Usually after running errands over the weekends, we try to find a new place for a bite to eat. We searched the Yelp app for a restaurant that had garlic shrimp, since that's what I was craving. That's when we found Da Luau Hawaiian Grill. Just south of Interstate 5 on Jeffrey Rd, you'll find a small shopping center. There is a row of 4-5 small eateries, but at the far end, you'll see Da Luau Hawaiian Grill. The inside of the restaurant is small, but could easily accommodate 30 people at shared tables. It's very clean inside and has seating at tables or bench seats along the wall. The menu consists of various Hawaiian-inspired dishes. I personally was craving garlic shrimp. I asked for garlic rice as well, but asked them to hold the onions. My husband had a spam and eggs meal. We also couldn't forget to add shaved ice to our order because we wanted something sweet and refreshing for dessert. The shrimp was delicious and did not have an overpowering fishy flavor. The garlic sauce was slightly sweet, which was quite refreshing. I was expecting something with more of a garlicky flavor, but this had hints of other spices combined for a unique flavor. I really enjoyed my meal! I'm glad that I came here with an open mine. I noticed that many of the reviews for Da Luau Hawaiian Grill were mixed. i stop by here every now and then whenever i'm craving a fish and rice combo that isn't poke. i usually go for a build-your-own platter with mahi mahi, rice, and potato mac salad. the mac salad is super thick and creamy, almost a little too much. it's good for a few bites, but getting a full side of it can feel like overkill. i made the mistake today when i thought i would want more than one scoop; won't be doing that again. the mahi mahi is cooked really well and the seasoning is great, but it can get a bit salty after a few bites, so it definitely needs their sweet sauce to balance it out. the restaurant itself is pretty spacious with plenty of seating, and it's never been busy any time i've gone. it's not the most vegetarian-friendly restaurant, but there's at least a decent amount of fish options for a pescatarian like me. read more

I had a craving for loco moco so I decided to try this place. Pretty good and pretty good value. I'm admittedly not an expert in loco moco, but I thought this one was pretty good. I liked the various options you have such as hamburger, sausage, spam, or a combo. There's also a choice of white rice, brown rice, or noodles. I tried the combo. The portion was good and it definitely hit the spot. But to be a little picky, the hamburger was a bit overcooked and tough. Indeed, I think they used too lean a cut. But eggs were cooked perfectly. I ordered the rice noodles thinking it would be a Hawaiian-style dish, but what I got was honestly confusing. It looked and tasted like Korean glass noodles (like japchae noodles) simply mixed with soy sauce--no real flavor, no vegetables, no toppings, nothing that felt like an actual dish. It was pretty disappointing and awkward because it didn't match the description at all. If you're expecting something similar to Hawaiian-style rice noodles, this is definitely not it. Nevertheless, I love restaurants like this place just for existing and offering up this type of delicious food. This place is simple and an easy place to try out and enjoy Hawaiian food. I do recommend the Veggie Omelette. It has a simple, solid flavor with fresh veggies. If it's your first time, and you're a meat eater, I suggest you try the adobo rice omelette. Tasty. The Loco Moco is okay...I'm gonna be honest and say it's not the best we've had (taste, quality and portion/price) because we have our own go-to Hawaiian restaurant in South LA County that just exceeds everyone else, but c'mon, this place is good. If you're not an extremely picky eater, you're gonna enjoy it just fine. The service is okay--not exactly super friendly and welcoming, but I'm an introvert, it's not necessary for me as long as the service isn't super rude...which it isn't. We used to come here a lot for breakfast and brunch. The food and service was good. I was in the plaza and saw them and wanted to try them out for dinner. I got the 2 item plate - with chicken Katsu and the bbq beef. My sides were white rice and the "Asian coleslaw" & got 2 spam musubi's for breakfast the next day. My order was ready really quick. Which isn't always a good thing. It tells me, that the proteins are pre-cooked and are warmed up upon ordering, thats my guess. Got home and was kinda disappointed seeing what I got. The chicken in the katsu has been pounded to the same thinness of a penny. The beef, is fatty w/ tendons and tough (likely due to the re-cook). Most of the beef was not edible. I just ate what I could and had the spam musubi. The coleslaw was bone dry and had cilantro (I don't do cilantro) so I tossed that completely in the trash. I was thinking more traditional coleslaw. There's a lot of competition for Hawaiian food in Irvine, Da Luau wont make the cut for me (as far as dinner is concerned). read more

Although the flavor was still good the texture was not. The island style chicken was good and the Mac as well. I also picked up a side of BBQ chicken which was nicely done. The young man behind the counter was pleasant to work with and he even brought my order out to me. So I do appreciate the service. As for ambiance I didn't stay to eat there, but it was quiet inside and not a lot of people. It seemed like a number of people were just picking up. I shared the plate with my partner, and we were pretty full by the end of it. The chicken katsu quality is okay. It looks like some pieces were fried better than other, while other pieces looked like they were cut and then refried. The mac salad and rice were good! Mac salad is definitely more of the rich and creamy side than most. The spam musubi was also good, and pretty typical/standard to other spots. Their BBQ beef bowl is terrible. Meat is very chewy. It was too dry to swallow, so I ended up throwing it away.

We used to get Hawaiian BBQ all the time when they opened, until two times meats were burned, wrote a review and tried one more time and still burned issues not resolved, then we stopped coming. Today, family wanted Hawaiian BBQ, thought given Da Luau a chance, hopping after all these years, it should be improved by now. It was a phone order and made a clear that please make sure no burnt on meats. We ordered two combo ( beef and chicken ) and one with chicken: * See how much we had to cut off burnt pieces ( see picture ). I know somebody likes the burnt cuz it gives a smoke favour, but if it tastes bitter, it was burnt * Beef and chicken flavoured are good, one star * Add more one star for macaroni and cheese * Beef can be little more tender It is so easy to resolve the burn issues, just clean the grill often, I suggested when I wrote my first review, but I guess the message didn't get crossed ..... Hopefully, they can fix the burn issues right away. We love Island Special " we called beef and chicken combo for this dish " and will go back once the cancer's issue is resolved. read more

This is my family's go-to when we visit OC. This is one of the few places in SoCal that serve meat jun just like they make it Hawaii :) It's a casual spot where you order and then sit. Staff has always been friendly. The plaza is nice and lots of parking. They also have a clean restroom. We love their kalbi and chicken katsu, always freshly cooked. Met a coworker here for lunch as she knew I am a local girl born and raised in the islands and although I go home every 2 months, I still get homesick! All the meats were marinated well and delicious , you have the option to choose a side I went with rice and Mac salad. It comes with so much meat that I wanted 2 scoops of rice instead of 1. The chicken katsu was pretty disappointing. It was dry and tough. Some pieces seemed like they were fried twice as the sides were dark instead of the white chicken. I tried their combo with 3 meats. The meat seemed to have all been pre cooked and heated back up when I ordered because it was hot when I received my order, but it was all burnt or over cooked. The katsu chicken was so over cooked that it was just rock hard. The ribs was actually good but there was only 3 small pieces. More than half the beef was burnt. Like the edges were just black cause it was burnt. Got two sides of Mac salad which I typically love but the disappointment in the meat threw me over the edge and I couldn't enjoy the Mac salad. I put the food to the side and tried eating it about 30 minutes later and it was just as bad. For the first time, I threw away Hawaiian BBQ. I have gone to a number of other Hawaiian BBQ spots and never once threw away my food. I literally didn't even eat a quarter of the food. Nearly $21 wasted. read more

It makes me so sad to write this review since this place has been a family staple of mine since high school! We ordered takeout today and our Poke bowl was not fresh at all, the dressing was changed (this used to be our favorite dish here) and everything had a strange, almost rancid aftertaste. The Kalbi plate had ribs that were all nearly burnt. The only saving grace was the rice but that was about it. I truly hope we just caught them on an off day and this isn't a regular standard for their quality! There are much better poke places around that are make-your-own that are much fresher than this, but for now we won't be coming back. I'm heartbroken. read more
