Idk what I just experienced walking into this location that I've frequented for a few years now, but it was subpar today at the very least. I originally went into this location because I knew from past visits they have a very good men's fragrance line. Upon walking into the men's fragrance department I was greeted by a young African American woman whose first greeting to me was "Hello, just looking"? A bit sarcastically. I responded that I was looking for John Varvatos since I've seen it in this location before, of which she replies "Idk who that is" I was a bit surprised but not completely taken aback & told her he is a famous fashion designer etc. She seemed shocked as to how knowledgeable I was with the fragrances. I used to work in Nordstrom in the men's department selling fragrances, & designer goods. John Varvatos of which was one I often pushed for sales. Tom Ford was my highest seller. Upon not finding any, I saw there was a new Prada & proceeded to ask about that & if there was a tester for it. They didn't have one available for that either so she went to the front to go check. Whist this is happening, the security was eyeing me down the entire time as if I looked suspicious which was extremely strange in my experience. The associate had returned to me stating they can't make a tester/have any testers etc. Upon hearing this all I replied back jokingly was "Man you guys don't have anything I want today huh"? Of which she replied back rudely with "WELL IM SORRY FOR THAT". I had to make it clear that I wasn't upset with her & it was out of her control, it's a corporate thing not her decision. I then asked who specifically worked in the fragrance department to which I got the snarkiest reply of "We all work in the fragrance department". Sooooo what are you guys, Legion?? That was a bold faced lie, I've been in this EXACT location before & have been helped by individuals who worked in that department specifically, so I have no idea why she lied like that about something so minuscule. I Explained my background in fragrance to which I immediately felt as if I was getting profiled, of which I told her thank you for your help. A young gentleman approached me from I believe the hairdressing department & offered assistance for me in the fragrance department of which I obliged. I asked him about the new Prada fragrance of which he took me to where they were located & low & behold all of them were just sitting on a shelf. Whist he's showing & explaining to me the new fragrances, this security is STILL eyeing the hell out of me & looking at me with a very bothered face. Upon seeing this I removed my sunglasses & ask "Is there a problem with me being in here right now? Am I asking too many questions, what seems to be the issue I've been in this store plenty times before" The securities response was "I'm just doing my job sir"... Yeah & I'm just shopping & so far you guys are giving me abysmal service. I proceeded to work with the gentleman that approached me of which I thanked him for his excellent customer service & proceeded to walk out because I truly did not like how I actually was being profiled for the first time in a VERY LONG TIME. All by my own people at that . Very disappointed with this recent trip. I appreciate the gentleman that helped me & ensured to find an answer for me instead of just saying "Idk where this is". I would have never made a customer feel as uncomfortable in my department or the store period as those two individuals prejudicially made me feel. I collect fragrances for a living nearly & always ask associates questions about notes etc. When it comes down to excellent customer service, it truly comes down simply to treat others the way you'd like to be treated. . The first time I went into an Ulta was when they opened the East Brunswick store on Route 18. Now I see them pop up everywhere. I've always found it fun to browse around and buy a few Knick knacks along the way but I've never made any serious purchases until recently....and from that I became a platinum member. This is when I became aware of how great their promos are. Although their normal prices may be high, they have some great promos when you can stock up on favorites. If you check on-line, you can also check out all the available "free gifts with purchase". I bought a babybliss styling iron and it came with both a travel size babybliss hair dryer and flat iron! Half of the store feature your drugstore type brands and the other half feature premium brands such as Lancôme and Clinique which never go on sale in dept stores. At Ulta, however, there are several times a year when they mail out their 20% off prestige brands which you can apply. They also have a great return policy. As long as the product is less than 20% used, you can return within 60 days. If you are a rewards member and lost your receipt, they can try and look it up for you. read more

Our Ulta salon in East Brunswick is wonderful. It's a cross between a small Sephora, an upscale beauty products store and a $$$ hair salon. I shop here about twice a month. It's convenient and has enough of the major brands to keep a lipstick/lipgloss aficionado happy. I also had a quick wash and blow dry on two separate occasions, most recently yesterday with Kendra, who was lovely and talented with the blow dryer and a curling iron lol! The prices are reasonable and when they have a sale the prices can't be beat. And they're always seems to be a sale on just what I need that day. OK want not need lol. Shop and Enjoy! read more

I do like Ulta for picking up beauty supplies. They have a vast assortment and once you sign up for their card you get coupons in the mail, which is nice. I recently bought the Chi flat iron for about half the regular price at Ulta. It is a great tool for straightening curly hair and minimizing frizz. Ulta carries everything you can think of, even facial wax and hair pieces. However, do be careful that you don't spend all of your money, it can be downright dangerous. read more

The customer service at the East Brunswick Ulta has always been less than stellar. However, I finally couldn't take their lack of professionalism anymore. The salon is great. I had my hair done and had a facial at their salon and was pleased with each service. Out of the other Ulta's in the area, this has one of the better salon services. However, I have not returned to the salon in years because I don't feel comfortable around the sales team. East Brunswick is a pretty laid back town. The majority of stores in East Brunswick get far fewer customers than Edison or Freehold. I have worked in retail in both East Brunswick and Freehold, there is no excuse for such blatant laziness and rudeness in a town of old-fashioned residents. The sales associates act like they're in a high school cafeteria. One cashier swore right in front of me as she was chatting to the cashier next to her. You are pretty much invisible to the sales associates as they are more interested in socializing rather than working. For this location, Ulta should take a page from Amazon's book and just make this store a self-checkout location. Chances are, firing their sales team and converting to a self-checkout system would probably boost sales. The biggest problem I had was when a sales associate suspected me of stealing and asked me if I needed anything. I was looking at my phone because I had a doctor's appointment in 15 minutes. I was very confused, because she was frowning at me. I didn't work in retail for very long, but I'm pretty sure you don't ask a customer if they need help while frowning at them. After I told her I was fine, she said "okay" and walked away. I'm an autistic adult and I worked in retail for a little bit. I had to deal with many customers who took pictures of store merchandise to create knock-offs overseas. Whenever I confronted them, I still smiled and told them NICELY that the store does not allow customer photography of our items. These customers all did things against store policy and were probably trying to profit off of their photos. But even me, someone with a history of autism and social difficulty, knew that I still needed to put on a good face. What did I do at Ulta? I checked the time and was immediately suspected of theft (which I don't have a problem with because I am very indecisive so I do seem suspicious sometimes) and was treated like I was inconveniencing the sales team. I don't think I'm going back to this Ulta location for a while. I like Ulta's organic skincare products, but I think I'm going to shop at the Freehold or Manalpan locations more often. The sales teams never intimidated me when they may have suspected me of stealing (Seriously, I'm really indecisive so shopping can be pretty difficult for me. Worst ulta ever literally wanted 2 things to buy and repeated my phone number twice and she never confirmed who I was so I figured she had it and then when I was trying to email myself the receipt it was not my email and she kept telling me to press cancel and then she reached over herself and emailed the random person my receipt and when I tried to tell her she didn't give me my recept or points she just said well it's finished now. Have a nice day and wouldn't work with me to get them back bc it was too much work for her to void thay transaction since I didn't get a receipt to do so... And redo the transaction. So now I don't have any of my points or a way to prove I purchased my products. The greeter also was extremely rude to my mother when my mother just wanted help picking out a mascara. I came here desperate for some help in finding a good concealer to cover a blemish on my face. I was greeted by two people (that was nice). I asked one of them for helping finding a product I had heard good things about. She led me to the line I was looking for and was honest (also good) about her opinion of the product (too thick and cakey). While she was helping me, another employee reached out to her via the headset. She replied that she'd be "right there". She started walking away from me so I asked if they don't help customers with actual application and such. She was quick to respond that she was a manager and a manager was being called to the front so she had to go. Her tone was rude and unprofessional. She also told me that in the evenings there are only two people on the floor and actually slapped her leg while doing so. I am a reasonable person. I understand being short staffed and feeling you are being pulled in many different directions. I also understand that there is a kind way of letting someone know you are needed else where for a moment. This assistant manager should know better. She seems cranky and annoyed. She did eventually help me find the products I needed, but I never felt she wanted to help or cared about the interaction. You work in a beauty store- where people go to feel good and find products that solve their problems or make them happy. Cheer up and lighten up! There are so many places to buy makeup. This might not matter to the assistant manager but it should matter to whomever owns the franchise. This unfriendliness will turn people away. read more

I've been shopping in Ulta's all over. I used to travel to the one in Watchung, NJ so happy they opened the East Brunswick location a few years ago. It's so close and convenient and everytime I walk in the associates are so friendly and eager to help. I'm a regular with Stacey in the salon and I'm so happy. This is a fun store, aimed mostly at women. The store sells perfume, bodywash, and loads of cosmetics. And, cosmetics is what this store is known for. The store is nice and large, and very clean. It's a little understaffed, but it's excusable. The pricing to me is a bit pricey. $40 for perfume. I've never heard of something so high! The staff is friendly, and move very quickly, despite the store being understaffed. The store is a lot larger, than the North Brunswick location. I will not be returning to this location. I went in to the store when they opened shortly after 10. No one greeted me or asked if I needed assistance. They were all talking amongst each other but didn't seem to care that there were customers in the store. The store was messy and unorganized, not how a store should look upon opening. When I went to check out the associate didn't say anything until I said hello and then proceeded to act as though I was as an inconvenience for shopping there during their opening hour. I've been shopping at this location for almost 2 years. While I have no complaints about the store section, I did have a disappointing experience at the salon. It was my first time booking an appointment and the only reason I did was because they sent me one of their deceiving, hard to understand coupons in their flyer they mail me. I merely made an appointment for a blowout because I read the coupon wrong (I thought it was advertising to be 50% discounted, turns out you need to spend $50 in products first). Again, confusing/annoying "coupon" scheme per usual. Anyway, I should have just cancelled the appointment for the overpriced $40 blowout but I figured it would turn out amazing due to the price point and I still wanted to treat myself. Big mistake. The girl who took me was the "salon manager" so I thought woo-hoo the $40 will so be worth it in the end! Wrong again. As soon as she started blow drying my hair I became nervous. Being an avid blowout getter, I can ALWAYS tell when I will & will not be pleased with the end result. I knew where this was headed. She was tugging & pulling at the large sections of hair she took, my hair kept getting caught in her cheap round brush, and in my peripheral vision was my frizzy hair in the mirror. Great. The whole time, she kept trying to make conversation with me despite my lack of reciprocation; again, I'm not someone who wants to chat away while getting a service for I consider this "me time" and wanna be left alone. She clearly wasn't picking up on that. She finished by telling me repeatedly that my hair looks amazing and I needed to go out for a "night on the town" when I felt like I just needed to just go home and re-do/fix my hair. Not how the end of a service should feel, especially at $40 a pop. I even tipped her 20%. I feel bad writing this because she was very nice and seemed genuinely happy to do my hair & make me feel good, but I hate paying for shoddy work. I've visited a few Ulta locations including the one on Rt 18. This is by far the worst one. I stopped coming here and started going to the one in Watchung. (Trust me, it's worth the extra drive) Or I just simply order and restock online. Some of the employees are nice, others not so much. Very rude/cold, they don't ask if you need help kind of people. I really wanted a haircut and had to go to the Ulta on Rt 18 since they had some open appointments. I got my haircut there by Paige and I was so disappointed with the outcome. I showed her a picture of exactly what I wanted and she just glanced at it. I figured she knew what she was doing. This was not the first time I had gotten a haircut from this Ulta, most of the time it came out decent. Now, the picture of what i showed her was short hair to the chin but was clearly texturized with styling tools and products. It was all the same length on the bottom. Paige decided to cut my hair to my chin AND layer it. I never said I wanted my hair layered. She then proceeded to take a straightener to my ASIAN STRAIGHT HAIR. WHO DOES THAT? Before I go off the handle, hair is hair. I know it'll grow back. But when I show you a picture of hair that is clearly texturized and wavy, DO NOT use a flat iron and straightened my already straight hair. THANKS. read more

My dead grandmother's (God rest her soul) left pinky toe has more customer service sense then all of the employees in this store combined. I decided to come to ULTA Beauty on a specific brand of hair spray product which luckily they had. But the employees of this store really need to be re-trained in customer service or be fired for a clean slate. During my checkout, the cashier Rebecca asked if I had a rewards card and if not, would I consider signing up. I replied no since I don't frequent ULTA anyway. Then she proceeded to ask if she can give my purchase rewards points to another shopper at another counter. That was the very first time I have had that question brought up to me. So someone else can take advantage of my purchase by gaining the points that I paid for??? I kindly replied, no. She then proceeded to ask me 2 more times and eventually gave my purchase # to the other shopper anyway. Weren't we taught at elementary school that NO means NO? I mean, it could have had a different intention, but the reply is the same. If this was a corporate owned store then ULTA beauty really needs to retrain some of the employees at this store. If its franchised, then buyer be warned. The price a store charges is not only for the merchandise, but also for the entire experience. Learn from other companies such as Nordstrom and Apple. I have always had a good experience at this store and found great products. The two stars are for the salon services... First when I got there I had to wait 10+ minutes for my appointment, which I get it, does happen. The stylist was very rough with my shampoo wash and kept getting water down my back and in my ears. Uncomfortable to say the least. The blowout I asked for came out great and I felt really pretty! The reason I'm upset is that they charged me $56 instead of $27 like I originally thought. When I asked the person to explain this, they gave me some lame explanation of levels of stylists and texture of hair. Online it clearly states a classic blowout is $27 and what I was charged for was the "bombshell blowout" even though in my opinion she didn't do that. I love Ulta as a company and would give the corporation 5 stars. I remember being so excited when this Ulta was built a few years ago, since the closest one previously was in Holmdel, over 30 minutes away! However, I give just a 3-star rating for this particular store, because customer service and store cleanliness are pretty hit or miss. I suppose that is because it tends to be very busy, being located on Route 18. I don't venture much into the high-end area, but if you come at a busy hour, the drugstore makeup area is in such disarray, with all kinds of items randomly put in the wrong areas, and many items out of stock. (I'm not sure how often they restock, but most stores do so once a week.) I do understand that the store can only have so many staff members scheduled at any given time, due to payroll, but it's slightly frustrating if I can't find what I need because the store is such a mess, and difficult to get ahold of a store associate for help. As for customer service, some associates are very nice and helpful, while others seem to be more curt, and perhaps are slightly annoyed that I'm admittedly somewhat cheap (I usually have a few coupons, and often buy just one item from the clearance section when there's a free GWP offer, if there's nothing else I need). However, that seems to be the norm in the beauty retail industry. As for Ulta as a company, they have a great variety of items at fair prices, offer a lot of opportunities for savings, often give out deluxe-sized samples of free products, and have special events every so often. They also have a salon, which I've never been to. Maybe someday. While I also love shopping at Harmon and Sally's for my beauty needs, I will continue to shop here for makeup and skin care. read more

I usually do my own makeup but I've been to Ulta once prior in Paramus to get my makeup done for an event and I was very pleased with the results so I decided to give Ulta a try again for a wedding I had to attend. Upon arrival, my mua "Victoria" greeted me at the register and escorted me to her seat. I explained in detail exactly what I wanted and what did I receive? The absolute opposite! She was the most unprofessional mua I have ever come across. First off, she asked what brand of foundation I preferred and when I told her the brand my skin is used to as I have sensitive skin, she used a completely different product and the wrong shade (telling me she'll do a darker coat over it because I have tan skin) I let it slide as I thought the more she does on my face it'll come together but it kept getting worst. She contoured my face or tried to atleast and whatever she did defeated the entire purpose of contouring in the first place, she made my nose bridge wider and my cheek bone contour almost touched my chin. I ask for a smoked out under eye in a royal/cobalt blue shadow (I showed her the exact color of what I wanted) and she came to my chair with a navy blue foil eyeliner and literally colored under my eye on my skin (not on the waterline), don't talk about the lashes...... she stuck my right lash wayyyyyyyy above my lash line which had a huge gap and when I told her about it she said it looked fine. I told her I didn't want any highlighter or anything with shine or glitter on my face and that's exactly what I received. When I told her again that I didn't want that she seemed to be more upset than I was. This is a place of business and I'm paying for a service and as a mua she should listen to what her clients want and do just that. I was never rude to her once I just told her that it's fine that she didn't know what I'm asking for and I'll do it myself at home (her response was ok np) She gave me my ticket and I paid $69 for a service that I had to go home and fix 75% of which shouldn't have been the case. I DID NOT tip her as I don't believe she deserved a tip as that is optional and up to the client. The thing is, the products she used wasn't BAD, she just doesn't know how to do makeup and she needs to go back to school to get trained properly on working with ppl of color and learning different shades to different skin tones! read more

I was at the East Brunswick, NJ store earlier today. Everything was great until it was time for me to checkout. I was waiting in line to be helped when I realized the woman at the register was not wearing her mask, it was resting on her neck not covering anything on her face. She was touching her face and touching the counter and credit card machine. When she left the store and was my time to check out, I asked the cashier to sanitize the credit card machine (since I knew I was going to use it) and I also asked why she allowed the woman before me not to wear her mask! She looked at me like I was asking a ridiculous question, and said she didn't notice. Rolling her eyes and trying to give some excuse she began to get flustered. That's when another woman, Nicole the manager stepped in. I asked the same question and explained what happened. She began to tell me that it was ok because the woman had it on her neck, and that it's required to have one but not wear. I thought that was the most ridiculous answer you could give to someone at this time. i would of understand if they apologized and owned up to being incompetent with the rules that are clearing posted everywhere! As I left the store super uncomfortable, I checked the door where requirements are posted in order to enter.
