Finally got to try the Omakase at Umai although my husband wanted à la carte so we couldn't go with the sushi bar. Fish was fresh and delicious. I went with the 12 piece Omakase without Eel and enjoyed every piece (no soy sauce or wasabi, just chefs choice). My husband loved the Umai Big Special roll. Service was great. No rushing like many NJ restaurants and very helpful servers. Our high top table was right next to the sushi bar so we could see and hear what was going on. Next visit I definitely want to be at the bar. The restaurant is small and intimate. Definitely lots of "regulars" with relationship with the owner/chef. He was very friendly to us from afar. I would love to be a regular, it's just too pricey for my weekly budget but definitely worth every penny. If you eat sushi in NJ you've got to try it. Small restaurant in a strip mall, this location is easy to miss! We opted for the full omakase menu which includes a starter of edamame. The truffle salt edamame was delicious!!! Sitting at the sushi bar, we were ready to EAT! Just absolutely loved every bite... most fish is flown in from Japan! The simplicity of each bite allows you to appreciate the freshness of the fish. Absolutely appreciated the authenticity of this place. There are so many sushi places that are so Americanized / gentrified that they've lost the art of sushi itself. They claim to fly in most of their fish from Japan daily (for fish denoted on the board with an asterisk) and the taste certainly makes this claim believable when compared to other authentic establishments in NYC and California. Here - you can eat your nigiri and maki rolls with your hands! No chopsticks! Keep it authentically Japanese. Firstly, you don't need to do omakase- there's an a la carte menu and more of the typical rolls you'd expect at all sushi places. We opted for the 18 omakase course so we could taste a variety and enjoy the creativity. We started with edamame drizzled with delicious truffle oil. The menu is designed to start with lighter to heavier, fattier fish. Wow. What a delight. You need to come here with an appetite. There were a couple of pieces that were quite rich for me and the chef also cut some of the bigger pieces in half for me as one bite would have been overwhelming for me. We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner along with the sake we brought. Since we came in for the second seating on a Thursday night, we had the pleasure of having the full, undivided attention of Chef Kevin. He was fantastic and his magic alone would make us return here. This rating is solely based on the omakase experience. The fish was fine but every piece of omakase seemed very basic. My husband also said it was overly salty and I agree. We initially were going to do the 18 piece set but after a couple pieces that were a miss, we asked our waitress to change to 12 piece. Also the difference between 12 and 18 piece, the cost was almost double. This could be a decent spot, but they need to work on the flavor profile. My friend had lost our yearly bet on baseball so he was on the hook for dinner. In the only right fashion, I decided to pick an Omakase for the occasion. Umai Omakase is not off the main road so I really hadn't known about it other than the recommendation of a friend. The space inside the actual restaurant is fairly small but had a comfortable atmosphere. The chef we had for the occasion was friendly and pleasant. He had a few attempts at humor that didn't always hit but I appreciated the effort. The food itself was fresh and delicious. I thought the variety of the fish and dishes was well-thought-out. For the duration of the 18 piece meal, I never felt overly full and thought the pacing was great. Omakase is not something you'll get all the time (my bank account wouldn't survive) but I thought the experience here was top notch. Finally! A high quality sushi place which specializes in omakase. Cannot believe it took me this long to get to this Essex county gem. I guess I had lost faith that there could actually be great sushi in NJ. (Admittedly I generally go to the city for my omakase fix) The chef restauranteur was there the entire time overseeing it all. We loved our seats closer to the chalk board, this spot allows you to see all the prep going into the creation of each piece. We opted for the 18 piece omakase for $150 which I thought was a fair price. The fish quality, cuts and presentation were spot on. We had only 1 piece, the hamachi which was so so. But everything else was delish. The wagyu was delish, they had the seasonal goldeneye snapper which was also lovely. They do a few cool unique preparations for the last three pieces. One is tuna with a raw quail egg topped with uni. It's a pretty amazing decadent bite. The sushi rice is yummy too. We learned by speaking with the chef/owner that this location will be converting to an all omakase place with a standard 15piece omakase which will include a handroll and dessert. This is I being done as they prepare to open a new concept place called Fat Buddha with 150 seats down the way in Caldwell. I am going to continue to patron this little hole in the wall omakase place. It is so exciting to have a spot like this less than 15 minutes from my home. Tucked away off the main road in a tiny little complex sits Umai Sushi & Steakhouse. The restaurant itself is very cozy inside to the point that I'd recommend doing a reservation prior. After hearing lots of good things from friends and coworkers alike, I decided to venture out and try the Omakase menu. The menu consisted of either 12 pieces for $85 and 18 pieces for $150 along with some A La Carte offerings on the side. I opted to do the 18 piece omakase, and safe to say it did not disappoint at all. The fish was very fresh and each piece of nigiri was crafted to perfection while still maintaining their respective and distinct individual flavor profiles. I definitely had some personal favorites excluding the heavy hitters like the wagyu and the toro/otoro. . I had an 830pm reservation and, I believe ended around 10pm ish . My new favorite sushi place in NJ! I was very impressed by the freshness and quality of the fish. You know it's a legit sushi place when they have toro and uni on the menu. For apps, I recommend the toro tartare, yellowtail jalapeño, and kani salad. They also gave edamame on the house. They were all good, not more outstanding than our favorite spot in Montclair but as good. Nicely done interior for this little spot. I tried to make a reservation for the Omakase experience, and was informed by the owner that it is only served at the bar. I asked to be accommodated at a table due to my disability, and he said that unless I could get out of my chair and into a bar seat, it wasn't possible. I told him that this was a discriminatory violation of ADA Law, and he replied "I'm not trying to be discriminatory, that's just how we do it here." To be clear- if a disabled customer is not able to experience the same menu and service as non-disabled customers, that's illegal. On top of that, the owner was not very polite or empathetic to this issue. I will not be patronizing this business. ADA Law: "An accessible table has a surface height of no more than 34 inches and no less than 28 inches above the floor. At least 27 inches of knee clearance must be provided between the floor and the underside of the table. Fantastic addition to the community. In a county that's pretty densely populated with so many "sushi" options, this one is by far a stand out spot without being pretentious. We kicked things off with the soft shell crab appetizer which was a crispy delight and I have had my fair share of soft shell crab. I would highly recommend the Omakase option (12, 18 or 22 pieces) each piece was not just fresh but you could taste every single delicate texture and flavor each held its own down to the warm perfectly cooked and seasoned grains of rice. We opted for the 12 piece; it's hard to say my favorites but if I had to pick: Himachi, Aji, Toro, Wagyu. Every single piece was like a new gift and that's not an exaggeration. Allen (hope I spelled that right) is a great example of identifying a passion and sticking to it no matter what stage in life that might be. Umai Sushi is the BEST local sushi and omakase spot in New Jersey. The pieces are incredibly fresh and flown in from Japan daily. The owner gives classic Jersey and is super sweet and passionate about what he's created. The sushi is inventive and delicious. The ambiance is a little strange, there are colorful lights and tequila bottles among the decor choices. Acoustics are also pretty terrible and the sound level is high. But who cares, it's the best spot. The bar seating is reserved for Omakase, but there are regular tables and a few high tops if you aren't looking to drop $85 for 12 pieces. If you're a vegetarian or vegan, the only options you have is edamame (there are 3 different kinds), shishito peppers, and avocado or cucumber rolls. They have asparagus on the menu but didn't have any asparagus rolls when we went. Extremely limited. I hope they add a few additional vegetarian options - I bet they could make a dope veg special roll. One word: wow. To echo other reviews, we walked away after our meal at Umai proclaiming this was the best sushi we have ever had. We started off with the edamame with spicy tagarashi before diving into the 12 piece omakase. Each piece tasted exceptional- buttery soft and bursting with flavor. The thoughtfulness that went into each piece is clear. We also ordered 2 special rolls (our eyes are bigger than our stomachs- we could've done without them) which were delicious as well. The owner is very welcoming and even let us have some of his sake while ours was chilling (it's BYO). I recommend making reservations, especially during the weekend. The sushi combos were pretty tasty as well. Nice to have a restaurant serving high quality fish in the area. The sushi rice was very flavorful compared to other places (not sure that's typical for sushi rice). BYOB but there is a "stash" that is offered if you don't have any and free complimentary bottled water. Wish there were other beverage options like hot tea. It was neat to see the chopstick boxes of the other patrons who must dine there often. 18 pieces left me full enough but not stuffed. My daughter treated me to an Omakase lunch for my birthday at Umai. I must say it was the best gift a foodie can receive. Six stars for food if Yelp had the option. The exterior is quite deceiving yet once you enter, you are transported to an amazing and authentic sushi experience. Umai is a small, intimate spot with a warm atmosphere. The owner, Allen Perchonok is very engaging and truly passionate about his restaurant. It shows with each bite of only the freshest fish and ingredients. Many of the fish options are flown in fresh from Japan. The rice is also on another level. It serves as an incredible bed of deliciousness upon which the fish and wagyu rest. You don't need soy sauce or any other accoutrement. That would be a sin. We had the 12 piece Omakase which is listed on a blackboard and can change slightly. There is also an a la carte menu at the tables. Each course has its own "wow"factor. Even the complimentary edamame is addictive.Highlights were the wagyu, the scallop with black rock salt, the hamachi, the toro, and on and on. There is a 12 piece option as well as a 22 piece. Thought 18 was perfect for me; no need for appetizers as it was definitely filling enough on its own but not over the top. Alan let us know he is a classically trained French chef so his omakase style is not pure traditional Japanese. He does some interesting flavor combinations which I thought were delicious and fresh. Quality of the fish was excellent across the board. Still some of not the best sushi I've ever had and that includes Nobu , Blue Ribbon. The place is always packed and for good reason. However, the waitress service is not good for a place where your paying money like that. They sit at the corner of the sushi bar on their phones waiting for their orders. No checking back on you. If your paying that price you need far better service. Also, if you're getting Omakase you are definitely treated much better than the tables. The owner pays attention to you. During a recent visit to Umai Omakase, the freshness and quality of the fish were impressive. First, the quality of the fish was excellent and fresh. Also, the website shows a picture of sushi, so you are not going there to be surprised by relatively high expectations. Second, the sushi taste balance and course of the taste were great; they started with lighter flavors and progressed to richer ones. Third, they only offer bottled water, whether sparkling or regular, which I was very satisfied with. No tap water is getting served. Fourth, the restaurant is only RSVP, so it's not overcrowded and noisy. You can enjoy sushi in a quiet environment. Fifth, how sushi is presented on a stoned plate was beautiful. Last, its BYOB, which I always love to bring my favorite wine. However, several aspects of the experience left me disappointed and unlikely to return. Firstly, the division between the kitchen and customer seating eliminated any chef interaction, contrary to the omakase tradition of engaging directly with guests to tailor the experience based on their preferences. This lack of interaction with the chef detracts from the essence of Omakase, where the chef prepares the food and engages with diners to tailor the experience to their tastes and preferences. This interaction is a crucial element in traditional Omakase and contributes significantly to the overall enjoyment and satisfaction of the meal. Secondly, I observed sanitation practices, specifically how the chopsticks rests and tables were wiped down. The server cleaned the table with paper towel around the still-used chopstick rests and later wiped the rests themselves with a cloth, not taking them to wash with food-grade dish soap and dry. This approach raises doubts about the effectiveness of their cleaning methods in preventing microbial contamination. Last, the overuse of a torch on the sushi detracted from the natural qualities of the fish. Traditional Japanese omakase sparingly uses a torch to enhance flavors without overwhelming them, but the fish was fully cooked here, compromising the texture and taste. The restaurant has the potential and hopes to improve these areas to provide an omakase experience that respects the cuisine's subtleties and essential hygiene standards. read more

We were eating our appetizers & the server came over in mid bite & took the food away saying the food was on its way. How rude!! Plus it didn't come for over 20 minutes after. Then after dinner we were finishing up our wine they had just opened for us & they made us leave. I understand there are reservations waiting, but it's the way it was said & done. Going to tell you the other half of the story because it has relevance to the ownership situation at Umai: Arrived at the other place it's super cheesy. It was like a newly renovated sports bar with a sushi counter on one side. But again, was going on faith that it had the same sushi so everything would be all right. Then I looked at the wine list. Absolute trash. When I see Kim Crawford on the menu I become Paul Giamatti in Sideways when Merlot is mentioned. Now Umai Omakase is BYOB, so I had a beautiful bottle in the car and asked if I could bring it in. "OK, wait, let me call the owner and ask". She was aware of the situation because the other restaurant had called that we would be coming and I reiterated what had happened and that this restaurant was not equipped to properly handle my celebration. We had a lovely birthday dinner at Umai. Deducting one star for the following two reasons: 1. When we arrived, we noticed two chefs' stations (left and right). The seats in front of the right station were reserved, so we took two seats in front of the left chef's station. There ended up only being one chef, and since he was on the other side of the bar, we could not see any of his preparation. If there is only going to be one chef, he should be centered. For $300+ I would have liked to see the food being prepared, which in my opinion, is the best part of an Omakase. Next time I would reserve specific seats in my reservation. 2. Because we had the last two seats from the chef & were last two to be served, our portions seemed smaller than the people next to us. There were a few courses where I swapped pieces with my husband so he could have the bigger piece of fish. Overall, the food was great, BYOB, and they had an awesome Spotify playlist going.
