Firstly, kids would probably enjoy this trip. It was the Thursday trip featuring kids "entertainment, face painting, etc." The train itself is impressive! Two open air cars, four closed cars and the locomotive. One of the enclosed cars had a small wooden dance floor and assorted bamboo furniture. Another featured a cantina of sorts selling sandwiches ($5), sodas ($2) and snacks ($1). The other car had art deco lighting, wooden seating - very picturesque and one car seemed like being on Amtrak complete with freezing A/C. You can walk from car to car freely. At one point we moved because it got waaaay too noisy with all the kids. Secondly, if you've ridden Amtrak or trains in Europe and Asia (heck even BART), this train will seem like a snail's pace in comparison. It doesn't move very fast, but this allows you to enjoy the open fields and some of the Sacramento river. Honestly, I don't know if kids really look outside the window, they just like being on a train. It would have been nice if we were given some sort of handout explaining what we were viewing or the history of the train/tracks, the route we were taking, points of interest, etc. A simple two-sided copied piece of paper would have been fine. Since I used to face paint at one of my jobs, I was a little surprised at the face painting here. I find it easier to use face paints, a good brush and some body glitter. Instead, it looked like liquid eyeliner and pencil eyeshadow was used. Not only does that take longer to do your job, but the effect isn't as nice. Oh, and no one actually got their face painted, but were convinced that it "would look nicer" on their hand or arm. Where this really gets my three stars (as opposed to four) is when we reached the final destination, no one told us to disembark. I knew they had to switch the engine around and there was talk of adding a second engine on to repair (?) so when the train stopped, I waited. Another party also sat around. About 20 minutes later (!!!) we decided that we could probably walk to our car - hey it's Woodland, can't be that complicated. We then found out that we WERE at where we started but no one told us. Everyone - except the people in our car - had already left, gotten in their cars and were practically out of the lot. You couldn't tell from where we were seated that we had arrived. The staff themselves - which in this case was the owner, his wife and their two kids - were very personable. The wandering guitar-playing musician (imagine if Maria Von Trapp emigrated to the US and couldn't retire) had me humming "I've Been Working on the Railroad" all day. So in a nutshell, I would probably not go again if I had to pay full price. The only reason I would go again is because daughter liked it and wants to do it again. I would also sneak a flask on board.

For the most part the wine pours were generous though there was one station just outside of the open cars that decided that their wine was worth one ticket per one ounce pour. My thinking was if you have people that have paid $60 to try your wines don't treat them like you're at BevMo. We are your target audience. So we avoided that station and the rest were quite good. My suggestion would be to check how many people are on the train as best you can. The train yesterday had around 80 to 90 people and it was beautiful. Plenty of room to relax have a quiet conversation just taken the environment beautiful. The staff said anywhere up to 200 people on the train is still relatively comfortable but once it gets towards maximum capacity 250 - 300 it gets really hard to move around and I could see why. The passages between cars is wide enough for one person. Natural bottle necks. All in all it was a good trip and one that I'm looking forward to doing it again with more friends.

We took a Capital Tuk-Tuk ride on Friday night. What a fun way to kick off our weekend…read more Tuk-Tuks are three wheeled, motorized vehicles commonly found in Southeast Asia. They are super convenient to pop in and out of the Tuk-Tuk because there's no doors or windows. (Of course you need to put your seat belts on.) The Tuk-Tuk size is smaller than a car and quick bursts of speed make the ride exciting, especially when motorcycles zooming by us when we were crossing the Tower Bridge. But the ride is also relaxing, when the winds blowing in our faces . The Tuk-Tuk has a capacity to carry 6 people. So it's very roomy for the four of us. Manushi was our Murals Sacramento tour guide and she was amazing. We saw so many murals we would not noticed before. My daughter said that she walked many times around the building where Johnny Cash mural is located and ate dumplings at one end of the said building. But she never noticed the Johnny Cash mural before. After Manushi pointed out the first few murals to us, then we started to pay attention to the areas around us and started to notice all those beautiful murals. And those different styles of painting on those electrical boxes! Manushi shared with us the history of some of the murals or names of some of the famous people featured. She also told us about her experiences when she encountered some of the artists either as a tourist on her Tuk-Tuk or in the midst of their paintings. I appreciated those stories and was feeling the moments of her excitements. We learned a lot and laughed a lot during the tour. It's a fun and informative tour, great way to see downtown/ midtown and experience the full breath of the city for the locals and visitors alike. It helped us to exploring the city and seeing the local businesses particularly the restaurants and cultural events such as the Wide Open Walls, an annual festival that brings together local, national, and international artists to paint large-scale public art. We all felt like the tour reignited our desire to do more arts!! We ended the tour with ice cream treats at LILUTLANTS, Gourmet Hawaiian Shave Ice. Cherry on top.

An older white male employee immediately turned around and began watching the security cameras. We were the only customers in the store, yet he did not ask if we need any help or assistance. As a black customer, the situation felt unsettling. We came in with no bags and were simply browsing, but the atmosphere made us feel unwelcome and watched. When we decided to leave, the employee still did not acknowledge us or say anything. The entire interaction felt odd and uninviting, and we left feeling as though we were not wanted there because of our race. I hope management addresses customer service and ensures that all guests are treated with respect and courtesy.

Jen provides plenty of detail about the artist and the artist's techniques as well as the WOW festival which occurs in the summer - her husband is also an artist and is working on his own downtown mural! However, as Jen says, many of the artists won't tell you what the mural is about and prefer to leave it for the viewers to interpret. We went at a pace that was comfortable for us and, between the murals and waiting for crosswalks, there were plenty of stops along the way. The running part was never longer than a 2 minute stretch, but still a great way to work out and get your culture on! There are so many murals you miss driving through downtown in your car. It's a great way to be a tourist in your own city and learn to appreciate Sac and it's burgeoning downtown. Jen was really nice and I'm definitely going to bring some other friends and visitors on this tour! PS there are walking tours available for those averse to running! :P

This review is not for the campground, as there seems to be no direct profile for the Lake area…read moreitself. This is more for the water/lake access. We came here on a Sunday around 9:30am and met up with some friends. Like how they have a large parking area and it's extremely close to working restrooms and the walk from the parking lot to the water is very close. The lake access area is primarily coarse/rough rocks and sand. Make sure to bring your water shoes. Upon arriving there were so many geese. Heads up, if you go in the morning the geese come and there are tons of geese poop everywhere! Minus a star for this. It was extremely gross. But overall the area is a great spot for a fun relaxing lake day. There is a $12 parking fee. Cash or contactless payment works. There are park rangers that patrol around and are VERY strict about alcohol (and trust me they are literally looking at guests areas for any open alcohol) . They give a warning, and make you dump it out and second time they catch you get fined.

But this review is about some more recent experiences. I've been camping at Beals since I was 14. I made core memories here. I'll always remember my brother picking up a dewy leaf in the morning and yelling, "Look Jen, real Mountain Dew!" (We are from the Mojave Desert.) A few months back, I saw a sign at Beals saying they were hiring camp hosts, so I put in an application. I know this park better than anyone, most of the good pics on Google are by me, and it would be very convenient for me to stay here for April. Since I had no luck getting hired as a camp host for April (because I start my next paid job in May, and am only available to volunteer for one month at this time), I decided to try to get a reservation. My reservecalifornia account was completely locked out. I drove to the park in person this morning. I said I wanted to stay as many nights as possible in the same site. This is so that I can maximize my time taking care of business and still have time left over to hike and cycle the American River Bike Trail, which is one of my favorite things in the world to do. The camp host informed me quite rudely that he would absolutely not do this for me. I would have to come back every day at 3pm. I asked him why, and he said it's because they get a lot of transients. But this rule doesn't stop transients from camping here. It only makes their life harder by forcing them to check in in person every day and never knowing whether they'll have the same site from night to night. For a woman camping alone, this feels terrorizing. Why can't I reserve three nights on any of the many sites that are currently available? I asked the camp host if there was anywhere I could do this in person. He lied and said no. After being angry for a minute or two, it occurred to me to drive out to the field office and ask in person if they would do this as an accommodation for my disability. But the field office was closed today. Homeless people pay for their campsites-- they are paying customers just like any other campers-- and are trying to camp legally. Folsom Lake SRA is intentionally trying to make that harder just to be cruel, because the park management just feels icky about the fact that homeless people often use parks as temporary relatively safe places to stay. Although it is technically not illegal to discriminate against people for being homeless, it certainly feels like it should be. The majority of homeless people have mental illness or other protected characteristics-- so much so that discrimination against homeless feels like it's actually thinly veiled discrimination against mental illness, a history of incarceration, etc. This policy makes no sense at all because sites have to be reserved on the website at least 2 days in advance, but the kiosk is not selling sites 2 days out. This means a lot of sites are literally impossible to book based on silly rules that the park management specifically invented for the purpose of being cruel to homeless people. The job of park management is supposed to be to make the park as accessible as possible and as enjoyable as possible for everyone, regardless of protected characteristics. It's so disappointing that Folsom Lake SRA is prioritizing cruelty over accessibility.

It is well lit at night and has a decent amount of parking. Sacramento State students are better off using University/65th Street, and utilizing the walk path under the traintracks on Elvas & 65th. The little lightning bolts embedded in the ground at the station are just so cute! 4 confident, positive stars!
