With one notable exception, I have had a very good experience with this office. I was coming from a private practice dentist who was overtreating me and overcharging me (surprise surprise she sold the practice shortly after I left). I called UCLA, because I have other doctors there. I think their prices are fair - so far - and they don't really have incentive to overcharge or overtreat you like private practice dentists with a lot of overhead! That said, the first dentist I worked with - whom I really liked - moved. She was "conservative" in her recommendations, didn't overtreat, but was watchful and caring. I did not like the next dentist they paired me with at all...I found him rude and very condescending, and he pushed x-rays that I questioned the necessity of. I would have been open, but they acted as if I had missed appts or something - never! I had followed THEIR UCLA protocol to the "t!" He also neglected to even tell me that he only wanted to do bite wing x rays - I would have had no problem with that, esp. as it was my first time seeing him. (However, I think he wanted to do a full set and changed his mind when I questioned it.) I think he is following out of date guidelines - ok, but don't condescend to patients who are just asking knowledgeable questions! His attitude continued throughout the exam, so I complained immediately to the front desk: they were beyond helpful and nice. They set my next appt with another dentist, based on what I told them I liked about the first dentist. Time will tell, but overall, I think it's a good office if you advocate for yourself, and don't accept a rude dentist - there is a whole wall of dentists' cards to choose from! Not a big deal, but they really really need to update the waiting area! It's all dark brown and dreary - feels like you walked into the '70's! I do not recommend going here, unless you are okay paying upfront and than you have to be chasing your money from this clinic even when the insurance already pay them. I was happy with them before but been having issues with this new system they have. This has happened 2 times back to back in trying to get my reimbursement back. Wow! My dental hygienist, Ariel, really did an outstanding job cleaning my teeth. As a regular coffee drinker, my pearly whites are no longer pearly white. He was able to remove much of the staining to the extent that I could actually see the difference. This dental practice and I have a relationship that goes back decades and my teeth have always received exceptional care. In addition, all the staff members are very professional and courteous. I have been going to UCLA faculty practice since I was 12 years old and I am in my 40's now. I have been bringing my kids to the pediatric side since they were babies and now they are almost in their teens. I recently switched practices for my kids and found out that it is not normal for the kids to never have had an Xray. My 11 year old (nor my 7 and 9 year olds) never had a routine xray done at ucla dentistry. This is below a normal standard of care. We found out at the new practice that all my kids have cavities that have gone uncared for. It is horrible. My kids are traumatized as am I. I have been extremely diligent in flossing and brushing and taking my kids to every cleaning and checkup. This practice is not good - ucla is not professional in scheduling and the pediatric dentists are negligent. I'm horrified. Good luck trying to get your dental records - you can fill out forms, email, leave messages and they will all go unanswered. I left the adult practice a year and a half ago because there was so much turnover that I was seeing someone new each time. Making any appointment is near impossible and they will tell you they will call you to schedule, but they do not - even when it is a dental emergency. Horrific. read more

I made an appointment thru Carlos for a dental evaluation. I was told the price was $80 with no extras. When I was finished they billed me for $160. The manager came roaring out of her office and screaming at us in front of the whole office and demanded we pay $160. We paid $80 and returned the next day to pay the additional $80 to keep on good terms with them. The manager called 3 armed security people on 2 senior citizens again in front of the whole office. This was entirely uncalled for. They then sent us a nasty letter in the mail registered at a cost of $20 saying not to come back signed by the dentist (fake signature). Since when does the dentist get involved in billing? Is this indicative of the way UCLA operates? NEVER GO HERE! read more

Then they apply your Insurance and then they reimburse whatever covered to you,(go figure) after a long procedure used by an outdated UCLA system ! Dental furniture outdated and in bad conditions, does not pair with the Pros. Overpriced, not what they tell you in the info read ( compared to local Certified Periodontists from UCLA) lie. I was a patient at UCLA Faculty Dental Group for many years, but my last experience with them was an absolute nightmare. When I first went in, I was told I could wait to get a replacement on-lay for the one that had broken the day before. After weeks of waiting, a bacterial infection, many unanswered calls and emails, and incredible pain, a root canal was finally recommended five months later. Multiple dentists saw me during this time and assured me everything was fine, but that clearly wasn't the case. One dentist admitted that this never should have happened. I experienced many days of excruciating pain as a result and then spent thousands for a root canal because of their negligent care. Despite my level of pain, when they finally recommended a root canal they offered me an appointment 17 days later. Unconscionable. Because of my unbearable pain, I went to another dental facility the same day. In my 54 years, this has been by far the worst medical experience I have ever had. Such extreme unprofessionalism and negligent care from UCLA faculty professors who are dentists, and their uncaring office staff, is shameful. They were inconsiderate, incompetent, and of inferior quality. And when I complained after what they did to me, they completely ignored again. I have never written a bad review before nor filed a lawsuit, but to not protest such lack of duty of care would be a lack of care on my part, including reporting them to the California Dental Board. Been coming here around 15 years and the quality has taken a nosedive. Over the years I've had a lot of trouble with the main office: - They'd tell me something would be covered by insurance and then AFTER the procedure I'd get hit with the entire bill. -I showed up one morning to an empty office and waited for 20 minutes once only to have someone come out and say "Oh, sorry, we've cancelled all appointments for today." No phone call. - Most recently, my retiring doctor seriously messed up my crown, leaving me with a horrible toothache. They fixed it, told me there was no charge, and when I went back they said I owed for that procedure. They wouldn't let me talk to anyone, gave me an number a call, and no one picked up the few times I did. I just gave up. I have been customer with this dental place, loyal to this facility, thinking that would be treated equally and with respect. I was surprised by how she communicate with customer over the phone and placed me on hold without notifying me. I had dental hygiene appointment, she was the best hygienist, i was willing to wait for 8 months to get an appointment with her, i missed it, so regret that couldn't make it for the appointment due to my work schedule at the hospital, and I have never received a reminder, and she was yelling on the phone while i was at my break at work place you have to pay now,now! and you should be responsible for your appointment! after more than7 months, you would think I should be able to remember things without any remainder in a long gap. Where to start? I'm writing this review because I don't think a whole lot of people know about this place. About five years ago I was working at UCLA and was looking for a good dentist to go to. A co-worker told me about the UCLA Faculty Dental Group. And yes, I thought it was the dental school there, but it's the professional office run by the FACULTY of the school itself. So, what does this mean? You're going to get one of the best and honest care from some of the best doctors around. Mind you, they have many choices and you have to check around for the right fit. Personally, I had a range of services completed there- general dental, periodontal, orthodontic, and oral surgery work. Each of these are its own specialties and require doctors with the right knowledge and expertize. Not too many people will have to go through what I did, but I guess I was the lucky one... ca-ching!! Yes, lots of money out of my pocket, but it all was worth it. Great doctors who do a great job. This means that everything was explained to me clearly before each procedure and executed perfectly. I learned a great deal about how important it is to have not just good teeth, but great teeth. After this experience, I brush and floss religiously knowing the importance of it all. This keeps me out of their office and money in my pocket. My teeth are healthy, strait and and in their most correct positions. What more can I ask!! So, at the end of the day, I can tell you that I was getting one of the best dental care in the great Los Angeles area without a doubt! PS, parking is not free from what I remember, but you can check if they have changed that policy. If you don't mind a short walk, parking is free for 2 hours on Broxton Ave one block south of Weyburn Ave on the eastside. read more

This dental practice is dishonest about its billing practices and insurance. Twice they quoted amounts and then charged me 2x to 3x what they had quoted. They claimed this was due to insurance not covering it, but they had explicitly stated what insurance covered beforehand only to renege their statements. The payment folks are also incompetent. I left their practice in 2018 and they told me that I had payed everything and since then they chased me for $70 that they couldn't extort from the insurance company. Very dishonest. The actual service is acceptable. Once you are done waiting you will be seen by a competent dentist, albeit on a tight schedule. read more

The entire staff at UCLA Faculty Dental Group is very smart, thorough and informative. Everyone is so pleasant and kind. The practice truly cares about my dental health. I know this because they educate each time I come in for a cleaning or checkup. I always leave with more information, or a better way to manage my oral hygiene. UCLA was able to help relieve my jaw pain by prescribing me a nightguard. This has changed everything for me. I never have to wait more than 10-15 minutes for my appointment. They do not try to sell you on things you have not asked about. Other dentists have tried to sell me whitening packages and have tried to rip me off - not UCLA. Had a great experience here. Yes, they are incredibly busy and book up fast, but they let you know that right from the beginning so I had my expectations set. The things I love best are their efficiency with getting patients in and out, and how they are skilled and experienced and never try to up sell you. I left my previous dentist for this very reason. I never knew if I actually needed the work done or if they were just trying to get more money out of me. Went here for many years, and Dr Wong and Jennifer were great and excellent respectively. Both of them have since retired/left unfortunately. The hygenist Anna caused your gums to bleed very badly. Doctor Lopez made an error on my wife (bite wasn't good, then in fixing bite fixed the wrong tooth causing nerve pain) and I'd avoid using her and ignore the positive mentions she gets in Yelp. The 1-star review really comes down to the experience around billing/service. The fundamental problem is Faculty Dental clearly puts making sure it gets paid way over making sure you get billed the right amount. To do this, they will bill you for everything even when its covered and tell you it's not. The billed my wife $1,300+ insisting she didn't have coverage remaining, when she actually did. Because they had already been paid for the procedure, they didn't care much that insurance didn't reimburse for sedation for 15 minutes of the wisdom teeth extraction, because Faculty Dental had been paid. Delta Dental did cover it, but to get Faculty Dental to submit the proper code and then issue a refund took 4 months and multiple/multiple calls. Why did it take so long? It took so long because Rochelle (office admin head) said repeatedly she would review the explanation of benefits and call us back same day, and then didn't do it. Literally at least three times this happened. Only because we gave them the right code ourselves and made a thousand calls was it corrected. I also urge everyone if you go there to not trust the dentist or office that a procedure they say you need, is actually needed. They will give you complete x-rays when you already have them recently (and you get billed). They will call you in for consultation they say necessary and then you owe $370 for a 5 minute consultation because even your top of the line Delta Dental insurance coverage won't pay for it. If you looking for alternatives and happen to leave at all near Pasadena, Mary Chess-Abelson is quite good and you can be sure if she tells you a procedure is necessary, that it actually is. read more

My dental cleaning appointments with Daniela are always a breeze. Not only does she do a fantastic job with my teeth, but she also makes me feel at ease, remembers our past conversations, gives me a nice overview of what's going on in my mouth as well as things I can look out for, and gives me practical advice before my next appointment. The doctors are clearly top notch as well. Only main issues are that it's pretty much impossible to get an appointment anytime in the immediate 3 months (god forbid you have to reschedule), parking is expensive, and there are frequently issues with my insurance (though that is probably more of a problem with my insurance than it is with UCLA). The front desk ppl here are either incompetent or liars. I called to make an appointment, I didn't have any dentist in particular in mind and I told them that. Because of a previous experience I asked over the phone specifically if they were Delta Premier or Delta PPO (since Delta will pay for Premier providers but not as much), and they said PPO. I come in and saw this older female dentist, who proceeded to tell me that she can't do anything for me because she is a specialist and would need referral from a general dentist. Uh, I thought I WAS coming in to see a general dentist? I told her I don't know why (the f***) they made me an appointment to see her, a specialist instead?? And her assistant also told me that they're Delta Premier not Delta PPO providers unlike what I was told over the phone. WTF. I left after 10 minutes, she never even looked at my teeth! Fast forward 2 months later, I get a bill for $200 in the mail from them because my insurance denied paying them. $200 for her not even looking at my teeth, and it's probably denied because I suddenly went to see a specialist without a referral - but I never asked for her and I didn't know I was coming in to see one. A waste of an afternoon and now they want to waste my money too. read more

Let's start by saying that this facility have their name start with UCLA just to mislead the patients and make them think that they are part of UCLA school of dentistry. They are not. In fact they did not admit to me that they where not part of UCLA until I had completed all the admission forms for a consultation for my son and talked to dentist who tried to sell me all kind of unnecessary treatments. That is when I became suspicious and realized that the only thing they where interested in was to make as much money as they can from each patient. I was very disappointed and told the dentist and his staff to be honest and stop pretending that they are part of UCLA school of dentistry to attract patients. I have been to UCLA school of dentistry and have received consultation from the director of that school Dr. Earl Freymiller. He is an honest professional who's primary goal is welfare of his patients, unlike the dentist you meet at so called UCLA Faculty Dental Practice who are only interested in filling their pocket with your money. you are better off going to a dentist who uses his real name for his practice. My daughter had her braces done here by Dr. Ting. He is very nice and I had no problem with him. My issue was last year my daughter went back for a check up, this was her 2nd or 3rd since having her braces removed. I was not informed that not only did the insurance no longer cover the visit, but my insurance ran out for that calendar year. I received a bill for $266, months later, and I mean months, noting the charge as a second opinion? What does that even mean? If I had known I would be charged that much for them to look at her teeth I would have declined the service for her. I mean she goes to the dentist regularly and they are constantly on top of payments, and advise me how much services will be and how to schedule with my budget. To top it off I had to move unexpectedly and misplaced the bill during the move. With Covid and oh my daughter being a senior class of 2020 and being completely stressed out from everything I received another bill stating I would be taken to collections. So I sent what I could pay at that time. I just received a letter stating that a payment plan was never discussed and I needed to pay half by 9/13 and the rest 10/9 or be taken to collections and removed from the practice. I am completely fine with being removed , but hey how about a little courtesy and understanding about what I can afford, especially during these times. I have not received one phone call from them regarding this, and if you are part of this group, you know how hard it is to get through. So I will my daughter will not be returning nor will I recommend them. I will however figure out how to pay this bill. read more

Let me start off by saying I have complicated teeth. Brushing and flossing twice a day for some reason is never enough and I regularly get cavities. I was new to California booked a first time appointment with this office after my tooth chipped. The accommodated me with a same day appointment and I was seen on time unlike some other dental offices where you wait at least 30 minutes past your appointment time. The initial visit was great. The very thorough and educated dentist put a temporary filling and I went back a few weeks later for a permanent filling and deep cleaning. My problem with this office is that they're overly cautious. If you like this type of dentist and have extra cash to spend, then this office is for you. They suggested I needed a laundry list of procedures and a new retainer. Even though I have insurance it was going to cost me over $3,000 so I sought a 2nd and 3rd opinion at other well-known dental offices. Both could not believe the UCLA dental practice recommended such extensive work and said I didn't need it. While it's great to have a very thorough dentist, they also need to take into account that not everyone is wealthy. I have since found a different dentist that while thorough, works with me to prioritize my needs and not empty out my bank account! read more

My actual dentist and the hygenists are great. This review is for the administrative staff. Oy vey. And they're the ones who deal with my money. This matters. My least favorite incident involves the way that they did NOT cancel an order for a mouthguard. My husband had met with his dentist there, who took a mold for a mouthguard. Husband used his FSA card to make payments. Not long after, husband called to cancel the order. Whomever took the call did NOT make note of it because the mouthguard order wasn't cancelled. It got messy with the FSA too, but that's a problem with FSAs (they expected to get reimbursed for the money they dispersed, but it was after the year ended, and they also didn't want to allow us to get that money back through different expenditures... hot mess). If this practice has a CRM, then it isn't being used by everyone, or by the person who took my husband's call since the dental practice had no record of our interactions with them. For all of the talk about electronic record keeping in health care, none of it seems to have promulgated within this particular practice. CRM can be great if it is being used 100% of the time consistently. All in all, I was incredibly pissed off with the billing practices. Lots of room for improvement. I understand that customer service can always be the weak link in any business, and it's not just in demeanor of front line staff. If you have weaknesses in your business rules or how you track your customers, then poof. You have problems and you create problems that can cost hundreds of dollars for your customers, as they did in this case. I am willing to revisit my rating if someone reaches out to me to help me understand what the practice has done in order to tighten these procedures. read more

This is a message for all UCLA staff, students, and members that have SHIP PLUS or GRAD SHIP. You too can come to this incredibly posh and friendly suite of mouth tinkering and tooth mechaneering. Don't make the mistake of going across the street to the student dental clinic where you have the questionable privilege of being drilled into by some fidgety student haphazardly holding a cure gun over your head. That place is literally a hostel of horrors and apathy waiting to happen. I was pleasantly surprised that this place was an available option for graduate students and Delta Dental holders. The office interior is slick, lined with glazed marble, leather seats, and fancy magazines that will make you stick your pinky finger out and chortle with glee as you throw your one dollar bills in the air to "make it rain, dear chap"? An army of assistants wait at your beck and call in the reception area, ready to help you with most insurance and questionnaire information. They also are constantly calling people to confirm appointments, showing this place is usually booked solid for weeks. I had to wait almost 2 weeks for my first appoint, and 2 weeks later for my follow-up one. What can I say: supply and demand? The equipment here are all appear to be advanced machinery imported from the 31st century, so I will assume everything is state of the art. My x-rays were taken very quickly, my cleaning done by a super chill dude named Chris Nucho was very professional, fast, and left my mouth feeling like all plaque, tartar, and bacteria had been purged with extreme prejudice. Words cannot begin to describe how awesome my dentist David Altman was. Dude is a fricking pro. I have never seen a dentist work so fast and dexterously to fix broken fillings and a chipped tooth. For every bit off tooth drilling and fixing he does, he also makes you bite into a mold and grind to make sure your bite is well-adjusted and even, super professional service. Great attitude, really friendly, A+++ would use again. TL;DR: If you want people using heavy machinery in your mouth, there's no better place than here to do it. read more

Made the process of getting x-rays painless and easy to comply with. Last thing tho: the office clearly has an internet connection and is now using technology to check patients in and such. So, it seems reasonable to me that this practice, which i'm certain makes plenty of $$, can well afford to extend wifi access to patients. it really is startling that this practice has wifi for the practice, but does not and will not, allow patients to access the wifi. seems stingy and pretty dumb. read more

I have been seeing Dr. Altman for several years and I am consistently more than satisfied with his work. He is detailed, gentle and talks me through everything he is doing. Every time I have had a filling, he is conscientious of not only the function but of the appearance as well. I have always had great confidence in my teeth thanks to Dr. Altman. In addition, over the years I have had contact with most of the dental hygienists who always do a superior job and the administrative staff works hard to accommodate my schedule every time. My husband and my daughters have also always gone to UCLA for their dental care. My daughters first saw Dr. Clarice Law when they were toddlers and she was their primary doctor through braces and surgery for their wisdom teeth, up until their 18th birthdays.
