Although I already have my own ukulele, this store has an amazing selection of ukuleles ranging in price. I went to this store to look for sheet music and chord sheets since I am a beginner. There were more selections at this store than other stores that I have gone to. The owner, Tyler, was very knowledgeable (history, wood types, sound differences, for example), and also gave me a quick mini lesson on strumming. I ended up buying a music book with Bob Marley songs, a a chords sheets that also shows the musical note! So glad I stopped in here! read more

There are many ukulele shops in Hawaii. You can easily find any make or model. BUT, this shop is different. The owner, Tyler,is often in the store and is generous with his time. He is a ukulele musician who has selected the instruments in his shop to meet the various needs of his customers. In his store you don't find just any ukulele's that factories or makers have sent him, but instead Tyler has selected instruments, using his talents, so the you can trust what you see as the cream of the crop. I took my time and talked to Tyler five or six times. There are cheaper ukuleles elsewhere, but I know I purchased an instrument that is worth the money, and I have a new trusted friend in Tyler to whom I can return for help and advice. Let me start with, I did not meet the owner. I was assisted by a very kind and knowledgeable Japanese lady. My review is really for her service and the store itself. I know nothing about ukes, except that I bought one for my son for Christmas and he wanted another since I was in Hawaii. The sales lady was the only one in the store and busy with multiple customers. But she still made time to answer my many questions. It was exciting just to set foot in this store, with all those dangling beauties beckoning for me to strum them. I've always wanted to learn and thot I'd pay them a visit to ask them a few questions. Maile was suuuuper friendly and helpful, and chatted with me about so many uke things and took her time answering my questions and playing for me so i can hear the difference btn them. She told me about the free lessons daily and recommended I come back tomorrow for one. Back I went the next day and OMG it was fabulous. There were 8 students and we each borrowed a uke. Can you believe they loaned us their ukes?!?! Anyhoo, Maile taught us 3 chords, and from that, taught us 3 songs that we could sing and play along. I couldn't believe I learned 3 songs. My first day. I wanted to cry I was so ecstatic. Tyler, the manager I think, was so very informative on how he chooses each and every uke that's hanging, and imparted his knowledge to me readily. I ended up getting a four-figure priced ukulele with several albums from Jake Shimabukuro. There was some twist and turns for the payment since we're from Canada and my card keep getting declined. Showed up for a Monday 10:30am free ukelele lesson. The gentleman working that day was super nice. We waited for others but nobody showed up so I had a "private" lesson. However I only learned what each string was. There were other reviews that say they play a song, I did not. Still was fun to try out and there was absolutely no pressure to purchase anything. I love playing the piano but living in a tiny apartment with thin walls is not really conducive for such a large instrument. I was in HI for a few weeks for work and fell in love with the sound of the ukulele and decided to see if I could find a decent little starter one to bring back with me both as a souvenir and as a new instrument to learn. Tyler was super helpful from the moment I walked in. He explained the different types and sizes of ukuleles and picked out a few to let me hold so I could see what felt good (I have long-ass arms and giant man hands for a girl who's only 5'2 so this step was pretty important). He strummed little tunes on several different instruments so I could hear their sound quality, tone, brightness, etc. He also showed me some cheaper Chinese-made imported ukes that were about half the price of the Hawaiian-made ones I was eyeing, but ultimately I decided that I'd come all this way and didn't mind splurging on something beautiful, well-made, and Hawaiian. Once I made my choice, he suggested an intro book to help me pick up the basics and a soft case to protect my instrument while traveling. He threw in a tuner for free and showed me how to tune the strings. He told me to email him if I have any questions in the future. They do offer free beginner classes; unfortunately it was the end of my trip so I didn't get to attend one, but if I'm ever back in town I will definitely pencil in some time to check out one of their classes. Now that I've made it back home and have started learning basic chords, I love my uke even more and I'm extremely pleased with the choice I made. Every time I play it, it brings back beautiful memories of the brief time I got to spend in Hawaii. Both the sound and the look of the instrument are superb. Wow!!! There are so many kinds of ukuleles here! From the basic, beginner ones to the fancy smancy ones and even ones with six strings!!! I'm no ukulele expert but the owner is and boy, can he talk up a storm about ukuleles, music and everything!!! Super friendly, knowledgeable, helpful and fun people here! A guy whose name (but Tyler was the other guy) I don't recall taught 4 of us 3 chords and two songs. It was pretty fun. Two of us wound up buying ukes, both over $200. You can get a beginner model (like the one we learned on) for less than $100. But I tried several, and the more expensive ones do sound better. I also got a couple of music books. They unfortunately were out of the beginner instruction books. But, there's plenty on Youtube. The entire right wall is Hawaiian ukuleles, and the entire left wall is imported. Left wall seemed to be mostly from China, generally of good to fine quality, and cheaper. I bought from the Hawaiian side, because...well, after all, we're in Hawaii. This store widely advertises free ukulele lessons twice a day. We attended the 10:30 class on 5/31/19 and couldn't have been more disappointed. The only person working in the store was very grumpy and it was clear he didn't want to teach the class. Our group included 3 people and then there were 2 Asian attendees that didn't speak much English. He made jokes about them during the class and was generally rude. If you're holding the class to attract people into your store, you should be more friendly and then try to show them a starter kit they could buy instead of running them out of the store with your inhospitable attitude. read more

This was by far the best shopping experience I have ever had. We were on vacation in Hawaii and my son was looking to buy a Ukulele. We were referred to this store by a local guide. We were helped by Jesse Sato who is extremely helpful and informative. His genuine love for playing Ukulele really shows. He helped my son pick one out that fit his needs. Great store and Taylor is wonderful. Got my first Ukulele here yesterday. I have no idea on how to get started on my first one and I am also afraid that those tourist shop would be pricy. I basically read every single review on yelp about highly rated ukulele stores and wanted to check out this one first. The store is located in the second floor so it can be tricky to find following google map. Taylor is amazing. He never following you and try to make a sale, but whenever you needed him he always be there. He is very easygoing and really know what to do with a ukulele. Really rude employees, I picked up a little card on a stack that had ukulele chords on it to read it and the employee screamed at me and said "Those are not for free!" Like okay cool I'll put it back, you don't have to make a big deal out of it. That was just one thing, there were like two other incidents. This place was not kid-friendly. When my kids were trying to play the ukuleles at the store, the older guy was so worry that my kid might damage their ukuleles. "Be careful, you might scratch it." If we don't try out the ukuleles, how do we know if it sounds good or not. My other child was just pointing at a ukulele to me, but the older guy rush over and said, "Be careful". Come on....the kid was just pointing and not picking it up. I experienced better services at other stores. Tyler was much better.
