I'm a little torn about writing this review. I do enjoy going to this club, but their are a few things that I dislike. I'll start off with the good first. I enjoy going here to dance and have a few drinks. The crowd is very diverse and you can meet a lot of different people. Drink cost about the average price for the DC area. There are some nights that are not crazy busy which makes it easier to move around the club. The music is pretty good, and they have different DJs on each floor that play different music. Also the bouncers keep an eye out for people under 21 trying to drink. Listen, if you're underage and drinking in this business, don't get upset at them for kicking you out because you broke the law and got caught. Now the bad. First, UltraBar can get very busy and you pretty much are the entire time you are there. If you don't get there before 11 you'll probably be waiting outside in line for a while. I feel like the management makes people wait in line to build up to draw attention to them and make it seem like the club is poppin'. If you want to get a drink it might take you a minute depending on what floor you're on. Overall I would recommend trying this club. read more

UlraBar sets the standard for ratchet clubs in DC. I went because I heard about the 4 floors and thought it sounded fun, but I was definitely wrong... Each floor is basically the same cramped room except they play different music (hip hop, top 40, R&B, reggae). Employees pushed people out of the way because the floors were so cramped. Multiple fights broke out and security didn't do jack. Drinks are obviously watered down. The people who go here are a either tools or flat out ghetto. To sum it up, DO NOT GO HERE unless you like sketchy places with sketchy people! read more

Ok...so here's the skinny on Ultrabar. good location and easy to find. Me and girls went there one night and found it easy to find parking...however we waited for about ten min. Not too bad of a wait but I would have suspected that more so in clubs in Chicago and not DC. But I digress... The inside is simple, modern, and trendy with several different levels, each with their own type of music. The top floor-rap (hardcore rap too... I love rap but this was stuff I didn't even know). The Main floor was house/trance..or what some urbanites call Techno (hate that word). The music was good, songs were familiar, and half naked dancers pranced around on boxes making for interesting conversation. The lower level is the latina/ reggae-ton music. that was pretty fun and highly underrated in my opinion. it was laid back and everyone on the lower floor appeared to be having a good time. The positive aspect to this is that you can kinda mix up your repertoire of music if you just don't know what your in the mood for on that particular night. The not so good aspects to this is the extreme crowd difference in each room. The drinks were made well. I am strictly a Goose and tonic with lime kinda gal, which tend to be pricey, but quite frankly if you are in any club or lounge in any major city you are going to pay for your drinks and if your so worried about it...may I suggest sticking to your local watering hole. As for the age/type of peeps in this club....it varied so much I can't even pinpoint what type of crowd this place brought in. definitely a slightly younger crowd, but not obnoxious in my opinion...well there were some but it was minimal. So all in all I'd go again, given I was with the right type of people and in the right kind of mood... read more

We waited in line for an hour before finding out that there are actually two lines: one for credit cards and a (much shorter) line for cash. Kind of seemed like a way to get more people in after midnight so that they could charge, but I won't jump to conclusions. Heads up that a $30 minimum is required to pay with card at the bar. Overall it was an *okay* but somewhat dirty club. Being in my mid twenties, I was not a fan of the young and trashy clientele this club attracts. Probably wouldn't go back. Unless you are under 21, there are way better clubs in DC to go to. read more

I went with a buddy from San Fran on October 30th for Steve Angello and Sebastian Ingrosso of the Swedish House Mafia. Our reaction: this place's right hand doesn't know what the left is doing. Not so great: * The ground floor is poorly laid out. The dance floor should not be a main avenue to get anywhere else in the bar. We were getting shoved around by people having to walk though the crowd all night. * The coat check that night was all the way at the back end of the bar in the basement... so you have to push your way through the dance floor to get there. * The DJ booth was not a respectable DJ booth for a bar this sized devoted to dance music. They did have the requisite equipment (CDJ-1000MK3's and a Pioneer DJM-600 or -800 mixer), but the monitor speakers were on stands to either side of the booth. They should at least be flown from above the booth in this instance so they don't obstruct the view. Also, the DJ booth should have a table back there for the DJ's entourage. I think there was duct work obstructing view of the DJ booth, too. * Cover was a little too high ($15, and I was on a guest list!) and drinks were absurd at $10 for a Bacardi and Coke. I didn't drink. * The sound needs to be EQ'd for the room a bit better. Highs were overbearing and distorting. * The really old guys in shiny shirts on the prowl. * The "line" system in front of the bar. Better than previously listed: * Those lasers! I freaking want those! * The rest of the lighting setup. * All the good looking college kids. Though I'm not *that* old, I still feel a little bit skeevy, though, because those kids had black X's on their hands. * The mostly confusingly empty "Eurotrash Deck" at the balcony bar overlooking the ground floor. One Eurotrash guy was sporting a Euromullet. * People actually came out for the music, unlike many places I've been to in DC. * There were smaller hip hop rooms on other floors. Though I don't care for hip hop and top 40, I like this, because it get's those "listeners" out of the zones where the music matters. I've certainly experienced worse in DC. I guess I'd go back here again for a good DJ. District Ignition and the Snatch parties seem to bring some good DJs through. read more

First and last time clubbing here. I never ever go to clubs, not my scene, but came out just because my friends wanted to go since we were in the area. The bouncers were so rude. Most of the guys that come here are creepers. Just no. I saw multiple people throw up, and the person who cleans it up just puts down paper towels. No sanitation or anything. It felt like leg day walking up and down the stairs. I do not know a lot about clubs, but I do know this one is horrible. read more

I am positive I was purposely overcharged by a female bartender on Saturday night. I was there for a bachelorette party and I asked the bartender in the Chrome Lounge for a glass of water for the bride-to-be after we had just purchased drinks, as my friend was not feeling well. She told me she could not give me a bottle of water and I would have to purchase one for $4. As one can imagine, I was a little incredulous that a bar would rather someone was sick and possibly have alcohol poisoning than provide her with a glass of water! I distinctively wrote $4.00 on my credit card receipt and there is no way after my discussion with the bartender that she could have even thought I'd tip her--let alone tip her $4 on the water. She should be fired--this is fraud and I wonder how many times she has done it before. read more

The drinks I had were pretty good, and the music was dance-able. However -- I won't be going back to Ultrabar. Perfect example of a downtown club that has a huge line just for the sake of having a line. My floor was EMPTY when I left, and I walk outside to see tons of people waiting in the cold -- some of them getting patted down TSA style? What?? Long story short, I've lived in DC for 3+ years and have visited my fair share of clubs and bars in Dupont, H Street, Adams Morgan, Capitol Hill, Arlington, and U Street. Last night reminded me why I stay away from downtown. I have NEVER encountered such a rude staff member at a bar/club in any place in DC - or any city. Keep in mind it was early -- maybe 10 pm -- and our floor was fairly empty, some people hanging out at the bar but not really anyone in the open space. One of my friends put her coat behind her legs, up against the bar --- my other friend put her coat + my coat on a seat (multiple tables in the room with not a SINGLE person sitting at them). One of the staff members runs up to us with his flashlight, shines it on both the coat up against the bar and the coats on the seat... he GRABS them, and holds them hostage while he's lecturing us. He got in my face and said, "I want you to listen to me - are you listening? There is ONE PLACE for coats in this club. That place is downstairs at coat check. If i see coats ANYWHERE else, I kick that person out of the bar, and that person is going to be YOU. Understand?" I had planned on staying for quite a few more drinks, but at that point I (and the 4 girls I was with) walked out of there. If we'd been politely asked I would have had no problem, but the in-your-face threats to a 20-something girl were a little overkill, I feel. Another thing that was annoying -- my guy friend wanted to buy me + my friend our last drink - but there is a $25 minimum for a credit card. So I had to step in and pay cash because he had none, and he was on his way out so he didn't want to order more than 2. Also -- they charge you $4 for water. Never in my life have I been to a place that won't give you a glass of water for free (plus a tip, because I appreciate that if I'm a designated driver). There are much better places with friendlier staff, free water, no cover charge, and no ridiculous line. read more

Gotta get on the Guestlist if you don't want to wait in the long line. Don't have to spend alot to have a great night. I would love to give a review of this place but unfortunately I never got in. I was with a group and we had VIP passes and were getting 3 tables. The door guy was like $20 a head. Had to have been some sort of mix up. So one of the promoters came outside to bring us in and my friend was like why were you trying charge us to the door man. The door man got all lippy and then started yelling and told us we weren't welcomed. Here we were getting ready to drop $1200 for tables and he kicks us out... What?? Maybe one of the best clubs in DC, but the steep cover will deter you after your first time. The staff is not friendly and some guys are really creepy but that's a given around downtown. I would come more often if I wasn't charged $20 to be groped. Some nights they supposedly have discounted covers which they will not acknowledge at the door. read more

I came here three years ago and I had a blast. Of course I can't speak about now but I can speak about my experience then. The crowd was diverse and all of the floors play different music. I enjoyed that a lot. I can't recall the price of drinks but I had a couple of Patron shots. I can't recall everything because I was twisted but I had so much fun. The crowd was packed. I would like to say we went on a Saturday. I can't really recall any complaints and we strolled in there pretty late too. Easily the most fun I've had at a club. Went there last Friday for my bachelor party with my buddies. It was nice college atmosphere, music was pretty good. It was nice being in a place where people have to actually dress up! We got a table on the level where you enter. We had a nice elevated view of the floor, the cocktail waitress was cool and we even got a free bottle from one of the managers which was awesome! Went recently for the first time in years to take my cousin out for her 20th. We all remebred this place as the crowded creepy place wed go when we were young cuz options were limited till we turned 21. Always seemed full of mostly middle aged creepy dudes staring at underage girls. However last trip was a lot of fun and a good first club experience . maybe it was dumb luck but perhaps a good sign this place is heading in the right direction. Still more creepers than your average club but not trouble some the last two recent tries. Apparently its being used as a spot for some large 20s 30s meet up. This is definitely one of the places to be in Dc especially on weekends. I've been coming to this place for more than 3 years now. It's all fun and ya a bit crowded. Was here the last weekend with a couple of friends, although was a bit deserted when we reached @10 pm but just with a span of 15 minutes or so,it was all buzzing with crowds. The good thing about UltraBar is all it's bartenders are so talented. Hats off to Yae, she can make you any drink in the world and I can assure you she would never keep you waiting, you order a drink and within a minute you'll have your drink ready and believe me it's no amateur drink it's gonna be a good one. The other thing being the music, since it has 3 floors each one plays different kinds of music and you're definitely going to find something to match your taste. I went there for friday happy hour becuz a friend was throwing an event, but that was the first time i went there in over a year. I hated it the first time. too crowded, too many thirsty dudes and too few ladies. Well I went here for the first time Friday night. We arrived around 10:45 pm and we're given wristbands and shown to our table. It was a huge line, just as many other yelpers forewarned, so I was thankful we didn't have to stand in it. Once inside, it was relatively calm for the first hour. The music was mostly edm and a lot of young, under 21 looking types. Somewhere around 1230 the place became packed and the music improved! I began having fun. I saw more variety in the ages and the entire place was energetic. We left around 2 to head to RoseBar, but overall it wasn't a bad first time there. I like to try new places. Be aware if you have men in your group, they can be very nitpicky with the dress code for guys. I won't be returning here, because It's not the best place for a fun night in the Nation's Capital, but hey, I can scratch them off the list. read more

Mind you this venue has about four floors with a different theme on every floor. Judging by the line outside around 11:3o I just assumed there would be enough space for everyone to comfortably fit inside or else they wouldn't just be letting everyone I'm. Boy was I wrong! We also were told that it was free for women before twelve but because the line moved at snail pace we didn't get in until 12:30. I was determined not to let the $20 cover dampen my spirit. I partied in numerous places around the country and DC is the only city that charges women to get in. Do they not understand nightclub economics? I brushed that off and just accepted that this would be my fate for the night. The dance floor on every floor was tiny and gave me no desire to dance as it felt like you were always in someone's way. The icing on the cake was my $9 simple drink of pineapple and rum that took the bartender forever to make and he even seemed surprised when I tipped him for his subpar customer service. The highlight of my entire night had nothing to do with the actual staff or the venue itself. In fact I met new friends invited us to chill in their VIP. These guys understand nightclub economics. More girls in the VIP means more guys that sounds super simple. Also a fight broke out on the dance floor and I was over the experience by then. I've learned that if I want to have a great nightlife experience I'm going to have to stop holding everyone up to the standards of Liv nightclub. read more

After waiting in line I'm the freezing cold for 30 minutes, the bouncer didn't let me in because I was in sweatpants. However, he allowed numerous women in yoga pants in without a problem. Also, this is an 18+ bar so my friends who were under 21 got in no problem. However, he refused to let these Asian guys in because they were under 21. Smells like racism to me. read more

Ultra Bar for me was really really fun. The music was great and I love the monitors on the wall. Its set up really nice and I also love the diversity of the music. I knew just about all of the songs. I think that Ultra Bar is a good place for people 18-25 it had a really big young crowd. So if your older that, its not the place for you. Its like 2 blocks from the gallery place china town metro station...so walking distance is good...although you should leave the club at 2:30 so you don't miss the last train. And the lines are kind of long so go early!!! read more

Ultra Bar definitely did a great job of maximizing space despite space constraints. It is a very long and narrow club, which when I arrived at 11pm thought poorly of it, but when it got packed after midnight it actually looked really cool, making for a very intimate atmosphere. Was not a fan of the $9 jack & cokes, but I was very impressed by the attitude of the bartenders and security. Everyone appeared to be happy to be there (especially the bartenders, who, whenever they weren't making drinks, were casually rocking back and forth behind the bar). One thing to perhaps reconsider is the extremely steep stairwell in the back of the club. A girl in high heels trying to head downstairs may end up face-planting. Nonetheless, really enjoyed the atmosphere, wonderful sound system, nice layout. read more

The staff, in my experience, has not been notably accommodating, should we have any questions or concerns- we were in line at 10:45, but charged us a cover fee when actually were able to enter at 11:03 (no fee until 11) and were totally unaccommodating. The environment was pretty fun, though I would warn that it can get particularly crowded on weekends, and there tends to be many many men there who enjoy the opportunity to "accidentally" bump into you.. felt like I was constantly on guard from creepy dudes who would spontaneously grab me and my friends, without even making eye contact. Personally, I prefer a little more personal space, and feeling like I can just dance with the girls without worrying who is creeping up behind me. While not directly the staffs fault, I think security has the responsibility to look out for certain guys/ individuals who harass women multiple times, despite clear verbal rejection. read more

Went here for a EDM show. Complaints: Bouncers were retarded. Guy tried to say that even though we bought tickets online for a 10pm show, we needed to stand outside (with no line) for 30 minutes because we were late. Fortunately another bouncer walked up and waved us by. First guy was a jerk though. Bartender added a 20% tip automatically for 5 fireball shots. (11 dollar tip). I protested and adjusted the tip down. Checked the credit card later and it looks like he charged the full amount. Fireball shots tasted watered down. Bathrooms - The only sit down stall was out of order, Sign looked like it had been there a while. Not that I needed it, but for a bar that thinks they're high end, I expect them to maintain bathrooms. Crowd - was pretty dressed down. This place had the attendance and atmosphere of a school disco.... really really not good. A bizarre mix of kids who barely look 18 amongst a group of very uncomfortable 25+ year olds. Bouncers and coat check were nice but staff inside didn't give anyone the time of day. Stupidly high entry fee for 4 levels with exactly the same music (pop music from 2 years ago) lighting and lounge arrangements. The very strict dress code, particularly for guys, is a pain in the neck and extremely ironic for a place of its calibre. Last night I went to UltraBar for the first time ever. I am 21 years old, I went to open buy a drink and the female bartender was very rude right off the bat. I had to open a tab and when I went to close my tab at the end of the night, she took my card didn't swipe it in the machine when she went over and came back to say my card was declined. I talked with the another employee and she lied and said it wouldn't work. The other employee watched her swipe it and it worked. She was extremely unfriendly and I felt attacked because she had the intention of trying to embarrass me. The music was good but the service was very poor. read more

First club I have been to in a while, and I was actually pleasantly surprised. The atmosphere and music was great, as was the bar staff and internal management. The lines outside could use some organization though. Also, I got in without a wait, but Im not sure if I would have been willing to wait in the long lines that form as the night goes on. read more
