The town once went by the name Lick Skillet if ever the truth was told many towns of the era were called by that same name all boasting tales of the name's origin, from the food being so good or so scarce people would lick the skillets or the only scraps left to feed the dogs was for them to lick the skillets, I am sure the truth lies somewhere in between the myths. Although Bethany abandoned the name Lick Skillet, many of the town's features retain the name such as the Lick Skillet Plantation, a thoroughbred breeding farm, and the Lick Skillet Old Time Store. There is also a Lick Skillet Arts and Crafts Festival which includes live bands, food vendors, and exhibits by local artists and craftsman. Bethany was founded in 1840 long before barbed wire fences and paved highways marked the historic road that eventually became known as the "Old Shreveport Road" it originally was part of a prehistoric trade route from Dallas to Shreveport (not named towns at the time) established by the Caddo Indians. On the north side of the road heading east at the state line is a Marker placed in 1936 that reads: "Site of Bethany - A thriving town of the fifties - through it passed the Shreveport road over which many emigrants entered Texas". There not much left of Bethany now but lots of memories, I'd say by the looks of it the historic value exceeds the town's net worth, but I'm sure those that remain like it that way.

Cozy reading nooks, friendly competent librarians. Wonderful dark and heavy library tables and chairs set quite the mood as well as comfortable leather seating options. A bank of computers with printing options available and helpful staff for assistance. Perfect for tucking in on a rainy day or reading the many available magazines and newspapers! Enjoy the views through the leaded glass windows of the beautiful landscaped grounds and relax a while. You won't be disappointed! The librarian will give you a tour and share with you the history of this beautiful building. Not the usual type or style of building you would find in a small east Texas town. Built in 1934 during the Big oil Boom. In addition to being a Beautiful library, we spent a little time in the children's section. Great selection of titles and genres for all levels of readers. On the bulletin board we quickly checked out some of the summer activities. We live out of town. But if we were local this would be a place we would frequently come too.

It smells in here. It really does. I don't know if it's dust, or unwashed patrons, or if the…read morebuilding or carpet just need updating desperately, or what. It's also not intuitive, when you walk in, where different departments might be located. And ... there are always unhygienic members of the community lazing around in the entrance or out in front,... staring at you. In all fairness, I haven't tried the library's programming, interlibrary loan system, ebooks or other services - maybe they're spectacular. I hope they are.

Saturday. 6/2/18. So what makes this a five-star convention…read morecenter? Is it some massive monstrosity that requires its' very own area code, or actually houses several different area codes within, much like the behemoth convention centers in bells and whistles cities like New Orleans, and Las Vegas? Quite simply, no. However, does this convention center provide adequate and comfortable space for state-to-regional-type exhibitions? Absolutely! Yes, it does! Most importantly, I mean really, is can an individual don an authentic and full Wookie suit in the onset of a hellacious East Texas June, and not, I repeat, not actually, physically combust or burst into flames while standing in place, and the answer, is an over-emphatic yes!!! And true, as it were, that the temps outside today were a brutal, and quite unforgiving, if not hellish and humid, mid-90's-something, degrees Fahrenheit, the inside of this lovely facility was ice-boxingly refreshing and cool. 2018 Longview Comic Con guests, vendors, and visitors alike, were able to conduct their business, get their cosplay on, and just enjoy all the entire live-long day! I myself, did several comfortable laps around the convention interior, and I also sat comfortably through several interesting, informative, and entertaining panels. The convention center workers here were pleasant, professional, and more-than accommodating. They kept things moving, and quickly so. This building, and its' fantastic employees could more than handle just about any event that may come its' way in the future. I hope that they have the opportunity to do so. I also hope there will be another Longview Comic Con at this very location in the Summer of 2019! I will return if so! Excellent work, Maude Cobb Convention Center!
