One of those random walk bys that turned out pretty well. The fellow at the counter was super friendly. The indoor area was in a bit of a harried state but I didn't ask and wasn't sure why. I ordered the the Moroccan chicken salad sandwich of their croissant. Very flavourful and the croissant I was hoping would blow me absolutely away from its description. It was tasty but did not blow my mind. I will say the sandwich I had I would order a second time. I was satisfied and it did come with one of their house made chocolate chip cookies. I appreciated this! I also ordered their Virgin mojito slushie. Had to! I loved this despite the fact this gave me brain freeze. My fault of course ! The croissants are the lightest and crunchiest I've had in Toronto. Breakfast sandwich is amazing and I hope they bring back the egg salad. We buy Panettone there at Christmas. Coffee is good too. Picking up some speciality treats for stockings as they have small but curated store, including noice reusable bags that look like the $30 Baggu but are only eight. Bonus. They stayed open to serve our neighbourhood during the lockdown so we got our takeaway good coffee. read more

Intrigued by UB Social's catchy, double entendre name (The "UB" stands for "Unemployed Baker" - so clever), inviting small window frontage and enticing sandwich board advertising we've been meaning to pop by for lunch for a long while. Not long ago the return of summer weather afforded us the opportunity to pop by and order lunch to share in a nearby parkette. Here's the good part of the experience. The person at the window was super friendly and clearly enjoyed chatting about the various sandwiches on offer. We were particularly intrigued by the 10K Sandwich (named for the fact that it was awarded a $10,000 prize at a sandwich contest in NYC), and the description of the pear and brie filling convinced us that it was something we had to have. For our second sandwich we chose a turkey salad with cranberries croissant, a pretty standard go-to for us so we were curious to try this version. We also impulsively ordered up a savoury tart that was on display in the window (thinking this was our typical over-indulgence but what the heck) as well as a small bottled water to share. The 10K Sandwich was really delicious, with a very nice proportion of pear to a high quality brie and a tasty bread to keep it all together as we stuffed our faces. We're glad we ordered it for sure. And this is where we slide into the not-so-good aspect of the experience. The turkey salad croissant was OK, but certainly nothing we'd order again. There was far too much mayonnaise and what turkey was there was so finely chopped that it was hardly discernible as poultry. The cranberry sauce was unremarkable and because of the high proportion of mayo it didn't add that delicious tart-sweetness that makes the turkey/cranberry combination an über pairing. And both sandwiches were small - like, really small. Normally we're thoroughly satisfied with a sandwich each for lunch, but in this case we were looking forward to the savoury tart to fill the hunger gap. Unfortunately the tart was similarly small, and again just OK. And this brings us to our biggest challenge with our lunch. For what we ordered and the overall quality, we found the tab to be far too high. $40.00 (inclusive of HST and tip) for two small sandwiches, a single small savoury tart and a small bottle of water (all of which left us still hungry) was just too dear for our taste, especially with so many other enticing options nearby. That being said, they're always busy so they clearly have their fans and we're definitely going to drop back to try their baked goods. read more

Nice LITTLE cafe in the Junction that I've walked by on a number of occasions. I emphasize the little becuse UB social Cafe is small, but mighty. They offer the usual suspects of coffee and tea options as well as freshly baked goodies (done in house) and yes even some super cute gifting option from their general store shelves (located opposite the front cash). I had a simple Americano and it checked the box in taste, caffeine content and temperature. The cafe only holds about 10 people max, so it's not the sort of place you would want to hang out in to do work in all day (plus the acccess to power was a bit limited). Their coffee is just what I needed today to while the time away. Glad I also impulsively picked up their Brie and Pear in a croissant. One bite would give you the flakey rich croissant, creamy Brie and perfectly balanced in sweet and tartness with the pear. Pity I didn't take a pic as they have figured out how to make it portable without squishing the croissant. That was really much appreciated as I have to eat it covid-style (as in eat your takeout wherever you find a flat surface....lol)...thanks for giving me a good start to my day! Stopped in for a quick lunch with a friend. Clean and nicely appointed new cafe in The Junction. Reached for my Aeroplan Gold card a few times subconsciously. Where else besides an airport can you be overcharged for bland food ? And $3 plus tax and tip for a small cup of coffee ? I wish the owner well, but I probably won't be back. Strange mix of self service and scrambly table service. read more

I've stopped twice at this place, once for an iced coffee and once for lunch. The coffee was great and the owner was so friendly that I decided to come back with my Mom for lunch when I was in the area another day. We had the detox tea, the tuna melt and the lentil salad. It was all fantastic! We cannot wait to go back and try the Argentinian empanadas. read more

Ordered an iced lemonade. The price stated, both on the board and on the menu by the check-out, $2.65. Then was charged $5.04 for said lemonade. Wait a second. "Oh that was last years price". Really? It's currently June 2019. Last year was six months ago. Oh, but it was honoured though. That was absolutely the worst business etiquette I've encountered. Gouging the customer. And the lemonade wasn't even freshly squeezed. It was overly sweetened from a concentrate. They lied twice. Don't patronise this establishment. Better places to go in the Junction. read more

Had such a great latte and breakfast empanada here this morning. All the condiments and everything are made in-house, and it all tasted great. The space is well designed, bright, and clean, and the owners are really friendly. I have my daughter's ballet class there every Saturday, so I'll be sure to go! Highly recommend. read more

This shop smelled amazing (amazing food aroma wafting onto the sidewalk despite the wet paint) so we just had to stop in. Had the "award winning 10k" sandwich - Brie, pear, mustard, etc making a great combo of flavours balancing savoury and sweet. The bread was toasted perfectly and arugula salad on the side was a good accompaniment. Highly recommend! Didn't get to try the empanadas but they also sounded delicious read more

I was in Toronto for a business trip and stumbled upon this gem for breakfast. I was so happy I did - it lifted my mood for the entire day! The service was fast and so friendly, and the food was delicious and simultaneously simple yet complex. The portions are small, but I still was able to compose a satisfying breakfast for CA $12 (had the breakfast empanada, fig and walnut biscotti and an Americano) and the experience was well worth it! I felt so comfortable and welcome, the music set the perfect mood, and I loved how much of a community feel it had (for example, there were photos displayed that were taken by children at a local festival - I really enjoyed looking through them!). Overall this place was lovely and if I'm ever back in Toronto, I'd make a point to return! read more

A rare gem of a place. I am writing this having just devoured the most delicious biscotti I can remember ever tasting. Mary and Anthony make everything from scratch -- the sauces, the empanadas, the tarts, cakes, baked treats .. everything. it is clearly a labour of love. Completely overpriced. Food was tasty but not lived up to the prices. Also very small portions.

I slept in today, so I had to grab some quick bite on the go. The UB Social has a nice, bright ambience and is very welcoming. But $7.50 for a regular coffee to go and a small (however delicious and still hot) croissant came as a steep surprise. I guess a great spot for folks with some disposable income.
