Ok, lived in this 'hood three months now, probably shop here 3+ times a week. The coffee is GOOD. Wide selection, the UM-branded beans are great quality and well-priced. Cheese selection is brilliant, a lot of love clearly goes into it. Chocolate selection = dynamite. Beer selection needs attention though. The general feel of Union Market is really nice, but you're losing two fat stars for the surprisingly low quality of your checkout staff. These are some distracted, rude people. To be asked DEBIT OR CREDIT three times whilst waving CASH in front of a checkout clerk who's otherwise engaged in a raucous conversation about parties/Louboutins with another checkout clerk kind of kills the 'worth it' feel of Union Market. And please don't tell me it's my fault when your staff don't notice me because they're hiding behind an eye-level monitor to have a chat with their colleagues. read more

i'm not so sure about this place. first discovering union market, i i thought it was great. breads, cheeses, prepared foods, frozen, sauces, oils, ice creams, etc. then i realized it's so incredibly expensive and there's nothing spectacular about it. (they are the same folks as gourmet garage.) everything is good...but i don't feel like i get what i pay for and although this is usually the case in ny, many times with food, i can't justify going there and spending like i can at some other places. i'm a big fan of rotisserie chicken but every time i've gotten one, i just didn't feel great after eating it--and it's happened 4 times now. i feel like i'm a minority on this one, but i would rather get ripped off and love it! read more

Very mixed. Plus marks for the cheese selection and the lovely, knowledgeable guys who work in meat and fish. Rotisserie chicken is good. Big markdowns for the produce (always artfully presented, almost always tasteless - go to Bad Wife between 11th and 12th on 7th Ave for the best produce in the area). Fish counter is good but they set up late - dunno what time their delivery arrives, but I've walked in after noon twice and the guy was just putting down the ice. The aisles are narrow even by Slope standards, and get some PS parent in there with an SUV stroller and the aisles are impossible. I've noticed some very questionable behavior at the prepared-foods counter - like, no hand-washing or gloves when the worker returns to the counter from a break outside. And the checkout staff is indifferent and vacant, occasionally rude. read more

over the years i have acquired some city snobishness i am not proud of... i like bread from certain places, cheeses from other, olives of a certain kind and i like my handwash to be of a certain brand, my chocolate a certain kind, coffee from a certain peet's etc etc... union market seemed to have taken all my likings / obsessions and added a few others i haven't yet discovered and put it in one small cute little store! additionally, it is doggy friendly! unfortunately the downside is i never spend under 60dollars when i go here.. even if i am just doing a milk / fruit run. a big big thumbs up to union for being my one stop shop in bklyn x read more

But seriously, the samples at this place are abundant, and make it so that it's pretty much impossible to enter and not buy a bunch of (slightly expensive) delicious& high quality products. Great grocery store! People say it's expensive, but that's not exactly true. If you look at the price tags of some things (olives or cheese, for example), you'll notice that you will often pay less at Union Market than you would for lower-quality products at a large, generic grocery store. The fish and meat counters are very good, and the produce is generally good too. The main reason that I'm giving it 4 stars (and not 5 stars) is that they always play this intolerable jazz music -- it's very grating at a visceral level! Union market is probably one of the only stores located on 6th ave that has a variety of foods, drinks etc. The location is small but they make it work especially during download busy times of the day. If you're looking for a quick stop for a bite to-go Union Market is the best. Although I only go there for a quick bite to eat they also have a deli counter that I'm planning on trying! read more

I buy very specific items here on a regular basis: guacamole, whole wheat tortillas, a certain brand of thick Greek yogurt I can only find at Union Market & Gourmet Garage, & organic chicken cutlets. It's pricey but the quality is excellent. The guac is so fresh that it turns brown after only one night in the fridge - it's pretty delicious so it's not hard to finish in just one sitting. Great selection of different kinds of mushrooms. I wish they'd change up the prepared foods area once in a while; the same pasta salads all the time are getting repetitive. read more

Corine K? Can we chat? Having only one review on Yelp that is a refutation of all other negative reviews on Union Market looks fishy. Especially when you write things like, "YOU UNCULTURED SWINE! How dare you insult my employer, I mean... favorite store! You'll all burn for this! I would gladly give my first-born child in return for a pricey piece of cheese from my glorious store!! RAWRRRRRR!" I'm not buying it. Anyway, I too have visited Union Market, a shrine to everything Park Slope and one of the whitest places imaginable. It's a specialty store, so unless you're looking to get rid of some major cash, you're not going to shop here for your everyday items. But if you're looking for something special or different than the local Key Food offers, try this place out. *Update: I got some items here for a picnic this weekend and my advice is to skip the sandwiches ($7 for pretty small ones on baguettes) and instead, make your own beforehand. You'd have to be just as insane (or rich) to do all your shopping here as you would @ Whole Foods. However, for a great selection of cheeses, fresh breads, and olives, this place nicely does the trick. I've gotten steaks and chops from the meat counter and they were good, you've got to like the fact that they have thick cuts and you can make special requests with the butchers. The only annoying thing is the narrow aisles and the oblivious stroller moms who park their S.U.V. sized strollers diagonally in said aisles with no regard for other life forms besides the ones that sprang forth from ther loins...but welcome to Park Slope. read more

This place is great! When you need those hard to find high quality ingredients this is the place. They have a great selection of gourmet vegetables, cheeses, breads, meat, fish and all kinds of other fine items. It is pricey but you are gonna pay for the high end stuff, i dont care where you go. I'm excited to have this place in the hood but its not the type of place you want to do your normal shopping at. Its pricey but if you are looking for fun things for a dinner party or just something special its perfect. There is a lot of local stuff in here which I really enjoy. Some of the produce is kinda crappy but that could do with the winter. My favorite thing in this store is the pickles. They have a fun little bar with olives and stuff like that. I don't know why but I'm sorta obsessed with them. The cheese selection is also wonderful. Also good fish and meat selection. Like Dean and Deluca in Brooklyn. Sure, it's a bit on the pricey side but Union Market has a great selection of specialty foods and excellent cheese and olives. Having spent the last 3 years shopping at the 7th Ave Union Market, I'm a huge fan of this one, just a month after moving up the Slope. I don't find the prices that different than other places in Brooklyn - produce can sometimes be MORE expensive at Fairway. There are some items, more the whole grain-type-bulk items that are cheaper at other places (Back to the Land is a good try for those), but I sometimes still get them. What i prefer about this UM is that it's way easier to navigate and much less crowded that 7th Ave. Today is the first time I've encountered a line after 6-8 visits over the last month, and I'm attributing that to Irene worries. It's a tight fit, people can be annoying, Brooklyn is expensive - but after going to Key Foods on 5th Avenue and finding that many of the same products were the same price there, I'd rather stick to a small store focused on my own preferences. read more

We've used Union Market catering for platters for a few parties now and have been very pleased with them. The food is tasty, presented well and arrives in a timely fashion. They are open to cooking items not on their catering menu and the price is good for the quality of the food. It's cooked fresh very close to delivery time which I appreciate. read more

As we all know, everything is relative. I just love this place. Because of the selection of fresh produce, meats, cheeses, fish and seafood and stuff. But I really don't like it when I feel like someone is making a run with my money, which Union Market does NOT. Of course it's a tad expensive and it should be. But I have, on several occasions, seen or spent 25 % MORE at other stores in Brooklyn for the same thing. I love how cool Brooklyn has gotten and I love than one can actually do its grocery shopping in Brooklyn now! But many of those new stores have ridiculous prices (cause they think those yuppies will/can pay those prices) but I always felt that at Union Market I was getting good quality for my money. This is a great place to get things you can't get at regular grocery stores, but other than that you may want to keep walking. The prices are outrageous and the staff look like they hate their lives (also not helpful). Buyer beware of the prices you are getting charged at this store. I get overcharged at this store almost every time I shop there. By "overcharge" I don't mean that prices are high but that the price that rings up is higher than the price printed on the product or advertised. I average one overcharge per visit of about $1. It's not a big amount but it adds up -- and the principle really bugs me. Some examples include coffee, produce, ice cream, canned items. The staff always adjusts the price but it's usually a manual override (vs. changing it in the computer). They also don't go out of their way to apologize or otherwise make you feel like coming back. I've brought this issue up to the manager. His response was disappointing (i.e., keep bringing discrepancies to their attention). Bottomline: be aware of the advertised prices and watch the cashier. In case you are wondering, the only reason I keep going back is that this store is located just around the corner from my house. I would happily boycott it if it weren't so convenient. read more

beware the fish! this market is my fallback when the co-op or key-food dont have what i need, or i just dont feel like walking/waiting in line. for non-perishables its fine but pricey, but the meat and fish section leave much to be desired. first there are the ridiculous prices, but once youve given in to that, there's the quality that is spotty. today i bought some trout, which normally a decent place will ask you which you want, even show it to you. the guy quickly grabbed two and wrapped them. i was slacking off and didnt ask to see them...huge mistake. our evening bbq was screwed when we opened the package, and got hit by the stench. the scales were coming off, the eyes were shriveled (way beyond simply cloudy), and the flesh breaking apart. this lack of quality control is just gross negligence. never buy there again, especially when key foods is actually better and cheaper. read more

I've only been in the Slope for a couple of months (lived in Greenpoint for 10 years) and assumed I'd have to join the Co-op (that's what every single person insisted that I do). Well, before I got it together to go to orientation at the Co-op I shopped at Union Market... well forget the co-op! Who wants to work for their groceries? Not me. Indeed Union Market is a bit pricey but come on people, embrace your innner west village gay man and get over it. It's top notch and you gotta pay for top notch. They usually have a coffee special, a pound of ground or whole bean coffee for like $4.99 - Park Slope Blend anyone? I know, it's so yuppy, oh well. The fresh pasta is delicious, the cheese selection is fantastic and the vegetables! OH MY GOD THE VEGETABLES! Ok, I've never even heard of purple endive! They've got it. Fiddle heads? Got it. Baby zucchini? Oh sure, no problem. Anyhoo, my point is, they've got standard fair, lemons, avocados, fresh sage, tomotoes etc - all of it so fresh and beautiful. If you ever feel like you want to make something special for that special someone (even if it's yourself; I do that, I'm special, no?), you'll find funky, rare vegetables there, stacked high and fresh. Yes, great bread, great desserts, yummy fish and meat, decent selection of beer and high end bath products. And get this - THEY WILL BRING THE GROCERIES TO YOUR APT! I looove this feature (hello, Greenpoint, ya gotta get with the program up there!). Have you ever wanted to stock up on Fiji, San Pelligrino, cheese and eggs? How can you get that stuff home??? Union Market will bring it over for you within a couple of hours. You can even call in your order! How cool is that? I was going to have a party one afternoon and you know how it is, you've got to clean the apartment and get it looking like it's ready for a Domino Magazine spread, then you've got to drag 200lbs. of groceries half way through Brooklyn, prepare everything, put out the nice platters, shower, get ready, etc. Then you're so cranky from all the work that you end up drinking too much and telling everyone that you really love them a whole lot? You know? Well, calling up the ol' Union Market and having all that heavy stuff brought over took half the weight off my shoulders and took a lot of the stress out of hosting. one fantastic thing about this "specialty market" is the cheese section. i have to say that the service in this section makes it even more worth it. they are super friendly and know boat loads about cheese. you can always try anything and if you want something cut smaller for a better price and smaller size - they are happy to do it. read more
