    10K Sammie Pear and Brie
    Culinary S.

Intrigued by UB Social's catchy, double entendre name (The "UB" stands for "Unemployed Baker" - so clever), inviting small window frontage and enticing sandwich board advertising we've been meaning to pop by for lunch for a long while. Not long ago the return of summer weather afforded us the opportunity to pop by and order lunch to share in a nearby parkette. Here's the good part of the experience. The person at the window was super friendly and clearly enjoyed chatting about the various sandwiches on offer. We were particularly intrigued by the 10K Sandwich (named for the fact that it was awarded a $10,000 prize at a sandwich contest in NYC), and the description of the pear and brie filling convinced us that it was something we had to have. For our second sandwich we chose a turkey salad with cranberries croissant, a pretty standard go-to for us so we were curious to try this version. We also impulsively ordered up a savoury tart that was on display in the window (thinking this was our typical over-indulgence but what the heck) as well as a small bottled water to share. The 10K Sandwich was really delicious, with a very nice proportion of pear to a high quality brie and a tasty bread to keep it all together as we stuffed our faces. We're glad we ordered it for sure. And this is where we slide into the not-so-good aspect of the experience. The turkey salad croissant was OK, but certainly nothing we'd order again. There was far too much mayonnaise and what turkey was there was so finely chopped that it was hardly discernible as poultry. The cranberry sauce was unremarkable and because of the high proportion of mayo it didn't add that delicious tart-sweetness that makes the turkey/cranberry combination an über pairing. And both sandwiches were small - like, really small. Normally we're thoroughly satisfied with a sandwich each for lunch, but in this case we were looking forward to the savoury tart to fill the hunger gap. Unfortunately the tart was similarly small, and again just OK. And this brings us to our biggest challenge with our lunch. For what we ordered and the overall quality, we found the tab to be far too high. $40.00 (inclusive of HST and tip) for two small sandwiches, a single small savoury tart and a small bottle of water (all of which left us still hungry) was just too dear for our taste, especially with so many other enticing options nearby. That being said, they're always busy so they clearly have their fans and we're definitely going to drop back to try their baked goods.

UB Social - Toronto. I felt overwhelmed by a lady that was there, not sure it it was the owner, but she was not in the counter. Since I went in I felt approached by her and even when I had already paid she said that they didn't accept credit. The coffee wasn't bad.

I came here out of the blue cause i didn't feel like making the same food and treated myself with take out. Let's say this place I did not know existed and it was pretty neat, it is straight out of Québécois home of the smoke meat and poutine. They caught my attention because of all the fancy decor and patio dining seat. They have a fancy swing with their advertised special which was the Roast Beef sandwich with bacon and cheese with side of fries/salad and a soft drink for 12.99, deal right? Lemme tell you, I was greeted with open arms by the 3 staff working and it was very home feeling. The roast beef was sliced quite thinly and was very tender to bite and chew. The curly fries was particularly interesting as it was kind of too well done for how I like to enjoy my fries traditionally, but maybe I'll learn to like it. Overall, the food was quite heavy that I'm going to just share my portion. I'll definitely come back and give some other items on the menu a go. ps: they provide you with a decent size pickle that is nice and salty.

I didnt even know if I called the right number. When we got that cleared up I asked for a pound of smoked meat. They proceeded to ask sandwich, platter... all I wanted was meat. Wheh we got that cleared up, we picked up the food and it tasted very good. It was shaved quite a bit more than I expected but that's it a huge issue. It also felt a bit on the expensive side. And maybe even overpriced per lb compared to what I might get in a sandwich. Parking is a bit hard here as the lot was quite busy. They gotta fix some customer service issues but otherwise the food was good.

The portions were extremely generous, especially when considering the price and the cost of food. WELL WORTH IT! I chose the veal sandwich (as my photo shows) with hot peppers. It was the perfect amount of spice and a hearty helping of meat as well. The wait staff were friendly and helpful and gave just the right amount of attention. We requested a bit of time after the meal, which gave me just enough time to take in the atmosphere and aesthetic of this place. To me, it feels like a fusion of an old-world Italian bistro meets the new world, with old-school style tablecloths and the traditional sides in traditional glass serving containers. The interior design leans a bit more new world with nice panelled ceilings and even a lamp at the table that we could adjust by ourselves....

A panini is a great filler (the hot Italian is a great way to go). The meatball sandwich combines the best of all worlds - delicious meatballs, and delicious breads. And, the pizzas? Incredible value. The Costa Nostra is a great way to get a lot of unique flavours that work really well. There is also a wall of wine, which I'm sure is very exciting for a number of people. That's a world I can't speak to, but it was impressive to look at. The only slight downside is that the restaurant can be a little bit loud. But that's to be expected.

Out group tried the Biscuits and gravy, shrimp Benny and brisket Benny as well as fried green tomato, kids apple johnny cakes and grilled cheese. The portions are generous. The chicken with the biscuits and gravy were 2 pieces of brined dark meat chicken served on a biscuit and collards smothered in pork gravy. Chicken was very juicy and super crunchy, collard needed some acidity, biscuit was light but a little overdone and gravy was not as fat a decadent than in the south, lighter but still tasty, wish they poured it a little more generously. The fried green tomato was outstanding as the accompany silly aioli situation was great. Kids apple jonnycakes were a hit and loved the hot chocolate with mini marshmallows for the kiddos. Gtilled cheese was a hit - got the pull and the bread was well toasted. The home fries were a bit of a let down. Although very cool and layered, they seemed very greasy, maybe oil or flattop wasn't hot enough? Benny's were both good, shrimp cake was well cooked and crisp and brisket was flavourful and moist. Hey have no waiting area and take no reservations. Use their call ahead service and enjoy

What a pleasant surprise... was very impressed with this place! Food (4.75/5) - they have a good mix of sandwiches, meats, jerk chicken and beef patties. - Fully Loaded Peameal On a Bun - what an outstanding breakfast sandwich - probably the best one I have ever had! Hearty portions of: - double peameal bacon patties - fried egg - melted cheddar - maple aioli - kale - tomato (not for me) All on a soft pain-au-lait bun. What a first bite! Juicy peameal, maple aioli flavour, perfectly fried medium soft egg were the highlights. Beef Patty - fresh not frozen and homemade. Had the mild one and probably could have done spicy instead... it is VERY mild. Nice mix of beef, oxtail and other ingredients in a nicely baked outer crust - not too dry or thick. Service (4.75/5) - can tell this is a family/private owned business... take pride in their stuff, friendly and polite. It isn't going to be ready in 5 minutes... building from scratch takes some time but well worth it! Atmosphere (4.25/5) - it's got this retro NYC deli feel to it with the artifacts, signs and hardware. Primarily for take-out so if you want to stay there are 3 bar stools and 2 benches with side tables. Overall (4.75/5) - very impressed and 100% coming back to try out many of the other items on the menu. Someone eating beside me had the Reuben and it looked great too. Only issue is they are only open for short stints during the day and weekends is only time i can get there... breakfast opening is 1030am and stops at 12pm, so get there early to grab those breakfast sandwiches if that's your goal!
