My Daughter cut her chin and needed stitches on a Sunday night, so we headed here after being sent by a Sutter Health urgent care center. The ER was hopping and we waited over three, nearly four, hours for the stitches. I get it, my Child wasn't dying--other patients took priority. The doctor who eventually performed the stitches was nice and efficient. The whole procedure took 15, maybe 20 minutes start to finish. Nine stitches to be exact. The shocker was the bill for over $2700. That's the rate with Blue Shield insurance (we have a high deductible plan) and we're on the hook for the full amount. I asked them for a review of the bill because it seemed so high (couldn't be right, right?) but nope, they came back to confirm that that's exactly what it should have cost. To be clear, that's just the facility fee from CPMC's emergency room. The doctor's bill was a separate change. I shudder to think what the bill would be if you actually needed an x-ray or some sort of diagnostic work up. Anyway, proceed with caution and check your insurance--the rates are here are sky high with no justification. Just because they can.

I am alive today due to the superior care from the hospital staff here…read more I was admitted due to shortness of breath/fatigue. Urgent care had previously diagnosed me with pneumonia but that was incorrect. I had a hemoglobin level of 2.8 which was the lowest anyone had ever seen. They didn't think I'd survive (although they didn't tell me that). After multiple transfusions and other tests, I was released after 5 days. My GP says I'm a medical miracle. There is no doubt in my mind that I wouldn't have made it if I didn't have this superior care. Major shout outs to the staff in the emergency room and the nurses in the telemetry unit. They took such wonderful care of me and I am forever grateful.

Postpartum was a nightmare but three nurses in particular were so helpful and never made me feel like I was asking for too much. Donna, Alba and Mary! I hope you ladies get the recognition you deserve because I felt the kindness and warmth extended. I've had an abundance of friends give birth the same year and everyone who gave birth at this location can agree that CPMC is one of the best places to deliver.

I had spine surgery with Dr. Burch last month and was very pleased with the process and results…read more Parking was easy since I was supposed to be outpatient surgery but ended up being hospitalized overnight for pain control. Dr. Burch and the orthopedic spine team are a well oiled machine. My neurosurgeon at UC Davis Medical Group essentially gave up on me and didn't want to do further surgery even though I was in horrific pain and had God awful nerve issues in both feet and legs due to a terrible disc herniation. Dr. Burch was kind enough to see me as a second opinion and was able to see me much quicker than I've ever been seen at UC Davis. He told me it wasn't fair to either of us to formulate a gameplan without updated imaging which I completely agreed with. Upon getting fresh CT and MRI scans he recommended a L4-5 foraminotomy and microdiscectomy. I agreed and we tentatively scheduled surgery the same day for a few months later. I checked in to outpatient surgery and was told they were running a little behind. No biggie; things happen and sometimes there are minor complications or hiccups. I've been that person before so I'm empathetic. I was brought back some time later and changed into my gown and had an IV administered. Dr. Burch came by a bit later and we went over the established gameplan one last time. The anesthesiologist came by a bit later and we went over things one last time before they brought me into the operating room a short time later. I woke up in a little worse pain than I'd anticipated and hoped, but sometimes that's the reality of having multiple spine surgeries in a 10 year period and having scar tissue. They closed me with staples which was a first and they were a little uncomfortable and took a little getting used to but they weren't terrible. They recommended admitting me overnight for pain control and my wife and I agreed. I slept better than I have in any other hospital. UCSF Medical Center was clean and easy to navigate. All of the medical staff were so kind and empathetic. I was discharged fairly early the following morning and we made the trek back to the greater Sacramento area. I've been dealing with chronic lower back pain since 2017 when my car was struck by a distracted driver. I had an open microdiscectomy in 2018 and a endoscopic microdiscectomy in 2025. I feel better than I have in years and my nerve issues have vastly improved. Spine surgery typically doesn't always improve your lower back pain but it oftentimes is successful in improving other issues such as nerve pain or weakness in your feet or legs. I couldn't be happier with the results and I can't thank Dr. Burch, Ariana, the orthopedic spine team, and everyone at UCSF Medical Center for taking great care of me. A special kudos to Ariana and May for helping navigate everything, particularly the curveball my insurance company decided to throw us when they denied the surgery 36 hours beforehand due to "medical necessity." Ariana was able to schedule a peer to peer consultation with my insurance company the following day and helped advocate for the procedure to be done at UCSF since UC Davis couldn't perform it until October. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for a great experience and giving me renewed passion for life. Living with chronic pain is awful and something I wouldn't wish upon anyone and I'm looking forward to beginning physical therapy in the coming weeks and fulfilling my goal of taking my daughters for their first bike ride with daddy on my daughter's 10th birthday in February.

It is…read morebustling with activity, so there is some hurry up and wait involved, but the care and attention to detail is well worth the wait. The hospital food is good! My husband usually complains about food at any place he is, and he is doing well with the hospital food here. The nurses are excellent and he has been seen by doctors from the care team. It may feel as if there is a lack of communication before being admitted, but we found that the nurses and staff are working together to accommodate all of his needs and requests so that once he was in the room, everything was in order and specialist started showing up to see him almost immediately. The MyChart app is extremely helpful as I can confirm that his care is progressing well. Once he is taken into surgery, I will be updated via text in real time and can ask questions of the care team, if necessary. This is far superior to communication from other hospitals. We don't live close to SF, so the drive is a drawback since he is in for a week. And the larger hassle is parking. Valet parking is available, but the hours are limited and getting your vehicle is a challenge. Plus the cost adds up. This means that instead of having visitors twice a day, he will see someone once a day.

My elderly parent unfortunately goes here and they rarely have certain life-preserving medications available where my parent who is not very mobile has to go multiple visits to get the same medication. It's always "come back tomorrow" or "come back next week" or "comeback in two weeks". This is a hospital pharmacy. There should rarely be shortages of any medication. Even some basic portable medical devices that most pharmacies carry have also been delayed. Again, this is a hospital pharmacy. The worst thing is they don't care and the a staff member not involved in the conversation will interject from the other booth, "Is it even covered by insurance?" even though she is not involved in the transaction and it has been covered for years, as if that is an excuse for not having certain important medications available. It's too bad, because the review should be something like 3.5 stars but the extremely poor customer service of the pharmacy brings this down to 1 star automatically. They need clean house and fix what's wrong here so the perceptions of the hospital are not dragged down by this disgrace of a pharmacy. I am willing to upgrade the rating once they prove to us that the pharmacy has improved. I don't see how this can change with the existing management and personnel as the culture as indicated customer service has strong resemblance to the DMV. It makes me think of Seinfeld's Soup Nazi episode where the guy says, "No soup for you!" except replace the lobster bisque with medications! "Serenity now!" ‍‍

I want to express my deepest disapproval of Doctor Evan T Wythe MD…read more I went to the ER after recommended by the Urgent Care nurse because of my severe neck, shoulder and back pain accompanied by symptoms of nausea, dizziness and weakness on my arm. While the staff at the hospital was kind, efficient and professional, I can't say the same for Doctor Wythe. The ER nurse took all the notes of my symptoms for 5-10 minutes, and I waited for another 5-10 minutes until the doctor showed up. Instead of looking at the nurse's notes, he asked me to repeat the symptoms. While I questioned why he didn't look at the nurse's notes, his answer was "because I am the doctor". Then he proceeded asking the nurse "what do YOU think?" in a very sarcastic tone. I was very weak and barely talk but didn't want to continue this drama, so I just repeated my symptoms again. The consultation with the doctor took less than 10 minutes witout involving any medical device. The billing price got back at $1,365!!! Absolutely outrageous!!! Moreover, the medications were not part of the bill. This bill is purely for the ER visit. The level of care provided is unacceptably remote from the price charged!!!

I wish I could say this was a great experience. I have always spoke so highly of UCSF - especially…read morethe ER experience but this time was a colossal failure. If you are a Muslim woman, do not come here, they have ZERO accomodations for women. First, it took them almost 5 days to remove my gallbladder and in that 5 days they wanted to starve me with 5 days of clear liquids and expected me to be functional at the same time. I had to negotiate for solid food until they were ready to remove my gallbladder. Some of the nursing staff was very kind - Soojin, Kaylin (I think her name was, very nice Indian woman) and Leo were very kind and respectful. There was a woman that took me down to surgery from Bahrain that was very kind but could find NO accommodations for me as a Muslim woman and had to use a pillowcase as a hijab - a pillow case, not even a scrub cap but she did the best she could and understood that UCSF was ill equipped for this situation - had I been Christian, Catholic or Jewish I could have had a whole procession if I wanted. Second, I explained to them I am Muslim and their response was basically, "Ok, and?" The first 2 days in the private ER section they take you to while waiting on a room, I constantly had men popping their heads in and out - no warning, nothing. I had the daytime shift manager bark at me and demand I turn off my tablet (that I could barely hear) because I was making noise (imagine that in a room with people shouting and speaking well above normal voice volume all hours of the day and night) and I basically was not allowed some amount of sanity - his behavior was unnecessary. Again, I asked for a little bit of religious understanding - I told them I am here in the US alone, I am originally from Saudi, I have no family with me and I am representing myself but they did not care or even comprehend. It was not until I got into a room that things began to get a little bit better. They put a sign on my door stating no men allowed but that was not the point - men were allowed but I needed warning so that I could be appropriate so they could do their job. There were no clothing options - scrub bottoms were one size, I could not get them up past my thighs. The only thing I had was a gown but my legs were still exposed. No hair covering except my own..... Just no..... Muslim women, stay far away from here - they will do nothing but disrespect you, shame you and offer you ZERO understanding or acceptance. I had to have a friend bring me proper coverage. When it came to discharge, the day after surgery it was basically "get out, you can stay as long as you wish, just not here in the room". I thought I was given time to make arrangements for assistance home, I made plans to have someone get me at 1pm but I needed to be out and in the patient lobby at 11am. They were kind enough to walk me to the elevator and at the elevator I was on my own. By the time I got to the lobby I was drenched in sweat, dizzy and really not prepared for all the movement and stepping etc. I had my home assistance meet me across the street at 350 Parnassus Ave because that was the easiest place to meet instead of at the emergency, I almost feel off the curb stepping down, almost got ran over crossing the street because I could not walk across the street fast enough and by the time I got to 350 I was soaked in sweat, about to throw up and fell up the stairs getting to the lobby so I could sit down which had a bunch of smug kids sprawled out in the chairs texting and looking at the old lady holding her belly and not budging so I could sit down so I had to sit on the table across from them..... All around this was horrible, all I can say is that if you are a Muslim woman - stay away from here - there is a reason I only saw ONE Muslim woman in the 5 days I was there and she cleaned the rooms. I also forgot to mention the halal menu - laughable! I honestly had to laugh. Only 1 person on all shifts knew about the halal menu and had to look hard for it. The halal menu consisted of little snacks that you would typically put in a kids lunch box - slices of cheese, fruit slices blah blah blah - no real meals except for eggs, hope you like eggs!

I had an excellent experience on the Med-Surg unit at CPMC Mission Bernal…read more I was admitted with sepsis caused by E. coli, a urinary tract infection, acute kidney injury, and after several days of essentially no food intake following food poisoning. Needless to say, I wasn't feeling my best. The quality of nursing care was outstanding. Every nurse I met was knowledgeable, efficient, funny, compassionate, and remarkably responsive. Call lights were answered almost immediately, and despite what I know must have been a busy unit, no one ever made me feel rushed. What stood out most was the teamwork. I'm a very difficult IV stick and also required both straight catheterizations and a Foley catheter. Whenever hospital policy required more than one nurse to be present, someone appeared almost instantly to help. Throughout my stay I repeatedly watched nurses jump in to assist one another. It was clear that this is a team that genuinely likes and supports each other, and patients benefit from that culture. I also appreciated that nearly everyone providing my care was an experienced nurse. The only trainees I encountered were a couple of wonderful nursing students from Samuel Merritt and USF, who were friendly, enthusiastic, and appropriately supervised. The food deserves its own paragraph. It was genuinely good, and the dietary staff happily prepared customized meals for me every day as I recovered. That's not something I usually expect from hospital food. The facility itself is beautiful, comfortable, modern, and extremely well maintained. Everything worked exactly as it should, and even my guests commented on how nice the hospital was. As a clinician myself, I pay attention to how teams function. This unit was impressive. The staff was highly competent, extraordinarily efficient, and somehow still managed to be warm, funny, and genuinely enjoyable to spend time with. Highly recommended.

The same screen is available in San Francisco for $85 out of pocket. Her doctor did not mention the excessive charge for this drug screen when she offered it to my partner, and when we asked for an explanation for billing and an adjustment to a more reasonable charge after the fact, they refused and were completely unhelpful. We made a mistake here and should have done more research ahead of time, but this absurd charge should never have happened in the first place. If you don't want to be overcharged for mediocre care, do not go here.

My family member came here for same-day surgery and we experienced great care!…read more The WOWs: +Every member surgery team all came to meet us in pre-op, to take detailed history, ask/answer questions, confirm which body part they are working on, and addressed all concerns. Everyone showed great compassion and the team was very effective. +They were able to give fairly accurate timeframes for every step of the process. +I especially appreciated the constant text communications, so I knew how my family member was doing and when I need to come back to pick them up. +The surgeon and nurse both individually called me to debrief the surgery and review post-op care. The meds were sent to the correct pharmacy and we had no trouble picking up everything and going straight home. +I also called the on-call doctor in the middle of the night and they got back to me quickly to address concerns. +All the staff we encountered were professional and helpful. Improvements needed: -One thing that they could have communicated better was that only 1 caregiver was allowed to be in the pre-op with the patient. My sibling came and had to wait outside. -The hand IV access was a bit painful according to my family member, but he is a hardstick. Maybe they can add a "vein whisperer" phlembotomist for hardstick patients. -The coordinator was a little hard to reach at the beginning of this medical journey, but she advocated for us and was able to swoop us last minute appointments so treatment wasn't delayed. From first contact with UCSF to the surgery, with all the imaging in between, it took about 8 weeks. Surgery dates are scheduled based on urgency of the condition. For us, we felt the timeframe was reasonable. -The CT machine went down on Sunday, the night before the appointment. They left us a voicemail on Sunday night to reschedule, but there was no one to talk to until Monday. We showed up for the imaging appt anyhow (because the doctor needed to see the scans the same day) and they were able to pencil us in at an alternative location nearby. It was quite nerve-wrecking on Sunday night and I can see how that can be confusing for non-healthcare background patients to figure this all out. Overall: some hiccups at the beginning, but the rest of it was mostly smooth and the surgery team was excellent. Primary insurance: Medicare
