I have been attending classes, on and off, since july 2019. I'm an amateur that is taking boxing classes just to stay in shape. Jalel, boxing instructor, has always made me feel welcome, I've never felt singled out or ashamed of missing weeks, sometimes months, at a time. Whether you are a professional or just trying to get in shape, Jalel will always make sure you get some of his time and knowledge that fits your level. The class attendees themselves have always been smiling and full of life, again reinforcing the welcoming feeling, much like the rest of the team that works there. Which I think is HUGE for those with self confidence, or weight issues. It's an odd feeling for someone that has those issues. You are your worst enemy, you feel bad in your own skin when you walk into ANY gym. Yet at Ultimate Boxing, you feel like they see through the outside and look at you as a peer. Always respecting. A family member had a membership here for several months, and the classes he attended with Olivia were good. However, a number of months ago, this business closed their location and claimed to move to another location. He went to this supposed new location at the claimed new address but there is no fight gym in this shopping center. My family member wanted to cancel his membership since the business doesn't exist anymore. So he called to cancel his membership and Xavier told him to email Heather to cancel it. He emailed Heather multiple times to cancel it, and there was never a response. He went back to the claimed new address again to talk to someone in person, but there still was no such business in this shopping center. He continued to be charged monthly for a membership. His membership was always month-to-month by the way, which was set up by Heather and approved by Mike, the owner, who were both present in person when my family member signed up. This business that is apparently not in business anymore continued charging him, and he ultimately lost several hundred dollars. read more

I had inquired about sparring and training, the trainer and the gym has its own way of operating, allowing the fighters to get heated and not doing anything about the intensity. I had sparred many individuals but it seemed like only a couple were considerate of the nature of actually hurting someone. I had individuals kick at the knees with power and some commit to flying knees when they got frustrated. I ended up leaving earlier than the full class schedule because having two different fighters not knowing control decided to get frustrated and try to hurt their partner. As someone who provides for his family, and who knows control in the ring, the same respect wasn't shown from my sparring partners. In the end it's partially the fighters, but it falls on the coaches to maintain a safe environment for those wanting to train effectively and safely. Anyone can throw power, but ego fighting is the stance at this gym. read more

You are correct.. the new reality that we are dealing with right now is not something we thought about when we signed up, BUT we've already made three months of concessions. We continued to support your business with no services for 90 days for kids classes. You may have started classes back up but the numbers are now escalating. 590 new cases yesterday. There was no compromise with you. I said this offer did not work for us and you immediately brought up collections. I feel you were upset at "my refusal" to do what YOU wanted me to do. No way in hell have you gone out of your way for me, it's actually the opposite. I have gone out of my way to pay for three months of no services, I have gone out of my way to cancel my contract, and I will probably continue to go out of my way until this matter is resolved. WE have been more than accommodating at trying to honor our end of the contract. There comes a time though that contracts can and will be broken. ******************** We signed our son up to take classes at the beginning of the 2020 year. Little did we know what the year had in store for us. Mid March things started shutting down due to the pandemic. UCTC did offer online classes eventually.. but that is not what we signed up for and not everyone has the ability to participate in online classes. We wanted to support this local business so we continued to make payments to UCTC even though services were not being rendered. Fast forward 3 1/2 months later when Covid numbers are on the rise, we ask to cancel our contract. At this time we have been paying these guys for the past 3 1/2 because we wanted to support them. I called and the young lady gave me an e-mail address where I could request my contract be canceled. I sent an e-mail asking that my contract be canceled as we are not comfortable at this time sending our child in due to the rise in cases. The response was that we could pause the membership for a few months and revisit it. I replied that unfortunately this does not work for us at this time. Please let me know what I need to do to cancel my contract and that I no longer allow them to charge my credit card. The response I received from Mike, who is the gentleman I have been talking to the whole time, said "We are not canceling any memberships as we have re-opened for business and that my account will be sent to a collection company". Mind you they have re-opened when Covid cases are at their highest and I am not comfortable with my child attending. We don't even know if our kids are going back to school next year right now... but this guy wants me to keep paying for a service where he can't even ensure the safety of my child?? I know I can cancel the contract. I know contract law, and for him to tell me that he will not cancel my contract is unbelievable to me. Not one time did he even ask us what our situation was. He only stated the ways that the contract protects him. I feel like we have been more than reasonable. We have been paying him for no services for the past 3 1/2 months because we wanted to support his business. For him to try and strong arm us is completely unacceptable!! This place is run horribly, and the owner is a complete misogynistic asshole. I originally wanted to try this place out for the boxing, so I texted the number they gave to sign up for a free class. I was told to be there at 8 am on a Saturday for boxing. When I got there no one was there until some lady showed up 10 minutes after 8 to inform me and a few others that they were closed due to an event going on. I then proceeded to tell her how I was told to be there, and she knew nothing of the sort. She then told me and the other gentleman there that she could try to run a boxing class. I was okay with this, as I know things happen. However, I feel as though I was sold short on having this be considered my "free trial class". After that, I was sold a 10-pack class for $50. I then went one time after this to learn that this place is not great for beginner boxers. Many people who go here and competitive, and the demographic is male. I wanted to get a refund on the pack I bought due to being misled as to what this place was like by the lady who sold me the pack of classes. So I politely emailed the owner, asking for a refund. He then told me I had a deal(which I was unaware of), and I was not going to get a refund. So I emailed back to explain my situation when I was sold the pack of classes. He never responded so I made the mistake of calling. When I called the owner laughed in my face and made me feel "like a dumb girl" after I had been completely nice and understanding up until this point. He said that asking for a refund for classes wasn't going to happen, and it was I quote "common sense" on why I wouldn't. Nothing about what I was asking was a "stupid question", the owner is just an asshole who tries to rip people off and be as condescending as possible. Also, I am someone who works a customer service job, so I know this is the completely wrong way to speak to a paying customer. He also said that class packs of 10 usually are $180. So I feel bad for anyone who has been ripped off by them when they have a pack of 10 being sold for $50 by select people. At this point, I don't even care if I'm refunded for the classes, but the way I was treated via email and phone should be enough of a reason for a refund. read more

I've only been a few times for Muay Thai (and hopefully more) so maybe I can't give the best representation, but I have been satisfied with this gym! It teaches varied classes such as self defense and other martial arts. What sets it apart is the staff's know-how, they seem to know their discipline and rub a little of their style off on you as they teach. They are constructive and the atmosphere is friendly, as are those who attend their classes. There are always new attendees and a variety of people who come, so you never feel out of place. The facility itself is adequate, you've got all the things you need to store your stuff, change, etc. although it's a tad bit barebones with the front desk and such. read more

I'm a little confused why there are many negative reviews about this place. Granted, I'm not involved in the membership politics of UCTC as I'm mainly going via Class Pass, but I really enjoy all the classes I've taken here, and the teachers are super friendly. The only classes I have taken here are the kickboxing ones - and I love them. I have taken classes with Matt, AJ, Shae, and Jessica, and they've all been fun - with different varieties per teacher. The class is titled Fitness Kickboxing for a reason - you're going to work your ass. For about the first 20-30 minutes of class, it's an intense warm up - running, jogging, sit ups, burpees, froggies, push ups, all the things. From there, the bags come out and you're onto working on combos given by the teachers. Some teachers end with partner work on the bag, others end with time for free-style combos. It's so much fun, and you will sweat A TON. Every kickboxing class is done barefooted, which at first, I was a little concerned about. But they have a very nicely padded ground, and it feels good on your feet. Usually, for my foot support, I'll come with my arches taped, and that makes me feel even better. These classes have become my favorite, and I've very deeply considered getting a membership. Teachers will make sure to walk around during class to help with form, compliment your work, root for you as you go, and to be there for support. At the end of each class, if there is a new student, the teacher will make sure to announce it so everyone can clap for them. It's just a great set up for class, and support in your training process. You can tell there is a huge supportive community at UCTC. There is a large blackboard in the room where you take kickboxing, with names all over it, their "scores" from heart rate monitor tracking, upcoming events, announcements etc. People know each other fairly well in classes, and it's just an overall good setting. They have at least two other rooms for additional classes, and a upstairs area where you can store your stuff (I haven't explored much). Make sure when you start at UCTC, look into their Groupon deals or online deals. You can get great prices for classes AND gloves. Otherwise, you'll have to buy gloves outright if you're coming in for drop-in. read more

I came here on a Class Pass and though I had a good time, it was absolutely not what I expected. I wish I had a bit more warning before signing up. When I signed up for Jiu Jitsu Fundamentals, I thought it would be like any other workout class I go to, but with a Jiu Jitsu twist. My first cue that I was wrong was when they had me wear a "gi" -- the traditional uniform. The class "warm up" then started where we each were supposed to take turns fighting one girl and "take her down." Needless to say, I was very panicked. The teacher didn't seem to have any regard for the fact that it was my first class and had no experience. Luckily, I didn't end up having to do it, but then I had to "grapple" with someone in the class. I had no idea what I was doing so I got repeatedly thrown to the ground. Turns out everyone else in the class goes to the studio basically every day. Subsequently the class wasn't very "fundamental." The second half of the class got much less stressful, when we worked on techniques. We practiced getting out of holds. That part was actually quite fun and I began to see why people enjoy it. After the class everyone was very kind and welcoming. If only they had been that way before the class... Then the whole experience might not have been as stressful. I would consider going back, but unfortunately it hurt my shoulder so it won't be anytime soon. I am giving it 4/5 mainly because of the lack of information. I think that if they are going to offer the class via Class Pass, they need a little more information on the description. Update & Response: Sir, in our last correspondence I requested a copy of the contract so that I may know the exact language regarding your responsibilities to your patrons but you did not reply, so you can save your fake helpfulness unless you're actually letting me out of my contract. DON'T SIGN A CONTRACT!!! They did freeze my membership for 2 months for Covid, so thanks, I guess. But they are now back to charging me for a version of service I did not sign up for because I didn't have a crystal ball predicting a global pandemic. The owner Mike refuses to let me out of their contract and has been a complete bully, I hope there is ultimately justice for the people he's been stealing from. I'm a disabled 5'3 female military veteran on a fixed income and this guy was still coming at me like I was challenging him to a throw down just because I was asking to be let out of my contract. I wanted to give myself a full month of coming to this gym before giving it a thorough review. Before coming to this gym, I've noticed that the majority of the negative reviews have been about the membership pricing and the contracts people signed. I will address that but I think the more important part of this review is actually how the classes are and how well they are. I've only been doing BJJ and Muay Thai so here we go. BJJ: I did not come in with experience in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. However, the staff were welcoming and also the more advanced students are very kind and helpful as well. It takes a good three months for things to start sticking and to start being able to use the techniques in a productive way. So I am taking classes almost everyday or 3 times a week to be able to actually learn it. The BJJ classes here are the No Gi and Gi class. The instructors are knowledgeable as well. They are happy to show you how to correctly do the technique. I also like the fact that the latest class for BJJ is at 8, so people getting off work late or whatever can come in and get some grappling in. The majority of the BJJ students are male, and it is a male dominated martial art, but don't let that intimidate you from doing this, because it is very fun and rewarding. Muay Thai: So I do have experience in Muay Thai from Easton in Denver. I've only done Muay Thai for two years at Easton so my critique of Ultimates program is going to align with how Easton is run. Personally, I think Ultimates Muay Thai program and the way that it is ran could improve. I think that they should separate the newer people into a beginners Muay Thai/kickboxing class like Easton does, that way we can avoid injuries and improper form. I noticed that in Ultimates Muay Thai classes, the beginners or newer people struggle with holding the Thai pads which can be dangerous. Also I think it's a good foundation, if there were a beginners class, that the newer people can learn hot to kick and punch properly. I notice some people still don't kick or punch properly so i would love to just have more opportunities and workshops to fix those things. Even after two years I struggle with those things. At Easton, they incorporated a lot of Muay Thai in their kickboxing programs, and then once students felt good then they moved onto Muay Thai. I also took their sparring class, and it was okay, however I did not know the level of difficulty and intensity people were going for and I found out quick that this was an intense sparring session. I would love for them to perhaps introduce a tech sparring course to ease people into sparring all out because again, I think it can pose a danger for someone who is under trained. I am being bias here but I would love for them to adopt Easton's training program but that's just me! Lol Membership: I was properly explained about the membership and pricing by the manager and understood what I was getting into. I think a lot of the misconceptions come from miscommunication and lack of speaking up when there is an issue. You sign a contract, so make sure to read it carefully. I know gyms in general have a bad reputation because of sketchy contracts but I didn't see that happening at this gym. The pricing is also pretty reasonable for a martial arts gym, and they offer a lot of classes. Obviously it is cheaper if you do the 12 month contract, they want to lock you in so your a member for life kind of deal. Overall, the gym is great. It's family oriented, people are friendly, and the atmosphere is fun and friendly. They also recently expanded their space so there's a lot more room to play. read more

And when my contract was finally up I would assume after all the emails sent they would automatically cancel the membership. But to my surprise I have to send them another to automatically cancel! So I did that and didn't even get a response until they charged me again and then sent me an email a couple days later saying that they ended automatic billing. read more

He said you're not listening to me but offered to credit the cost I paid for the deal and not the deal itself out of the goodness in his heart. I agree with the other yelp user. This guys is an ass and provides poor service. If you don't want to honor the LS deal then don't sign up for it to begin with. Since then I've watched the company grow and expand to include so much more then the original Shintoshi Karate they used to teach. I wasn't really sure what I was getting myself into when I signed up for a membership at UCTC. I was looking for a new workout after being a collegiate swimmer and knew that I don't do so well if there's no one telling me what to do. I ended up getting my butt handed to me during my first class with AJ and I loved it. I was sore for about a week, but I went back 2 days later and still had fun. Since joining in June I've gotten to know a few of the gym members and trainers pretty well and honestly if it wasn't for the awesome people and the relationships I've developed with them, I probably wouldn't be able to justify spending money on a membership since I'm on a grad student budget. The workouts are awesome and I always have something new to work on (it's that competitor in me!) or a little thing to practice at home that keeps me coming back. Shout outs to Mike, Matt, AJ, Krehl and Todd for making UCTC one of my favorite places to spend time and for having my back as a newcomer and student in Salt Lake. I moved in to Salt Lake recently with my wife from Kuwait. I usually am a very active person and love working out. I drove past the gym one day and decided to give it a try. Next thing was I got a years membership and I have absolutely ZERO regrets. The trainers are awesome. The classes are so much fun, and each trainer will push you to your ultimate best. I am starting to notice a great difference and most importantly I feel so healthy. Everyone is very friendly, supportive and awesome. I got to know all the trainers and tried all of their classes. They are all awesome. I highly recommend it to everyone who wants to get in shape, meet amazing people and have fun along the way and get shredded. Its a great place to meet new friends too. I have trained Brazilian jiu jitsu and Muay Thai for 10 years respectively and this is the first major issue I have had with a gym throughout the entire United States. I came in for a trail period (3 days) back in October of 2018 . I signed a liability waiver and gave them billing information asking them not to put it through as I was new to SLC and would be checking into more martial arts gyms (my mistake). After looking around I decided to go with a GRACIE jiu jitsu gym in the area. I never returned after my 3 day trail period. In February of 2019 (roughly 4 months after the end of my trail) I started seeing charges for $125 on my account. I called Matthew, at the front desk and talked to him. He remembered me and assured me he could do nothing for me as they outsource all their billing. I contacted their billing company, (which has one star with the better business bureau) they assured me that Matthew had explained that I was roped into a year long contract and that there was no way out of it and Matthew was "one of their best salesman and surely explained everthing". Makes no sense, I knew I would only be in salt lake for 6 months, and why would they start billing me 4 months after my 3 day trial? Do yourself a favor and go to Carlson gracie in Murphy, unified jiu jitsu or, or Gracie jiu jitsu In Sugarhouse. read more

Last year, after 4 painful deaths in the family, failing a professional exam, and weight gain from the grief eating, I started going to UCTC. The staff is so friendly and motivating and unknowingly have helped me out of depression. My self-esteem is lifted, I've lost the weight and now have the confidence to wear tank tops and short shorts again. I am actually excited to put on a bathing suit!
