Dragon's Teeth is a unique and memorable stop if you're exploring Maui. The rugged lava rock formations and dramatic coastline create an almost mystical atmosphere, especially with the powerful ocean waves nearby. When I visited, the trail was very muddy in some spots, so be prepared if it has rained recently. It was also incredibly windy -- strong enough that it was difficult to keep my balance at times! Surprisingly, those conditions made the experience feel even more dramatic and unforgettable. Wear sturdy shoes and be prepared for the elements, but if you don't mind a little adventure, Dragon's Teeth is definitely worth the visit. read more

The entrance has a small free parking lot right next to the Ritz-Carlton. However, the parking spots are super limited, and by the time we got there around 2pm, it was completely full. Dragon's Teeth is rocky, wearing sneakers are way better than sandals. Overall, this trail is short and easy and the coastal views are stunning and definitely worth adding to your Maui itinerary. read more

Updated the review to remove a protected area. :) An interesting stop if you are on the North part of West Maui. The iconic rows of jagged stones was formed when flowing lava was blown back and cooled by the wind and waves, it's a culturally significant area and an ancient Hawaiian burial ground called Honokahua so stay on trail and be respectful when visiting. Dragons Pointe is amazing. No guard rails or signage to spoil the natural beauty so be careful, the cliffs are angled inward so if you fall in there is no way you are going to get back up. The "teeth" are amazing and you can also get some nice ocean views. There is also a labyrinth toward the center that reminds me of the stone one at Land's End Trail in SF. Directions will take you toward Ritz Carlton. There is a small parking lot on the right that might fit 12 vehicles and when it gets busy you'll see all sorts of creative parking to get 12 cars to fit. If the lot is full or looks too crazy there is also guest parking heading down the road opposite to the small parking lot. Make a right at the gates to the private community and guest parking is right before the gates read more

Go past the paid parking area and turn left. There are about 12 free spaces. Wear tennis shoes or hiking boots as there are plenty of jagged edges, toe stubbing ledges, and uneven surfaces. Nice easy hike with amazing views of Flemming beach. Great hike if you have kids under 10 years old and love dragons. Watch out for sharp jagged rocks. Near a private golf course so watch out for flying golf balls. Free parking nearby which we didn't find until walking through the golf course. Pretty cool stop to stop by to check out some rock formations that were naturally formed by mother nature. It's a drive down a golf course and then once you hit the end of the road, you make a right into a small parking lot. You take a short walk along the guided path and you'll end up in this interesting looking spot that looks like it came out of the movies. read more

It's definitely worth stopping along the coast of Northern Maui to see these special rock formations! Right outside the Ritz Carlton property, follow a downhill path for about 10 minutes which will lead you straight towards the water. The path is a pretty easy walk, starting out as grass and dirt that transitions to bumpy rock, but I'd still suggest wearing sturdy shoes since the rocky part is quite uneven. These "teeth'' were apparently created from lava that was pushed up by the waves and wind into pointed structures as it cooled. It's fascinating to see the layered texture of the rocks up close. Just be aware that it's super windy here! At times, the water would come up over the edge, so you may get splashed a bit if you go up and touch the Teeth. For this relatively easy "hike", the views are very rewarding and unique. I've certainly never been to another place like this. The only thing is that the parking area is on the smaller side, but this isn't a site that requires a ton of time, so people come and go. We spent around 20 minutes enjoying the rocks and beautiful ocean views before heading back to the car. read more

Dragon's Teeth gets its name from the lava rock formations that create a row of "teeth" - it's actually quite fascinating to see in person. Especially with the contrast of the blue ocean and the waves hitting the cliffs. There is a trail that leads you through a grassy area where it transitions to a rocky path. While you could do it in flip flops... better to have footwear with good tread or support as parts of the ground are uneven when you get to the main lava rock area. Also it gets super windy in the area, so hang on to your hats and prepare to have your hair messed up before dinner. I've been here during sunset and the views are gorgeous, but that's the case with any ocean-side spot on this side of Maui. As you go down the path more, there are a few areas to explore... like the views of the nearby beaches, the little rock maze in the center, and the cliff sides. If you look carefully you may even spot turtles popping their heads out of the water. Unless you're a guest at the Ritz, you'll have to park at the small lot at the start of the trail (easily spotted on Google Maps). Parking is free but limited, but we haven't had a problem getting a spot whenever we wanted to visit the area. Recommend checking out this spot if you're in the area, it's worth the short walk for the views and interesting landscape. read more

We came here on our own in the mid-morning and was able to snag one of the last parking spots. If you don't get one, have no fear because the turnover is pretty regular. It is about a 10 minute walk to get out there, and is not strenuous at all. You walk through sacred native land where people are buried and there are warnings all along the way to stay on the path and be respectful. It is also in the midst of a gold course. Once out there, the views are awesome and the "dragon's teeth" are a site to see. My kids loved playing around in them and were never in danger of any rocks or water. There is also a labyrinth, which was my favorite aspect of the site. People were seriously about walking it correctly as it has some spiritual connotation, if you believe in that stuff. It was also pretty windy out there so pack your chapstick :) read more

Dragon's Teeth is the example to show when forces of nature collide, when the lava from the west Maui volcano poured into the ocean, fierce wind and waves forced it back and it cooled into a formation that resembles great black teeth. It is also known as Makaluapuna Point, which was created from one of the last lava flows on Maui. It's absolutely a hidden gem in the north shore, luckily not yet a very popular tourist attraction, and it could get very windy during the day. read more

If you have the time, Dragon's Teeth is a beautiful yet shorter hike to get down to the main point of this beautiful rock formation. The walk is downhill for the first half. once you get down to the rocks, be careful where you are stepping as there is no real official trail and the ground is uneven. My 67 year old mother and I did this hike early one morning. It's super windy down by the teeth so just be aware! 10/10 read more

Fantastically scenic sea views, whale watching and crashing waves in winter, turtles and dolphins in summer, this short west Maui walk is a must do. Up beside the Ritz Carlton in Kapalua, parking is in front of the Maui Pineapple Chapel but very limited. You can park at the Honolua store car park and walk down or park at Ironwoods down the road, or park at DT Fleming and walk up by the Ritz. Take water and wear sunscreen and make sure you have a hat that ties on if it is windy, and wear sneakers. Obviously not a walk for the disabled or a baby buggy. Lava outcrops resembling dragons teeth, hence the name, create marvelous natural rock formations. Look for the blow hole in winter weather and take the path down to the beach at the beginning of the trail just before it gets to the lava rocks to watch the waves. Please take out anything you take in and respect the area as it is a sacred place in Hawaiian culture. read more

I'd definitely recommend adding this to your Maui bucket list given the historical and geographical significance of this location. You can actually see rock formations that are indicative of how lava must have flowed through this surface. Getting to the actual point was definitely not easy. The map will ask you to not enter the golf field but we honestly couldn't find a different way so had to walk through the golf field to get here. This is a great little hidden gem. I've visited Maui many times and it wasn't until recently that I discovered this. Love the fact that there's a parking lot nearby and the walk is fairly easy and short. (Unfortunately it's not wheelchair friendly.) The entire roundtrip walk was about 20 minutes at most. But be careful. The water can reach all the way to the top. So don't expect those "teeth" to block the water. Definitely stop by. Great for those photo ops! And a nice escape from major tourist destinations! read more

Came here because we saw it recommended to do in Maui. We LOVED our experience. The water crashes against the rocks and splashes you in some parts so you definitely can get wet if it's windy. We did not mind one bit it felt so refreshing and added to the experience. We came early at about 930 on a Tuesday and were able to park in the small lot by the chapel with no issues. It's a short little walk along the golf course and by the Ritz super scenic to get down to the rocks. It's a strenuous walk if you have any ailments I wouldn't recommend because of the terrain. Wear sneakers and tie your hair back if it's windy other than that this was one of our favorite scenic hikes/walks in Maui. Great spot for family photos. Easy to get to and don't forget to go early so you can park close by. read more

One of my new favorite spots! This beautiful lava flow aptly named for the appearance of having dragons teeth is a great day-trip. The ocean hits the rocks and creates quite the spectacle and overspray much the amusement of all visiting. Amazing photo opportunities and you'll even spot a labyrinth which I recommend visiting also. Great spot, just prepare yourself for a short 2 mile round trip hike and bring water. Best additional warning is to prepare with sunblock. Even though it can be a short trip, you're surrounded by water so burns happen quickly. Overall an amazing spot to visit! Must do! read more

This is an interesting area. The drive in is really pretty with tall pines lining the road. There is a small parking area behind the Ritz Carlton. The path is well marked you follow the edge of the golf course down to the teeth area. Be sure to wear shoes it is rough rock walking at the bottom. Beautiful view of DF Fleming Beach. If sea is rough water spashes over the teeth. There is a nice labyrinth there also. It takes about 10 min to walk down. read more
