Have been coming here for the last 3 years because it's the closest to home, and I don't have a car. At this point, there are more broken machines than working ones, and nobody seems to be fixing them. Also, I have had a large suitcase stolen from here (thankfully empty!) while I was doing my laundry. Right under my nose!! It is difficult to identify who the attendant on duty is. It's often somebody different--seems like they have high turnover. They like to close down the cafe part at random times, go off somewhere for over an hour, and won't say when they will be coming back. Which is unfortunate because the bathroom is always locked & you can only get access with the attendant's help. This latest time, I was only able to identify the attendant because she walked up to me and identified which machines were working and which weren't. I'm really hoping this place gets bought out soon & replaced with all new machines. read more

I honestly have yet to find a laundromat worth anything more than 3 stars. This place is going to be pretty similar to the rest of them. I thought I'd give it a shot after reading some of the reviews, but it's nothing special. The cafe is cute and the seating was very accommodating, but the lady who was working there did not know how to make a chai latte. She apologized before handing it to me because she thought it might be bad as she'd never made one before and she was right :/ it wasn't good at all. She was really nice, but I feel the $3 or $4 I paid was a waste. The laundromat itself isn't the cleanest, but I haven't found one around here that is, so I guess that's not really relevant. Unlike other laundromats that tell you the cost upfront for a wash, these washers tell you how many quarters are required (i.e., a $5 wash will say 20). I wasn't used to that, so it threw me off. And they were actually $5.75 for a medium wash, I think. The dryers were a little worse. They took forever to dry and I even spread my clothes out between two to try and cut down on time, but they both took forever to dry and I feel like I got cheated out of my money because they took a ridiculous amount of time. When my clothes were done, they smelled kind of burnt even though they weren't completely dry? Idk how to explain it :( I don't think I'll be returning here, unfortunately. I feel like for the amount of money I put into their machines, I could have gotten better results at another laundromat. read more

Pretty decent laundry mat. They have a little cafe inside. The dryers look new. It's a little pricey and there was often some homeless people in there although I didn't mind at all. I didn't have a washer or dryer in my apartment on Maple St. so this was super close that I could walk to and get my laundry done. They have a lot of machines so that is good. However there are some bad, one of the workers there (not sure if he works there or he's a homeless man), anyway he's there all the time and his junkie girlfriend comes all the time and they argue like two crazy people pretty sure he's on smack too. Well that kinda creeps me out and the other customers, we kinda look at each other like "what the hell just happened?" The other thing is that some of the machines wash your close and keep them soaked, not like a little wet I'm talking completely soaked. I had to dry my clothes afterward for an hour or more which was pretty ridiculous. Other than that, if you can find the good machines your good to go. It's way more expensive than the washer and dryers that I used when living on the UCSC campus but I had no choice. read more

I've forgiven the fact that several of their machines are consistently broken and their staff is unavailable for the bulk of the day for too long. Today, an entire row of machines was out. No sign, no nothing. They were the only machines available, of course. When someone finally showed up, she tod me she couldn't do any thing about the washers. One of the main reasons I came to this laundromat was because I lived two blocks away. Some of the washers/driers are older but I liked having the option of newer ones too. The good thing about this place is there is a lot of washers and driers to use. I've always been able to load my laundry in this place without having to wait for one to free up. However, sometimes the machines break and they don't always have signs for that. They've eaten my quarters before :( sometimes, there are workers who can help with that but you can't always tell who works there and sometimes they're not even there. There's coin machines here for you to get change and they also sell laundry detergent or drier sheets if you forget. It believe it's a dollar for a small amount. Not sure because I've never used it but I see the machine. This place is an OK neighborhood spot for laundry overall. read more

It is not great, it is not terrible... good coffee and lil snacks.. only 1/6 of the machines are broken..people here leave you alone to your business. The owner is the guy who used to own Wash Rock downtown. Place is clean, plenty of chairs and there is a computer for Internet access. It is right near 7-11 and although parking spaces are limited I have never had a problem. The washers are $2.00 for a thirty min cycle and the dryers are .25 for 7 minutes. read more

The manager, Jorge, at the laundromat is usually very helpful. He showed me which machines were best to use and he even gave me free laundry detergent cause I explained it was my first time at a laundromat. This is a good laundromat to do laundry in as well as do homework. The coffee shop is usually open so you can get coffee or tea. Even though doing laundry is a chore, I find myself getting more things done (laundry and homework). They also have an ATM machine which has been super convenient. read more

I came here with high hopes. I wanted to like it. Sounds great: wifi, coffee and Landry. But they only serve drip, the service is bad, the wifi is so slow you can't use it, no outlets. When I got here the quarter machine was broke. I went to add my soap and there was alright soap in it, so I am crossing my fingers it will even release on my laundry. I have to walk through a puddle now to get to my washing machine because one of the machine flooded out all over the floor. read more

Literally the worst laundromat around. Always closed lately, or closed during random times of the day. And when they are open half the time it seems like the change machine is down or half the machines are down. If it was open more often and reliably I'd give this place at least three stars. I love the Ultramat! We have been using this laundry facility for over ten years now and are very happy. Remember that laundromats are for washing clothes, you can't control the clientele and yes, homeless people need to wash their clothes too. That being said, I feel safe and secure at this facility for a number of reasons: There is usually an attendant on duty which makes me feel comfortable. I come to Ultramat because it's close to my house and reasonably cheap as far as Santa Cruz laundromats go. But the morning attendant on the weekends is awful. He constantly complains about his job, the manager, homeless people, Santa Cruz, the university he's attending, etc. He harasses homeless people that come in and instigates arguments with the customers. It's incredibly unpleasant and makes customers uncomfortable. Dude either needs to find another job or keep his mouth shut. read more

Oh wow... I had looked this up on Yelp mostly just to find out their hours, but wow! I am stunned by some of these reviews, especially by the ones reporting sexual harassment of customers. Responses by the owner to those particular complaints were completely inadequate. I will definitely not be going there now. Who wants to do laundry in a place that isn't safe for women??? The clientele may leave something to be desired, but the actual laundromat is great. There are plenty of washers and dryers, the cost is reasonable, and their high tech dryers do a great job quickly. This place has been here for ages and when I have blankets or large laundry to be washed. You can count on The Ultramat Laundromat. The place is clean and well kept witch is a plus. It's been a while since I last visited this place but for the Large machine it's $6.00 and they have another machine witch they charge $4.00 I am guessing it's the next size down from the biggest washer. The dryers cost 25cents for a 5 minute cycle. That's not to bad and if you forgot to bring your laundry supplies well it's gonna cost you $1.00 to buy a box of soap or fabric softener. I've been a customer at the Ultramat for about five years and I think it's a great place. I wanted to write a review because I disagree with some of the negative reviews on here. Everyone who works there is always very friendly and helpful. It's nice to go there during the cafe hours to get some coffee and go online while your clothes are washing. There is free WiFi and there is usually someone there to help you connect to it. You should definitely try it out. I think it's the best laundromat in Santa Cruz! read more

I've been to this place twice now with my girlfriend to do our vast amounts of laundry. It always seems to be pretty empty, but even when there are few people inside, their washers are so small that most of them are already taken up. They are also very expensive for a laundromat. I've also seen some negative reviews about the owner of this place being a creep and all that, but I've had nothing but good experiences with him. He always seems to be very helpful and the last time I was in there, he closed up while we were finishing and we had a nice little chat until we were done. read more

to be completely honest, my washing experience here started out rough, but the awesome customer service made my night great! --Customer service: 11 out of 10 so after putting in $5 in the big washer, my last quarter got jammed. It was 10pm and no workers in sight. I was getting really frustrated and almost packed up and left. But the owner walked in and immediately saw I was in trouble and came to the rescue. He unjammed the machine and handed me my $5 back, no questions asked. Superb! To add to that, when he left, the worker Jorge came in. Jorge was sooo helpful. He told me which machines to use for optimal heat. He was very courteous and sociable. Every ten minutes Jorge walked in to make sure all was good. --Machine usage: 8 out of 10 Great machines. They actually dry faster than the other laundry mats I go to. Clothes washed nicely and the dryers did their job well. --Price wise: 9 out of 10 Because I do my large loads (blankets, sheets, pillows, towels) every 3 months, as I have a lot of them, I usually spend $40 at other laundry mats. However, I only spent $40 at UltraMat and got the same, if not better, outcome. All in all, I would definitely go here again, especially on a Saturday night when the place is empty. This place never opens on time. I got here at 7:50ish in the morning but wasn't open for half an hr. Most machines are out of order. It's $$$. It's dirty inside. There were also not a lot of machines, so we ended up using a bigger one than we wanted because none of the toploaders were available. Yes, there is a cafe but it seemed to be drinks only, and the drinks were expensive. As mentioned in other reviews, there is an older gentleman who works there who was getting a bit friendly (ie creepy) with a college-aged looking girl. Just went here to do couple loads of laundry and I can't believe how shitty it is. First of all, most of the washing machines didn't work and there was no "out of service" signs to notify the customers so I had to run around the place testing every fucking machine before I found one working. It was so bad I ended up losing 10 bucks before finding a machine that works. I came here initially because I live a block away. Big mistake. First the attendant was a complete pervert. He hit on me and then later on some obviously underage girls saying he was a film producer and that he could get them in movies. Such a sleeze bag. Next my laundry got locked in the machine and wouldn't finish the spin cycle. All of a sudden the perv is no where to be found. I came into this laundry mat the other day, and was very pleased to find they had free wireless internet for my laptop. This was great because I could do my schoolwork while I waited. There was also a cafe that I did not try, but thought it was a good idea for a laundry mat. While I was waiting, there was a very helpful man who was working that fixed my iphone, which was also a bonus. The small washers were very nice, and I had no problems with drying. I recommend this place as a more entertaining alternative to the monotonous act of washing your clothes. read more

I have to give this laundromat 5 stars, especially considering the 1st one I attempted to go to down by the boardwalk! This place has to be one of the cleanest laundromats I've been to. Lots of machines, functioning change machine on-site, reasonably priced.
