I'm writing because I am extremely upset and honestly disturbed by the care my boyfriend received in your ER on 3/27/26, specifically from a nurse named Emory. When he first arrived, he was asked about allergies and medications he has had adverse reactions to, and he clearly stated droperidol. The staff member even responded back to him about it, which makes it undeniable that this information was heard and acknowledged. Later, while he was already under significant stress being told he might have a bowel obstruction, with staff talking about trauma team involvement, emergency interventions, and an NG tube, he became understandably anxious and asked for something to help calm him down. Instead of being met with any level of reassurance or support, he was met with dismissiveness and visible judgment. Then the nurse came in and administered medication without saying a word about what it was. He had to ask what he was given, and only then was he told it was droperidol; the exact medication he had already stated he has a severe reaction to. He immediately began having an adverse reaction and was in clear distress, and no one took accountability, no one apologized, and no one made any effort to comfort or even acknowledge what had just happened. It took approximately an hour for him to receive anything to counteract the reaction, including Benadryl and Ativan, and during that time he was left to deal with it on his own. That delay, combined with the complete lack of urgency or concern, is unacceptable. Even after he was given medications to counteract the reaction, the lack of monitoring was extremely concerning. He was not being rounded on appropriately, and his respiratory rate on the monitor was ranging from 8-16. I understand that normal respiratory rate is typically 12-20, but sitting in the 8s without anyone coming to check on him is alarming. There was no sense of urgency, no follow-up, and no reassurance during a time when he clearly needed observation. Nurses are typically supposed to round on their patients AT LEAST every hour and nurse Emory failed to do that. On top of that, the overall handling of his case was alarming. Staff were speaking as if this was a life-or-death situation and discussing invasive interventions like an NG tube before even confirming a diagnosis. He ultimately did not have a bowel obstruction and was discharged, which makes it even more concerning how quickly things were escalated without clear justification or appropriate communication. Watching someone I love go through that was incredibly difficult. I am a registered nurse at a different hospital, and while I fully understand the stress and demands of working in healthcare, there is no excuse for what happened here. This was not just a lapse in bedside manner; it was negligent, dismissive, and at times outright rude behavior from the care team. read more

The emergency room is a joke. Their sole function appears to be to turn people away. Once you get past the bad attitudes and prove you have an injury, then they will make you wait some more. Then when they finally assign you to a room, they want to do a full workup and pick something new to treat you for - instead of the injury you came in for. Time from check in to treatment was eight hours. And then the treatment for scraped and crushed legs did not include antibiotics. So disappointed. read more

I developed DVT after surgery due to negligence on behalf of the physicians at UMC. I was given a medicine I'm allergic to (Phenergan/Promethezine). I threw up for 36 hours immediately after surgery and was unable to take any medicine given to me post-op, this included blood thinning medication. I reported the incident multiple times. I've attached the latest response from UMC Patient Experience department. Apparently, the Chief Medical Officer reviewed my files and concluded that Promethezine wasn't prescribed to me. Phenergan is clearly written in the operative notes. I even shared the notes with them via email to review. Either they are covering it up, or else blatantly lying. They even sent a prescription of Promethezine to CVS post op, which they deny as well. I was admitted to the hospital for a surgical consult due to loss of feeling and mobility in my legs. The nurse on staff put a catheter in me after I repeatedly told her several times I did not want it. When neurosurgery did their consult I was laughed at and called a waste of time by the neurosurgeon. I filled a report with patient experience with no results except a slap in the wrist. They refused to even waive my bills for the visit. I lost my job due to this and UMC does not care. I have consulted attorneys on this and I urge anyone that has had similar experiences to join me in filing against the hospital. read more

Ttu Fm A medical, reception-staff, and patient services management review from a transgender woman who received care from both Dr. Prahbu and Dr. Bennett over the course of 3yrs. MEDICAL care review section: I initially had Prabhu, but I switched to Bennett for two reasons. First, I requested I have three prescriptions common for my transition. Prabhu said she'd continue to only give me one of them and how the other two aren't necessary. Talking to my trans friends who also see her, she gave them all the three prescriptions on day one. Why would her healthcare be inconsistent and refusing? The second reason, and final straw, was after Prahbu refused to approve a surgery consult for my partner's surgery and one of her reasons was in case my partner wanted to detransition later in life. That was the second best trans doctor in 300+ miles: ignoring needs of her patients in favor of her own "what ifs". Does she force cis people to become transgender "in case they want to transition later in life"? No. That would be unethical. And yet she treated us like that. Bennett was better. I walked in with my needs and she listened. She approved my prescriptions and even gave a confused look when I told her Prahbu wasn't giving me them. Even Bennett looked confused by Prabhu's treatment. With Bennett, my partner's surgeries are completed and our peace has grown at home because of it. The surgery and my prescription changes positively changed our lives. Kelly Bennett was a positive force in our lives. It didn't last. Still a one star. Bennett treated us inhumanly by the end of it all. It will be in the next section. FRONT DESK (reception): For years, their front reception staff misgendered me and my partner (and every trans friend I have who goes there also received same treatment from what they've told me). I stood in the check-in lines while staff poked heads around their office corners to stare and then jolt away when I look at them. I had countless interactions where their staff wouldn't look me in the eye. Some times they'd never even bothered to look at me. It never got better. I called and called over the years asking them to change. Never happened. Apparently they needed me to change too, but they never told me like I told them. I had a first-ever conversation with a different supervisor during which she told me "if you don't like it, you can leave." A trans person. Go where? I asked her that. She couldn't find a an answer for how I could find help anywhere else. Because there isn't anywhere else to go. They terminated care with me after that conversation. Bennett never once spoke to me at any point through all of this. After the news, it took two days of phone calls with higher-ups to learn that the receptionists had been unhappy with my responses to their mistreatment for a while. They never actually TOLD me so I could adjust and KEEP MY HEALTHCARE. God forbid they put hope in me changing in the same way I put hope in them changing. I called them for years. Many times crying unable to speak while still trying to get them to the base line of dignity and respect. My family suffered through years of constant mistreatment. They WILL treat you the same. Don't bother with the patient services office. The guy literally gave me a pitch for Plume like he found gold for the first time. Like we aren't thrown targeted ads for this stuff constantly. This is my literal body and life and you think I'd never heard of Plume?!?! That's called reduction. My life is lived. He reduced my life to having such little agency and experience that I couldn't possibly know of one of the most basic service groups. I told him my socio-economic status and asked him how I could afford that service? He had no answer. Worst of all, he thanked me after all of it. He thanked me and my partner for "revealing these needs to us and we will be making changes." Great... I now have a timer on my prescriptions with no solid hope or direction once the clocks hit zero. I will find healthcare. I just have to find it in, what Sam (head of patient services) referred to as "a trans healthcare desert." I said "yep, and you just took away the only oasis. After years of your staff trying to poison the oasis through their treatment." But yay their staff are getting sensitivity training. That was their only, actually spoken, direction for their next steps, btw. Sam just told me he'll put them in sensitivity training. I lose my healthcare and they lose an hour of their work for, most likely. a paid lunch training/meeting. What hope is there in their training? How were they trainings before this? They obviously weren't enough. They will treat you like garbage and then blame you for it. Feel free to replace "garbage" with the cuss word to make it rhyme. Closing remarks: I remember reading an article in which the journalist described Dr. Bennett as "An LGBTQ hero". Abandons her charges without communicating anything in any way, shape, or form. My daughter was here over 12 hours waiting on labs and ct scans had no rooms available and was sent to the lobby to wait. She was ill and had a list of things wrong mind you she is a student at Tech. This place gives zero shits and had no urgency on situation at hand. I'm in PA she is in TX this place is lucky wasn't there as a father I highly do not recommend this place at all. I'm writing regarding our experience with the hospital itself, not the ER. In late August, a family member was involved in a horrific car accident which claimed the life of another family member. The surviving relative was airlifted to the UMC Trauma Center with multiple broken bones, lacerations, contusions, a subdural hematoma and other injuries. I spent almost the entire time at the hospital while this person was in intensive care and then sent to the regular rooms. Our experience was extremely positive. The nurses were, without exception, accommodating, caring, positive, encouraging and attentive. The cleaning staff, meal services staff and other supporting staff were equally great. The social worker assigned to our case was compassionate and helpful and made sure our transition to inpatient physical therapy was as smooth as possible. They did a great job and these are the times when it matters most. read more

I had a pain in my left side and checked in to the ER on March 8th. They ran a cat scan and found a mass on my colon and on my liver. I had a colonoscopy on Sunday by Dr.Wondimagegnehu Sunday morning March 10th at 10am. They found a mass in my colon and a mass on my liver but took samples of the colon mass. I was on a clear diet from Friday thru Tuesday while they grow a culture, Wednesday March 13th they has the results and it was cancerous. I'm from Midland and I wanted to go to Oncology in Midland. But I felt pressure to attend Oncology in Lubbock. They told me the results would be send to my primary in Midland, This was on March 13th and we still don't have it. I sat in my dr office here for to hrs on April 2nd while they called both offices and still no results. They called dr Wondimagegnehu off and they didn't have a copy and called the Medical Records at FMC and they claim they didn't have a copy. and now 24 days has passed and nobody can find a copy of the results of the biopsy. For that this hospital gets an F if the can lose a report like this. You should look in to how this can happen. It's expensive enough to have this done once but to have to repeat this whole process is predictions. What a joke... They do not communicate. They string you along. It is quite apparent that unless you are bleeding and have bones protruding, they will take their time. Apparently there appears to be only one surgeon that can remove gallbladders and she is too busy dealing with gunshot and trauma surgeries. This place needs to be reported to the Texas Medical Examiner. New to Lubbock and this is very scary if this is the type of medical treatment that is being offered. read more

I go in to their ER looking for a little human compassion, since being diagnosed with CRPS {Google it, its THE MOST PAINFUL CHRONIC ILLNESS KNOWN TO MANKIND, *literally*, thats EXACTLY what you'll read if you do}, which is nicknamed 'the suicide disease', due to how many patients diagnosed with it feel no other choice but to just 'check out' permanently. Yet, all they did was constantly ask me if I took street drugs or even smoked weed, you people had BOTH my blood & urine, like 3 times by then, so the answer was an obviously resounding "HELL NO", its right there in front of you, so I could have easily done without them insinuating I was a drug abuser, when if anyone SHOULD be using whatever they could find to stop the constant level: hell pain, it'd be someone with CRPS. Spent over 18 hours laying in their joke of a waiting room, which should have a morgue directly attached to it for all the patients they dont bother to get to in time, only to be told I was there for drugs {THANKS for the two tylenol, which I could have gotten from a 7-11 around the corner and still probably received better medical care from}, then FINALLY seen by a doctor who spent less than three minutes with me, before they told me they were going to discharge me to the Salvation Army {I have a damned place to live, are you people psychotic, why even tell someone that?}. Shut this joke of an institution down before it costs even more people BOTH their dignity AND their lives, Lubbock. If this is Texas Tech at its finest, then God help us all. read more

Like many hospitals in America, you would expect to receive exceptional care from the healthCARE professionals, however, that is the last thing that you will receive. I came to UMC the other night with my sister who was having an asthma attack. We came to UMC because Covenant emergency room entrance was blocked off. I didn't know much about the hospitals in Lubbock since I am from Houston (we have plenty there), so I wasn't sure which was, was the BEST one out there. I can tell you for a fact this one isn't. It was more like we went to the hospital for Medicare and Medicaid patients. The service was awful. When we walked in, we didn't encounter any smiling faces, the nurses at the front acted like they didn't wanna help us either. They just looked at us with twisted faces and told us to fill out this form. The emergency room was packed with people that were waiting to be seen. One lady said she had been waiting for over 4 hours, another guy said he waited 10 hours!! He started complaining, cursing so loudly at the lazy nurses, and demanded his money back from a blood draw. I should have told him, "Listen, buddy, we in America, you have to pay for that tiny blood draw, and blood pressure check". However, I figured that would have upset him even more, so I didn't. We ended up waiting for 45 minutes while my sister was passing out, going in and out with her asthma attacks. It was horrible. I thought I was gonna lose her. So, I immediately found another emergency clinic that had better reviews on Google. We left the emergency room at UMC then this nurse said, "well, we were just about to call her name" I thought, "well, that's bull--" and as we left the nurse asked us if we were sure if we wanted to leave. We ignored her and left. Utterly disgusting service! read more

Since I cannot find any information on Dr Jennifer Phy (who is associated with this hospital)....I will leave my review here. I included this on the yellow pages already, so I copied and pasted: "She withheld information from my husband and myself that was very important in our trying to conceive journey (that because of my age she would not be able to help)...had we known this approximately 5 to 6 months ago, we would not have bothered making another appointment after that one (she had us wait until Dec after that appt in July because I had had a previous back surgery in Dec of 2018 and it was safer to wait at least a year) and we certainly would not have held out any hope of conceiving our second child. Can't go in to specific details, but we found it very hurtful especially since she knew she was going to tell us that last summer. Because I have PCOS, even after losing nearly 80 pounds, it is highly unlikely that we'd conceive naturally...and she knows that." read more

I have been admitted to UMC twice in the last two months for pretty lengthy stays. Given my circumstances, I had great experiences here. The nurses of 3E are incredible. I mean INCREDIBLE. The docs are often swamped, so you will be communicating to them through the nurses most of the time, if need be. Again, I just cannot praise the nurses at UMC enough. Be sweet to them. UMC seems to train their doctors, nurses, and other staff members to treat patients with the utmost care, compassion, and concern. This really showed when I was a patient: from my time in my room, in the OR, and walking the halls for some "stretch leg" time. Most everyone I ran into had time for a smile and a little chat or joke. The ER can occasionally have a bit of a wait, but if you walk in with a true, true emergency you are a priority. It also just depends on the amount of traffic the ER happens to be getting at the particular time you arrive. Have patience and ask for a warm blanket. That waiting room gets freaking cold, but those blankets are heaven. read more

Would not take my dog here especially an elderly dog. It is a teaching hospital not a cardiac hospital. Supposedly if your PCP recommends to go here, you have the wrong PCP. Sad if you don't have a cardiologist. ER is not competent to DX a heart attack... thought it was gallstones, not the way to save a life. An 8-12 hour stay after a simple angioplasty is acceptable but not in high risk patients. The PCP was the only reason my LO chose to come here. Procedure was put off for 24 hours, not too urgent obviously, medications could have been utilized first. Recovery turns into a 5-7 day not so fun stay. iatrogenic [i-at″ro-jen´ik] resulting from the activity of a health care provider or institution; said of any adverse condition in a patient resulting from treatment by a physician, nurse, or allied health professional. Largest killer in the US, 2nd is heart disease and 3rd is cancer, sobering. They allowed a 1st year medical student which is the equivalent of an NP to do a specialized procedure on a 93 year old which was a bad call since he already presented with pneumonia, high blood pressure and fragility. Now he has a hematoma located at the incision site that could be more than problematic. Pneumonia even with antibiotics is probably exacerbated due to being in CICU for 3 days, stats state 40% of all folks in ICU die. Shame on them for experimentation on the elderly. My mother was hospitalized here for severe burns. I believe the nurses at this hospital to be hard working and compassionate care-givers. However, the attending physicians providing care to my mother made no effort to speak to me personally (as a fellow Midwestern physician) despite my attempts to make this happen during the weeks I was there. How is this acceptable? Hence, my major criticism of this hospital is that the attending physicians are not available or willing to speak with family members of the patients they are providing care. Certainly, this should not be the case. It is almost unfathomable that they would not make time to speak with an on-site available family member (regardless of whether I am a board-certified physician - family members should be treated as family members). I had no choice but to leave my mother's care in the hands of physicians who would not take the time to speak with me; and we eventually got her transferred to an out-of-state hospital. At this out-of-state hospital, I immediately received a phone call from an attending physician after regular working hours and met with a different attending physician in person the following day. The lack of professionalism/concern for family members of Texas Tech patients is surprising to me, because I know that any other medical center would have been more receptive to meeting with a concerned family member. read more

I hate to write this review because some of these people did save my mom's life... and some of the doctors and nurses here were so amazing to us and I hate to group them in with our experience here. Yesterday (Monday) AM I got a text from my mom's phone saying she was involved in a car accident(new Iphone feature). Whenever I arrived on the scene, police officers told me she was on the way to UMC via ambulance. So I went to UMC and sat there for about 1/2 HR waiting for info and then the hospital called me to let me know my mom was at UMC? If it were not for the Iphones new feature, I would not have known for an hour after my moms accident that she was in critical care. Once they finally let me know what was going on... I went back where the trauma department took great care of her while waiting on CT scans. After CT scans returned, she was rushed to radiology to fix internal bleeding and they basically saved my moms life. While they were doing so, they were updating me throughout the whole procedure telling me that everything was going well. Very good people. Very good doctors. After her procedure was complete, she was moved to ICU where they said she would stay a few nights to insure full recovery and prevent infections that they said would kill her. Understood. she will be staying. She was still incoherent but could obviously feel a lot of pain as they could not keep her still. Her nurse decided to give her a bath before putting her in the system so that she could receive proper meds as she had just flipped 3 times in a car and had a catheter go into her pelvis for 2 and 1/2 hours. Another nurse came in and was saying that she was doing her job wrong... made us uncomfy about the care my mother was about to receive. Once she woke up, she was told that she couldnt move her RIGHT LEG until 5 PM. At 5:30 she sat up and the nurse came in and shoved her back down yelling in her face that she was told not to move until 17:55 (5:55). My mom then told me she wanted to leave as no one enjoys being yelled at. I calmed her down. Later she was extremely thirsty so she asked if she could have water and the nurse yelled at her again saying no. "The doctor hasnt said you can have water." What doctor? Wheres the doctor?? There was no doctor, we had been sitting there for hours. If there was one she obviously didnt ask. The nurse then went in the hallway in front of the door and chugged her V8 drink right in front of her. Rude. My mom then told the nurse that she wanted to leave and she again proceeded to yell that my mom was going to get an infection and die if her head wound was not professionally cleaned every few hours by the doctor for the NEXT FEW DAYS. Again.. what doctor? no one had checked her head so that had us thinking that she was going to die if a doctor did not come and look at her head since they stapled it at 10:30 that morning. After the last yelling at, the nurse went in the hallway and started gossiping about my mom and "how difficult she has been" and laughing at her to a handful of people. Finally I said something. After that my moms nurse was the nicest person on the planet? The next morning my mom calls me to come pick her up because they are discharging her? After they said she needs 24 hour care for the next 3 days at least, or that she will die. My mom can barely walk. Her hair is caked with blood that she cant wash out herself, or at all without numbing meds due to the slice in her head. She hasnt kept any food down. She is miserable. They told me I will have to take care of her 24/7 for the next 5 days and after I said that I was not able to, they changed their minds to "check on her every few hours". My mom lives alone. She cant walk to the bathroom and back. She cant eat. She cant get on and off her bed on her own. But she would rather crawl than to spend another second in that place. Thank you to the ones who cared about my moms life. To the rest of you, I hope you never have to watch your mom go through what mine did because of you. Do better. read more

The nurses are rude and apparently have never been to a hospital or know any information about billing, the process of getting checked in.. don't even worry about getting checked out. They put an in in your arm right when u get there so you can keep it in with no fluids for the entire wait. On top of getting there waiting for 3 hours then being informed there is a 12 hour wait and you can't leave because your "bill will be high" but don't ask about billing they have no idea how any of it works. Everyone there is rude, ignorant, and in accommodating. read more

Recently a young man with autism was brought to your ER after a traffic accident. He lives in Lubbock and his family lives in San Antonio. He asked several times to the staff at your ER to talk to his mother because he has autism and needs her help to communicate. He was told they could not do that. This is at 3am in the morning. He asked ER security to help and ER staff to help, a social worker would not help, Lubbock police couldn't help but at least tried to help. So his family drove to Lubbock from San Antonio in the middle of the night to only learn he had been discharged without addressing his neck, head or ribs. I am really embarrassed by the way this young man was treated with no regard to his repeated request. His mother has taught him that when something like this happens to look for someone in a uniform--policeman, fireman. He tried that to no avail. I realize he may not have understood what was going on around him which made it even more important for them to talk to a family member to help with that communications. Luckily he has no broken bones just sore and is resting as of yesterday. Maybe there needs to be some training on working with people with special needs. I have always heard the UMC was the best hospital to go to for your medical needs but now I am not so sure. Hopefully you will look into this matter so that something like this does not happen to another individual with any type of special needs. read more

This is an awful ER. I've been having laryngeal spasms. Not one person looked in my throat. I had super tight lungs from asthma flair-up. they gave me 1 neb treatment and put me in the lobby....5 hours later with a fever (needed ibuprofen and acetaminophen which the nurse refused to give me while I waited), and again had laryngeal spasms while sitting in the lobby, not 1 call back. No one would tell me any results. When I asked if I could have another breathing treatment, I was told no. I finally gave up and left. The front desk registrar told me I had to sign out AMA. I refused to sign it. It's not AMA if per quote from the charge nurse "you haven't been seen and a full head-to-toe from a provider". Which is why she wouldn't ask if I could have another breathing treatment??? Literally needed albuterol and steroids to get me home. I don't live here. I told her I needed to go so I could catch my flight because I'm not staying in Lubbock. Especially with nurses that apparently use lines they've read off a million times rather than using their brains. -btw, I've been a nurse for a long time. I know you can still treat patients in the lobby. Our ER typically has 1 doctor and only 9 beds and I still treat and sometimes street my patients from the lobby..., not here. nope. no common sense or compassion from these nurses at all. Not one nurse came to check on me. Just the registration clerk. read more

This place has been absolute hell to deal with. I had a check up and blood work done over a month and a half ago and called 5 times since then to schedule my actual appointments and they just now scheduled them. They have sent me over 700 dollars of bills based solely on blood work and "services" and you can not get ahold of them on the phone AT ALL. Once this is all done I doubt I'll ever come back here again but I'll update later. read more

the wait time in the ER is 7hrs + and if your in severe pain I mean 10+ while sitting they don't give a damn and will tell you to go sit and wait. I tried to explain that it hurts to much to sit down, severe pain down both my legs. after 7hrs and still not called back to see a dr. I finally told the nurses to take out the IV because I literally could not sit any longer, l had been crying for 5hrs straight with not a care in the world from any staff. I'll never go to UMC emergency again. covenant on the other hand got me back quickly, pain reliever and steroids to relieve to swelling caused by a bulging disc pressing on the nerves that run down my legs. read more

I had gone to UMC urgent care on Tuesday morning when I started to have some tooth pain and they prescribed antibiotics to which I immediately started taking. However my face and lips began to start swelling Wednesday morning and increased by that night so l we arrived at the ER around 8 pm due to the fact the swelling was increasing. I did not get seen until 2 pm the next day. Also very apparent they didn't seem to care about certain patients as THREE different people were moaning in immense pain, one lady even saying "i want to die" and nobody came to check on her or see if she was ok. Eventually.. they did take a blood and urine sample and gave me two pain medications once I was screened the first time. Also for the record I did not personally request for any pain medicine during the visit but it was given due to the swelling of my face. Finally at about 2 pm the next day I got into a room. (after roughly 14 hours. There was one young woman there even longer, she didn't get into a room until about 18 hours in) when i was finally seen and checked by the doctor, the doctor did not think the tooth abscess was big enough to be drained so all they did after me waiting 14 hours to be seen was give me the same exact antibiotics I'd been taking via IV. I finally was discharged but did feel a bit discouraged due to nothing seeming to be done, however the doctor seemed confident so I went home and rested. 3 hours later I woke up and my face and specifically my lips were about 3x times bigger than it was earlier and I was terrified. The last thing I wanted to do was go back to the hospital but I was so afraid for my health I was scared I wasn't going to wake up if I slept again from all the swelling. We waited a while to see if the swelling would go down before I called an ambulance this time and the ambulance asked which hospital I wanted to go to and I made the mistake of saying to take me back to UMC. I thought because they'd have my records they could see this was serious and see me sooner and do something to reduce the swelling because that was my biggest concern and seemed to be what was causing the most pain. I didn't even look like myself it was terrifying. When we arrived I was put into a screening room immediately and while waiting; overheard the current overseeing doctor AND a nurse mentioning me and how I came back after only a few hours and I heard them make an "mmhhhmm" sound. I was very confused why they'd do that? And when that same doctor came in to check on me, he mentioned "wow they /really/ took care of you this morning" I believe he was implying the pain meds they gave me. From that moment on I had a weird feeling. Like him and the nurse were judging me for something I wasn't aware of done. He then brushed my facial swelling off by comparing me to a man who came in earlier with an even more swollen face than mine and said I had 'minor' swelling but said the infection might need a different antibiotic or the abscess could likely be 'lanced' which just means they'd make an incision to drain the fluid. I was all for that. I even told the doctor I'm not looking for anything but a solution for the swelling(like it to be drained). He gave me the impression that if I went back in the lobby I would be seen and taken care of however I was grossly mistaken. We waited in the waiting room and not once in the five hours we sat there did they even come to check my vitals ONCE in the lobby despite checking the people around me multiple times and I was shaking and crying from how scared I was thinking I was going to die. My facial swelling seemed to get even worse too and they seemed to ignore me completely. My mother who was with me went to ask them when they might see me and the person at the front desk basically said the "Oh well the doctor doesn't think there is anything we can do for you right now" and also made a rude comment saying "we aren't a dentist" despite the fact the doctor told me to go wait in the lobby to be seen eventually. I would have been willing to wait another 14 hours had they seemed like they cared. You could clearly see my swelling getting worse. They did not take any other tests either. If the doctor truly thought there was nothing to be done, why tell me to go sit in the lobby and wait to be seen again when I arrived? Why tell me they could drain my tooth abscess or something and then turn around and say they can't do anything? It was cruel. It felt like a punishment for coming back. What makes me upset is how they treated me when I arrived in the ambulance and gossiping about why I came back to the hospital? I have a suspicion they thought i wanted more pain medication but again i never once asked for it and it was given to me instinctively by the doctors who had seen me during my first visit. Why would I sit and cry and wait in an ER room if i wasn't genuinely needing help? I went home with my face like a balloon and worried I wouldn't see tomorrow. Worse ER ever.. read more

I am 20 years old and have been charged 6 times because 4 different nurses couldn't find a vein after I asked them countless times "give me water or ice I'm dehydrated" make things worse I asked for a itemized receipt NEVER GOT ONE had to get billing and collections to send me one 4 months later if your about to die or in pain go to covenant trust me they make sure you have a nice visit 20 years old paying over $5,000 in medical debt after the experience I had if it was worse They should've just put me down read more

If I could give a ZERO I WOULD DO SO. This ER's wait time is ridiculous. My 62 year old Mother fell from a 7 ft ladder, passed out twice, regained consciousness went to THIS ER and all they did was take her vitals and did ONE blood test during her 9 hour wait time. They ONLY took her vitals over the course of the 9-10 hours. They continuously used the phrase " we ARE the ONLY Level 1 Trauma Center around"...the average wait time is 10 + hours... My Mother left and went to my sister's home. I flew my Mom back home to Los Angeles and had her seen at Kaiser. She was diagnosed with a T11& -T12 fracture from a second CT scan, given dilaudid, morphine, a back brace, and follow up appts. her ER wait was less than 1 hour. Now my sister is 16 weeks pregnant, feeling a stabbing pain when she walks or stands and has only had her "vitals" take during her 7-hour wait... they HAVENT EVEN hooked her up to a FETAL monitor to ensure the baby is alright. I had triple bypass on February 5th, 2019. Dr Paone was superb. The entire staff on floor 5 and 6 were incredible. The nurses and nurses assistants were so kind and understanding. Even during my walks in the halls, everyone I walked past encouraged me. The cafeteria staff and cleaning staff were also very cordial. If by all means you can avoid this place do. The ER is ran by a bunch of idiots that are basically just living off the scamming of all insurance companies out there they take patients in irregardless of their capabilities or capacities they make them sit in the waiting room for over 10 hours. People literally walk out with IV Stubbs in their arm cause they're tired of waiting, but yet I'm sure they still bill the government and all the other major heath insurance. This is also a county hospital which means it gets taxpayers money to run efficiently and the only answer you can get is Lubbock has outgrown the two hospitals that we have. I have a background in operations and utilization of manpower. To see two people sit at a counter, taking an insurance information that I haven't seen a patient in over six hours is a waste of manpower to me the fact that I have three paid RNs to sit at a desk while an LPN goes around and takes vital signs once every four hours people can die in four hours like I said, do not go to the hospital. Stellar service. My dad got into a bad accident an hour away and was immediately transported to University Medical Center in Lubbock. Surgical ICU and the geriatric unit treated him well. Top service! Two days after he was discharged and returned to Oklahoma, they called to see how he was doing, ironically while was sitting at his doctor's office waiting over an hour to be seen for a follow-up. The nursing staff see a need, and they get right on it. My mother and I had to drive from Oklahoma to Lubbock, and we got in around 1am in the morning. The nurse gave me a list of hotels within a block that offer medical rate discounts for stay. Be sure to ask about the medical rates. We stayed at the La Quinta Inn only a couple blocks away. We were greeted with a cheerful smile, and we got a room right away even without a reservation - at 1 in the morning! Lubbock Texans have been outstanding. I'm very grateful. The second time we returned to visit dad after his surgery, we slept in his room. There was only one reclinable bed. The nurse immediately ran to the other room to get one for my mom. Very attentive. Also, keep in mind that the University Medical Center is adjacent to the Texas Tech University side of the hospital. Be sure you know which side you're supposed to be on. Sometimes people will tell you to enter where the double flags are. Well, both sides have double flags. So it can get a little confusing. After you're there for a couple of days, you'll get used to getting around there. The units are interconnected and you can walk through by hallways, but if you don't know where you're going, it can make for a very long walk. However, the friendly patrons can help show you around. You've seen hospitals that just feel sad and glum to be in. UMC is nothing like that. It even feels cheerful at night. Maybe it's the lighting. The parking lot is big and divided by rows A, B, C, D. In the morning the parking lot fills up fast. If you have a handicap sticker on your car, use it. Otherwise, you'll be parking way in the back. They also have a shuttle service from the front entrance to the parking lot. So be sure to remember what row number you're in: C3, D2, etc. It's pretty organized. Security is always present on the facility, not like a police state or anything, but regular security making the rounds. Made me feel much better. Plus, they have a helicopter pad for medivac. My dad's a senior citizen, a military veteran and an out-of-towner, and his care was prime. If you're thinking about University Medical Center for treatment, go for it. read more

I'm losing my sense of humor now. Back in last month for pneumonia. The hospitalist decided I'm on too much insulin. Cut all but my Levemir and cut that in half. Within 48 hours my blood sugar was 400. My infection wasn't going anywhere with those sugars. Very frustrating. read more

Saw a renal transplant patient turn septic right in front of our eyes in this pathetic ER. The patient, a woman and her husband had been in the waiting room for 12 hours when I arrived with my wife, who had a forehead laceration. My wife struck up a conversation with them and discovered really how sick she was. My wife told her husband to demand that someone take her temperature. It was 104! Mind you, this poor woman had no lab work, no IV, nothing! Plus 12 hours of vomiting and shivering in that miserable ER! She was finally admitted....to ICU! This is the most blatant example of nursing malpractice my wife said she has ever seen, after 38 years as an RN. 16 hours later she finally had her laceration repaired. By a medical student. UMC is drastically cutting back the hours of technicians and other staff, PT (who employs most of their techs PRN) in particular has cut all but one tech to no hours. My brother is an elderly gentleman that was brought into UMC emergency center yesterday he was sent home with the IV apparatus still in his arm and when a transportation came to pick him up the lady that was driving ask did y'all not take care of him he was very wet. Horrible experience. Set nine hours in the waiting room. Only blood drawn, bp checked, temp checked. Never saw a doctor and the staff . . . Absolutely unconcerned for the hurting people. I was transferred via ambulance for possible gallbladder problems. I have been in the waiting room for 5 hours. When I finally saw someone to triage me; a nurse administered zofran for nausea and a "pain med" without telling me what exactly it was. She pushed the "pain med" through then told me it was a pain medication I'm not supposed to have. I was told it was no big deal, called a liar the "nurse said she told me twice it was torodol. She did not. After I brought this negligence to another nurses attention; he called the hospital police on me because I couldn't hear him through the mask and window. I have never been treated this way. It's awful that UMC has such a monopoly on Lubbock. I'd rather go home and wait for my gallbladder to burst then sit here in pain for hours on end. Being at UMC ER has been one of the worst healthcare experiences I've ever had. I have been dealing with a chronic illness that drains all of my energy. I am still in the ER, 17 hours after I arrived. I got up several times to ask about the wait. After 12 hours, I got up, became very dizzy and sat down at a chair by check-in. The attendant there told me which chair I could sit in. The security officer approached me and told me to get up. I told him that the lady told me I could sit there and he said, "No she didn't." I started crying and began to have a panic attack. I was very dizzy and I told him I could not get up. He says he's help me and when I reached for help, he said I could get up on my own. I fell to the floor and he told me to stop, and still refused help me. When I couldn't get up, he told me again to get up and said I was a fire hazard. Since I didn't move, he finally brought a wheelchair and very rudely helped me into it. At this point, I was crying and in a huge panic attack. The room was spinning, I felt nauseous, disoriented and my heart felt like it was beating out of my chest. I told him I need help. He scowled and ignored me. Not one worker in the ER showed concern. My panic attack continued for several minutes. After I had settled a bit, I still felt dizzy and my heart was still racing. Maybe I shouldn't have, but I called 9-1-1 to tell them i am in this ER but my heart is racing and I need medical attention. The next thing I know the security guard is yelling at me to get up. I told him I couldn't which was true. He asked one or two more times, and I said I couldn't move (i literally couldn't) but I said, I have a right to be here. He told me this was a place for emergencies. I don't appreciate hospital staff implying that I don't need to be here and that my illness doesn't qualify me to be here. It's unbelievable to me. He told me if I call 9-1-1 again he's going to put me in handcuffs and force me out. He yellled this in front of the entire ER. He is the whole reason I had a panic attack in the first place or I'd never felt I needed to do that. This individual has no business working in a hospital. And just so you know, if your preliminary bloodwork abd blood pressure are good, every person that has any bloodwork or BP that looks worse than yours--not even necessarily life threatening--will go in front of you. It doesn't matter if you have been there for 10 hours already. How long you wait makes no difference to them--it's not even a criteria on who they will call next. If I had to do it all again, I would not come. The only other time I've ever been here was when my son broke his wrist. The wait was still long then (not as. bad) but the worst part was they couldn't find the brace apparatus they needed once we were seen and they kept asking US if we'd seen it. Like we should know where their stuff is located??? It took them over 30 minutes to fine it. I have spent so much time being here but I think it'll be 24 hours or more before I'm seen (not joking) even tho I have a very low cortisol level. The ER said that the hospital is overflowing so they're using ER beds (rooms) for hospital beds. There are patients from other hospitals coming in all the time to fill this one. UMC ER is obviously not able to function well bc of this overflow and the staff (except one very nice nurse) is either uncaring or brutal and horribly unprofessional (security officer). I don't know the security guard's name but he was on duty around 11:30 PM on 6-14-23. Horrible individual. Think several times before coming here. There have to be better options than this. read more
