Whenever I'm down in the area for work, I'll always stop by to pickup food from Umma's. Even the mini portion has a lot of food and I always have leftover. I like their japchae noodles, always order 2 portions of it. I usually get no teriyaki sauce on the chicken but the chicken is still flavorful and delish. Service is always friendly and fast. Found this place thanks to Yelp! Umma's K-BBQ is a great place to get Korean food that tastes like it was home cooked. While the plates are a little pricey (starting at $14.95 for a mini plate of BBQ chicken with rice/cabbage and your choice of two sides), the portions are quite generous. I had so much spicy chicken in my mini plate that I was able to save half for another meal. A regular plate could definitely be split into two meals. If you have a lighter appetite, they also have bowls, which are slightly smaller than the mini plate, starting at $11.95. I was a little worried that the spicy chicken might be too spicy for me, but it had the perfect amount of heat. My husband, who doesn't eat meat, ordered the vegetarian plate, six sides of your choice. They have a lot of sides/banchan to choose from like spicy cucumbers, seaweed salad, macaroni salad, fish cakes, seasoned tofu and chap chae. You can choose white rice, brown rice, cabbage or a half/half (no extra charge for brown rice). This is pretty much a takeout spot but there are tables outside where you can eat. My wife discovered this place a month or two ago, and brought home some take-away back then. I thought the food tasted really good, still fresh even for takeaway, decided to try it out in person this time. The place is located in small shopping center with quite limited parking and which appears to get pretty filled up at the peak lunch hour. However, during the weekends, everything is very quiet and parking is not a problem. This K-BBQ place is basically a takeaway shop where you enter and go straight the counter, place and pay for your order, then either stand around and wait to-go order, or go outside to the free-seating outdoor patio area and wait for your name to be called. What I really like about this place is that there is a large variety of Banchan (side appies) offerings to choose from, and all the proteins that you order are cooked to order, so they come out hot and fresh. And not to mention, the portions are very generous! Yes, it sounds a bit pricey, but even for a good sized guy like me, I could not finish the entire lunch order at one sitting and was able to continue enjoying the leftover at dinner time. My wife ordered the Spicy Chicken and Spicy Pork Combo and I ordered the Chicken Katsu and Fish Jun Combo.....which comes with a base and choice of 4 Banchans (sides)......I ordered cabbage as my base and the chapchae clear noodles, fishcake, macaroni, and beansprout. Wow! Everything was absolutely fresh, tasted so yummy, and wasn't salty at all. Quick disclaimer, this review is based on one short visit during lunch, so take it with a grain of salt. I have a feeling I'll be trying this place out again when I happen to be in the office. So this joint looks like a small mom and pop shop in a little strip mall with a small outdoor dining section. The inside is clean and simple with I think just one table, but there's shaded seating outside so that's not a problem at all. The lady at the cash register was nice, and, as a bonus, did call the chef "umma" so definitely a well named location =) I ordered a spicy pork bowl with jap chae and seasoned tofu. Spicy Pork - This was good. It tastes exactly how it looks in the pictures. If you've had this anywhere else, you won't be surprised by the flavor profile. It was tender, well marinated, well cooked, so no complaints. Solid for the price in the area. Brown Rice- Rice was also good. Brown rice has a tendency to be too hard at a lot of take out places but theirs was pleasant. It definitely had the texture that brown rice is supposed to but wasn't dry or hard at all, and definitely not too moist or mushy. Again, can't complain. Jap Chae and Seasoned Tofu - Funnily enough, I can't actually remember much about the Jap Chae even though I just had it a few hours ago. This is a mixed sign, since for me that means it wasn't good enough to really stand out, but also wasn't bad since I definitely remember when that happens. I actually messed up the seasoned tofu and I poured the sauce onto the rice (force of habit), so this part of the review might be a bit unfair, but I don't think I'd get the seasoned tofu again. Without the sauce, it's white tofu, very soft, and I think I would have preferred if it was cooked a bit more, maybe with a bit of chew. That said, that's very much a personal preference. Regardless, I think this is a solid spot and reasonably priced for the area. Will be giving it another try at a future date and might update the review at that point if my opinion changes either way. read more

Had a chance to try Umma's for takeout during the holiday season and enjoyed it very much! We tried the kalbi, chicken katsu, and spicy pork plates with an order of soondubu - all very good. The banchan was also delicious - we got cabbage salad, chapchae, fish cake, tofu, seaweed salad, and spicy cucumber. For the meats - everything was so good. The kalbi was my favorite! Beautiful char and flavor, and it was so satisfying ripping the meat off the bones. Next favorite was the chicken katsu - The amount of breading to meat was perfect. The texture on the breading was also very good - crispy, but not to the point of scratching my throat. The sauce that came with the katsu was also very good. The spicy pork was also very tasty and thinly sliced! For the banchan, the chapchae was my favorite, followed by the fish cake. The spicy cucumber was also good, but I felt like it could have been crunchier. The tofu wasn't really seasoned, but we had a bunch of sauce from the proteins that it didn't really matter. My go to is the two protein combo with katsu chicken and spicy chicken. They have the best katsu chicken I have ever had in my life. It's lean, it's juicy, and it's crispy as can be. The katsu sauce is so good you'll lick the container clean. The spicy chicken is perfection! I watched them make it fresh in a pan just for my order. To top it all off, the people that work there are super welcoming and friendly as can be. This is hands down one of my favorite restaurants in Lake Forest. Hell! Umma is located in a small shopping center with McDonald's and Starbucks. The plaza has parking but I can see it being a challenge during prime hours. It is located near the center, close to the outdoor seating area. Because there is no indoor seating, be prepared to either order take out for outdoor dining or to bring home. We got the pleasure of speaking to one of the owners - super helpful, super friendly. I love that Umma has a lot of variety to offer. The kids got BBQ beef bowls that come with 2 sides. If you are expecting authentic Korean food, this is not the place you should be going. I ordered a bowl with meat jun, spicy cucumber and japchae for lunch and was satisfied with the fast service but when I opened the bowl, I realized they got my order wrong. It was a difference between brown rice and white rice, which wasn't a big deal so I didn't take it back. The person who took the order and put the bowl together vs. the person who packaged the meal were different people so it would have been nice if the last person checked before handing it off to me because there was a label clearly printed on the lid that I ordered a brown rice. The spicy cucumber is quite close to the original cucumber kimchi but the japchae could have been more softer and less salty. Also, the meat jun was not seasoned with only salt and pepper, which usually should be but instead it is marinated with some sort of teriyaki sauce, which was sweet. The spicy sauce that came with it was vinegary and just didn't go well with the bowl. There isn't any indoor seating so you have to sit at the court where they have many outdoor seating. The store is clean and neat and has a Korean version of Panda Express vibe because each of the ingredients are in an individual container and you can see through the glass as the clerk is putting your meal together. read more

I love Umma's K-BBQ and especially when I do not feel like cooking. There is almost no seating to eat inside, so we always order do go. It is easy to place a phone order and we just pick up in store. The portion is huge and you definitely get your money worth. The combo always comes with rice, and you can choose up to 4 sides with the 2 meat options. We always like their Korean spinach, very flavorful. I will say though, their food is on the oily side, if that is a concern. Umma's K-BBQ is just 'The Best' that for the last two years for my birthday my husband will drive me to Lake Forest from La Palma so I can get my fix for their fantastic Meat Jun and their spectacular sides. Came here recently for lunch and used my gift card from the Lake Forest Shop and Dine gift card program. The cashier was really friendly and helpful, definitely one of the highlights of my visit. I also utilized the Yelp Check-In for a free drink. I ended up ordering two regular plates (entree, white rice, and four sides): Beef Jun with 2x Japchae, Spicy Cucumbers, and Fishcake and Chicken Katsu with the same sides. For both, it was a little over $40, but similar to what other reviews have shared, the portion sizes are large and were easily two meals per plate. The store definitely had a family owned vibe to it and I also want to support local. Each plate came with sauces, and I was offered additional sauces when I picked up my order. Foodwise, I must admit I was a bit disappointed. One of the main things that stood out to me was the white rice, for some reason it was dry and had some hard chunks in it, which I definitely did not expect and put a damper on my meal. Spicy cucumbers were good, they had a nice crunch to them, the spice was mild, and were refreshing to eat. The fishcake and japchae both seemed a bit uninspired, not sure if we had a bad batch, but japchae didn't have too much flavor and was not the right consistency/texture, while the fish cake had a hint of flavor, which should not be the case. Meat-wise, the Beef Jun was something new for me, but not something I would order again. It had good flavor, but the meat quality itself was just average. The Chicken Katsu was a lot better, with the breading having great texture, while not being too heavy, and the chicken being juicy and accompanied great by the katsu sauce. Overall, I would rate this place 3.5/5 stars, but rounded up to 4 stars because of the friendly service and wanting to support local businesses. I have definitely heard great things about this place from friends, so I will be coming back again and hopefully have a better experience with the food so I can update my review. read more
