Honestly, this place was not good. I would say it's Thai food for beginners. The salad rolls were just average, grocery store like salad rolls. They desperately needed fresh herbs. The pad Thai was way way way to sweet. Pad kee Mao was just okay. Red curry was horrible, very weird flavor. The Tom Kai soup was really heavy in beef broth. And Thai ice tea was to watered down. I would compare this place to "Thai American food." Will not be back. read more

I love this place! It's a cozy, casual spot to get delicious Thai comfort food. Their pad thai is amazing, and their Tom kah soup is perfect for a rainy day (or any day)! Also, they have REALLY GOOD drinks. They have a cocktail list with about 7 drinks and all the ones I've tried so far are awesome. With this place being 4 stars I thought that it was going to be as good as it gets for restaurant Thai food in Eugene. Because I don't know why but; most every Thai restaurant I've gone to here has been too bourgeois. Thai food is about warm comfort; that should give you the experience that you're in Thailand itself. This places atmosphere was below-sub-par, uninviting, dingy and cold. The set up was odd; you think you're going to have someone come to the table to service you, as it turns out you have to wait in-line at the register to get an order put in. Someone had brought their dogs inside as they were ordering; which was off-putting to me. I'm some what allergic to animals. Also don't think people should be bring in pets to a place where people are trying to eat-- having pet hair fying around the place. I left shortly after having arrived. I rarely do that, I usually give places the benefit of the doubt-- but nah; not here. read more

The food was good, but portions were too small for the price. We ordered 11 things for 7 people, and with delivery it was almost $200. Curry came in pint containers--were used to quarts from other places. Jungle noodles covered the bottom of the box, barely. Prices may seem ok for a couple of people, but you can get twice as much from other places at a couple of dollars more per dish. We're moving on. read more

I have been eating here since the previous owners owned it. The foods always been delicious. I will say when I think of authentic Thai food their flavors don't match my expectations. That being said, their flavors still fall into the Thai category for me & are delicious. I usually get tofu, but all my ingredients taste fresh. My favor go to is the pad Thai special. The price seems to increase about a dollar every year. The $7 plate is now an $11 plate. I'll still pay the price, but I'll be eating here less. The new owners are nice. This place has the most amazing home cooked Thai food! We have eaten there twice. I had the Herb stir fry with beef and then the Cashew stir fry with beef. My husband had Pad Thai both times. I like to call this a great "comfort-Thai" restaurant. You order at the counter, seat yourself, and bus your own table. This restaurant cannot be compared to a full service restaurant. My daughter goes to college in Oregon and we visit this restaurant frequently. It's great. Unfortunately, the portions are small. My mom ordered the veggie stirfry and it was half of a little white container. She said it tasted really good but, mostly it was carrots and there was only like two pieces of broccoli. For the price, there should have been a larger portion. Also, we ordered two pad Thai with different spice levels and the cups of peanut sauce were not labeled. This place is a delight. Like other yelpers have stated, it's smiling service and a quality product. $10 got me a giant serving and two ice teas, one of which I paid for and the other I received out of pity. A little foreshadowing there. Unless your used to eating your food with a Scoville rating of, oh, let's say a million, you shouldn't request your food "Thai Spicy" when asked how hot you like it. Let's rehearse: Pretty Thai Woman: How hot do you like it? Customer 1: I don't like hot things. Please make it bland. Whatever you do, please don't make it "Thai Spicy" like that guy on Yelp talked about. He sounded like he was miserable. EFF! First the hiccups came. Then the sweat on my brow. Then the tears rolling down my face. My whole body felt seemingly 100 degrees warmer than on my first bite. I still ate half of my dish, which had eggplant, basil, broccoli, chicken and onion served over rice, but I felt like with every bite I was descending deeper into hell. About halfway through I had to return to to the window for a second glass of iced tea, the owner laughed and said she thought I knew how hot it was and offered the tea free. I managed to mumble something to the effect of " Next time I know less spicy than "Thai Spicy".." Knowledge reigns supreme. Please don't do your stomach lining the disservice I just did mine. I actually stopped at Albertson's on the way home and bought a pint of milk and chugged it in the parking lot. Nothing ever felt so good. Tomorrow I'll be pooping a fireball. read more

Made my first trip over to Ubon Thai yesterday. As an aside, this was also my first restaurant trip to be selected solely by yelpers. Y'all know what you're talking about. Ubon is a fabulous addition to the Eugene food cart scene. However, the set up they have is much more than open air. It appears as though the "cart" itself is just an extension of their property. There is both indoor and outdoor seating--so don't let the turn in the weather keep you away. We elected to sit outdoors, and between the layout, fountains, and the plantings, you nearly forget that you're sitting just feet away from Hwy 99. The owners have done a very nice job of creating ambiance in a place that, frankly, isn't known for it. The fam and I had a lot of fun perusing the old Nat Geo mags that were available on the tables, too. Nice touch! Now, the food. We weren't too adventurous this trip. Mom just wanted some soba noodles (menu item: pad me), and both Hubs and I felt like the pad Thai (menu item: Special pad Thai) was our only option this first visit. Food was beautifully prepared, presented, and seasoned. We picked the spicy peanut sauce to adorn our SPT, and I added the condiment chilis [fabulous, btw--choose these over Cock sauce (Siracha for the uneducated) EVERY time] to that. In case you're not too in to spice, both Dad and Hubs thought that spicy peanut sauce alone was just enough heat. Mom loved the pad me. Thought the noodles and veg were cooked perfectly. The whole table loved the veggies over all, and the mushrooms that were a part of the special pad thai were phenomenal. I really wish that non-factory farmed food was just a part of our US culture, because my only complaint about this place is that I'm fairly certain there's not a prime effort to source veggies/meat regionally or sustainably. I get it though--it's too hard to pull off, especially at this price point. Ah well, enough with the soapbox... Ubon Thai is fabulous, lives up to its reputation, and I've not eaten at another Thai place in town that can top it. Make sure to give it a try. read more

First of all the Owner's Bill and Pla are amazingly nice people. Their story of how they met is fabulous. Now to talk about the food. I have eaten Thai all over at some 5 star restaurants and at some dives. Ubon Thai is HANDS DOWN the best Thai I've ever had. My family and I eat there at least once a week. Here are my personal favorites and a description of each: Go To Meal: Eugene Pad Thai. Noodles are done perfectly every time, she is generous on the veggies and they are always the right consistency, never over cooked. The peanut sauce is amazing and when you "lime it up" it's like a flavor bomb explodes in your mouth! Keep away from my husband meal (otherwise he'll eat it all): Mussamen Curry. Oh! I just love this sauce. It's a mild yellow curry with veggies and rice. I prefer chicken with this dish. I love that she doesn't mix the sauce with the rice, it allows you to pick your level of flavor in each bite. A must try! My Pregnancy Craving Dish: Fried Rice. This is the right way to do fried rice. No MSG in this bad boy. I usually have her add pork to this and extra green onions (hey they baby wants onions!) this has been a savior for my pregnancy cravings! You can't get fried rice like this anywhere else. There are many more dishes that I have to try but I can save I have never once been disappointed. This place is just absolutely amazing! The guys was really nice and offered us a spot to wait inside because it was cold out. He even brought our take away food to us at the table! I got a pinapple pad thai with tofu and it was one of the best I ever had! You also get a side of peanut sauce which I highly appreciate. I would have given it 5 stars for my first time trying a new place, but I asked for 1.5 spice level which is a tad spicy. Like next to none I was expecting, but it was medium spicy. Also, I don't like that you HAVE to pick a side sauce when you order. It should be optional despite the fact that most of them don't cost a thing. I'm sure it costs the restaurant to buy and make the sauces so that seems counterproductive. My 2 cents. read more

When I lived in Eugene, I had the pleasure of trying most of the Thai places in the city. I can confidently say that Ubon Thai is the very best, by a long shot. Out of all the Thai places I have eaten at in my short but exciting life, they rank somewhere in the top three. We are talking Thai food that is so good, it is impossible to chose a favorite, and this place makes that list. It is located in a terrible part of town, you are going to have to get over it. This place is like a food cart attached to a mobile home. The inside of the home is clean and comfortable. Easy listening music is always playing and unique art is covering most of the walls. If you search around for a while you can find National Geographic magazines from the 1970's. I always enjoy the old school pics in them. Their menu has all the Thai basics that you would expect. They usually have a few specials on the board. If you are an adventurous person, go for the special. I had a few bites of one and it was like a flavor explosion in my mouth. I can say their curry is amazing, so is the Tom Kha soup and the fresh rolls. I basically get the red curry every singe time but I manage to steal bites of other peoples food; all of which has been fabulous. I no longer live in Eugene but every time I am in the area I have to stop by Ubon Thai. Even if I have to wait around for them to open, or drag a friend, who really doesn't feel like Thai food, I always find a way to get my fix. read more

This place is amazing! I was never a huge fan of Thai until my boyfriend brought me here and I instantly had a new favorite place. The prices are reasonable, the atmosphere is cool and quirky, and the food is superb! The couple that runs this place are extremely hard working and I appreciate all the deliciousness they bring. One time my boyfriend and a group of friends ordered a feast and the owner gave them all free drinks which was pretty cool! So, when you can, give them a tip because they're very deserving of it. Only downside is that the hours can be a toss up. If it's getting a little late we call first to see how much longer they'll be open. And I hear they'll be closing for a month or two (?) for a trip to Thailand. BUT I will hold none of that against them :) read more

Having tried nearly every Thai restaurant in the Eugene/Springfield area, I can say that this is the best Thai food in town. They know how to do spicy hot! It's the only place that I don't have to say 'extra spicy' to get a hot dish. Hell, Ubon's 'medium' is every other restaurant's 'extra hot'. Excellent! Although they just raised their prices slightly (but who isn't these days?), their menu is fantastic. I'm not a fan of pad thai, but they have at least five different pad thais on the menu. Excellent curries. The pad kee mao is rich and flavorful. It even came with a slice of lime! The prices are still good compared to the fancy thai restaurants, and the food has got some real soul. I was in town on business and wanted a quiet night in, so I looked on Yelp for a thai take out place. I chose this one based on it's reviews and close proximity to my hotel. I was highly disappointed. I love thai food, and based on the reviews, was excited to try this one. I ordered pineapple fried rice with chicken and a thai iced tea. The tea was good, but the fried rice was highly disappointing. The rice was sticky and soft, not like fried rice should be. It wasn't super flavorful and there was barely any chicken. It's the first time I've ever ordered that dish from any thai place and not loved it. Also, for take out food, I waited 25 minutes - on a weeknight and they weren't overly busy. That seemed excessive for me. At that point, I may as well have gotten sit-down food somewhere. The only plus I can say for this place and why I give it 2 stars is the cool ambiance of the "food cart" set up (I'm from Portland and love food carts) with the optional indoor or outdoor seating and the plants and set up which was nice. I don't see how this place has great reviews. It is not consistent for one and the man I feel can be condescending when it comes to the spices. Yes medium is very spicy and when he asks how spicy you want it, and you say medium he says oh it's very spicy then he makes unbearable on purpose. Then you ask for mild and it is nasty no flavor. I have not liked going here in a long time but today I agreed just because my son wanted to and again it was gross!!! Never again will I agree to this nasty place!!! There is so much better in town! Even the salad rolls looked like they were left over from yesterday!!! The only thing they have going for them is the peanut sauce which was decent!!! Neat place and excellent food. First glance from the street, most people might pass, much to their loss. Inside ambiance reminded us of the places we eat at in Laos & Thailand. We were really looking forward to trying this place, given the rating and rave reviews. The expected "atmosphere" wasn't a turn off - we are well aware of the authentic "hole in the wall" type restaurant, and aren't ones to judge a book by its cover. Sadly, the food wasn't all it was made out be. My husband got the chicken pad thai, and it was ok (I found it nauseatingly "fishy" but I know I'm sensitive to this; he rated it a 3.5/5). I got the chicken pineapple curry, and it was also ok. Not delicious, not horrible, just ok. On the positive side, the prices were reasonable, the serving sizes generous, and the service friendly. Given how far away this place is from where we live, we won't be visiting again anytime soon. That's not to say we will never be back, it just won't be the "it" spot I'd sincerely hoped it would be. read more

This colorful but easy to pass up food cart may be the best kept secret for thrifty Thai food lovers in Eugene. It is time to recognize that small cart based ops like this can kick out some tasty food at a great price. Most of their dishes are 5.50, which is a super bargain. However, I've always upped to their specials price of $6.50. A dishes like Eugene Pad Thai will fill you up! Sometime we just share a dish with an order of salad rolls. Recently I tried the Tom Kha and it hit the spot. This cart is owners operated and they are nice as can be. There is inside seating with nice music and quirky imported decor that is art for sale. There is outside seating with trickling water fountains and plants. Just enough to almost forget you are within a stones throw of one of Eugene's busiest streets. This place was such a surprise. The food service is out of a mobile home attached to a regular business building, with seating inside the building and outside in a patio area. Don't let the bizarre set up deter you, though--the food is delicious! On our first trip, my husband ordered the Pad Thai Eugene-style, and I ordered the Panang curry with a Thai iced tea. Not only were the portions exceedingly generous for the price, but the service was fast and friendly and it was some of the best Thai food I've had anywhere.
