I've eaten at Undergrounds as well as ordered catering from them and I'm always beyond satisfied with everything I've eaten or drank there! Undergrounds is a very cool repurposed space in the First Ward - it used to be a funeral home! This curious past is used throughout the space, and menu items are named after the deceased. You'll also see mugs emblazoned with pictures of famous deceased people - which are handpainted for members of the Roaster Club! Food: Coffee was pretty good, nothing to write home about. I was thrown off a bit by the food which was cooked mostly in a microwave. I also saw muffins being resold from Wegmans at a higher price. This irked me slightly because when I go out and pay someone else to make me food, I want it to be different than what I can do myself at home. Perhaps the kinks will be worked out as time moves on. Some of the food options were really interesting and I'd love to try them if there are ever meat alternatives available (teddy grahams on a sandwich?! I kind of love it). Definitely worth a stop in for the cool building and revitalization of the OFW. Also looking forward to a wider selection of Snowy Owl Kombucha products! read more

This new coffee house is such a great addition to the first ward. The building itself use to be a funeral home so the dead theme they went with for decor is pretty amusing. Coffee is excellent and the breakfast sandwich I went with was exactly what I wanted it to be. I haven't tried lunch yet but I'm sure to be back there soon. They are also partnering with Snowy Owl Kombucha (I'm in love with their Kombucha) so needless to say, pretty excited for that. Undergrounds is also has a annual mug club so to speak that offers some pretty attractive perks (haha) so I'm also considering buying into that as well- definitely recommend asking about it. read more

I love the interior of this spot! Sugar skulls abound. The employees were very amicable both times I visited this week. I ordered a straight up latte without thinking (which I can't drink because I'm Lactose Intolerant), and the lovely barista made me an almond milk version without hesitation! Very comfy, large coffee shop in the Old First Ward. We were there within the first weeks of opening, so my review reflects that. Décor is sparse, but fun with a macabre Day of the Dead twist. Two rooms, one with a few booths and the coffee bar. The other room was large, with a few steps to descend, containing large wooden tables. Coffee was delish. I heard one of the owners was researching in South America to find his own source. The breakfast menu was small, but interesting. The Colonel sandwich was good, but I think with time and practice it will be even better. It seemed the help was getting used to the kitchen and the busy-ness, so it took a while to get our food. Again, I think this will improve. Definitely a great place to check out if your near the 'hood. read more

My first time to undergrounds and I was not disappointed. As a lover of architecture, history and great food, undergrounds has done a great job of restoring this old building, while playing off its history to create a fun environment. I was pleasantly surprised at variety of menu options and opted to split two breakfast sandwiches with my boyfriend (both were delicious). I also enjoyed an unsweetened honey iced tea, which was very flavorful and refreshing. I am definitely looking forward to coming back! read more

Occasionally vegan baked goods are offered for sale, which are always delish! Ugh I love when yelp leads me to a place that's just as awesome as the reviews say it is! I LOVED underground's coffee! The atmosphere is cool, the employees are awesome and they make some pretty good coffee! Visited on a late Monday morning and there were a few people in there but mostly empty. The front room is huge and has about 15 tables in it. Walking up the stairs and you can smell just how good the food is here and the employees were super welcoming after we told them it was our first time visiting. My friend and I both ordered a cold brew, mine with soy and hers black. They were strong and smooth which I loved. They also have snowy owl kombucha on tap here so we got a glass of the strawberry lemonade. I really enjoyed this kombucha, it was crisp and not overly sweet like some can be. By around noon it got pretty busy with those coming in to order lunch, all the food smelled so good! Overall I wish I could give this place ten stars, I can't wait to go back for food! read more

It's spacious and quiet but still maintains the coffee shop vibe. Great variety of drinks and delicious food all at reasonable/comparable prices. I'm a big fan of this place! I really love the fact they played with the theme of the old funeral home and made it beautiful with murals and day of the dead decor. My friend and I paid less than $10 each for a latte and a breakfast sandwich. We both agreed we liked it here, that it's affordable, and the ambiance/ decor was great. We also couldn't stop staring at the mugs they have for members hanging on the shelves across from the counter. They have different celebrities faces on them who have passed away. Super cool idea! Overall, this is a great coffee shop to just sit and hang out with a friend and talk for a few hours or to get some work done on your laptop. Very "hipster" for those into trendy cafes like myself. I can't think of one negative thing to say about this place. Staff is friendly, lunch and breakfast are excellent. Design of the place is awesome (being from Albany, seeing some arty stuff is a sight for sore eyes!). Great coffee, too. Unlike the coffee from some chain who shall remain nameless, i don't get cramps after my cup of joe at Undergrounds. Some of the sandwiches are not recommended for lunch, though: you won't be able to keep your eyes open afterwards at work! Side note: naps in the office should be mandatory! read more

WE LOVE THIS PLACE! It's our favorite little spot to get breakfast on a Saturday with our toddler but we also sneak away to enjoy a coffee just the two of us sometimes. It's a great atmosphere, all the staff is so friendly and willing to give recommendations! It's spotlessly clean and just has a great vibe. Big tables in the front if you have a larger group and booths in the back for just the two of us. The meals are priced well and that price gets you a good meal. This place is adorable! The parking lot was full so I was afraid I would make it in and out on my hour lunch but it was fast! I ordered the McKinley which was great Mac&cheese on a sandwich what more can you ask for was super cheese with bacon! We ordered and waited for maybe 10 mins for food which was fine. So happy to have this in the neighborhood. It's a proper coffee house with top notch coffee and food, multi level seating, and plenty of space for people to spread out and enjoy the cafe for hours, while drinking, reading, working, etc. The food is thoughtful with names related to Buffalo and coffee pioneers, and are unique and tasty. There is even an extensive kids menu for little tikes who come to the cafe. The decor is phenomenal, with custom painted murals all around you, featuring bright colors, and a mix of day of the dad and New Orleans jazz themes- which really pulls the multiple rooms together. They even do local events like Trunk or Treat, a Christmas Tree lighting, and do candle light yoga. The ladies who run the place are passionate about the product, and put a lot of thought and time into each recipe and each drink- even where the coffee comes from. The beans are freshly roasted every week, so you are getting the freshest coffee possible overtime you come in. Also, their t-shirts that they sell are incredibly soft and super comfortable. Would have never known about this place if a coworker didn't suggest it for a work breakfast. This coffee shop is amazing, love how the revamped an old funeral home and played on it roots for the theme. This shop plays very well on the sugar skull/day of the dead incorporated in its logo and mural in the shop. Another fun thing about this restaurant is that many of their signature items are named after notable persons of Buffalo history. And lastly to go long with their theme they have a Roastery club, for a fee you can join and have a mug customized with a deceased person of your choosing to be immortalized on a stunning coffee mug (but once that person is chosen it can't be chosen twice). The mugs did spark an interesting conversation between us coworkers on what celebrity who passed on we wouldn't mind sitting down and having a cup of coffee with. As you can see I really do love the theming, but on to the drink and the breakfast. I decided to orders a white chocolate mocha and a vanilla yogurt parfait. The drink was amazing, I usually find myself very particular about mochas and it was one of the best one's I ever had. The yogurt parfait was delicious as well, at first I though the price might be a little much until I received a bowl full of yogurt, granola, and huge fruit, I've never seen berries that big, but they were fresh, and flavorful. All I can say is that I can't wait to go back to Undergrounds to try more of what they have to offer. This place has a ton of character. They use a dark roasted coffee for their drinks but it has a smooth flavor. Their assortment of dairy and plant based milks are extensive. I tried their interesting brown sugar-cinnamon ice coffee and it was delicious. The Rick James B**** sandwich was excellent! It is made with three pieces of bread and is large enough to share. The chips are a bag of lays, I was a little disappointed they didn't make their own because that would have topped off the meal. Didn't know how big the sandwich would be so we also picked up the Teddy Roosevelt. The TD was good and unique but it paled in comparison to the Rick James B****.
