Unfortunately, I cannot give this business a good review. I have taken my clothes to this cleaner for years, although I have not used them since new owners took over. Recently, I took 2 heavy cotton sweaters to be cleaned. They came back smelling so bad I could not wear them. I took the back and complained. They cleaned them again, and they still smelled the same. I do not think they are changing their solvents frequently enough, so clothing does not come back clean. I hate to give a bad review, because this is a very convenient business for me to use. but I am now using another cleaner. read more

Very expensive, seems the price everything from out of blue I've got charge $100 with no explanations for 3 items when I came pick them up. Just like that. Seems her business doing not well, but why she charging so much taking prices from clouds - very terrible. Is it me or do dry cleaners make you nervous too? I don't know. Maybe it is just me, but I'm convinced that if aliens ever did try to infiltrate our simply little green planet, they would probably do it through some portal at the dry cleaners. I mean, can YOU tell me what goes into the dry cleaning process? I didn't think so. So with much postponing, I finally caved and brought my king size, 550 weight. goose down comforter in for its once every 5 years cleaning. The woman at the counter was nice enough, and clever. The happy couple here built a wall to hide the actual laundering facilities from the prying eyes of neurotic girls like me (come to think of it, this is Santa Cruz.... there are TONS of neurotic girls like me here). Anyway, after repeating myself like 4 times that I wanted my comforter washed in a laundry machine, you know, with soap and water, not dry cleaned, she handed me a little green slip. In three days I would be $42 poorer, but with a clean comforter. Today's pick up was easy enough, and I am happy to report that my comforter looks beautiful, and there is no evidence of alien tampering. read more

I use their cleaning service once in a blue moon and have no complaints. I recently paid $6.50 for a pair of black pants with yogurt spilled all over them. They now look brand new so it was worth it. What really stands out about this place is their alteration skill. Along with the yogurt pants, I brought in a tuxedo style vest in need of alternation. This place was my last resort after being rejected by two other cleaners apparently because of the complicated seams at the shoulders. The lady at Almar gave it one glance and said $28. I thought it was a little pricey, but considering that no one else wanted to touch it, I didn't hesitate. I picked it up a few days later and it looked perfect! From now on until I learn to do them myself, I'm taking all complicated alterations here. I wish they taught sewing lessons! read more

Great friendly people who work here (well, it's the same lady every time i go but I'm just extrapolating). They've never ruined any of my clothes and are basically everything I could want in a dry cleaners. The real test came when I brought in my down comforter that had received a real beating, let's just say the result of st. patrick's day: no dinner, 8 shots of whiskey followed by 5 irish car bombs. I just wasn't sure whether Almar could step up to this challenge. But Almar did not let me down and my comforter is good as new. Impressive. read more

I come here for alterations on my clothes. I've been here four times and the older Asian woman who works the front is always so accommodating and friendly. Only thing is that the alterations here are pricey. I've had to hem a few dresses on the bottom and each dress was $30 (noting that the fabric was easy to work with, there was no time crunch) and to shorten the straps on another dress was $20. But if pricing isn't an issue, then I would recommend for their reliability. Plus, they allow you to try on the altered clothes after getting it back to make sure you are satisfied with the job. read more

I really only frequent Almar Cleaners because it is within walking distance of my house. I was happy with my service, which included removing a pink stain from my white pea coat, but would have been happier if the price had been about $10-15 cheaper. I bring all my dry-cleaning here. The woman at the counter is friendly and professional and their prices are reasonable. They have removed any stains I pointed out to them, and expedited a dress (with a stain) I needed for a wedding the next day without any problems. I've also gotten some minor alterations done and have been happy with her tailoring work on those items. One job she did was a pair of trousers with a French cuff that needed to be shortened - they fit perfectly now and the cuff looks exactly how it is supposed to. read more

Got my jeans hemmed and they used string that was a different color (yellow compared to the goldish string traditionally found on blue jeans). Probably fine for cleaning, not for alterations. This was also after specifically asking if they match string color. read more

Maybe SF ruined me for the pinnacle of dry cleaning and tailoring, but Santa Cruz has a great option in Almar Cleaners. My caveat is that I have never had a very complicated alteration here. (My idea of complicated is altering an expensive Off the Rack slacks from Italy with lots of details in the waist band / pleats, etc, and getting it taken in from a size 5 to 1. or completely dismantling an Obi that has one side blue-black selvedge denim and the other side a delicate embroidery with light pink flowers.) I just had buttons and hooks resewn into my slacks and dry cleaning done. Yes, it's a bit pricey, but what does everyone expect with a Green option of dry-cleaning. The old more toxic way is cheap and dirty, literally, to the environment. Everyone is so used to inexpensive things, it's seriously crazy. If you need to save money, there are other cleaners in the area, like that little eco one Mission Dry Cleaners (near Sabieng Thai), but I don't like it there because they put little sticky tags (that tore off my labels when I tried to remove them) on my clothes to track them (or something) and were the reason I had to fix my pants in the first place, because they somehow broke off my pant hooks when cleaning them. In that particular case, the money I "saved" went directly back into fixing another new problem, so where did I save $$ again? I've also been to Vapor, which is fine for the most part, but the Tailor in there is creepy and the alteration I did there, a silk dress, came out frumpy and ill-fitted. I rate this a 5/5 as good as it gets because they also have super duper fast turn around for dry cleaning. As soon as one-day as long as you submit your clothes early enough in the morning! Last minute, forgot your suit for the wedding the next day conundrum? Call Almar and see if they can help you. Personally, I am very direct, so I don't need to be chatty Cathy with my cleaners. I think I went in and out of there at least 5 times before I even had a whole conversation with the woman who works there. I really like the fact that she appears right when you walk in. Other places have a dumb bell, or someone who looks like they are in the middle of chewing something from their lunch break.. They are professional and courteous, something many businesses lack in SC. read more

I think they're great! Never had a problem. The best was when I came in at 2pm one day and pleaded to get a pair of trousers cleaned for 10am the next morning. I had a job interview the next day and it was my best option. They said it was fine and I got it back no problem. I've never given them anything super fragile or challenging other than suits, pants, and shirts... so I can't really be sure that they're the best ever, but they're friendly, and local, and a great neighborhood option... it really rounds out that perfect little Safeway Shopping Plaza which has more stores useful to me and better restaurants than the Capitola Mall. Plus they use the more environmentally-friendly technology in case you were wondering (I don't know all the specifics, I just know there's a poster about it in there). read more

Last year I took my sportcoat here to be cleaned. I was told a certain price. When I picked it up, I was charged $1 more that quoted. "Wool costs more", I was told. Angry, I left. Recently, a year later, I decided to give them another try. This time I had my white work shirts cleaned pressed & starched. Medium starch I asked. When I got them back, it was as if no starch at all had been used. Shirts were limp. When I mentioned this I was told "that IS medium starch, you wan't heavy starch that $1 extra per shirt". Are you kidding me?!!!!!!!!! I have had my shirts starched for years. Medium starch is nice & crisp, but not too stiff. These had little if no starch. Basically, if you want it done properly, I guess that costs extra here. What a rip-off. Stay away, unless you don't mind paying extra for what every other dry cleaners in Santa Cruz does for the quoted rate. I would give less that 1 star if I could. read more

Took my expensive J. Crew peacoat in to have the waist brought in and have the arms tightened a bit. She had me put the coat on so she could find the parts that needed to be altered. She really knew what she was doing and pointed out that I should have the back altered as well which I agreed with because I have bad luck with jackets having too much fabric on the back which causes me to look more hunched. It was going to be $65 I'm total to have it altered. I was super nervous for the whole week I had to wait and just went in today to pick it up. I tried it on and it looked so awesome!! I couldn't even tell where she made the alterations. The arms came out a little too tight but she said she would be able to fix it. I'm so happy though with how it came out. So I used to always take my things here and never had a problem. They were friendly and nice, but then, they completely ruined one of my favorite sweaters and when I couldn't find the same sweater to show how much it cost (90), or my receipt they only offered by 15 dollars in credit, like I would take it. So I wouldn't go here, neither do I recommend my friends to, so you shouldn't either unless you want to take the chance. read more

Everyone was very helpful and provided great assistance with tailoring my husbands suit and fixing some items my pets decided to chew (I had been heart broken when I found my vintage blanket with holes in it and a guilty looking puppy). Yes, the price for their services might be expensive for what it is, but patronizing green businesses is hip, environmentally-friendly, and cool, right? Either way, my clothes are always ready by the promised time and none of my garments have every gone missing. Their quality of work is pretty good, all spots are thoroughly cleaned and the entire garment is pressed and hung to be wrinkle-free. They've been pretty reliable and I've had no issues with their work, and the fact they're located next to a Safeway makes it even more convenient for you to run your errands. read more

Although Almar might be EXPENSIVE, it does provide excellent service and has been more than accommodating when I have asked for an expedited turn over. I tried Almar for the first time a few months ago. First, they lost a very expensive jacket. They only pursued looking for it at my insistence. It was eventually found. I had also left a shirt with them. That was not done even though they had had it for over a week. I had to come back several days later. I felt everyone can make a mistake so I tried to use them again. I brought in two blouses. At that time they said their records did not show my every picking up the jacket and they wanted me to pay for the cleaning of that too...but of course, I already had it and had paid for it. When I said I would bring in the cc statement showing paid, they backed down. Yes, I should have walked out then, but I didn't. I left my shirts with them asking when they would be done. When I came to pick them up a few days later, they were charging me an outrageous sum for them. I asked why; they said because one shirt was "long" so they charged me for a dress. The difference between the two shirts was about 1 inch. I've had these blouses for several years and no other cleaner had every identified them as a "dress". They also said they had gotten it done the next day, even though I didn't request that, and now they wanted the "express" fee. When I stated this was not okay, the girl mocked me and said if I didn't like it to get the police! Rude, unprofessional, undependable and unbelievable. read more

I've been using yelp reviews for years, but this was finally the experience so bitchingly awesome I had to finally write one myself. So, last Christmas my dad bought me an amazingly rad leather jacket.. only problem was I'd lost about 30 pounds since the last time he saw me, and he's crap at eyeballing a persons size anyways apparently, so it was way too big. After being told by many people that leather jackets are too risky to get tailored and it'll just get ruined, I simply put it in the back of my closet, hoping someday I'd get fat. Then, last week out of no where i decided what the hell, ill just give it a shot, and found out that Almar Cleaners was the closest tailor. I took it in and the lady (shoulda asked her name, she was really nice) only looked at me for about 2 mins (which made me really nervous actually) before saying she had it and it would be ready in a week. I went back in, all prepared to put up a fight for my, i was sure ruined, leather jacket. Fit like a goddamn glove. And on top of that as I was joking around about hearing how hard it was to tailor a leather jacket she laughed and said usually they are fine, but mine had been GLUED at the seams, making it a little tricky (it's from Turkey, so ill blame it on that). Ziru (one of the previous reviewers) did a disservice by rating them 3 stars. Let's see, they expedited your order, did a "perfect" job on the skirt, and you're bitching about non-stretchy thread? They did a rush job and you said their service was "great." How is that not at least 4 stars? We recently moved from West side SC to Scotts Valley and still drive over to use Almar--they're that good. read more
