For western bound, take exit 32 toward Bell Blvd. At the traffic light, turn right. This parcel was acquired in Septmber 1950. The plan was to develope the shoreline area. However, it didn't carry out due to the Throgs Neck Bridge construction and the fiscal crisis of the 1970s. And Parks renamed the property's present name in 1973, from Clearview Park. Bayside, originally inhabited by the Matinecock tribe, was granted to William Lawrence by King Charles I in 1644, spurring European settlement. It became part of Queens County in 1683. Most early records were lost in an 1780s fire linked to arson. During the Revolutionary War, Bayside supported the British and faced two failed Patriot raids. The arrival of the North Shore Railroad in 1866 brought rapid growth, attracting wealthy New Yorkers and actors. After the film industry moved to California in the 1920s, Bayside's economy relied on the Little Neck shellfish beds.

Now as an almost middle aged adult in an attempt to weather through almost triple digit weather, Astoria Pool hasn't lost its charm. As good as the trip was, it isn't perfect. Since it was a hot day there was a rather long queue that I had to wait through, which fortunately wasn't as long as I thought it would be. There are a couple of rules and regulations which do make enough sense to follow. No electronics in the pool area, you must have a lock for your locker and shower before and after being in the pool, a towel is recommended. The one drawback would be the locker rooms. I dunno how the women's one looks like since I'm a man but the men's locker leaves a lot to be desired. I know it's a public use facility but it could be more taken care of so it would look less like a Gulag from Call of Duty: Warzone, plus the lockers are pretty small, I was amazed to fit all of my stuff in there. Other than that, it's a nice way to kill some time on a hot day. Be mindful of their schedule though because an hour break is utilized from 3 to 4 PM.

The locker room is huge and has plenty of lockers, showers and dressing stalls to change into. The pool is Olympic size and gargantuan with an amazing view of the bridge. The best part is the way it's divided. There's a section with lanes for swimmers who want to do laps. A tanning section, away from the pool where you can lay out towels and tan or read a book. Areas designated for food consumption as they do have a food stand that sells burgers, hot dogs etc. all at reasonable prices from $6-$14. A playground right next door with sprinklers and jungle gym. And if you don't want to get into the water but enjoy the view there's a terrace outside of the pool that owns you to see over the pool and bridge.

This is a *public* pool with people of all ages and abilities. The majority of the pool-goers are very respectful and stay out of each other's way. Some run, do calisthenics, stretch, or just float. Who cares? There are a plenty of swimming lanes, some designated for slow-paced swimmers. My one-and-only complaint: The locker rooms. Terribly designed. It is so cramped and uncomfortable. I wish they were more like the open locker-room design of the rec center across the street. Other than that, I am thankful to have this facility.

Oakland lake has a 0.6 mi circular loop and is perfect for a nightly stroll(during the summer months). There are also multiple bench chairs for passerby's to sit at and just take in the fresh air. Oakland lake is also surprisingly close to the alley pond park. To get here, just take the Q12 to the Burger King on Northern Blvd and walk a block south.

The 0.6-mile path around Oakland Lake is peaceful and relaxing. I always look forward to seeing the beautiful swan, and today I also spotted two baby ducks. I was a little disappointed not to see the huge turtle I saw on a previous visit, but that's nature! Watch out for mosquitoes around dusk. The city could do a better job cutting the overgrown grass, but it's still one of my favorite neighborhood walks.

I am also so happy that Wheeler park welcomes everyone from all over NJ (and elsewhere). Coming from out of the county will cost you a bit more, but not much. If you live outside of Union County it is $4.00 for kids ($2.00 in county) and $6.00 for adults ($3.00 in county). This splash pad has every water feature a kid could ever need - from bigger twisty water slides, to a small dragon water slide. Also, water guns that you can shoot each other with, a pirate boat, water shooting up from the ground, and much more. My kids spent a little over 2 hours here and had an absolute blast. We've been here about 3 times and it never disappoints. Just be sure to bring some sort of shade covering. There isn't much cover at the splash pad so we usually bring our small beach tent with us. There is also a dry playground in the splash pad gated area where kids can play too. They have staff who help keep the kids safe and to make sure everyone goes down the water slides safe and sound. I highly recommend Wheeler Spray Park on a hot summer day.
