I still really enjoy what Ulta has to offer, but it seems like at their new location in this shopping center, they must have cut down in cashier times. The last 3 times I've gone there's only been one cashier and at least 3 people waiting. Meanwhile, there's always sales people on the floor just standing around. I'm not sure if they are not allowed to cashier or something, but more than one cashier on weekends and after 4 or 5pm on week nights would really be helpful. Camille at the Clinique counter is wonderful! She took the time to help me match the correct colors and product. She probably spent at least an hour with me. Very personable & professional. The reason for the 3 stars is most of the time when I go to both the 119th & the 135th locations, there are 2-3 employees playing make-over off to the corner. I can hardly find any help. I went to the cut-a-thon for the breast cancer research foundation as soon as I walked into the store I was greeted by the sales associate Thomas at the counter. He was very friendly and knowledgeable. The store was clean and organized. Alyssa cut my hair and she did a terrific job. I am extremely satisfied with my visit to Ulta. I just paid $40 to have prom make up done on my daughter. She did her own brows and put on her own eyelashes, so all she needed was base, contour, eyes and lips. The young make up "artist" was pleasant but unprepared. We arrived on time as we were on a tight schedule but for the next 15 minutes we sat while the cosmetologist slowly walked around gathering the make up. Ok, I get that make up needs are individualized and are gathered last minute for the client. But why did she have to gather the brushes, primer and finisher? Shouldn't some basics be prepped before the client arrives? Kinda like a hair dresser gathering scissors, cape, hair products when the client arrives. Certainly not professional but ok. However the biggest problem I had was that she used "tester" eye products that cannot be properly sanitized. I cannot imagine using powered eye make up that any random person from the public has had their nasty fingers in then placing that same product on someone's eyes. I didn't see that the products the cosmetologist was using were marked "tester" until she was finished. It really kinda grossed me out. My daughter came home and removed the eye make up and reapplied using her own products. What a waste of time and money. (The make up artist I have used in the past have their own products that only they use with properly sanitized applicators. They protect them zealously and no one would dream of putting their fingers in their kits.) Update : contacted store manager and salon manager. They are gladly refunding my money and they assured me that they will look to implement better sanitation practices in the future. Good luck. read more

I would have done the online survey, but I actually lost my Ulta receipt. I have had my hair done twice at this location, and both times, the stylists were very knowledgeable and friendly. I have very thick, curly hair and it is difficult to manage so having a team of hair experts who can give solid advice about how to keep it from frizzing and looking like a mess (and not a hot mess) is certainly a benefit. Shelby was fantastic and actually talked me out of doing something crazy to my hair (getting a bob would actually look more like a mushroom cloud on my head.) Instead she cut my hair at chin length and layered it. It's short enough that I don't feel it weighing on my back and it looks stylish and neat. It also never tangles. Also, I must say, Ulta carries Redken which carries the best products for curly, thick hair. read more

The first time I stepped foot into this Ulta location (and my first time to Ulta ever) I had just come from Marshalls next door. I had my 1 and 2 yr old children with me and decided to keep them in the cart I had used at Marshalls so they would be contained. I mean let's be real for moment, this place is eye candy to a grown up so imagine if you're a curious little monster that has an uncontrollable desire to touch everything in sight and then taste it as if that will solve the mystery as to what it is. So as soon as I opened the thick glass door and proceeded to push my shopping cart through it I heard a voice say "Excuse me, we don't allow carts in our store for insurance purposes so you will have to leave that outside". Um really? So better to have two small children free to roam and touch than in a cart? Not sure what is more likely to result in a phone call to the insurance company, a grown woman pushing a cart or two children making a beeline for the first display of candy colored lotions and potions. I am not the kind of mom who let's my kids run wild in public places and I realize its not fair to them or myself to put them in a place of temptation to do such. I certainly would not come out a happy person and chose to be realistic about the reality of how that situation would go down so I bitterly responded through a fake smile and said "REALLY? That's ok, I will just head over to beauty brands but thanks anyways." All that to say if you have small children and must go in, bring a stroller, leash, handcuffs, what have you but know that it is your job to contain them, for insurance purposes. :) I have been back since and put my now 2 yr old in the stroller and allowed my now 3 yr old to walk all the while reminding him not touch ANYTHING! I definitely don't make it a habit to go with my younger ones unless it can't wait. The ladies have been much nicer the last few times I have been back so that certainly helps. All in all it is a great store with a wide variety of products for hair, face, body, nails, etc. and don't forget to use your $3.50 off any purchase of $10 or more when you go. You can fund these weekly in the Sunday paper or Red Plum and Smart Source mailers. read more

My mother in law went here to get color matched for a product and instead of helping her they were rude and told her she wouldn't be able to use it. I have been going to Shelby to get my hair done for a couple months now! She is fantastic! The conversation is easy and fun, the time passes by so fast! Conversation is important to me when getting your hair done since you're sitting in the chair for so long! I will continue to go here, they are easy to schedule with and the entire staff is friendly! This place is ok. It seems like once I come in here and someone asks you do you need help and you state, "No," you leave them alone. This place has a bad habit of following you around. Maybe it's because it's the Overland Park location so they automatically assume the crowd is mostly young and steals, but I frequent this store more often then not and I find it funny that I remember each one of them but they can't seem to remember me. There is rarely enough cashier assistance at this store and most of the time their inventory is low to non-existent. I went to the store on Sunday, March 17th, to purchase some more Clinique foundation and picked up a couple of other things. There were plenty of store employees on the floor, but only one cashier was available. The line was almost back to the front door. I asked someone on the floor if they could get someone else on the registers to help and she said they didn't have anyone else to work the registers. Seemed odd because 3 of them were on the floor talking. I gave my stuff to the young lady on the floor and walked out. This is a common occurrence at this store. The good thing about this store? Matt who works in the Clinique area. He is the only reason we visit this store. I do like their perks, but again inventory and cashier assistance are common problems at this store. read more

I am honestly, obsessed with makeup. I like getting different colors or trying out different brands. Sephora is great, but I'm not wanting a fifteen minute drive to pick up a new concealer. Recently, a new Ulta was opened up on 135th and Nall which had fantastic service compared to this location. I don't think I have ever gone into this store without someone giving me attitude. I get it. Work sucks. We all have been there, but it is bad customer service to gripe at the customer. The last time I went in, a woman was complaining to her coworker about her boyfriend, really loud. I was across the store and could still hear her. Good reward system, fair prices, just horrible service. Go to Sephore or the new Ulta. read more

Went in to get some sort of contour kit and left with an awesome bronzer and highlight palette instead thanks to Blaine! He knew just what I needed and didn't try to up sale me anything ridiculous and expensive. He was also very nice and welcoming. The past couple times I've been in it would take along time for anyone to notice if I needed help, but he greeted me and asked me if I needed anything within a minute of being there. While I appreciate the employees offering to help me find product I DO NOT appreciate being hovered over after declining the employee's help as if I was going steal for them. I feel like a target everytime I come to THIS store, it makes me sick. There is one man that works there that pushes and pushes to sell products to the point where he will get way too feisty. I was with a super sweet gal who was matching me for a foundation, she grabbed a brush and he butts in out of no where and tells her "oh no no, use THAT brush and points to a different one" why did he have her use the other brush? because it was an expensive IT brush. Then when I said how wonderful the foundation looked he said " well its because of the brush".... so you are telling me that the foundation wont look this way unless I get the brush too... wow thank you... you really are a salesman, BRAVO! So, of course, I was disappointed, he wanted me to spend 60+ dollars for the foundation and the brush when all I wanted was a nice looking foundation. Then he proceeded to argue with me about how he just wanted to bring out my potential beauty when i confronted him on why he pulled the brush trick. Be honest dude... NEXT: I was looking for a curling iron when a lady approaches me and asks if I need help. THEN she asked... "do you have rosacea?!" I said no, i am red because i am hot and just had surgery, my body is still in recovery. "oh no dear THAT kind of redness is hereditary, i have a product that will get rid of that" I HAVE ROSACEA?! are you kidding me? How unbelievably rude, its bad enough so many like myself suffer from insecurities but to try to add another one on top of me, how disgusting. all so she can push her product on me. I swear these associates are trained to prey on people who appear weak, and boy it really shows. Thanks so much ulta I now feel terrified to enter your store because your associate made me feel absolutely horrible and disgusting. And for the record, the terrible smelling " fragrance-free" crap she put on my face DIDNT help and left a horrible residue on my face that turned into a slimy substance when i talked out to my car. The overland park store tends to leave me alone and doesnt pick out my flaws with a fine tooth comb and make me feel bad about them. I have ran into some nice associates at the olathe ulta, but the pushing of products needs to end and the unprofessional suggestive diagnosis' of one's appearance in the process is NOT acceptable. I have always loved ulta but a while back I visited the south Olathe location and felt as though I was being followed by the associates at the store. When I reached the register to pay for the items I picked up, I opened a brush that my daughter had picked out after the women at the front desk had scanned it. The women then asked me if I had planned on paying for it. I then informed her that she had already scanned the item. I payed for my things but as I made my way to the car I felt very uneasy about my experience. I then called the store and let the manager know that while I was at her location I felt as though I had been racially profiled at her at store. She made quite a few excuses but did end up apologizing and said she would make sure nothing like that happened again. To be honest I don't know I if they have made any progress because I will not spend my hard earned money at an establishment that dehumanizes me while I'm spending it. read more

I came here recommended by a couple friends after a hair dye job gone wrong (ashy grayish-green tinted brown hair from having hair dyed from platinum blonde to neutral brown), and I was so impressed by the experience! Initially I was scheduled for a consult at the salon where I was able to discuss my thoughts with the stylist (Alyssa) to figure out a solution and estimate cost. I had been wanting some highlights for more body for a while too, so we settled on a dark blonde with partial balayage highlights. The whole process took about 2.5 hours and the results were amazing-I was so impressed with Alyssa throughout the appointment, she was the perfect person for the job! I was so lucky to have her as she was able to do exactly what I wanted, and my hair feels even healthier after the appointment. She was also able to give me some great tips and suggestions for styling my hair and products to use to maintain it. I will definitely be requesting her from now on, and going to Ulta for my beauty needs. 10/10 would recommend for anyone! read more

Unfortunately, I was very disappointed in how I was treated yesterday at Ulta. Let me preface this by saying that as a busy mom of five, I never have time to myself. I haven't had a haircut in over two years. I made an appointment at this salon in Olathe (even though I live in a different city) because I had no idea where to go, and my sister goes here regularly and is always happy with her hair. Even though the price was over twice as much as I'm used to paying, my husband and I decided it was worth it since this only happens once every several years. Unfortunately, we got a little lost (my mom and I) trying to find the salon, so I was about five minutes late. I walked in at 4:20 for my 4:15 appointment. There was a lady in front of me paying, so I waited in line behind her. About a minute later, a woman sees me and asks me if I have an appointment. I tell her yes and give her my name. She looks me up and gives me a look, and tells me she'll tell my stylist that I'm here. I wait for a couple minutes, striking up a conversation with a couple other ladies in the meantime. A minute or two later, she comes out, tells me that because I'm "pretty much" ten minutes late to my appointment, I can't be seen today. She told me she could reschedule me, but I told her I didn't live here so that wouldn't work. I probably should have fought my case a little, but I was so caught off guard and embarrassed (she was saying all of this very loudly as there were a lot of people around), I just wanted to get out of there as soon as possible. I talked to my sister who goes here regularly, who tells me she usually has to wait ten or so minutes after her scheduled appointment time to be called back. And I wasn't ten minutes late, I was five minutes late. By the time she told me I couldn't be seen, it had been about eight minutes, but that's because she was in the back getting my stylist. I will not be returning, and my sister will also be finding a new place to get her hair done. I'm sure they are great at what they do, but I was not treated well as a customer. My other sister got her hair done yesterday at Beauty Brands, and I booked an appointment there for almost $25 cheaper, and I feel much more confident they will treat me better. read more

Ulta may have great products, but I can't say the same about the staff. I was in there for 30 MINUTES this monday around 7:30 pm, no one greeted me as I walked in, nor did anyone ask how I was doing as I moved from every isle. I understand that work can get busy and sometimes it's hard to keep up with EVERY customers, but this wasn't the situation. There were barely any customers in there. There was a worker who was helping a customer next to me, but she completely ignored and walked past me! Doesn't EVERY person in the store deserve equal customer service? The rest of the workers thought it would be more important to talk to each other than me, even though I was only two feet away, it really wouldn't have taken much for them to just ask if I was finding everything alright. And last but not least, there was a male worker at the register next to the door, and another worker right behind me, neither of them even bothered to thank me for coming in and they went on to talk to each other. Maybe the situation would have been different if I looked older and more mature? or if I carried a designer handbag and LOOKED like I had a lot of money? I may have looked like a little girl window shopping, but I'm twenty years old with three jobs. I had just finished a nine hour shift where I had to constantly smile at every person and make sure they were having a nice experience in my store, there is NO excuse for not getting that same courtesy when it was my turn to be a customer. So in spite of how I may have looked to the workers, they really did lose a potential good sale. But that's not my point, EVERYONE regardless of how they look, deserves to feel welcomed in a store whether they buy something or not! It's not fair to prejudge and only help customers who look like they'll spend money and ignore the people who don't. Even if Ulta has a wide variety of great products, I would never waste my money for workers that couldn't even spare a minute to greet a customer. read more

I went to this salon yesterday and my haircut was poorly done, and unfortunately my scalp was burned due to the dye not being put on carefully and properly. I still have burning hours later. Fortunately, Jodi the manager was very kind and refunded my money due to the fact I had to wash my hair multiple times afterwards, and she even gave me complimentary products to soothe the burn on my scalp. Apparently, their evening manager(with nose ring) will not honor an even exchange for same product(by same company) but another Ulta store did, and now I will go the extra mile to go the other store who appreciates my business. I bought some shampoo & Conditioner(at their annual sale $14.99)when I realized the color care was for silver hair, so I thought I could go back and just exchange it for the right color care of the same brand at the Ulta store by my house(instead of the store where I bought it).Wrong! I never used it, you can tell by looking at it but she wanted to charge me $10 more dollars to exchange it. I told her at the other story it was all the same price she said she would not honor an even exchange, I told she to give it back & I will go to the store I bought it at, she could careless, so I did! The Ulta store I bought it at gave me the exchange & didn't charge me any more money. It was a mistake & they honored it. They have earned my business from now on, fair well rude Olathe store. read more

This store is the best store in the area! I recently went to the store for one of their events where Bare Minerals was giving makeovers. The store is always clean and the associates especially on the prestige side are wonderful!!! I'm glad that the last comment was a makeup artist from the event I went to. I am a frequent customer and the associates were talking about the bare event for weeks! It was a fun event but the makeup artists that bare minerals provided were the worst. The artist that comment before was sooooo unprofessional. Sarah never smiled and never looked like she wanted to be there. She also did my friends makeup and it looked horrible. She needs to stay in St. Louis for bares next event and just focus on her customer service and makeup skills. She was even wearing a sheer top where the purpose was to see her bra. It's hilarious to me that she doesn't think that the store tried when all the bare makeup artists were just standing and talking to other artists and not the customers in the store. Ulta associates that were working the event were very good and I'll be bringing myself and my friends back in the future. All events that Ulta host are mostly positive and everyone should always try to attend! read more
