I learned so much about the plants, the natural growing methods Maui Chocolate uses and the process of refining Cocoa into chocolate. The tasting after the orchard tour was in a tree house above the orchards offering beautiful views of the orchard, views of Molokai and Lanai. Once you have tasted Maui Chocolate you won't eat anything else, you shouldn't because you are eating pure coco with only natural ingredients prepared the Maui Chocolate way. Do the tour, whether it's the factory tour or the orchard tour (I am a freak about gardening and growing) so I wanted to learn more about the trees and methods and I truly learned a lot about their natural growing methods. We got to see the entire process of how chocolate is made from the cacao plant all the way to the final product. It was fascinating to learn about each stage and our guide made it easy to understand while keeping things fun and engaging. I also learned so much about dark chocolate which I never used to enjoy until now! During the tasting I sampled a variety of unique flavors coffee, guava, mango, and even sugar-free and each one was incredible in its own way. The quality and freshness were unmatched. I was so impressed that after returning home I ordered two shipments from Maui Chocolate because I just couldn't get enough. A quick tip: arrive a little early for your tour. My only thing is that certain vendors sell similar items and their prices can be different. For example, I bought items from one vendor then found them at another vendor for a lesser price. So I recommend browsing all the booths before making any purchases. The vendors are nice though and are happy to let you know about their products! Happy shopping!

Immediately we saw some sea turtles; and likely saw at least half a dozen turtles during our 30 minutes there! It's definitely called turtle town for a reason. We also saw various fish, a reef shark, and got up close to these turtles, it was amazing. We were so close that we can probably reach out and almost touch them! The whole family had so much fun; definitely recommend this spot to swim with turtles.

We also had the farm-to-table brunch, and the food was absolutely incredible fresh, delicious, and one of the highlights of the tour. I took my parents for their 44th Anniversary and we all love outdoorsy activities so I knew we'd all enjoy this! We were asked to arrive at 10:30 am for the tour and it lasted until 1-1:30 pm. Arrive with good walking shoes, SPF, light sweater and hat (it can get either a little chilly or hot from the direct sunlight), and well hydrated if possible. We were greeted by our friendly and knowledgeable tourguide, Kate from Maryland! She shared with us so many facts about the locally grown produce from herbs, vegetables, fruits, to the friendly worms, to compost and facts about the Farm and the hardworking staff! It was interactive because we got to sniff the herbs, taste the locally grown lettuce, carry a chicken (as seen in the photo with my mom), and even pick the Cherry coffee! After the 2 hour tour, the last hour takes you back to this beautiful seating area in a garden like setting for your 4 course lunch! Each course, the chef comes out and shares details of each course. First course was a Medley of Greens grown on the farm with Tangerine vinaigrette. It was a generous portion for our party of 3 and tried to eat it throughout. There was spiraled carrots and radish with julienned snap peas. Second course was Pan Seared Ono (their proteins are all locally sourced) with Mamaki Tea and Lemongrass Rice with Bok Choy, Collared Greens and Cabbage. Third course was my favorite! I'm usually a big fan of fish but the chicken was so savory and that rub was delish! It was an Organic, Cage Free Chicken with Coffee Cherry Citrus rub with Caramelized Coffee Honey Hash of Carrots, Parsnips, Rutabaga and Celery Root. The spread was a Turmeric and Parsnip puree. Last course of dessert was the O'o Freshly Brewed Coffee with Milk and Simple Syrup with a Dessert Platter of Fresh sliced Pineapple, Tangerine and Apple with Homemade Chocolate Truffles. Molokai is part…read moreof Maui County, but the geographically isolated Kalawao/Kalaupapa peninsula on the north shore is its own county entity. It's the only county in the USA that is administered by the health department instead of elected officials due to the area's history as a leper colony. It has a storied history, both sad and positive; much more can be said about it than in a short review. To actually see the area, which is open to the public by special appointment, you need to charter a flight or take the donkey trail down the cliffs, which is closed due to a landslide at the time of this writing. For casual visitors, the next best thing is viewing the area from the top of the cliffs at the Kalauapapa Lookout. This area is an easy and beautiful drive from the airport or Kaunakakai. It's a free activity, with ample parking, modern clean restrooms, and a paved walkway for wheelchair or stroller access. The 5 minute walk to the cliff face is through beautiful pine forest; it's quiet and reverent here. The lookout has a rock wall with a number of historic markers that state the history of Kalawao including what life was like for the past and current residents. It's a simply gorgeous view of the ocean, sky, and peninsula. Be sure to walk all the way to the end to the majestic seacliffs of Molokai's north shore. I could have stayed here much longer just to watch the clouds rolling in and out. This is a must-stop attraction while on the island.

I don't even remember the name of the tour company...that is not important now. What is, was our luck in finding to irrepressable Kowie... from Maui. Kowie showed up in Male Daisy Duke shorts and a blue/yellow Hawaiian shirt. He enthusiastically introduced everyone as they boarded the bus, and made embarrasingly candid small talk with them and the group. 2 Black women from Atlanta entered - " Are you Sistas...sisters....or just naughty friends? " Kowie then proceeded to load his Road to Hana mix tape he brought along, amazing stuff!! Brotha IZ, Fiji, Don Ho, amongst others was played throughout our journey, and boy did it add to the experience. Kowie has a mischievious little snicker that he invokes when he gives you off-color or controversial Island facts: "The original natives were involved in incest and underage frivolity.....it was not perversion that drove them, it was just the natural state of events". "The Island was just a blend of manism, until the White Man came and brought his Christianity". As far as driving the tricky route, Kowie is the master. He dares anyone foolish enough to fuck with him (i.e. incoming traffic containing unsuspecting tourists) with a taunt of "You wanna Dance? Well let me take my ride and dance with you Babeee". He takes turns with expert precision, and keeps the tour going with short stops with an emphasis on Camera Worthy Locations in an area just beaming and chockful of Camera Worthy Locations. What a character this Kowie dude is: Along the route, he stopped in the middle of the road to retrieve a fallen avocado and nearly got run over, we stopped so he could heckle a dude taking a piss on the side of the road while his embarrased girlfriend stood gaurd, we stopped so he could make fun of a trust fund baby at the Hana Bus stop for no good reason, and he fed Hostess Crumb Cakes to greedy baby mongooses near Black Sand Beach. We didn't take the pre-ordained cookie cutter route either. We trespassed on Oprah Winfrey's private beach, stole mini pinecones from the Red Sand beach, and parked illegally on the other side of the road many times to get a good shot. "Here comes a pure beauty" he would cackle as we passed yet another waterfall. Along the way, Kowie made small talk with nearly every local that passed us on foot or incoming traffic. He dropped off some local banana bread to the hippy dude selling orchid arrangements along the road, and asked about tomorrow's surfing conditions with a random marijuana induced local at the end of our journey. Kowie generously gave us a copy of the mix CD as we tipped him on the way out. If you are EVER going on a van tour of Hana, You MUST have Kowie as your guide. Anything else would be pure folly.

It starts at their building in Lahaina, which has a little café/coffee shop, plenty of chocolate for sale, and a rooftop experience that looked interesting but we didn't get to try. By the time we finished the tour, the kids had reached the "we have successfully experienced enough things today" portion of the vacation. Fair enough. From there, you take a fun little ride out to the cacao farm, and that's where this became much more than "let's go eat some chocolate." Our guide, Andrew (I'm about 95% sure I'm remembering his name correctly!), was fantastic. He seemed genuinely interested in cacao, the process, the company, and what they are doing there. That makes such a difference. He talked about how cacao is grown and processed, the history behind Kuʻia, and a little about founder Dr. Gunars Valkirs and his rather fascinating path to chocolate. Then, of course, there was the tasting. Lots and lots of little squares of chocolate. This is educational work I was willing to undertake. Unfortunately, I can't tell you which particular varieties were my favorites because apparently I was too busy eating them to take adequate scientific notes. What I can tell you is that there really wasn't one I disliked. What surprised me most was how much flavor there could be in chocolate that wasn't buried under a mountain of sugar. The differences and complexity of the cacao actually came through, and it made me think about chocolate completely differently. The chocolate sample they gave us back at the counter was also fantastic, as was the coffee drink we ordered. My only regret is that we didn't buy more chocolate before leaving. Be warned, though: apparently this tour has side effects. I went in expecting a fun Maui family activity where we'd learn a few things and eat some chocolate. I left wondering about cacao varieties, fermentation, processing, climate, chemistry and several other questions that absolutely nobody in my family asked me to investigate. Such a lovely place to watch the sun set, and the nightly traditional evening plunge off black rock. After the sunset show I headed to the bar. I ordered the lilikoi chi chi and it was super fruity and delicious! The service was very friendly and prompt. I met up with some fellow Yelpers and we all had a front row view to the awesome entertainment. Both of the singers were amazing and super entertaining. They took lots of audience suggestions, and they were very lively. I especially enjoyed their original song "Hana Hou!" I ordered a side salad and cheese quesadillas. Both were very yummy!
