This was my first time visiting Common on the Green at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised. I initially visited as part of an assignment, but after this experience, I will definitely be back. The dining hall serves students and campus facilities and is a convenient, well-organized option for lunch on campus. Before visiting, I reviewed the lunch menu online, which made the experience even smoother because I knew exactly what to expect. I chose The Den and ordered a chipotle bacon cheeseburger all the way with no bun, LOL and French fries, and it did not disappoint. The burger was hot, flavorful, and well-prepared, and the fries were crispy and fresh a classic meal done right that never fails. The atmosphere was clean and efficient, and everything moved quickly, which is great when you're on a lunch break or between classes. I've enjoyed many meals here throughout my time at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. My freshman year I would just eat here for basic survival, but as the years went on I began to appreciate the food and effort the staff put out. They even started doing theme nights as well. My favorite is their pho nights because it reminds me of home! I also appreciate the typical options that are there when I do not want to eat the food provided that day. For example, their salad bar and sub station always hits with vast options. Their desert bar is unmatched with variety from cookies to ice cream. Their drink selection is very vast as well. I ate at The Commons for the first time in 3 years and while the majority of the food selection stayed the same they have added some new features like new soda fountains and an ice cream bar. They have different vegetarian, gluten free, and vegan options and a well-stocked salad bar that I always used to from. The dining area was constantly being cleaned when I was there and the staff was always friends. I think the main problem I had with eating at the commons was the price for lunch was a bit more expensive than I expected. Since I don't live on campus I'm not required to have a meal plan with meal swipes which is used to eat at The Commons for free. Instead I had to use my Dragon Cash and the total was about $14 and while it is an open buffet, I would rather go somewhere else on campus for what I would say is better food at a cheaper price. I've been going to the Commons for 3 years now, and I'm sad to say that my opinion has stagnated, if not gotten worse, over the years. Today I went for a quick dinner. I had my usual, a slice of pizza and a salad from the salad bar. The quality of food at the Commons can very drastically throughout the week. On this particular day, the pizza was quite dry with very little sauce or cheese. The salad was good, and there were a variety of toppings and dressings to choose from. At the time I went, it wasn't very busy, though I have been to the Commons during the middle of lunch on the weekdays. During then, it's not uncommon for them to run out of clean silverware. A staple on the UAB campus, The Commons on the Green provides meals for students every day of the week. Unfortunately, the food at the Commons does not provide quality, reliable food, and usually leaves me disappointed. As someone who has been eating at the Commons for many years, my friends and I often joke about how the Commons will disappoint us tonight, a feeling that resonates across much of the student body. In addition to this, eating at the Commons with dietary restrictions often leaves much to be desired, for example, tonight, when I ate at the only bluntly stated vegetarian option was a tofu with vegetables that had been wilted to the point of being inedible. As a result, I often find myself eating exclusively at the salad bar, like I did tonight. On a positive note, the Commons does a great job at consistently stocking its salad bar and keeping it relatively clean. For items that can become unsanitary quickly, the Commons employees are vigilant in keeping the salad bar clean for students. The staff is all extremely kind, especially Ms. Robin, who works at the front checking students into The Commons. She remembers my name and always greets every student with a smile. The staff, in general, adds a lot of value to the Commons and makes the Commons an enjoyable experience. Specifically, tonight, they were hosting a karaoke night, which I personally found to be a bit overstimulating. It was difficult to have conversations with my friends and talk at a reasonable volume. While I do not frequent the Commons often, I hope that this was a one-time event, as I do enjoy going for dinner occasionally, but I don't really enjoy listening to karaoke while eating my salad bar. Overall, in terms of a campus dining hall, I think that there are better options on campus, but they do provide students with the nutritious ingredients they need to be functional and successful in classes, especially freshmen who do not have access to a kitchen. The pho on Wednesdays from simple servings is my favorite day of the week. Because the dining hall is buffet style, I can always go up to get seconds! Fortunately, the Commons posts their weekly schedule of what's being served for breakfast, lunch, and dinner ahead of time on the Everyday app. This allows students to "know before they go" whenever they're choosing to dine at the commons. However, the Commons isn't only for UAB students. For those not using a UAB dining plan, an all-you-can-eat ticket at the commons ranges from $10-13, depending on the meal time. The inside is always kept clean, and staff are walking around keeping everything wiped-down and tidy. Apart from food waste, the Commons is one of UAB's most eco-friendly dining options. Instead of single-use materials, the Commons uses reusable plates, utensils, and glassware. From my freshman year until now, the Commons remains one of my favorite dining options on campus. My only complaint is that, occasionally, some past dishes seem oily/greasy. This isn't always an issue, but I have noticed it on more than one occasion. read more

UAB, The commons has some good food option, including the vegetarian options. which I love because I am vegetarian. They have amazing fries. The cream soda and cheese pizza is my favorite, I always get it. I don't like the ice cream, it doesn't taste good to me, which is weird because I love ice cream. I miss the brownies they had in there, Lowkey was my favorite desert. It isn't my number one but was my favorite go to when I wanted some chocolate. The person at the front desk was nice to me my first time going. I didn't even know what to try when I first went, she recommended me to try the Alfredo pasta, which was okay. it tasted like the glass sauce from the grocery store. Overall, UAB the common is great place to grab something quick to eat and go, or to meet up with friends, or even study. The UAB Commons is usually my spot on Fridays... fried fish and dirty rice always is a win. By the time I had arrived at UAB, COVID-19 restrictions had been basically lifted and it was packed on Fridays. It must have been a significant challenge to "socially distance" in the Commons during COVID because unless some of the tables were removed, there wouldn't have been much distancing between students/employees. As far as the staff behind the food stations, they were and still are back far enough, and equipped with masks, they were at a safe enough distance from anyone who posed a potential threat. However, I think the students and employees alike were mindful of the severity of COVID-19. Although lunch on Fridays used to be labeled "$5 Fridays," the recent rate increase to $12 isn't bad for what is offered. Since the price hike, its almost seems like COVID restrictions returned, and I understand why many employees have chosen to dine elsewhere for lunch. Nonetheless, the facility is always clean, and there is plenty of room to stretch your legs and enjoy your lunch... unless there are visiting camps of high school students, MASSIVE TAKEOVER, LOL! I've never had to wait for silverware, plates, or cups in a cafeteria of that size, unlike your chain restaurant buffets. I wondered why recyclable utensils, plates, and cups haven't been a thing, but then again, that probably would impact the overall price point, so there goes that. What I do know is, the water temperature is HOT, so they're cooking hot food and scalding germs in the back. Shout out to the staff; they work really hard at keeping the food coming out fresh and presentable. The biggest upgrade to date is the new soda fountain machines. My only issue with them is they are "touch-screen," and in a post-COVID world, that may not be such a great idea; I mean, I hardly see anyone hitting the bathrooms to wash hands before dining. My only gripe is they don't offer bread pudding regularly... I need that to happen ASAP. But I was a salad bar monster today, so I was grazing like cattle and ate all I could. I have visited The Commons many times. This time around my friend used their guest pass on me since I am not an on-campus student, therefore I do not have a meal plan for the commons. The person who scans your one card when you walk in wasn't particularly welcoming, which is something I have experienced here in the past a lot. Once we got in, I went to the pizza, where a new tray of pepperoni had just been put out. There are different "stations" for food, such as, make your own sub, pizza bar, and healthy food. You just grab a plate and take what you want. I grabbed a couple slices and made myself a salad at the salad bar. The pizza was fresh, hot, and tasted pretty good. The salad was decent for a salad bar. The cleanliness of the commons is usually always kept fairly well. I always see employees cleaning at all times of the day, which makes me feel like the table I ate at was likely freshly disinfected. I am not sure if I would eat here again, as it has been years since I have visited again until now, and it's not something I would particularly want to revisit. read more

As someone who used to live on campus at UAB, I used to frequent the commons almost everyday. When I was on campus, my favorite days were fried chicken Thursdays and fried fish Fridays. I even had a close friend of mines visit on a Thursday and she still, to this day, talks about everything she ate in our cafe that day. From the chicken and sides, the soup, and the desserts, she tried and loved everything that she had. After a while, though, I found myself avoiding the fried chicken lines on Thursdays because it didn't hit the same. With that, I ventured out to try the rotisserie chicken with brussels sprouts and begin making my own salads, finding a tasty alternative to what I used to love. Food aside, the workers in the commons are usually sweet people and they play a big part in keeping the environment welcoming. Even when I found myself only making salads and eating pizza when I came in, I still loved the environment. Another plus for the commons to me was definitely the ice cream machine. Having access to a sweet treat after eating, especially soft serve ice cream, was a plus that I thoroughly enjoyed. My past experiences with The Commons at UAB haven't always been the best, mainly due to their lack of variety and slow restocking of food and silverware. This is the place I go to on campus for a quick meal, but not for a good one. This Sunday, though, they surprised me. The main entree they were serving was shrimp and grits, which is a rare menu item. I was served a hefty portion by a very kind staff member who made sure to give me a fair amount of shrimp and sausage when scooping. The grits had shrimp, sausage, and bacon bits and were at the perfect temperature. In my past experiences, the food at The Commons was not well seasoned at all, but my grits were full of flavor and required no extra seasoning! I had also observed that they were serving chicken nuggets, and they are always good, so I grabbed some, which I also enjoyed. I observed that all of the food was in stock, along with the ice in the drink machine and the condiments. Sometimes the online menu does not align with what is being served that day, but it did match on the day I went. One thing I do not enjoy about the ambiance is the loud music they play on a few large speakers. Other than that, the layout is well-lit and open, with many different seating options. I enjoyed the commons because it was very spacious. The environment was very friendly and the employees were very nice. They had a variety of food options for students to choose from. I loved the broccoli and garlic pizza that they provided. I also loved the salad bar with various dressings. I like that you are able to go back for more food because as a student we sometimes do not get to eat enough meals through out the day. As you get done eating you are able to just place your plates, silverware, and cups on an assembly that goes straight to the kitchen. I did not take much advantage of the commons when I was a freshman but I went for the first time in years and there were so many different changes I noticed. It was overall clean and there were several food options to pick from. They have a fresh salad bar, pasta, pizza, burgers and much more you can pick from. I ate at the Common on the Green for the first time today. At entry, you have to pay before you can get your food. The total price to eat is $12.65. I don't think that is a bad price for a buffet style cafeteria. I didn't see any precautions for Covid-19. The employees working seemed friendly they all had smiles on their faces. They offered many seating selections whether you were dining with a group or sitting alone. They also had a private dining area towards the back of the cafeteria. First of all, the atmosphere of the Commons was really pleasant and the lady that greeted me at the front was nice. There is always someone at the front to greet you because you pay at the front. The area where you pick up food is very open and spacious and as long as you miss the breakfast, lunch, or dinner rush you can take your time and eat. It wasn't too packed when trying to find a seat either. I would give it a five but the pasta could have been a little better. The food was good. They used spiced buffalo chicken for the Caesar wrap which is different than the last time I ate there but quite good. The pasta was dry and then you added sauce so it was ok but would have been better with some protein. If these aren't your preference they have many other options such as burgers or a salad bar. I have been going to the Commons since I was a freshman and I will be a senior this year. I was told by a friend that she loved going their as a freshman a few years ago, so I met up with her to see if this would be my new go-to for lunch. The pricing is what surprised me the most, especially since I felt like the options available for me--due to dietary restrictions--were few and far between and I ended up not getting a lot. Other than that, the areas were clean for the most part, which is important with the amount of foot traffic in the area and being in a "post"-COVID world. The commons on the greens is a place I haven't eaten at for about 2 years now since I've been a student. This is understandable since I commute to campus now but recently I decided to eat there 2 days with my sister. I would say that the pricing wasn't what I expected but of course inflation. Hamburgers and Pizza are standard every day, but they try to vary it up at the other booths so you can have variety. There are lots of seats - so finding a spot, even during the crowded lunch and dinner rush, usually isn't an option unless you come with a huge group. You can pay with credit card or with your blazer bucks, which most students have as part of their meal plan. The staff here are super friendly and try to make sure everything done is top notch. I finally had the chance to eat at The Commons on the Green on Monday. I chose Monday specifically, because I do not have a meal plan that gives me meal swipes, and I knew that The Commons does Mindful Mondays where students can get in for only $5. I went with a couple of my friends before class so we could dine during breakfast hours since that was our favorite time during our freshman year. The Commons is very spacious and boasts of UAB pride with the amount of green and Blazer spirit you can find inside. It is conveniently located almost in the middle of campus, so it's easily accessible from all sides and not too much of a walk. It was heavily packed when I went, and as a result it was difficult to find seating for myself and my friends. I went to their Entree area and got eggs, pancakes, bacon (not pictured because it was finished beforehand) and potatoes. I love breakfast in general and am not too picky, so I enjoyed it for the most part-- the eggs were a little bland and cold though. The people who served my for were also in good spirits and made me feel welcomed. Additionally, one of my friends who dined with me is vegetarian and found that The Commons accommodated her fairly well. I dined at the UAB Commons on the Green on a weekday during lunchtime. This was my first time visiting the establishment and overall I think it is a decent place for students to get an affordable meal on campus. There was a line, but it moved fast so there wasn't a long wait time. I do not have a meal plan and my total rung up to around $12 which is not bad considering I typically spend more at Panera Bread and Chick fil a. I enjoyed the music that was playing in the background. It was mainly top 40 pop hits. The food was buffet style so there were plenty of options to choose from including vegan, vegetarian, gluten and dairy free choices. Social distancing was definitely not practiced, but the cleaning crew did a fine job constantly cleaning each table after patrons left. The plates provided are reusable and thoroughly washed limiting the amount of disposal waste produced. As for my meal I selected the pepperoni pizza and a side salad. The pizza was lukewarm and slightly bland. I've had better frozen pizza and the salad was standard to that of any buffet. I would prefer a better salad mix. In the future maybe they can include a micro greens and spinach mix. I also wasn't enthused by the dressing options. Overall it was a decent visit. I went to UAB's Commons on the Green! I have been going here since freshman year and have always loved their wraps, burgers, salad, and chicken. And of their desserts (can't forget about dessert!) I love their brownies, cookies, and chocolate cake! I got a salad with ranch dressing, black olives, cheddar cheese, croutons, and the colored tortilla strips (I think that's what they're called). I also got a wrap with turkey, pepperoni, ranch, lettuce, tomato, and cheddar cheese. This is what I usually get when I go to the commons. And I always dine in, since take-out requires us paying extra for a to-go box. The workers there are always so nice and welcoming too. I believe all the plates and bowls are glass and the utensils are metal, so no plastic is used. And regarding COVID-19 restrictions, because there are not as many cases now, the Commons has removed their social distancing guidelines. I always like the ambience of the Commons because I usually run into people I know and there are so many places to sit. There's always an empty table somwhere. The seats outside are very nice too. I dined at the commons this evening as an off campus student I rarely dine at the commons but I made an exception today. During my dining experience the staff were very friendly when I first arrived. There was music playing but not too loud to be a distraction which was nice. I got fried chicken, macaroni and cheese and greens. I like the buffet style of the commons as it gives me the opportunity to try different things as I had rotisserie chicken as well. I was disappointed though that they ran out of ice cream. I would also suggest that they make an announcement that they close in 30 min because we were rushed out but no one informed us that it had got to closing time til they were actually closed. Overall it was an ok experience, I enjoyed my collard greens but the rest of my food was ok. read more

The commons at UAB is very mediocre, its hours are not inclusive to those who fast Ramadan I realized which is something that is concerning considering the muslim population at UAB. I went to the commons on Thursday and it was fried chicken day, my food was not bad. I got fried chicken, mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, and cornbread. The cornbread was dry and crumbly but was edible. My chicken was good, not dry and crispy on the outside but my friend's chicken was unedible, so it was quite inconsistent. The mac and cheese was dry and you could tell it had been sitting out there for a while. Overall the experience was not bad but only because I did not expect much either. read more

Regrettably, my experience with UAB Commons on the Green's Fried Chicken Thursday was shadowed by an underwhelming culinary experience. The chicken, though it looked good on the outside, was unfortunately undercooked within, compromising both safety and taste satisfaction. This flaw in execution displays importance adhering to cooking protocols in establishments which serve thousands. Despite the flavorful seasoning and accompanying sides, the subpar preparation of the chicken diminishes the overall dining experience. For this review, I am looking UAB The Commons on the Green, of course, at UAB. Overall, as far as school cafeterias go, the Commons is really ahead of the curve! The entrance fee is a little much to my liking, however, there is no limit to the food you eat or the time you stay within the cafeteria once you enter! The high entrance fees are put to good use as they have just installed all new, state of the art soda fountains, waffle makers, and even soft-serve ice cream. On top of this, there are a lot of different food options for students to choose from. My personal favorite, and what I ate for this meal, are their Cheeseburgers. I ate four of them and the rating of each is entirely dependent on how fresh they are. In other words, eat them when it is hot! Overall, the atmosphere is welcoming and the staff are nice as well! The seating area is also kept clean and is sanitized regularly. This place is definitely a solid food option for students and/or faculty at UAB so please give it a try! read more

I ate at the Uab commons, as I am a student but do not have a meal plan it was pretty expensive at $19. I had a cheeseburger, a couple fries, and a slice of pizza. It did not seem as if there were any pandemic related changes besides updated equipment. The food was good but I would only eat here again exclusively if I had a meal plan.. read more

Since moving off campus, I don't often eat at The Commons on the Green, UAB's university cafeteria. One of my on-campus friends invited me out for a quick lunch this week, and asked if I wanted to eat at the Commons. I agreed since I hadn't been in a while, and was pleasantly surprised to see that it was still pretty good. I had the chance to make my own waffle, which was fun. They had some toppings set beside the waffle iron, but I opted for a plain waffle. Since COVID restrictions have lightened as a whole across campus, it is the same for the Commons, though some employees continue to mask. They are all very friendly. However, with the 11$ cost, I would likely not go back soon unless I was staying in the dining area to study. read more
