My wife and I were on our way to Kentucky for a family Thanksgiving get together and Mansfield was about half way on the 16 hour drive so we decided to stay there for a night. We like to try local places when we travel, as opposed to chain restaurants, and are very glad we found this spot. It's on the small side, cozy and warm. Friendly and high energy staff. It's a long narrow room, a few tables in the front of the house, bar to the left (with table place settings on it) and a divider separating that from a row of booths and 2-tops to the right. We opted to sit at the bar. Only two waitresses serving the whole place and they did a great job - especially Fritzy who took care of us. Friendly, efficient and constantly in motion. Now this is not a white tablecloth kind of place. It's a pub, a local and family friendly place, and as that it's definitely 5 star. (a family of 6 was waiting for a table as we walked in). Drinks were solid. I like hamburgers and I really like Rubens so of course I had to order the Ruben hamburger. What a genius combination! My wife ordered their risque'ly named naked in the park dinner - slices of rib eye over home fries with cheese and peppers and onions. Excellent! About half way through our dinner a guy came in and sat down at a seat at the bar next to us. After a bit we fell into conversation. He is a life long resident of Mansfield and has been coming to Uncle Johns since he was a kid. His 8 year old is a pasta fanatic, his 16 year old not so much. He likes to come by once or twice a week. Tonight he was there to catch a quick bite (not that we were judging but it was soup and salad) before going to an Elks meeting. Kind of guy you like to have in your community and Uncle John's is his kind of place. If, like us, your passing trough Mansfield definitely consider Uncle John's. read more

The burger was great, nice pungent fresh red onion slices and fresh mixed greens that mixed perfectly with the Gorgonzola. The house made balsamic vinegar glaze on the burger was something special. I was a little sad that they didn't have the special menu with the crab cakes on it while we were there, but I did find some good alternatives. It was lunch after all. I did try the Alaskan IPA that I hadn't seen elsewhere. I got the chicken salad and my teen got the Rueben. They were both really good. I loved the ambience of the place. Wow. Just wow. I swung off the highway for, essentially, a snack. I wanted something fast, but better than fast food. A quick search revealed this place, and with a name like that, since I was listening to the Dead and on my way to visit an ailing Deadhead friend, I had to stop in. It is a pretty small bar/diner in downtown Mansfield. Pretty slick neon sign outside, cozy wood inside. Plenty of light near the front, but in general a slightly dark, homey place. Service was excellent start to finish, though they were busy. Lots of interesting burgers and sandwiches on the menu, plus salads; I had the reuben burger. It could have been blah. It could have been fine, but unremarkable. It was, instead, one of the best burgers I've ever had. Great bun, great burger, great corned beef (and plenty of it, but not enough to make the whole thing fall apart,) great sauteed kraut, great dressing. Every bit was good in itself, and combined into an amazing whole that almost had me moaning. I looked forward to every bite, and was sad when it was gone. For $7.50, this burger was 10 times better than a $5 Big Mac, and bigger besides. It's not exactly in my neck of the woods but I am trying to find an excuse to come back. read more

Whenever I'm visiting a new place and trying out a new restaurant, I like to try whatever dish the menu calls out as their signature dish. I figure that has to be the dish they will ya e the most pride in, and is usually the best dish on the menu. Well, here, it's Uncle John's Fried Chicken. I don't know Uncle John, but I bet he's a nice guy. Probably pulls magical nickels from behind little kids ears and gives it to them, and I imagine he's the kind of guy who would stop and jumpstart a stranger's car when in need. (At least that's what my Uncle John was like growing up.) But based on my experience last night, either the cook who made my fried chicken is angry at me for some reason, or fried chicken at Uncle John's is famous for being lame af. I'm fortunate enough to live in the foodie Mecca of the West Coast, Southern California, where we can get any style of food on the planet and some of the best restaurants in the country. But when I kindly let my waitress at Uncle John's know that my fried chicken was clearly not fresh and lacking the necessary spices to qualify as actual fried chicken worth paying for, she doubted my judgement by telling me "no one has ever complained about the fried chicken". Followed by admitting very little seasoning is ever used on their fried chicken, and trying to convince me the chicken was not frozen prior to being cooked, which was very obviously not the truth. Seeing as how Mansfield Ohio is to culinary arts what Aleppo is to quality of life, I'm gonna chalk up the local consensus on Uncle Johns Famous Fried Chicken to wildly unqualified feedback from people who are sadly more accustomed to mediocre fare than they are 5 star meals. Uncle John's doesn't seem like a terrible place at all, but it's bad form to question a diner's polite displeasure with a meal instead of just kindly offering something else on the menu instead. (Which was done but after questioning me repeatedly nearly to the point of making me want to get up and walk out.) Fried chicken requires proper seasoning, and the skin should be made with love not with hate. RIP to the poor chicken who had to die only to end up abused in that kitchen. You coulda been a contendah, kid. I can deal with the occasional bad dish, but not being treated like that. Someone call Uncle John. Let him know. read more

On a business trip between meetings in Columbus and Cleveland, I made a side trip for lunch. The signature Hot Pepper Salad is amazing - Hot! as advertised. I also got the well reviewed Cheese Steak Cheeseburger with recommended fries. Awesome sandwich - I had to take the second half off the bun to ensure I got the most of the good stuff. Fries are just okay in my book. I sat at the bar as a single on a timeline. Staff were great! Happy and efficient - and for me that says a lot! Decent beer list and I chose a local brew. Wine list - not so much, but I'm a self-avowed wine bigot so no surprise. Well worth the couple of miles off of I-70 to reach this local icon. read more

My server was nice. Very pleasant and professional. However, the woman with the natural short gray hair working behind the bar took exception to the fact that I ordered a bottle of Chimay beer and let it be known multiple times to other servers within earshot of me like I was some sort of Big City snob for ordering a beer off of the restaurant's own menu. Her snide remarks were very unprofessional and rude. Be sure to order a Miller Lite to keep her happy (BTW I drink Miller Lite all the time). She needs to be fired. read more

Great little stop on the way home. Saw this restaurant on Yelp and it had great reviews. Also I just became an Elite today so I had to celebrate with a fun spot. The place reminded me of an old diner and it was right on the square of the little town. Great view eating food by the window. We got the fried button mushrooms first which were breaded perfectly and tasted great with ranch. He ordered the Italian Stallion which was a burger with pastrami and Swiss cheese and various other toppings and mozzarella stickers and I got the Reuben burger. Basically the food came out quick and very large in portion. It was greasy and perfect and tasty. We are currently in a food coma but got to walk some of it off in the cute square of the town. read more

I had the Ruben burger, My wife had the sirloin steak. Both of which were cooked perfectly. The sirloin steak definitely needed some seasoning and flavor. It is literally a grilled chunk of meat. But honestly that's what we were after :-) The Reuben burger was outstanding! Outstanding! My friend and I went here for lunch on a recommendation from a lovely young lady at Kingwood Center. Wow. We both ended up having the special burger. I cannot remember the name of it, but it had bacon and....bacon jam. It was heavenly. The greens on the burger her perfect and light compared to this very substantial burger. A small group of friends and I came into Uncle John's Place before heading to Blood Prison at the Reformatory. Everyone in the group was digging the whiskey burger. I believe half of our group ordered this. They even made a substitution for someone who didn't eat beef--put in crispy chicken. The others had the BLT and the rib sandwich. There was a ton of food! We also had shared orders of onion rings! All of it was fantastic. The service was great and precations for COVID-19 were taken. Due to the smallness of the inside there was a waiting list at 6pm on a Friday. However, they worked through that list as quickly as they could. I appreciate Bryant stopping at Uncle John's Place for lunch and reviewing because of his review when I got finished picking blueberries I suggested to my coworker and her son that we check out Uncle Johns. We arrived on Saturday afternoon around 1:45 and the restaurant was very busy with a few booth tables open and a few barstools open. After Bryant's review I knew I had to ask about the special burger and I am glad that I did, I ordered it a burger with Jalapenos, bacon, pepperjack cheese and more and it was delicious. I also ordered fries and they were nicely cooked, but lacking any seasoning. Service was good. Next time I am in Mansfield I will be checking out Uncle Johns. read more

The quaint and inviting atmosphere reminds one of the Neighborhood gathering places of the 1940s Where one could enjoy a casual bite and a brew amongst other fun loving patrons . The place is usually crowded and the seating is rather tight owing to the confines of the buildings Superstructure. Tables seat either two or four guests , and are scattered throughout the building . Although there is no dedicated restaurant parking area , Street Parking is available , as is a nearby parking lot . Most everything on the menu is delicious , so you can't really go wrong with any selection that you choose. All in all a popular dining place with a past history of delivering fine food and excellent service ! I don't review things often but this one is worth the time I'll save you. I'll keep it simple, myself and a colleague went in here for lunch during the week and had philly cheesesteaks with french fries. First the philly had very LITTLE meat on it and it tasted like onion on bread. Second, the fries were a big heap of grease causing them to all lump together and be a big ball of potatoes and grease, gross. After we left we both agreed that we should have just paid the bill and not eaten the food and gone elsewhere. We will never make that mistake again. read more
