We are on the Island of Maui and have done many types of tours in many different places but when I read about The Maui Chocolate Tour they had me at CHOCOLATE! You can cover a work boot in chocolate and I would eat it, I am not ashamed to say that I am a "Chocaholic" as well as a "Chocosaurus". We met up at their factory located In Lāhainā, fabulous store and open air seating area above their factory. Great modern design and decor and fully operated on solar and Tesla back up battery's. Staff is very friendly and helpful, but the gem of the operation is "Rissi" our guide. He was so knowledgeable of the operation and spoke so well of the growing process I could have listened to him all day and never got bored. He also integrated great things in about growing up on the island, the culture and his family background. Well done "Rissi" I wanna hang out with you. I learned so much about the plants, the natural growing methods Maui Chocolate uses and the process of refining Cocoa into chocolate. The tasting after the orchard tour was in a tree house above the orchards offering beautiful views of the orchard, views of Molokai and Lanai. Once you have tasted Maui Chocolate you won't eat anything else, you shouldn't because you are eating pure coco with only natural ingredients prepared the Maui Chocolate way. Do the tour, whether it's the factory tour or the orchard tour (I am a freak about gardening and growing) so I wanted to learn more about the trees and methods and I truly learned a lot about their natural growing methods. What really hit the heart most was Maui Chocolate donates 100% of it profits to charity, works with the community and also works with other countries on growing methods. I recently went on the Maui Chocolate Tour and despite the pouring rain during the first half I had an absolute blast! The experience was both educational and delicious from start to finish. We got to see the entire process of how chocolate is made from the cacao plant all the way to the final product. It was fascinating to learn about each stage and our guide made it easy to understand while keeping things fun and engaging. I also learned so much about dark chocolate which I never used to enjoy until now! During the tasting I sampled a variety of unique flavors coffee, guava, mango, and even sugar-free and each one was incredible in its own way. The quality and freshness were unmatched. I was so impressed that after returning home I ordered two shipments from Maui Chocolate because I just couldn't get enough. A quick tip: arrive a little early for your tour. I ran a bit late but was still able to join (thankfully!) and I noticed they run right on schedule. Overall this tour was a highlight of my Maui trip -- fun, flavorful, and full of learning. We stopped here to try some local chocolate and found out that they have a wine bar upstairs that does chocolate pairings you get five free trial pieces and can purchase more along with pairings for wine and liquor. They also had hot chocolate shakes coffee and more. The staff or very friendly and helpful. The chocolate was amazing. We bought a bunch to bring home would definitely recommend the guava blood orange mango and the OMG or some of the best but the basic single origin was also tremendous. We were looking for ways to fill our day before our red eye and didn't want to do anything that would require a shower. Hubby had seen this tour earlier in the week, so I checked on availability that morning and was able to book the factory tour for same day (there's also a farm tour when you see how cacao is grown, harvested, etc.). The factory tour was a little more pricey but 1) we didn't have another option and 2) it appealed to me that it was led by the CEO. Yes, the CEO! His name is Gunars Valkirs, and his journey to being a chocolatier is very interesting if you ask him about it. Their business model and commitment to quality chocolate is also notable. Anyway, the tour included Gunars walking us through the factory to see how cacao goes from the pod to the package. At the end you get to pick 4 flavors of their chocolate to have in the tasting room. They also give you cacao sorbet, which is SO GOOD (it has a fruity flavor). Hubby and I shared the samples and I never thought I'd say this, but I had had enough chocolate by the time we were done. Surprisingly, we both really liked the mango chocolate. For taking the tour, each person gets $25 to spend in the store or online, so we got a sampler to do a tasting with our kids at home. The company was hit hard by COVID and the fire. Taking the tour is a great way to help restore the Lahaina community. We've done the Hershey tour, and this is much more up close and personal. If you want to know the difference between candy (like Hershey) and high quality chocolate (like Ku'ia), I highly recommend this tour. read more

I had the pleasure of going on this tour today. Let me say I am not the biggest chocolate fan, I don't hate it but I can live without it. Well that may have just changed. I wasn't expecting much I figured it would be nice to check out and something fun to do with my mom. So I booked us on the farm and factory tour. I am happy I did my mother and I both had a really nice time. We arrived at the tour check in which is the factory and store. We were greeted by the employees when we got there and everyone was very friendly and welcoming. I like the parking as it is covered in solar panels which makes them able to run completely off grid and kept my car very cool for Lahaina. The store is not the biggest but they have many different options as far as choices of chocolate. We had brandy as our tour guide and she was incredible and you can tell that she really enjoys her job. She made the tour fun as well as informative. It is nice that they are bringing agriculture back to Lahaina. We did the farm tour and it was informative and nice taking a walk thru the cacao trees. I took the chocolate factory tour on a day they gave a golden ticket (pretty much ticket to redeem for free gift chocolate after your tour). I felt like it was worth it because you get to learn so much. They take you into the factory and explain how the chocolate is made as well as explaining the differences from their chocolate and store bought. You get to try three stages of the chocolate and it really makes you appreciate the effort that goes into making the delicious treat. Whole tour actually was about 1 hr 15 and then you get to taste 7 more chocolate pieces after. We also got a $25 gift card per person to but stuff at the shop. I don't think you would go wrong with either of the two tours especially if you love chocolate. This is definitely the best chocolate I've ever had and the dark chocolate was not even bitter. Note - It said it expired but I used promo code FACTORY20 which gave 20% off which is quite a bit for the $125 per person tour price. The Maui Chocolate Tour was easily one of the main highlights of my trip! It is only about ten minutes from the Kaanapali Beach stretch of resorts and the quality of chocolate is incredible. Not only are the ingredients super clean, but the taste of the chocolate and varieties available are outstanding. My husband and I went on the Cacao Farm Tour and it was so interesting to learn about the process, history, and journey of chocolate making. Brandy was such an enthusiastic, positive, and experienced tour guide who made the tour even better with her wonderful attitude. We also were in an air conditioned bus to and from the farm which was a huge plus to keep cool. This was truly one of my favorite tours on our Maui trip! There were two types of tours, but we went with the cacao farm tour. Caleb was our guide. He was very knowledgeable, friendly, and kept us all engaged. He gave us the history of how this cacao farm was started as an experiment since Lahaina's climate resembled more of a desert rather than the amazon (which is the ideal climate for cacao to thrive). We were fascinated by the quality and testing placed into producing the chocolates. The testing was also another highlight. We had a chance to sample 9 pieces of chocolates from dark, milk, and the fruit line. I loved how each piece has a distinct fragrance and you can taste the variety of notes. For someone who is dairy sensitive, I love that they have non-dairy options. At the end of the tour, they gave each couple a cooler bag. It was perfect because we used it to store all the chocolates we purchased for family and friends. You can also order them online and pay a scaled shipping fee, but I am not sure about international shipping. They also made it easy to give gratuity, the tour guide has a QR code for Venmo. I thought that was brilliant because many people do not carry cash. read more

I knew a little about the controversy surrounding the chocolate industry and was able to learn a lot more about that and how chocolate should be properly made. Was fun trying all the flavors. Was able to buy a nice mix bag of chocolates to take home and give as a gift as well. The factory tour and chocolates are expensive but well worth it. I've been back to the island since my tour and came out just to buy more chocolates to take home. Worth the drive from any part of the island you're staying at. We did the factory tour and let's just say it was very underwhelming and VASTLY overpriced. The owner, Gunar, leads the tour and from the start spent half the time (if not more) railing on and on about "commodity beans" and how the big manufacturers are unethical, and how they make "sugar delivery vehicles", etc. etc, etc. Oh and complaining about how they won't let him compete in some international cacao competition anymore. It made the entire tour so negative and quite frankly boring. Also, you would think a tour that markets itself as seeing how chocolate gets made would actually show you, you know, chocolate being made. Instead it was here's a room with a bunch of beans, then here us this machine -- which is not running -- that does this, then move to a different small room where oh here is this machine -- which is not running -- that does this, etc. The only thing we actually got to see in action was him slamming trays of chocolates down and sliding them onto a belt to get wrapped. The factory itself is also really small, so again very underwhelming and overall quite boring. The tasting in the lounge area at the top was nice, thy do give you a fair amount of samples to taste. But you would think given how he went on and on about how much more superior his beans and process was, the chocolate would be phenomenal right? It... was not. It was just okay. It actually had a weird, almost powdery aftertaste to it. We ended up only trying a square or two, then left after they provided the rest of the samples. This was absolutely NOT worth the money and the only thing on the island that we regretted doing. read more

We were grateful and happy to see Maui Estate Chocolate survived the fire. It literally got as close as you can imagine. Somehow, it survived and we were so glad because it does so many good charitable things for the community. Even before the fire, 100% of their profit went back to different organizations in the community. Their tour is temporarily closed but the shop is still open. The tour started at the office where a van took us to the chocolate farm. The van's air conditioning was not working and many of us in the van were very uncomfortable with the heat and lack of air movement. The tour itself was interesting with brief history and a description of the chocolate making process. The chocolate tasting was great but felt rushed. An amazing afternoon spent touring the chocolate factory and the farm. The tour of the farm ended with a chocolate tasting and without a doubt some of the best dark chocolate I have tasted. Brandy was a great guide! Ended with a beautiful lunch and sorbet. The one thing that I would provide feedback on is, the chocolate squares are perfect amount of chocolate but you were not able to do a "select your own" chocolate bundle on those. We were told it's online only. We would have all walked out with chocolate if that was an option. But, we will be ordering online when we get back to the main land. read more
