What is happening? I've eaten here over many years. I've tried to tolerate the consistent slow service since the food is always good. While they're slow the servers are friendly except today, 8/5/20. Here's what I observed & what you need to improve on: Only ONE server while busy inside and outside. A female manager or supervisor who is more into just sitting at a table With either family or friends barely made an effort to show us where to sit... The phones kept ringing.. once in a while the manager would take an order but most of the time the one server &/or hard working busser were answering the phone to take orders: while also taking orders, serving & clearing tables!! I could see the utmost frustration & panic in their faces. Waitress was going to cry once but the manager wasn't seeing that but THIS patron did!! ....If you are busy you would At least come to the table and say "thanks for your patience we will be right with you" - We got nothing... We sat there 20 minutes and finally got up and then the manager finally stood up and I said "we are leaving we have sat here 20 minutes and no one has acknowledged us" and then of course she said "oh I'll get some at your table right away"... It was too late... There were eother patrons who I overheard saying that we were never being helped... But the manager should've done it! may she couldve poured coffee and water for us while her one server was working her butt off... or helped clear tables! That's what you do but the manager decided to just sit there most of the time Finally a group of nine were waiting to cash out and they had to stand up and move to the cashier to give them the idea that they had been waiting and wanted to leave as well... Bottom line is the customers should not be telling the management what to do... It's a no brainer you come over to a table and say thanks for your patience we will be right with you...and help your staff!! Very disappointing ... read more

This place makes me happy, especially sitting outside on a beautiful weekend morning eating breakfast. The food selection is basic but very fresh and nicely prepared. The lunch menu is basic American fare and some great Greek dishes. The gyros and salads are really good and they have a great sandwich selection. The people are also very nice and the the service is pretty good. read more

After recently returning from Greece, we wanted to enjoy a Greek lunch back home. We loved our lunch at the Union Cafe. We shared the spot on spanakopita, I had the delicious chicken souvlaki and my husband devoured the gyro. The tzatziki sauce was perfect. We finished with a very good and generous slice of baklava. The staff was very friendly and attentive. We will be returning to check out breakfast and will most certainly return for the delicious greek cuisine! read more

This place is a one of a kind. Busy small brunch spot on Union Street close to the other shops, and businesses on Union. My husband had the steak and eggs special (13.99) his food looked and tasted great, eggs a bit bland and looked like maybe one scrambled egg but he enjoyed it. I had the short stack with house syrup, now the syrup is the sad kind the one you find in Smuckers plastic containers that's usually left on the table, for any other upgraded syrup there's an additional charge, which is kind of annoying for 2 pancakes you don't get any fresh whipped butter or proper syrup, it was all in plastic...so my breakfast was a disappointment. Annette was really really nice. These four stars are for the excellent table service and she was happy to explain the menu and welcomed us to the neighborhood. Would I rush to come eat here, nope. Have I had better breakfast at diners in the Capitol region yes, several in Albany and Colonie. I liked the cozy feel and we got there before the Sunday Crowd, we came at 8:30 am and were seated immediately at a booth. I just visited Union Cafe for the first time and loved it! Took my family there for breakfast, and it was the classic diner food that I was wanting (eggs, pancakes, toast, home fries, etc). The tables were mostly full the whole time. The food was great and the service was excellent - really friendly and frequently checking on us. They made my daughters pancake into a Mickey Mouse shape. I'll definitely be going back and wish I knew about this place earlier. read more

I went here for breakfast on a week day morning and it was a great experience. The establishment presented as clean and bright with sunshine from the big windows. The staff appeared to be happy and enjoyed working here. My coffee never reached half empty, as they diligently filled my mug often. This was my first visit and kept it simple with the breakfast order. I went with eggs over easy, hash browns, sausage, and wheat toast. It was all very good. The Union Cafe will be a my go to breakfast spot in the Nisky area moving forward. read more

I went here with a party of five, on a Sunday morning at around 12 PM. We were told we were on a 30 minute wait, and then were outside for 45+ minutes. Once actually seated, we waited for almost an hour for our food. The waitstaff took forever to refill coffee, and were also quite rude as they repeatedly reached over one guest without acknowledging it, and took that same guest's plate while they were still chewing. For 60$ worth of food, that is absolutely unacceptable. We were also charged extra for lettuce and tomato on a veggie burger, and extra for American cheese on an omelette. read more

Delicious!!! I love going there for breakfast on the weekends. Their breakfast specials are a great price ($6.99 for eggs, toast, hash browns and a choice of meat: sausage bacon or ham and unlimited coffee). I really like their cinnamon raisin French toast. It's nice to sit outside when the weather is nice. It's gets busy and sometimes you may have to wait a bit but it's worth it. read more

Excellent addition to upper union st.! This place is a fantastic diner with amazing Greek lunch options. I live super close, so I go here a lot and it's always consistently great. 3.5/5 Came here with my boyfriend on a Saturday and it wasn't as packed as we thought. We sat outside on the patio under a shaded umbrella. We initially sat at a table without an umbrella, but as soon as the sun came out of the shade, it was too hot to sit comfortably. The waiter was fine with us moving our table which was nice. I ordered the 3 buttermilk pancakes with strawberries and my boyfriend ordered the same with Canadian bacon. We decided to split a 3-egg omelette with mushrooms, spinach, onions and peppers so we could get some type of protein in. All was delicious. It wasn't extraordinary whatsoever IMO. Service was fine. Waiter wasn't as attentive and it took a while to get our check, but it was probably because he had tables inside the restaurant as well. My only complaint would be that the menu is a bit pricey for breakfast/brunch food. A dollar or two knocked from most items from the menu wouldn't hurt. read more

Picked this place for brunch while visiting family. Was planning to eat breakfast but once we looked at the menu decided to get some lunch options. I has the grape leaves, others had the monte cristo, French onion soup, Reuben, and chicken wrap. Everything was delicious. The minor Greek vibe was surprising but the Greek options were tasty. The monte cristo was very meaty, the sweet potato fries were thin and crispy. Definitely recommend this place! The service was excellent and they even gave the kids a cookie at the end. read more

Union Cafe and its staff were amazing. We decided to Yelp the local breakfast spots and Yelp came through with Union Cafe. The location and front yard patio setting was great to people watch and enjoy a filling breakfast. Hector and his staff engaged in conversation being that we were from out of town. They recommended some site seeing spots and graciously posed for a photo for our vacation scrap book. I highly recommend this restaurant establishment for its food, atmosphere and warm service. I came in here for brunch with mom to celebrate her 65th birthday! We had a very nice meal, and the service was phenomenal. I'm so happy to see a local business doing so well, and doing things so right. The restaurant is spotless, and looks brand new. The menu, in true Greek fashion, is large and has a lot of options. My mom's waffles were particularly scrumptious! This place has a wonderful community feel, and it's obvious that they treat their employees like family. I will definitely be back! read more

My parents and I were some of the first customers this morning (Sunday). Breakfast menu had very limited Greek emphasis. In response to a question about ingredients, informed by server that the corned beef hash is from a can. Service started fairly attentive but diminished somewhat as server took on tables outside on the patio (we were inside). Food reasonable in quality, but I noticed a big variance in food amount by customer for same menu item (2 eggs, bacon, potatoes). I honestly left pretty hungry, and considered ordering a 2nd breakfast down the street. Small portions have not been present in ANY of the other places I have eaten in Schenectady during my visit, so this was a surprise. May try in a future visit for lunch. read more

So I wrote a review on the Facebook page of this restaurant and the owner started attacking me accusing me of working there which with seeing how she treated her staff, I would NEVER even want to work for her. Not to mention I have zero serving experience. So she got a real bad attitude with me after I commented on how awful she treats her staff and how she belittles them and she clearly got very upset! Anyways, the food isn't even all that great and after witnessing what she does, she will never get my business again.! She seems crazy! Someone who owns a restaurant should always be happy to do so. Making sure she can correct her staff in a formal manor. Definitely didn't see that and it was just sad!! read more
