally rude during his questioning before letting me go through immigration. I later asked for his supervisor before I exited the area and was told how to make an official complaint. One last thing that I also have to say. Marijuana, while it is legal in California and in some other states doesn't mean that it's legal to bring across an international border. I heard someone got caught carrying marijuana and even had a prescription for it. Then had a review on here a while back to complain that they got caught and had to pay a fine and also complained about the officers. Really, one brings drugs then gets caught with it and still is stupid enough to say that the officers are wrong for giving you a fine. Sure....ok. I hope this sheds some light on issues. read more

I was on the U.S. Citizen's Line. Customs officer at the counter were unprofessional, rude, and so embarrassing. Two officers were bantering at each other saying words in a different language which I understood as defecate; inappropriate communication in front of a line full of returning citizens (or for that matter, visitors). One officer, started speaking to me in a different language (Filipino), and I informed him that I do not speak that language; he said I don't either, I am Chinese. I overheard one officer expressing profanity when he had trouble obtaining fingerprints from one of the travelers. I am not sure the level of education these customs officer and airport employees have but they are the face of our nation as travelers walk in to our country. If I could give ZERO stars I would - I've had global entry for over 9 years now, never had a problem in NYC and actually love how smooth it makes my multiple international flights a year go. Recently arrived into the US via Miami, FL and was the first global entry to hand in my slip, thinking I could just walk out like in NYC - the man proceeds to ask me every question in the book about my trip, my partner, where he was (pointing to the line,) all with my global entry slip in hand (also, note I've come off of 31 hours of traveling from East Africa back to the US) He proceeds to snap at me, bark at me, and reports me for "refusing to answer questions" - I was answering all of them, even with more detail about how exhausted and out of sorts I am. He is harassing me at this point and send me for "further inspection" on another floor. I get there, confused, and 3 "customs" people ask me MORE questions - I said, I don't know what the slip of report paper is and one says "a piece of paper." (condescending and patronizing, nice USA.) They are also confused as to why I'm reported as refusing to answer questions seeing that I'm answering all of their nonsensical questions as well - everything from where I work, to what I do, to why my partner went somewhere else for business meetings - to having to explain where I was in South Africa since they don't know any of the cities in that country...and asked if the city I was visiting was in Arkansas. (the level of idiots they hire is beyond me.) By this point I'm crying from exhaustion (turns out I also had food poising but didn't know this yet) as the woman goes thru my entire luggage to the point of opening up period products (mental cups) and fingering around in them. I felt totally harassed and dehumanized, if being sick and traveling 31 hours back to the USA wasn't bad enough. Worst part - I'm actually scared they have flagged my global entry now and all because some ass hole collecting global entry slips in Miami had a power trip and wanted to harass me. Also - to clarify - I'm a white American woman from the American south with the most white name you can imagine. It's sad to think I wish my boyfriend had been there to possibly assist or protect me from this treatment. USA - you suck but this is so horribly gross and disappointing. read more

When many planes arrive at the same time, its a mad house . In Tokyo, they have seats for elderly people who have to wait in line and extra help to make the lines go faster. My last entry at SFO from Japan went as follows: The immigration officer looked at my landing card which showed $10 in purchases. She asked if I bought any souvenirs and I told her just candy at the airport before boarding. I told her that all my souvenirs that I bought were at the airport Costco, I had enough junk and didn't want any more. We exchanged a few more pleasantries about travel and that was the end of it. Generally the line moved fast but I don't like all that automation that goes on. I was surprised at the machines to take your photo and scan your passport. Unfortunately Japan has started the same thing and the immigration people (many teen aged types) are getting nasty. Malaysia has been the best entry immigration point that I ever cleared. Sad to say there is no public access immigration office at the airport to talk to some body about certain matters. read more

SFO is a good airport. Probably one of the few best in the country. Good food, nice services, easy access by car and transit, aesthetically pleasing. So why not 5 stars? CUSTOMS AND IMMIGRATION. You guys suck. You're terrible. Okay, here's the deal. When you travel overseas, even at the smallest, crappiest airport, EVERY line for passport control is open. They may have 2, 4, or 50, but they are ALL open. This ensures that you can get through customs relatively quickly. Then you fly back and get to talk to our good friends at the TSA. SFO has 46 lines. I forget the split between Visitors and US Nationals, but there are 46 possible lines. Every time I fly back, I always wonder: "where is everyone? why are so many lines unmanned?" This past trip we flew back on Memorial Day (a busy return travel day) and there were 8 customs agents. EIGHT!?!?!?! 4 for US Nationals, 3 at automated customs and 1 for visitors... This is disgraceful. How are we portraying ourselves to the rest of the world? Let's go through the excuses that I heard from the ushers guiding people to the correct line: 1. It's a national holiday: If you work retail, what days are you not supposed get off? Busy sales days... How many Best Buy employees get Black Friday off? The same should apply for travel days... if your job is to check people into the country, shouldn't you be working on busy travel days? 1a. We flew out of Istanbul on May 19 (a national holiday in Turkey) They had AT LEAST one person at each Passport Control Line. Why? BECAUSE IT'S A BUSY DAY! 2. We're short-staffed: there were 8 Officers checking peoples' passports and 7 "ushers," (I use that term very loosely) guiding people in the right direction.. here's an idea. Fire 4 of the ushers and hire 4 more agents? there are 3 possible lines" Visitors, US Nationals and US Nationals Automated (there's also Diplomats, but I figure if you're a diplomat, you'd know where to go. I can't imagine that you need more than 3 ushers. Or fire 10 of the people standing around at the security checkpoints and hire 10 more agents... just a thought. 3. We're not a big airport, so we don't have a big staff: Shut up, just shut up. You're the second busiest airport on the west coast, 4th busiest west of the Mississippi and 7th busiest in the country (one behind that quaint little airport named after John F Kennedy in that tiny little town called New York City). You are the gateway to the financial capital of the West, portal to Silicon Valley, and the avenue through which tourists come to see the Golden Gate, Alcatraz and all of our other attractions. You are a big airport. Act like it In other words, SFO, you are pretty cool to fly in and out of if you're on a domestic flight. But your international arrival set up BLOWS. It is a disgrace to our nation, and should be overhauled. read more

I enjoyed reading some of the other reviews here! Especially for a Scandinavian arriving after a 17H journey hitting the SFO immigration lines, this is not how we do it even being outside EU.. There we read the signs telling welcome to the US, over and over while queuing for over 3 hours! My impression is that the machines that should get people more efficiently/faster through have to be improved to get the easy cases/visas efficiently across. It seemed to me that most got a cross over the processed piece of paper due to bad quality photos? The few that succeeded using the machines, that is getting a print without a cross went fast through (like my spouse). Fast since only a few percent of the hundreds/thousands of people packed increasingly tighter in the hall, had to line for additional hours to see the few guys working hard getting these masses through. read more

I have a 2 year re-entry permit and he said that it's doesn't matter because I'm a green card holder and not allowed to live overseas for more than 6 months. 6/15/18 Welcome back??? My wife and and returned from France yesterday to SFO where we joined the long, winding line waiting to clear customs. After two hours in line, worn out like so many others waiting, our turn to approach the glass kiosk came up. Here is what transpired. My wife, who is a Permanent Resident green card holder, approached first only to be accosted by the CBP officer with a barking question, "Why aren't you a US citizen? My wife who is native of Japan, was taken aback by the rude question, replied, "Why do you ask?" The female officer, who appears to be of Latina or Philippina descent, aggressively repeated the question and demanded an answer, threatening to send my wife and me to the back of the line. My wife replied that because her parents are still living, she prefers to retain her Japanese citizenship and that it is her personal business. The officer took offense, continued to bark out ordrers to answer questions, like, "what year did you receive your green card?"even though she has seen the card while demanded that her authority be respected and that she, the office, was responsible for protecting us and the country against terrorists. Thinking to myself that we are dealing with a borderline psychotic, I nudged my wife to just answer her questions. I did say to the officer that since we arrived at her station, she was unfriendly, aggressive and unnecessarily rude. She kept insisting that her authority was beyond question. Welcome back, indeed! As another Yelp writer wrote in 2015, "is this just a rant page, or is anything going to be done" about the mistreatment of citizens and visitors who have to endure the abuse of "Customs & Protections" police? Traveled to Aruba on vacation, but I'll never go back because of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection system the have at the airport. Had to stand in line for a full 3 hours! Not exaggerating. This was excruciating! They only used 3 or 4 agents to handle hundreds of visitors. Delay had nothing to do with COVID testing checks because no one from US ever checked our COVID test results, on departure or landing. I think some of us will have stress fractures in our ankles, knees, feet, and back after that. Was told by employees that this is normal for U.S. Never again! I feel bad for Aruba for this absolutely terrible last impression to their wonderful island. read more

I recently took a hunting rifle to Africa and had to go through the inspection process when returning home through Atlanta. It went quickly and easily, despite many hunters returning from SA on the flight. Folks were friendly and helpful, and then escorted us out of the building and right to ground transportation. It helped us get home earlier than we thought. Will definitly use ATL as my port of entry back into the US. The passport folks were equally nice and very fast. read more

Worst ever and I travel all the time. Completely made me miss my connection- they couldn't care less- and I had a Three hour layover!!! I'm still not thru. Only half the stations are open and they've lumped all us and non us together. read more

So for the last few years i've been able to travel under an assumed identity based on my current passport. You see this was my second passport and when the folks at passport renewal decided to switch my surname and given name i've been lucky that everybody understands its a clerical error and not some malicious act. From time to time the airline checkin folks have caught it but let it go so i get the feeling this is quite common. So far i'm 2-0 in getting back into the country thru san francisco this last time the border agent did ask me about notifying the proper resources and i admitted that i had not really bothered. So i'm hoping that when i submit my passport for renewal next time the folks will just reverse the names and everything will be back to normal. read more

Horrible experience for me and my family. Treated and talked to like a prisoner. We are US citizens not grunts or soldiers. I can't say enough bad things about the treatment was given. I can say that I hate the agent I came across. I'm sure not all are foul like him but this gives an impression that all are un welcoming. read more

Super long line. Unfriendly staff. They are the most unpleasant part of my each travel.

We just went through US customs at SFO with equipment and a carnet. There were a couple of mistakes regarding the paperwork on our end. US customs could've easily made our life very difficult, but instead explained to us where our errors were and how to avoid them in the future. We were basically given a warning. The officers we dealt with, and I won't name them for security reasons, we're both reasonable and professional. read more
