I very much appreciated the small class size because it gave us more time to answer questions and for hands-on practice. Susan was our instructor, and she was great. She was both patient and eager with our questions, and quick to give a real life examples of the technical information provided. The two day course is perfect. The classroom day is heavy on safety and pistol knowledge. I thought that I wouldn't want all that information, but all of it was worthwhile. I ended that day comfortable with how a pistol works, how to handle misfires and hangfires, and how to safely grip and handle a pistol. I was initially nervous on the gun range day, but Tom, Susan and Michelle were so great - patient and encouraging. We were able to handle a variety of pistols and shot seated, standing with both hands and standing using one hand at a time. If found shooting oddly relaxing, and I zoned out a few times when shooting multiple shots at a time. I wanted to shoot more and if I'd had a gun, I could have. So if you have a gun, bring it with you (unloaded of course) and they'll work with you on your grip and shooting methods with it. It was hard to use so much of a weekend for this course (9:00-4:00 on Saturday and 8:30-2:00 on Sunday), but it was so, so worth it. Yelp 100 #60

The Tom Lowe Trap & Skeet Range is located in Southwest Atlanta off of Camp Creek Parkway. What do you do here? Shoot clay pigeons with shotguns. It's a lot of fun. Various online deals have floated around for this skeet range. Groupon is one example. I bought my deal through Tippr. Some of the deals are advertised under the business name "Deshotel Arms," which is the gun shop located at Tom Lowe. It's the same place. If you don't have an online coupon, expect to spend about $25 for one round (25 shots). This price includes one round of targets, one pack of ammo (25 shells), gun rental, and eye and ear protection. Successive rounds are less expensive since you're only buying additional targets and ammo (and not re-renting the gun). If you have never gone skeet shooting or shot a shotgun before, I highly recommend going to the free beginner's class at 10:30am on Saturdays. The class is very short, but is important because it teaches you safety, what to expect on the range, and how to properly handle and operate a shotgun. If you plan to take the beginner's class, you need to show up on time as they do not accommodate for late arrivers. There are several shooting stations on the property. Each available station is manned by a Tom Lowe employee whom you give your token to. One token is good for 25 clay targets. The employee stands next to you while you shoot. When you say "pull," the employee launches a target into the air for you to shoot. There are different types of target shooting you can do. The standard one has you moving between six to eight spots on the field. In the beginner's target shooting round, you stand in one spot and fire at targets that move from the low house away from you and the high house towards you. These are easier because you don't have to follow/lead with your gun as much. It's more of a straight shot. Always wear your eye protection when you're on the range. You never know when a broken off piece of clay will come ricocheting towards you. It will leave a mark. Also, be firm with the shotgun, against your body and your face. Some of my friends got sore from the recoil of the shotgun because they were too relaxed in their setup. You want the gun to push your head and body back as a whole, not kick back up and smack you in the face. Men typically shoot 12 gauge shells and women/youth shoot 20 gauge. You can request differently, of course. I shot the 12 gauge because it was standard, but I heard from Christopher P. that it's easier to aim and more fun to use the 20 gauge shotgun. The instructors were nice, but the employee manning our station was not very friendly. It felt like he did not want to be there. We all wished we had a different employee. It wasn't too big of a deal, though, because we still had a great time. It's just like Duck Hunt. Now all they need is a dog that pops up and laughs at you when you miss.

This range used to have a Groupon deal that they don't accept anymore, and it has been an even better place to shoot since they stopped doing that :) Staff is friendly and professional. Something that's different here is that the other shooters here are also always really nice. Whether it's cops in uniform with their service weapons or groups 20-somethings with a bunch of guns they brought in a dirty pillow case, everyone always seems cool. This is especially helpful for making my teenager feel more relaxed/comfortable.

I've taken one day SD course before and almost immediately forgot everything. Part of it, I think was because it complicated and involved some movements I didn't think I could do in a crisis. Unlike the other experience, the course that I took at KSMA was focused avoiding and getting out of the situation before an altercation could really begin. What Sa Bom Nim Beaty taught was how to feel more comfortable and confident with using our own body as protective and defensive tools. I really enjoyed the training, got a decent workout, met other women wanting to learn and share which was powerful, and by the end of the course, I wanted to learn more. What's also great is that he has equipment that you can use to get a realistic idea on what it feel like to hit a person. One key reason why I am glad I took this course is because of an incident that occurred this evening, which prompted me to write this review. My son and I were leaving an event and I saw something very odd about where we were. It was dark, inbetween a large building and a wooded area. We were about to walk past a car parked near a large dumpster when I saw a light flash. I was talking on the phone while crossing the street, then i notice a man near where we walkig who looked very odd. He was walking in front of us but yet still pacing himself along with us. I ended my call a d told the caller I had to focus. I put my phone away, chambered my keys in one hand and was prepared with the other. My son, to my surprised had turned off his music, was just as alert, and we quickly walked to the car and left. It may have been nothing. I may have over reacted, but once I got home and processed all that had occurred, I realized I used the awareness approached recommended by Sa Bom Nim Beaty in the course, and was prepared to try out the other skills, if need be. For that, alone, I am grateful, and would highly recommend the Women's Self Defense course, as well as any other program offered at KSMA.
