This is not just a review for Uber Charleston but for all of Uber; however I will start with Charleston. DO NOT think you will get a ride after an event with Uber for the price as seen on the app. The drivers congregate near the venue and leave you stranded unless you agree to a price almost 3x the amount the app shows. We were recently there and the app was showing in the low $30 range but the drivers were asking for $90-$100 to be venmo'd or cash app'd to them. Huge scam and when you try to complain to Uber they have no Customer Service line even if you call the safety help number. We actually got two drivers showing they were on their way then we were bumped for a better price and charged anyway. One driver "Yessica" in a VW Atlas picked up riders instead of us for a better fare leaving us in a parking lot at 11:30 in Mt Pleasant. BOYCOTT UBER. read more

I've used Uber in other cities while traveling for Years. With my work HQ being in San Fran, it's always come in handy. I always wondered if Charleston would ever pick up this magical service as it was much needed. Fast forward to years later and TaDa! Uber is here. Now in the meantime, I know they've had their bouts with PR and legality around the country/world, but I'm a firm believer that it's a necessary and useful service that should be embraced here in Charleston. Living in Mount Pleasant, the options are pretty sparse. I've had Uber come in handy many times locally since they've been here. I've taken them home from the bar and then back to my car in the morning after too much of grandpa's cough medicine and even put friends into Uber's under my own account to make sure they get home safely. I can then track the driver on my phone and contact them if I need to making sure that a friend gets home safely. You can't do that with any taxi service. I have yet to have a bad experience other than a driver cancelling on me and I prefer it more than any taxi service. I always feel safe and you can even get a photo of your driver, license plate number, make and model of the car, etc... I don't see how people say taxis are safer. Hopefully SC does the right thing in allowing them to stay and operate efficiently as they have been. I don't really see a downside for the consumers. read more

BEWARE. I booked an Uber yesterday morning to take me from Huntington Beach to LAX. The app showed that the cost would be between 45-55 dollars. I got charged 253 DOLLARS. There was an apparent surcharge fee. What kind of surcharge fee is there at 4:45 in the morning on a Tuesday???? The most I ever paid for an Uber from Huntington to la was 150 and that was during a holiday. They responded that no vehicles were available and cancel, and put in another request...this is 5:00 p.m. We again requested a vehicle to accommodate us, and we got an Infinity whereby 3 of us sat in the back, and the 2 others sat in the front in each other's lap!. No seat belts, but two adults driving along. The bill came in today and they charged us for the cancellation! Fortunately, one of the passengers chose to return to Mt. Gotta say that I've yet to have a bad experience with Uber in Charleston! I've used them plenty of times between my school and the airport (only about a 15 minute drive), and the rates have always been reasonable with friendly drivers! My roommate, friends, and I have used them on nights going downtown and back- these rides have all been enjoyable with friendly drivers and clean cars! The only problem we've run into is the demand at night time, so the prices are more, but when splitting the cost it's not bad. I'll continue to use Uber over Lyft in the city! read more

Excellent drivers, clean vehicles, good experiences each time. Never have any significantly bad issues. Prices are fair and I find the ratings system is awesome since it goes both ways: drivers AND passengers can be rated. Sometimes a lack of availability but that's mostly in rural areas or peak times. Uber is something that I have used in many west coast cities, including Las Vegas, Phoenix and San Francisco. In cities where Uber has been around for awhile, like Sf, the Uber drivers are great. In cities like Charleston, where Uber is not very popular, the Uber drivers are pretty poor. I have had only one driver know where to go, which is pathetic. We literally live off of Ravenel Bridge on the 17.. it takes two right turns to get back on the bridge, and once there it is fairly easy to navigate downtown. The Uber drivers here seem incapable of using their GPS on their phones. The fares go up to 3x as much almost every night, since there aren't many drivers. Is Uber convenient? Yes. I honestly love what companies like Uber are doing to disrupt the taxi service but at what cost? Think isn't meant to be a diatribe against either service. I'm an Uber newbie. As a visitor to Charleston, it was apparent that I would quickly go broke using traditional cabs to get around. Upon the advice of a hotel desk clerk, I downloaded the Uber app. I've been using them all week during my stay here, and can't say enough positive things about this service. The four drivers that I've had have been wonderful! On time, courteous, and best of all, not as expensive as traditional cabs. Tipping is optional, not required. Definitely I plan to continue using Uber instead of taxi services, even when I return to NY. Uber has a convert in me! read more

I am unable to pick up passengers due the vehicle inspection not being allowed. One Star, only because there is no Zero Star. Got scammed and ripped off. The first time I have ever used Uber was to ride about 1.5 Miles in Charleston, SC. Car was small and pretty cramped, but I was accomadated and offered the front seat, which worked out OK. Cost was about $6.00 plus a $2.00 Tip. Reasonable, and better than most Cab Companies in my experience. The return Trip (my second use of Uber), however was not reasonable. The Driver, Mohamed, very neatly scammed us out of better than $20,00. Our destination was the Charleston Market. Underway, Mohamed asked us which end of the Market we wanted. He did not tell us that our answer was different from the GPS map location we gave when requesting the ride, This apparantly breaks the contract for the initial price they provide for the trip and allows them to charge a much higher rate for whatever (extended) route the driver chooses to take. You do not find out about this until the driver is long gone. Needless to say, we will think long and hard about ever using Uber again. There are other competitors available, now that we know the lay of the land. Uber is interested in maintaining customer confidence in their service. Now, we know what the really mean by that concern. Between 2 rides on Saturday afternoon and late Saturday night, our total fare was 95 dollars. That's a tad bit high, however it is safer to spend money on a ride if you are drinking. I live in cane bay in Summerville sc in a development that is about 2 years old. I travel frequently and need rides to and from Charleston airport quite frequently. There seems to be an appalling lack of available service in my area, especially in the early morning. The very few times thAt my requests have been answered, every single driver has gotten lost and has to call me to get accurate directions because the UBER GPS app is woefully out of date! Then my driver is very very late and we have to race to the airport so I don't miss my flight. There have been very close calls when there is bad traffic near the Airport - which is a common occurrence in the Charleston sc area! BE AWARE! I was charged $12 to go from one side of the parking lot to the other. I couldn't carry my purchase so needed a lift. The route they used to quote the price was wrong. It took me out of the lot, to the highway, making a u turn, coming back to the same parking lot and then the correct route. In the car, we just drove across the lot. I use Uber for business. My college son and his girlfriend went out for New Years downtown. He set up Uber prior to going out. This morning we awoke to a $250 charge for the 15 mile trip home last evening. Neither was drinking but didn't want to ride home with others who had been. I called Uber today and was told the algorithm called for 8.9 times normal rate. Uber also stated they charge more for safety purposes and supply and demand. The driver was a young female and this was her first night. Nice job with the safety factor Uber. She also told my son the night had been dead with only 2 other rides all night.
