This is a very interesting place. And it's big. Very. I came in the door from the parking lot. You enter into a big room that looks like it's great for meetings and things. Has some paintings on the walls but isn't too busy. You go up some stairs to order. I picked up some things from the Blue Eyed Baker, the blueberry lemon scone was the big winner. By far. At around $4 it should be good. There are a few booths upstairs. The usual loud music, but much lower volume down below, thankfully. Tons of merchandise you can pick up. T-shirts and mugs and more. The parking lot is challenging, I'd never park there willingly again. There's street parking, use it. read more

The breakfast sandwiches are my favorite here and the coffee is strong and delicious. The idea of a coffee shop in what was once a funeral home is a bit eclectic, but works very well with the theme they have developed. The wifi is fast and the place is very homey and community minded, which earns it 5-stars (along with the coffee, salads and breakfast). They also offer breakfast bowls for $7 and they are tasty, but I'm not a fan of the 0.50 upcharge for sauces that can typically be free (like ketchup?). The lunch sandwiches are hit or miss. There are some unique ones, but I haven't found a favorite yet. Their salads are pretty darn great and usually my go-to for lunch since I haven't yet found a lunch sandwich here that I absolutely adore. read more

This space is was natural light and artsy coffee shop dreams are made of. To add to its cool factor: I was told this space used to be a funeral home. I really loved the Mexican skeleton murals found throughout as well as the tile work and plants you'll find in the bathroom. Undergrounds Coffee House definitely has their vibe down pat. During my three hour visit I was able to sample the menu for lunch as well as order a cappuccino. I'll kick things off with the Cappuccino. Unfortunately, the flavor ended up tasting more burnt and I would prefer. Maybe I can't imagine that it always tastes this way- maybe a one-off experience? Good news is, my lunch was fabulous. I had the Louie G sandwich with salami, peach preserves and ricotta served with potato chips alongside the Amish beets side dish topped with goat cheese and walnuts. The beets were certainly the standout for me! Note that due to being a good and coffee establishment, the ventilation isn't fabulous and you will leave smelling like the food. What a great vibe this coffee house has. We enjoyed looking at the art displayed for sale by local artists and the history of the building, while waiting for our breakfast and beverages. This was our first time there. Don't know how we missed this place for so long! The breakfast sandwiches were delicious and so was the latte and cappuccino we had. I came to Underground Coffee on Friday for lunch expecting a place with coffee, maybe some tea, and some basic coffee shop food like muffins and sandwiches and BOY WAS I WRONG! This place is seriously awesome, for a multitude of reasons. First, the menu here has a ton of different names so you'll have to actually read the description which is something I didn't really do, and second, they have a ton of sick mugs of fallen celebrities that look amazing. I ended up ordering what I thought was just a chicken sandwich because I didn't even really read what else was in the sandwich, it turned out to be quite possibly the best pulled chicken BBQ sandwich I've ever had in my life, I'm talking this thing is legendary! Add some in house orange juice with a side of potato chips and you had a darn good lunch! I highly recommend checking this place out for the food alone. They offer a huge seating area along with all the coffee and snacks you could want. I can't wait to come back in the very near future! The family and I wanted breakfast out before spending the day pool side. Breakfast is always difficult with vegan options but we have been hearing good things about Underground Coffee house so decided to give it a try. It did not disappoint. The building has a lot of character with tons of seating and even a great outdoor spot. We chose to sit outside and it was great being surround by lots of flowers and plants. The line was super long but we called ahead and our food came quickly. Although we only ordered vegan options the menu looked huge and the long line must be worth the wait for more the just the options we got. Our whole family ordered vegan breakfast sandwiches on bagels. Kids got a plain bagel and the wife and I got an everything bagel. The just egg, vegan sausage and vegan cheese was a real treat of a breakfast sandwich that is difficult to find. They were delicious and we already really enjoyed the whole experience. There isn't much to dislike at Underground Coffee. The parking lot did seem tight when we entered and exited but there are still many spots and wasn't a big issue. I first found out about this place while at a yoga event at Outer Harbor. I had a great iced coffee between events and decided we had to make our way to the actual brick and mortar shop. It is the type of place that I could spend hours in. It isn't a "comfy, over-stuffed couch" type of coffee shop, but the different rooms are so perfectly decorated and so much fun! Yesterday I finally made it over to Underground Coffee House! In the time of everlasting COVID I decided to do the take-out option. I ordered ahead online and the order was timed so they're weren't many others picking up in the same time. I ended up getting the Ralph Wilson sandwich with vegan cream cheese and a Turtle Macchiato with oat milk. They have a lot of customizable options to make items vegetarian and/or vegan. The order was ready at the designated time and I did get a glimpse of the inside, can't wait til they are able to open again or when the weather is warmer for the patio. All of the ingredients on the sandwich were so fresh and the cheese was perfectly melty. The turtle macchiato was a little too sweet for my taste but I'd be interested to try their other drinks however! Everything about this place is fantastic. I had been here once before when they first opened but had forgotten about this place as it is not within my usual stomping grounds. When original plans fell through this morning, my brunch buddy Donna and I serendipitously ended up here. Housed in a former funeral home, The Underground features a festive Day of Dead decor. Their impressive menu includes cold and hot drinks, all day breakfast including breakfast bowls, yogurt parfaits, sandwiches, and salads. They also carry pastries from Blue Eyed Bakery, tea from Aera Tea Co., and Kombucha from Snowy Owl and Big Norwegian komucha companies. I loved how they support other local businesses by featuring their products in their coffeehouse. All of the photography on the wall was also for sale from a featured artist. The latte that I ordered was perfect and the sandwich was delicious! I had The Alfred Peet: toasted multi grain bread with egg, Gouda,lettuce, tomato, and house made veggie cream cheese. When we ordered, the guy at the counter was helpful in pointing out the Gluten-free options to my friend. We also had a friendly chat with another employee, Sam, who was happy to answer some of our questions as she cleared our table. Great atmosphere, service, food and drink here. And the prices aren't bad either. My sandwich and medium sized drink came up to about 10 bucks. They also have a Roastery Club you can join if you frequent the place. Underground's coffee is a favorite coffee shop of my husband for both coffee and sandwiches. I'm personally a fan of their coffee - and love that, at least during COVID, you get a free coffee when you order beans! We ordered UG for lunch and was very impressed at how quick it came and how cold our cold-sandwiches were when they arrived! They also had thrown in two muffins (freebie or wrong order?) the chocolate chip was devoured in seconds and probably one of the best muffins I've ever had. Trying to hold ourselves off from the blueberry muffin! My only reservation when it comes to Underground is that all of their sandwiches come a little sweet - with honey or sweet aioli, and as someone who loves a good savory sandwich, I wish there were more options there. I ordered the Beef on Weck sandwich which was good not too much of a twist From the original so I was left wanting au jus and a salted roll. read more

Luckily a missed turn led us to drive by Undergrounds one night and I did a little research and found a pretty cool place! We ended up coming here two mornings in a row and left happy both times. I had the Ralph Wilson with bacon one day and a yogurt parfait the next. Both days I had a vanilla latte. Food was great, coffee was tasty and service was excellent. My wife loves sugar skull art so I got her an Undergrounds logo mug which she loved! I also picked some Kenya coffee beans that were roasted on site. Consider this a place to come and have a freshly brewed and steamed Cup of Joe or an Iced Latte, to come and get some Peace & Tranquility while reading a Book or checking up stuff on your Laptop. I've gone by this place a bunch of times on my way home after spending time walking around Canalside and told my Grandma that this would be a nice place to stop in for a small Lunch. After parking in the small lot on the side we walked in to the front where there were some patrons logged on to their Laptops then on the Left walked up some Stairs to the Café area with the staff hard at work pumping out Sandwiches & Coffee to serve to the small rush that was upon them. We put in our order and sat down just talking about our Day and whatnot. For our Sandwiches my Grandma got the Ralph Wilson, which was fluffy Egg and Cheddar Cheese on an Everything Bagel. I never pictured a Sandwich like this to depict the owner of our Hometown Football Team (Buffalo Bills). I got a Panini called the Luigi, which had a combination of the most unusual ingredients together between 2 slices of Bread. Salami, Mesclun Salad Greens, Apricot Chutney and an Espresso infused Ricotta. The bread was sporting those Golden Brown marks, I bit down and got that Creamy Ricotta with the Espresso and the Salami had that Firm support (there were half a dozen slices on it) the Greens brightened it up, this sandwich was leaning more towards the Sweet side. I also had a small Hazelnut Cappuccino to sip on while glancing at the Skeletons on the Wall. The only other time that I was here was when my Great Aunt Suzy was visiting from Florida, we stopped in here after walking around the Erie Basin Marina. Suzy and my Grandma just got a Coffee and a Scone to split while I just got a Blueberry & Chocolate Smoothie. This is a great little coffee shop set in an old mortuary. They've kept some themes going from that time (hence the name). You can join the mug club to have a ceramic mug waiting for you there whenever you visit. It will be a mug of whichever dead person you chose - as long as someone else has not already claimed that mug. Such a unique idea! I have always had really good service and tea here. This last time I expanded to trying their breakfast bowls. (If you can't find it on the menu it's camouflaged in the top left corner on a new addition to the mounted wall menu.) They let you build your protein, base items, and toppings for one set price. I got egg, sweet potato, sausage, kale, and more (I lost track of all the delicious things on it). It's a hearty sized bowl that lasted me for breakfast and lunch. Definitely recommend checking it out if Undergrounds is not on your list already. read more

What to get: Colonel Francisco breakfast sandwich with Apricot Jam on the side (and then in the trash lol) What not to get: Caught here when you're in a hurry... it's a long wait Speaking of a long wait: I have something quite long and heavy if you're curious Alex and I have recommended a lot of places to each other, and usually we agree, as we both have excellent taste. But this is one of those places he definitely loves a lot more than I do. He told me he'd disown me if I didn't love Undergrounds, so consider me disowned. There are lots of good and bad elements of this place, and in the end it averages out to a 4-star rating, but bear in mind that for a family business, I'll usually only rate from 3 (bad) to 5 (great), so this is somewhere right in the middle. The good: (1) People love it. The Buffalo (cough hipster cough) community is obsessed with it, even though it's off the usual beaten (Elmwood) path, it's getting a massive amount of traffic. Cool. (2) It has a large and innovative menu which uses fresh ingredients. By innovative, I mean a little over the top and hipster with all the local sourcing, but these are also positive things. (3) The Colonel Francisco actually tastes good. It's not great, and it's a good thing I got the Apricot Jam on the side or it would have ruined it. You can tell the ingredients are fresh. The bad: (1) So pretentious. So hipster. So extraordinarily overpriced. Nowhere close to the best breakfast sandwich or bagel in town. But a good one, nevertheless. Yet at this price, it better be damn good. Several dollars more than comparable (and better) breakfast sandwiches elsewhere. If it were $4 I might have given it (just about) a 5 star. (2) What is with fruit and sugar added to savoury food. The USA is seriously obsessed with sugar. Unhealthy addictions FTW. The Apricot Jam that everyone raves about is extremely sweet and awful, so unless you like sweet syrupy fruit tastes on your breakfast bagels, get that sh** on the side and have it with your toast when you get home. It's basically just fruit jelly. (3) The wait time can be extremely long even if there are only 2 or 3 people in front of you. We're talking over 20 mins for a breakfast sandwich. They just don't have enough help. (4) I didn't like the service. The girls were loudly doing the "sassy attitude" thing and very audibly saying "this is gonna be for Fox", "yeah like that's a real name, okay", "yeah I should call myself Lion, so I can be cool too", and while I didn't get offended, the tone in which it was done would have offended other people. While listening to this "banter" I noticed a spelling mistake on a sign for the cookies, so I corrected it, and let the girls know that I'd corrected it. They let me know that they really could not have cared any less. Yay friendly people. Yay customer service. Woo. To break the sandwich down, the bagel is pretty good (but nowhere near NYC standards), the sausage tasted really nice, and the rest of it was just ok. It could have been a bit juicier. And for the price they should probably serve up 2 breakfast sandwiches instead ;) I guess in the end I just don't get it. It's one of those "Underground" things that everybody knows about. I can't come back here because of the wait time. If I call it in and misjudge it, my crap will get cold and I won't enjoy it. If I go in and order I could be waiting anywhere from 15 to 30 mins while they ridicule my name (just kidding, I don't care less about that, I'm just being a d*** about it). I respect Alex's recommendations very highly, and a lot of the best Yelpers in Buffalo have given this a glowing 5 star review. I don't agree, but it's certainly not bad. I discovered this place years ago when they were freshly launched. Then I moved away and wasn't sure if they would make it. I recently visited Buffalo. I was thrilled to learn they were still in business so I dropped in. The place has retained its original charm and expanded its genius. The food was fresh and hearty. The coffee was rich and smooth. Not bitter, brewed and boring. I needed help with the menu because they had great descriptions but with a line behind I didn't have time to go through everything without holding things up. So, I told the gal what I was into and she told me what I wanted. They were kind, friendly, accommodating and efficient. Multiple areas to sit, great bathrooms and a cool theme. It's Mexican "day of the dead" themed and the building was a funeral home for decades before it was a coffee house so the building is aligned with its previous iteration. I would be here all the time if I lived closer!! The Underground Cafe is unique and an artsy cafe and coffee joint. They even had a "mug club" we're you pay a flat fee and drink as much coffee as you want! It's an old funeral home that they remodeled and I love the decor and painted murals!! The skull design is implemented in the art surrounding the cafe which is cool. Snowy Owl Kombucha is on tap (love how they collaborate with other local businesses). I usually get a medium sized cup and mix the two flavors they have. The perfect fell good drink! The last time I went to the Underground Cafe was with my good teacher friend on our last day of school. We split an egg sand with lettuce, tomato, Gouda, and homemade veggie cream cheese on multigrain bread!! That was my favorite and oh so tasty and healthy. We also split the beet goat cheese salad with walnuts. That was a treat as well. I appreciated how they split the salad and sandwich on separate dishes!! So excited I finally got to go to this coffee shop, their hours are limited to daytime hours, so this was the first time I got a chance. My companion and I each ordered a drink, he ordered a brown sugar cinnamon latte which was amazing and I ordered a chai tea which was great. I do wish they had honey on the condiment table. The atmosphere is much larger than I expected with a whole area to sit down on the bottom and then the order/kitchen area and then some more seating in that area. They have a lot of local artwork as well as coffee, nitro cold brew, and kombucha, but bring your own growler if you want a lot. We each ordered a breakfast sandwich with their homemade veggie cream cheese which was great. I recommend getting pepper jack on the sandwich cuz the flavor really stuck out. I would love to come back and try another dish as well as some of their Christmas coffee creations. Love the decor. Stopped in for a quick lunch, but they were jam packed so I had to wait just a little bit (no problem with me). The baristas were extremely friendly, had a great conversation with the person taking my order. They recommended their dark roast to me, I honestly forgot what it was but it was DELICIOUS! I normally drink my coffee black and she made that review for no mix ins or anything. I got a Colonel Francisco sandwich, the chipotle apricot spread was very interesting. I've never had something like that on a sandwich, but it was great (has a bit of spice to it, so I would be wary if you're not keen on spice). The facilities were clean (and the smell of the roasts and food will definitely give you a good feeling), I would definitely come back here for a small lunch or breakfast with a friend. What a neat little coffee house! Talk about a hidden gem. I stopped in here for my lunch break for the first time today and was pleasantly surprised! The menu had both breakfast and lunch options. My only complaint is that there is wayyyy too much squished on the menu board. It was difficult to read at a glance with the history of the item name on top of the ingredients. It would be nice if that info was displayed separately so you could just get a clear shot of the ingredients. The Alfred was my sandwich of choice and it was delicious! Underground has easily become one of my favorite coffee joints. I fell in love with the brown sugar cinnamon cold brew and their Ralph Wilson breakfast sandwich just knocks me out from the deliciousness haha! If you want to talk local haunts, in every expression of the word, this foodie suggest Undergrounds Coffee House on South Park Ave. We all get into this automatic groove of pulling into the drive-thru for our daily Timmy's fix, and of course there are other conveniently located cafes up and down the Elmwood strip, but have you ever taken a Saturday afternoon to enjoy a sit-down coffee experience in an old funeral home? The food here is to die for, literally. The restored building has been handled with much care, and you can tell as you purvey the scene and really dig into this little corner of the Old First Ward. Just enough antique appeal to make you feel like you're back in Old Buffalo, and enough personal touch to make you not feel quite that old. The Dia de Los Muertos and New Orleans Jazz theme is a great personality match. One of the owners, Sarah, seems very gracious and has done a beautiful job restoring this property. I ordered the Tim Russert sandwich, a large fluffy egg held together by two slabs of hot and oozing cinnabon. It paired well with my cold brew fusion of espresso, iced mocha, and cinnamon. You can never have too much cinnamon. Many of their hand-made sandwiches are named after famous contributors to Buffalo, like The Rick James and The Grover Cleveland, making the place extra neighborly and historically proud. There is a lot to admire inside Undergrounds, and out; this is a nice after class stop for people at the Core yoga studio that just opened up across the street, and is a short drive away from the grain elevators.
