Union Market has an amazing assortment of food/produce, best oatmeal in the morning and great selection of certain products; however, sadly, the staff is the most unprofessional I have ever dealt with in the neighborhood. The salespeople, cash register staff are repeatedly rude, talk as they 'help' customers, at times openly obnoxious.. I stopped going to UM only for that reason, even high prices were less of an issue. Mostly staff. Thats sad, miss the good chocolate and peach pies. A terrifically fun place to shop for a gourmet cocktail hour or party -- and you don't even have to work for your groceries! Not as fun if you're prepping a big, varied feast. You'll find beautiful produce, a vast olive bar, nice breads, and a huge cheese selection (in that way, it's a lot like Whole Foods), but it's a small store and there'll invariably be something missing that you really, really needed. I don't need to mention that it's expensive, right? But the staff is very friendly, and will cut you stupidly tiny amounts of obscure delicious cheese with a smile. This + the grocery next to the 7th Ave Q for staples/unusual ingredients + my corner bodega (what's a bodega called if it's owned by North Africans?) in times of desperation == almost all my grocery needs. read more

This is a very good place to shop for organic items. The home delivery staff: Ladey and Gelsey are super cool at directing customers to what is fresh and useful for your home cooking needs. Amanda the manager is also a sweetie. The delivery gents also are extremely friendly to my dogs and our kids! Love that this market is in our hood! In a neighborhood dominated the ubiquitous Key Foods and bodegas, Union Market is just about the only gourmet grocery store around. Their cheese selection is fabulous, their breads are perfectly fresh, the produce is immaculate, and the fish and meats are gorgeous and mostly organic if a little limited in selection. I love their hard-to-find items like blood orange juice. I just wish the place was bigger and sold things like broiler pans so it could be a one-stop-shop and I'd never have to set foot in Key Foods again. read more

I usually shop at the one further south in Park Slope, but this Union Street Union Market carries almost the identical items, if not more...in what appears to be less space. I am a cook, a baker, an eater - you name it. Sometimes, my recipes use ingredients that I can't seem to find at Keyfood, Associated, or Ctown. And somehow, I always find myself at Union Market and find what I need. Yes, the products are quite expensive but the market houses a lot of items you won't usually get for your typical supermarket or grocery store. Every time I step into any Union Market I am elevated to taste-bud heaven. I have to start by saying that in no way can I afford to actually do my grocery shopping here- but if I need something special or want a nice, healthy, and yummy lunch I stop in. I've been to this location countless times and every time it's fully stocked, very well organized, and extremely well lit. The space is a little small making the place a bit crammed when there are people in (say around rush hour, ie. 5-7pm). We stopped in to grab some lunch and had some honey glazed carrots, some jalapeno broccoli rabe, some wild rice with almonds and cranberries, and lastly some good old mac and cheese with chicken legs and all was extraordinary! As mentioned it's not cheap but it's also not as expensive as other places in the area. Highly recommend coming here for some great quality meat, cheese, fruit, preserves, and other! read more

This place is pretty good, especially if you are looking for specialty items last minute. I don't go here as a default for everyday groceries (that's what Trader Joe's is for) but sometimes when I'm too tired/lazy to trek down all the way to Atlantic, I go to Union Market and can usually find what I'm looking for, albeit pricier. The cheese, dairy, coffee, ice cream, bakery, and prepared food sections are my regulars. The turkey meatballs are default dinner on Sunday nights. Everyone who works here is pretty nice and helpful. So if you can get past paying 20% more for an item in exchange for convenience, then this place is for you. read more

I have shopped here quite a bit since I updated. It is pricey and people bitch about that but with the turn of the tide in Park Slope there are people who think nothing of dropping $80 on prepared foods and some fancy cheese. I will say the offerings of baked goods has kinda suffered in terms of what is there. (which I believe coincided with the whole section moving back by the cheese) Curious to see how the recent opening of the long delayed Whole Foods affects things. read more

This store is alright. I mean, for example the selection of cheese is pretty comprehensive and all dried tomatoes,olives, etc. from the salad bar aren't too bad either. Then there's salad, drinks, wine, organic vegetables, and so on. All in all, lots of good stuff. What makes it difficult to give a 5/5 here is the price range. Is organic food really that expensive in the states? Or does it have to be? :) E.g., I paid like 11 bucks for a really small salad and a drink the other day. This is a great 'market'. Seriously they have a huge fruit section with regular and organic fruit and veggies. they have a nice fresh cheese selection. sooo many types of cheeses, and the man behind the booth is very helpful with getting you what you like. The deli section is sweet too! the staff is so friendly and willing to help you. its not cheap here, i dont recommend doing all your grocery shopping here, but its a great place to get your specialty items. read more

Galore of organic/gourmet groceries! I really like coming in here. One of the favorite grocery market. However, the prices for some groceries are rather on the pricey side. dairy products like yogurt, cheese (huge selection), milk, and bread is quite affordable. But some groceries are a little overpriced, like biscotti's are like $10 per bag.. now thats quite expensive. Yeah I can see that it's "gourmet" biscotti, but still.. $10!? .. fortunately there was a tasting of the biscotti at the hot food counter, and honestly it definitely wasn't worth $10. I wouldn't recommend coming in here for your daily grocery shopping, unless you don't mind the hole in your wallet. We are short on normal grocery stores in the South Slope, so I end up going here more often than I would like. It's convenient that they take plastic even if you spend less than $10. They do have lovely and gourmet products, but I do not need lovely and gourmet all the time, I need groceries. Their prices on many items are just absurd and it's hard to figure where they get off charging so much. (I'm not talking about just the gourmet brands; I mean things you can get anywhere else for 25% less.) I do have to give a shout out for their brand of eggs--taste as good as farmers market eggs and only 2.99. And the Five Acres brand of local milk--you can taste the difference. That is worth paying a bit more for. But for everything else...go elsewhere. Though that might require a bit of a walk. read more

There were free samples EVERYWHERE and they weren't the past-expiration, day-old-pastry free samples most places stock. When Union Market first opened, we were so thrilled. I really feel the store has gone down in quality and it's so important that we as consumers seek out stores that have consistently fresh produce as it's so easy to pay a high price for a rotten fruit or vegetable that may look enticing but is actually old. Check the produce! The oranges for example that have real price tags, may not be fresh! And speaking of price tags --WHERE ARE THEY? Half the products are not labeled. Is this intentional? Every time I pass by I need to go inside, and every time I go inside I am amazed at how many cool looking items they can fit inside a tiny corner store. I am also amazed at how expensive everything is. I understand, it's the slope, you get what you pay for, but the Coop and Associated are just around the corner. I do love their cheese and juice selections, and the counter folks are always super nice. I have Ben in The hood for 20 years , I know pretty much all the options in reasonable distance, it became my fav not long after I started shopping there. Veg selection is great, cheese milk products - they have everything I like, surprisingly they have limited but high quality fish and meet counter, and I am saying that after shopping for years at mostly staubitz and paisanos. The only thing I really want to point out is the prepackaged meat section like sausages, dogs etc. Number of times I purchased vegetarian sausage or hot dog by mistake, it ended up in my dogs bowl, I strongly urge UM to clearly mark the Fake Meat section and make it separate from the real thing. No disrespect to vegetarians, it just doesn't work for me. read more

I have shopped at union market in brooklyn ever since they opened their first store. Recently i have been going to the new Flatbush store. I have to say the service there is terrible. I tried to buy tuna there today and they refused to cut the large 2+ pound fillet into smaller normal serving pieces saying that's the way it came from the wholesaler. Um yeah and if i were paying wholesale prices i wouldn't ask it to be cut either. It was so ridiculous - i pointed out that the swordfish had clearly been cut into normal sized pieces and he said yes they had been cut in half but the tuna loin was larger... I pointed out that all the more reason to cut it into smaller pieces and he started arguing with me and accusing me of calling him a liar...um alright. Never again at this store. Maybe the owners are a bit overextended because no one should pay so much for so little. read more

Don't buy the quiche! I bought the ultra-pricey UM quiche lorraine just in case it was great. It's terrible. A quiche is a savory dish. This one had an overly sweet crust and a custardy, dessert-like filling. No discernible trace of onions or bacon. My apartment is equal distances away from Ace Supermarket (slogan: "This box of pasta since 1985") and Union Market (slogan: "This box of pasta for $19.85") - and when I'm sick and just want some soup I usually end up going to Union Market and overpaying rather than worrying about getting lead poisoning from the can of Campbell's at Ace. And let me give credit where credit is due: Union Market has lovely artisan handcrafted organic chicken noodle soup. In general, everything at Union Market is lovely. It is a beautifully curated boutique supermarket where you can pay vast quantities of money for very nice products. But unless you are rich, or too deathly ill to make it the extra one block to the Associated (no judgments - I feel your pain), there is really no reason to shop here. You are paying more for the (admittedly very pleasant) shopping experience than for the goods; the same high-quality stuff can be had from Trader Joe's for a lot less. Furthermore, the pleasantness of the experience ends abruptly at the checkout counter, where a surly individual will cram all your groceries into one bag without regard for breakability. (The meat counter guys, though, are lovely.) read more

This place is to me the prime example of the worst of what Park Slope has to offer: it's crowded with self-important people who don't give way even though they know you're trying desperately not to hit their toddler in the head with your basket; the food is way overpriced; the produce section looks like their clientele - presentable on the outside but stale and lifeless; the prepared food is just stupidly expensive and tastes like yesterday's leftovers (which is essentially what it is). Even if the food was simply unavailable anywhere else in the neighborhood (which is untrue), or it was remarkable enough to go out of my way to shop there, I just can't stand the atmosphere. Snobby moms with their noses stuck in the cheese, obnoxiously loud free-form jazz playing all the time, dads and younger men who look like they're trying to impress themselves (and whomever is coming to dinner) with their gastronomic comprehension... but most of all, the poor staff... they are clearly overworked and just not happy to be there. I'd rather the noisy Fresh Direct truck than all of that pretentious bullshit, thanks. read more

Nearly every time I go to Union Market I end up with soemthing spoiled, moldy, or otherwise past its date. Today it was Cashews--I opened them up; they taste like mold. I frequently end up with moldy berries, onions, and garlic which has turned green and is about to sprout. I've also been sold scallops that were bad. How is it possible that this problem persists? This is supposed to be a high end place (the prices certainly seem to indicate as much). Why can't they solve the basic problems that every other grocery store deals with? When things go bad, it's time to take them off the shevles. I honestly think these people are just ignorant about food. read more

I like Union Market for some things. Things like cheese and bread and hard to find spices. Those are all reasonably priced, high-quality, and delicious. The packaged food is quite expensive and the selection is not that great. Also the place is really cramped, it's impossible to share some of the aisles with people and for those of us who work full-time, who can only go evenings and weekends it's just too many people in too small of a space. That said, I've never had to wait on line and it's a great place for those hard-to-find items. read more
