I've never been embarrassed to write about my love for thrift shopping. I've purchased wooden chairs, chest of drawers, rustic end tables, funky lamp bases, metal home accessories, etc with no end in sight. And all it takes is a bucket of warm soapy water, a good cotton small towel to clean these hard surfaces. Now, where I seriously and I mean- seriously draw the line are sofas, mattresses, cushions, pillows, etc. and that to me, is just gross. No offense to anyone. Hubs and I noticed a gently-used $2300+ Pottery Barn dining table at this Kingston, NY ReStore for a flat $700. The poundage on this 8' monstrosity of a dinner table had me sold. Except, it was 2' too big for my dining room. But the price was killer. This ReStore is spacious with furniture gathered into groups. For instance, chest of drawers are grouped together, coffee tables in another group, lamps together, etc. There's leven a back room filled construction items like kitchen/bathroom tiles, hammers, etc ridiculously inexpensive. As with all 'donation' stores you sometimes get lucky. At times I have been showered with the blessings of angels in this store. While renovating a house a few years ago I hesitated to order the (midrange) front door I liked at Lowes. Then I found a brand new top of the line door I knew retailed for over 4 grand here. It was $500. (The security hardware I had to special order was $350). Deal! A gorgeous queen 4-poster bed was $50. All the sinks I wanted. Someone left low stars for signs asking us not to bargain (like it was a personal insult). I just think of the poor employees who can't lower already reasonable prices and are hounded to the point where those signs are necessary for their sanity. Then they are further insulted on Yelp. I donate and shop here to support this great organization. Try it... you may get lucky too. read more

All following comments must be balanced with the fact that this is a supposed charity but that is no excuse for unreliability. After making arrangements to have furniture I donated picked up, the driver was flakey and uncooperative and just left the furniture there after I made all the arrangements. I love checking in to the restore to see what treasures they have gotten in. I've bought a boys bicycle, a beautiful little wooden chest, and my friends have gotten a new refrigerator, a sweet reclining loveseat and multiple other pieces of furniture. Way overpriced and very limited building supplies. A Kenmore stacked washer and dryer $400 and a stapler for $9. I picked up a planter for $3 and a Xmas item for $2. Unless I happen to be going past I'll never go out of my way to come to this restore. And please don't bother to say "but it's for a good cause". I'm one of those people that they're supposed to be helping. I'll keep to Craigslist where I've picked up a sink and faucet for $75 for both (not each) and a Frigidaire apt dishwasher for $35. Then to add insult to injury they only offer veterans discount on Thursdays. And then are closed the Thursday before Christmas. read more

Whenever I visit my mom I try and make it out to the Ulster County Habitat Store. The store we have in my home town of Syracuse is only building materials and has terrible hours. Where the hours here are also a bit restrictive I can usually find time to pop in and see what treasures I can find. They usually have a great mix of small housewares, furniture, bikes, building materials etc. I have bought a few large pieces from this place before and have always gotten a good deal. I also like that when I spend my money here it goes to help habitat for humanity. read more

We called the Restore people to come and pick up a very nice and in good condition sideboard, that belonged to my Grandmother, but is old fashioned and too big for our use any more. We were in the backyard working when they arrived, so they pulled into the driveway in their truck, and if they came to the front door, we didn't hear them. They didn't knock or ring the bell, so they left after a few minutes without us hearing them. I went to the front to leave, and they had very seriously plowed up the wood that lines the driveway, with the back bumper of their truck. I took pictures of the damage to the wood driveway, which we had literally hired someone to paint just a few days before. When we stopped by to show them the pictures of the damage they'd done, they called us Liars and said no one had been there when they arrived. Not only did they do damage to our driveway, but there was a piece of the cap to the light from the back of the truck. They wood lining the driveway was in perfect shape before they arrived, and literally just after they left we saw the damage they'd done. It is a quiet dead end street, so no one else had pulled into our driveway that day. We have purchased items from them in the past and were willing to donate some very nice pieces of furniture to them, but not only will we never do so again, I will make sure that I tell every single person I know what absolute lying dirtbags work there. They need to take responsibility for the damage they've done and do the right thing. read more

It was funny the other day last weekend when I came in here looking for a footstool/ottomon to use with the chair we got from the Dutchess County ReStore about a week before. I got in to see prominently displayed a sign that says "no bargaining"...but it goes farther than that. It goes on to tell the customer "we don't accept bargains", so don't try to bargain with us." I know you are a thrift store, but using force to ensure you don't get something used against you won't make us - the customer - feel that we made the right deal. I wish I would have walked out at that point. But I powered through the rest of the store, seeing what other bargains they had. The place got rather snippy when we asked about what we were looking for and said "what they have out is all that they have" and when we continued to look around at other things, we found there to be no real value of coming into this store for anything because they have nothing at decent prices that's of any decent quality. Stuff out in the back of the store near the doors smelled moldy or was looking rotten or even looked warped in some cases. I wouldn't really want to buy that garbage. read more

Those jokers can stay away - more gems for me. They get a ton of good stuff here from bikes to furniture to rugs. they have a lot of stuff downstairs so ask if you don't see. Everyone is super friendly and you support a good cause. This restore doesn't get a lot of building supplies, that's true, so go to the one in Hudson if that's what you want. read more

Habitat for Humanity Re Stores really never have a high reputation for books, CDs, DVDs and records. The stores main draw is building supplies. Fair enough. Because obviously it's obvious that really nothing that great comes in. It looks like better donations go to the Aid For Tibet store or Goodwill. Recodds are two a piece. In this day and age of the "vinyl revival" every thrift store thinks they can get two dollars or more for falling apart -classical or Barry Manillow records. Not the case. So the records sit there while new stuff seemingly never comes in. Same with CDs and DVDs. Looks like they don't get many donations. Hope this changes soon. read more
