Don't bank here. I was looking for a good small local bank to use for my small business in Portland. They are absolutely not it. I consistently had difficulties accessing their online system (which is almost useless even when its working) and no one at the Hawthorne location could help claiming that help with business accounts could only be done on the phone. I've spent countless hours on the phone to access my account to no avail. I finally left the bank and started a new business account at another bank. When I went to reach out to Umpqua about accessing my old information for my yearly taxes, they were cooperative on the phone and sent me my records a couple weeks later along with a bill for 120 dollars for sharing my records with me. No fee was ever discussed with me. This place is a small businessman's nightmare. Steer clear. read more

Do not bank here, no matter the circumstances. No matter what they tell you. It's staff are incompetent, ignorant about basic facts of their own profession and mildly xenophobic. I honestly had a banker argue with me when I told I was hoping to convert a sum of money to Canadian dollars well ahead of a relocation, because the USD is falling. To be clear she didn't argue that it was a bad idea, she argued that the US dollar was dropping at all, 'cause "the USA is the best". (spoiler the USD been in a gentle fall for over a year.) She also asked "Why would you move to Canada?" as if i had said I was planning to move to East St. Louis. Fast forward, we have relocated and need to transfer the proceeds of our house sale up here. I had told the the bank that I was leaving and asked if I needed to arrange anything prior to my move, to allow the proceeds from our house sale to be wired up here. "Nope you're all good" was the assurance. So we cross the border, quarantine for two weeks and we are ready to bring the funds with us for a house purchase. The bank tells me I need to wire funds, I need to sign in person, In. The. USA. To be clear, we are over a year in to a global pandemic and this bank can't figure out how to use online notaries to transfer obvious house proceeds (which we closed on from out of the country) I had to write myself a personal check for enough money to buy a house, which is now sitting on hold, in my Canadian bank for 21 days, jeopardising my closing date AND losing value in the exchange rate rate at about $4,000 /week...because, guess what? The US dollar is falling. read more

The only reason I haven't switched to a closer bank is because of the staff. Every single person I've interacted with here is an angel! Helpful, charming, and they always remember me. Remember when I was sick, ask about how my vacation went, comment on my hair changes, etc. This bank stopped being convenient when I moved houses, but I refuse to switch to a different one. My husband and I have been faithful Umpqua customers since we moved to Oregon almost 3 years ago. I have bragged to everyone about how much I loved this bank- the interest rates, the cookies, the awesome debit card design that I'm always getting compliments on, etc. Even when our interest rate was lowered from 1.5% to 0.5% a while ago, we let it slide because we really loved banking with Umpqua. However, on December 23, 2013 we received a letter (as many people did I'm sure) referencing my husband's debit card and letting us know he would be issued a new one soon because of the Target data breach. The letter assured us: "We will be issuing you a new debit card...that you will receive in the mail. You may continue to use your current card until the new one arrives. After your card arrives, we'll deactivate your old card." Last Friday my husband went to withdraw money from an Umpqua ATM and it ate his card. He went into the branch to find out what the problem was, and they told him that not only was his debit card deactivated with no warning, even after assuring us it would not be until we activated a new card, but mine was as well. To add insult to injury, the woman at the bank could not tell him when the new card was shipped or when we might expect it to arrive. Yesterday I called Umpqua to see if I could get more information. I found out that our cards were mailed on December 30th to the address on file (where we live) and there was no expected delivery date and no reason for the 3 week shipping time or lack of tracking so we might know when to expect our cards. For a bank to cancel both mine and my husband's debit cards with ZERO advance warning (especially mine, for which I did not even receive a letter letting me know I would be receiving a new one) is completely unacceptable and one of the worst offenses I have ever heard of a bank committing. The woman I spoke to on the phone verified my email, phone number and address were correct, ensuring there were THREE ways for Umpqua to alert us that our debit cards would be canceled (even after receiving a letter assuring us they would not be). I am completely dumbfounded as to how a bank could commit such a serious error. Sad to say it after almost 3 great years but we are moving our accounts this weekend. Update after my previous review. Had the nice reply above, which I appreciate, and the next time I went into my branch, one of the employees remembered me by name and was kind enough to give me her card with the direct line on it. I greatly appreciated this gesture as well. I would have taken advantage of this for this next issue, however it involved a fraudulant charge so I called for the fraud dept. Had to hold for another extreme amount of time, this time to the fraud center, rather than to customer service. Seems to be systemic. Then have the call center kid talk over me when I complained about the wait and that I wanted to be transferred to the supervisor to file a complaint about the wait time. He then made the observation that I had said if I was put on hold again (after he put me on hold once already...perhaps my leading with a complaint about long hold times didn't sink in,) that I would be switching banks and to be connected to a supervisor would involve being put on hold. Correct. While I have few assets in the bank, I still appreciate a modicum of customer service. I also appreciate never having a call center employee repeatedly talk over me. The supervisor was much more helpful and unlike his underling didn't make me shake with frustration, but was helpful. Tomorrow the new bank search begins. read more

I love banking with Umpqua, I have just run into the same consistent issues with bank tellers at every branch. 1. The bank tellers find it appropriate to ask me where I get so much cash when I deposit my tips from my serving job, which is rude and intrusive. 2. Every time I come to deposit a check in-person, it seems like an inconvenience to the teller and i am told I could use the app to do this. I prefer to deposit my checks in person, and I'm not sure why doing their jobs is so inconveniencing to them. read more

I opened an account with Umpqua two years ago after my last bank (one of the big national banks) started charging all sorts of fees (to have an account, to use the account, to walk in their branches...) Since the beginning, I have been very happy with the personal and friendly service that I received. I also don't get charged ridiculous fees for just having an account. It's the little things...! My dog loves to go with me Hawthorne branch because he gets a dog treat and lots of attention. I, meanwhile, am partial to the cookies on Friday mornings. read more

I've left a review for Umpqua before, but this has reached a new level so I've decided to leave another one. I am under 18 and have an account co signed by my parents at Umpqua, and they will not let me have a debit card. I've made this work for the past couple of years, doing most of my transactions trough PayPal and Venmo. Today I opened my online banking login to see that UMPQUA LITERALLY WITHDREW $125 FROM MY ACCOUNT WITH ZERO WARNING OR NOTICE. The reason stated was "excessive withdrawal charge". I was not once warned that this was even a thing, and I am incredibly furious and fed up with this sad excuse of a bank. Do yourself a favor and stay far far away. read more

If I could give this Bank zero Stars I would! This bank has serious problems! On multiple occasions the account balance was incorrect on the mobile app! At times stating you have $0 when you have thousands of dollars! The mobile app is constantly updating and unavailable, or just simply doesn't work! I cancel my bounce protection because of discrepancies in billing problems from a Comcast service that I no longer have. They allowed the Chargers to go through anyway on a debit card that I cancelled 6 months ago! To make it even worse, the charges were allowed to process through my closed account a day after I close my account with Umpqua ! I tried on numerous occasions to communicate with them about the problem, but they just gave me the runaround! Clearly they are all about making a buck! Pretty expensive cookies that they having in the lobby! I highly recommend staying away from this Bank! read more

Watch out if your balance is zero for only 10 days they will automatically close your account without informing you. Even if you have an account that doesn't require a minimum balance. The employees are friendly but the practices of the corporate bank aren't very customer friendly. I was a customer for 6 years and that still didn't matter. The worst part is I still have direct deposits coming in after they didn't inform me of the closure. I think I will stick with my community credit union instead of trying to reopen the account, because who knows when they might just close it on me again. read more

The manager at this location is very unprofessional and a poor example of customer service. He does not seem like a people person at all, he is monotone, shows little expression and seems unhappy with his job or life. Personally, I believe that if you work in customer service you need to be upbeart and friendly, and even if you are having a bad day you can't let it show to customers. I met with this manager and he gave me his card. I called him a few days later, he didn't answer so I left a message asking him to give me a call back. He never called back. Then a week later I recieved a generic email from Umpqua denying my request. If that wasn't unprofessional enough to just send me a denial email instead of calling me back and treating me like a person, I recieved THREE more identical rejection emails over the next few weeks! Shockingly rude and horrible customer service. Will never do business with this company, ever. read more
