I have been back to Kyoto several times since my last review. Consistently fresh sushi, well prepared and served at the correct temperature. Very friendly and accommodating staff providing attentive, fast service. Casual dining area and decent prices. My only minor demerit is that they seem to have cut back on the variety of fish offered a bit over the years. But that's not a deal breaker. I will be back for sure. read more

We were welcomed in by the very friendly staff, our order was taken promptly, and food was served quite quickly - all major pluses. I ordered a pretty simple meal - miso soup, a cucumber roll, and 4 pieces of hamachi nigiri. All was very tasty, and the fish was super fresh, but IMO there was an issue with the rice - it wasn't sticky enough! In the roll it wasn't quite so much of an issue - the nori held it together - but it was impossible to pick up the nigiri without the rice falling apart. I've largely been tepid on Kyoto Sushi over the years; I had a sit-down dinner there maybe six or seven years ago that was hit or miss (Kyoto Roll was really, really good, but the Godzilla Roll had a few fishy bites, which is the kiss of death for me, sushi-wise), and I avoided it for a while. That's also partly due to discovering Kenko Sushi in Lincoln Park, which is the best sushi I've ever had and puts pretty much everything else to shame. Since COVID, I've started ordering lunch here from time to time for pickup. It's a quick drive and with a little firsthand knowledge of the parking lot layouts nearby, you can easily avoid the drama on Route 23 if needed. In terms of service, you're obviously not dealing with waitstaff when picking up, but I haven't had to hang out awkwardly in the restaurant for ages waiting for my pre-ordered food to arrive - that aspect of the experience had been consistently solid, and the girl behind the register is always pleasant. Over the past few months, I've been ordering sweet potato ($5) and salmon & avocado ($6.95) rolls. Both have been decent for the most part, especially the salmon/avocado. Once, the sweet potato wasn't cooked enough, and another time there was an overly crunchy layer that was tough to chew through, but 90% of the time it's been fine. I also tried the sushi pizza appetizer with spicy tuna ($8.95) a few weeks ago - a wee bit messy but very tasty. My opinion of Kyoto overall hasn't changed too much from my first experience, but I've adjusted my expectations as well. At the risk of beating a dead horse, if you're really famished and want to go balls to the wall with special rolls, I'd head up 23 to Kenko, but the regular rolls do the job here - there's no shame in ordering from a place that is a solid double versus a guaranteed home run. read more

Horrible service at this location in Cedar Grove, came in on Saturday** with my family (entire place was empty) and the service was so horrendous that we walked out. I'm glad I did because I shared our experience with my neighbor and they mentioned they had food poisoning after ordering food here. We left and went to Miga sushi in Livingston. Took another 15 minutes but the food was absolutely delicious and the service was wonderful! Highly recommend this place instead. read more

Decent local sushi place. BYOB. Few tables, smallish place. Busy with dine in and takeout customers. This is our neighborhood spot for easy, non fussy affordable Japanese food. We have ordered bentos in the past, they're not bad. Best value is sushi/sashimi combo for two (the love boat). It's a lot of food for less than $60. comes with salad and soup (not one or another). Workers were not Japanese, if you care about that. Personally, I'd bring Sake, Soju, Beer or all of the above to make it a really a happy meal....as well as a designated driver of course. I went here with my husband who is of African American descent and the short older woman there is clearly a racist, I'm not sure she is self aware of it either. We spent over $185 that evening but received $20 fast food treatment. The portions were terrible compared to their prices. "Oh My Sushi" in little falls is far better for the price, they are not stingy with the portions and they were far more friendlier to my husband. Kyoto is racially disgusting and stingy. read more

Great spot, great service, always happy and quick to see you. I have been here a couple times and my favorite is the Spicy California Roll dinner (great price) and the Chicken Tempura Roll. The Hibachi Noodles were very good too. Tonight I got the Fantasty Roll, it was good. Not my favorite, I wish the mango was sweeter but it is not their fault. I also wish the roll had a bit more of a kick to it and something to mellow it out like cucumber or avocado maybe. I just prefer the Chicken Tempura rather than this Roll. I got the Steamed Pork Gyoza and they were great, filling is juicy and outside is nice and soft. One of my new favorites. (Of course I had to get the strawberry soda to go along with this meal!!) Even with the reviews, I highly underestimated this place. We ordered the steak hibachi, kani salad, and beef negimaki and wow everything was so good. I went into Kyoto with a friend for lunch on a weekday. She's been going there for years, but it was my first time. I definitely enjoyed my experience! The food was good and fresh and the restaurant itself is very comfortable. The thing I think was most memorable was The variety of cold appetizers they offered. I'd call Kyoto Sushi a fairly standard sushi restaurant. There's seating for about 16 I'd say, with a lot of takeout going on. I visited recently and was treated very nicely. The sushi I ordered was fresh and delicious. I didn't try anything overly exotic, but fresh and delicious is enough to satisfy me in the sushi realm. Our favorite go to sushi place in our new neighborhood. We order online and pick up in store. Unless there's a rush, it's always ready on time. There is parking lot to park in when picking up so that helps. I always get the vegetarian sushi- sweet potato, vegetarian and honey peanut and avocado rolls with a side of spicy mayo. Ordered takeout from here tonight and had a great experience, start to finish. They estimated it would take about 45 minutes, and the food was delivered in less than half an hour. We ordered the spicy maki combo and chicken teriyaki. Both came with miso soup and salad- the soup was hot and had a decent amount of seaweed and tofu, and the ginger dressing on the salad was delicious- not runny at all like some other sushi places. The fish was super fresh, and you can't beat the amount of food you get for the price. The gal who took my order was friendly, as was the delivery guy. Follow up review from previous. We decided to give this place another try. However, things have gotten worst. This place is the stingiest place I have ever ordered from. The portions have gotten even smaller but the prices remain the same. The amount they give you isn't enough for a 2yr old child. I don't see how they can stay in business. If you like small portions, then this place is for you. Save your hard earned money. Stay away from this place. They count on you not noticing that the trays and containers change size weekly. I know... if you've read any of my other reviews you probably would have expected me to open with something more witty or at least something more serious sounding, but in this case "pretty darn good" really sums up my opinion. Kyoto Sushi III is your typical American neighborhood sushi restaurant. They have bento boxes, teriyaki, and all the usual types of sushi, sashimi and colorful sounding sushi rolls that you normally find at these sort of restaurants.You're not going to find Ankimo, Kampachi or seared Wagyu beef sushi here. It's not that kind of place, and they don't pretend to be. What elevates Kyoto Sushi III is that everything they do, they do very well. Their lunch specials are a bargain and the quality is definitely a step above some of the local competition. They also have quite a few interesting culinary creations that are unique to the restaurant, which you can see pictures of lining the walls. The service is both attentive and accommodating, although depending on the server you get, you may have some minor communication issues if you have any special requests. Kyoto Sushi III has become one of my favorite local go-to places for sushi, especially for lunch. I haven't had a bad meal there yet, and I recommend you give them a try.
