Two were more than informative about the history. One was in one of the cabins, the other in the church. The Candy Cane fair was also going on with many booths with local handmade goods. Everyone was friendly. There were a few buildings I walked in to where I felt like I was interrupting something private. I look forward to coming back for future events.

This was once the training grounds for the Confederates in the war of Northern Aggression. No, the…read morewar was not over slave ownership 100%. The war was over states rights and not wanting a government who wants to dictate every move they make when they know nothing of the daily operations. I get that. Totally. Everyone who works here is a volunteer. Pulling up, there is no paved parking lot, you just park on the grass like a monster as it is beautiful, lush grass they have obviously spent a lot of time on to make look so good. Reenactments occur in November, right before the holidays where they close down. The huge house, you have to walk upstairs to enter the start of the museum and gift shop. I came in when the docent working was talking to another couple, so I just listened in to the talk. Evidently, there is some resentment that the land belongs to Camp Moore, but the state owns the building and has it appraised for much more than it is worth and they have to pay rent on it. Which makes me wonder who set this up? If this was an actual issue, why not build your own building and let the states building rot? There is also some resentment that this is not considered to be a State or Federal park, making it eligible for more funding. But, they don't get the traffic or the people coming to visit to make it worth their time, so it can be a vicious circle. I can see why there is no Federal funding because having been to a Federal park (like the Chalmette Battlefield near New Orleans) the docents there do not interject their personal opinions into the spiel about the need for separation of the State and Federal governments, and the State probably won't endorse opinions that there should be a separation as they probably need Federal funds for things like roads and schools and don't want to piss anyone off. The bookstore has many books on how the soldiers and civilian population lived in that time, books about jokes against Jews and MAGA hats (as if the current administration really believes in states rights). So, it all seems to be mixed messages. The video downstairs was interesting but not very informative. There seemed to be no elevator, so handicap accessibility seems non-existent. The walking tour, over grass, was nice. I would imagine a wheelchair bound person would have issues. The cemetery was also nice, and the reproduction of one of the buildings also. I am glad I came, but I would not suggest making a special trip just for this. If you happen to be on your way elsewhere, then ok.

I tried calling the number on their website, which is the same number that is on here and on their Facebook page, all to no response, even emailed them and no response. I have had some unexpected time off work lately and decided to just drive up. I was NOT disappointed. They are open Wednesday thru Friday and every other Saturday from 10a-3p. It is on a side street, park in front. You will probably have to ring the doorbell. Yes, it is in a converted house. The main draw is the Britney exhibit, which is in 6 rooms. The docent was very proud of everything, and all Britney has done. Evidently Britney got her name spelled with 1 t because her paternal grandmother was a war bride from WWII brought over by her grandfather from Great Britain, hence the spelling. Seriously, the docent is pretty darn proud of the town darling, and is proud of the fact that she is called upon to do floral arrangements for the family. There is a large room dedicated to all of the citizens of this sleepy community who served in all of the major wars of the last 100 years or so. It is a great source of pride. There is another room dedicated to the history of the city. The docent was just so proud of everything. This is exactly what I expected a small town museum to be. It is worth the trip to come. It is just over an hour north of the New Orleans metro area.

During my time in Baton Rouge and a rental car for a day at my disposal, I decided to drive up to…read moreKentwood, LA. As many would know, it's the hometown of pop queen Britney Spears. And there's a big sign on LA highway 51 northbound that said so. I know, I took a few photos of that sign. It was interesting to be here to sightsee, as I'm sure the town has seen many gawkers trolling around for the last two decades looking for Britney and/or her family. The town of Kentwood had seen better days for sure. Once in the town in Kentwood, I decided to stop by the Kentwood museum, just to see. I've seen in their website stating that they have a shrine dedicating to hometown heroine, Britney Spears. I've grown up with her music and her life way back when I went to high school back in the late 1990's, so it was a treat to actually be there in Kentwood and see Britney's humble beginnings in Kentwood before she went Hollywood. The museum itself is basically the size of a medium single family home. Not too big, but it ain't small either. The town of Kentwood, LA's website, even proudly displays that it's Britney's hometown. I guess that's their claim to fame. I arrived at the Kentwood Museum on a random Wednesday afternoon after driving on the I-12 before turning north to I-55 heading towards the Mississippi state line and Jackson, MS. Kentwood city limits is about 5 miles away from the MS/LA state line, so that's kind of awesome. The museum is located at 204 Avenue E in Kentwood. I was told not to photograph anything, so I just happened to appreciate what was being displayed. I must have spent about 30 minutes looking and appreciate all the Britney related items here at the museum. While they didn't have a formal admission fee, I decided to chip in a small donation. Cash only for that. They have a pretty huge parking lot next to the museum, so that's always nice. It's always a nostalgic experience to venture back 20 years into the past when I was in high school and Britney was getting her start in the music industry. For the most part, visiting Kentwood, LA and the Kentwood museum had been a sightseeing adventure that's often overlooked, especially when you are a fan of Britney herself and of her music. You're basically driving to the middle of nowhere Louisiana, so best believe that it will be worth it, just to say you've been to where it all started. The Britney exhibit was pretty cool, with a replica of her bedroom in her childhood home as well as some moments from her high school days. There is about 4 rooms in the museum that's dedicated to Britney herself. It's definitely well worth the drive to see Britney's hometown, if you are in the area or somewhere relatively nearby. I mean, if you are a super fan or just someone who has grown up with Britney and her music, it's in your best interest to visit once in your lifetime. 5 stars, just because of the huge nostalgia involved. It's not everyday you get to travel and see this kind of thing. I'm glad that Britney is in my generation and just 2 years younger than me. I've enjoyed my time at the Kentwood museum here in Kentwood, LA. I hope you will too. It's sort of like going to Graceland to see Elvis, but Britney is very much around. Support local! A+

I have nothing against barn animals, per se, but they tend to attract bugs and I can't go there. Anyway, Kentwood is a nice enough place. I only spent a few hours there and a local told me, and a friend I was traveling with, not to stop on someone else's property because we'll be shot. I can't tell if she was serious or not, but she got her point across. There's a whole lot of woods and a whole lot of deer and apparently hitting them with one's car is something that happens pretty often. I even saw a dead one on the side of the road. Lovely. Someone else told me where Britney Spears' family lives in town, but I took their word for it. All in all, Kentwood isn't a bad town, but I doubt that I could live there. I'm a city girl and I don't like it when things get to quiet.

It gives you time to actually feel it... and if you're a Skynyrd fan, you'll probably hear "Free Bird" in your head whether you mean to or not. It's a little off the beaten path, but honestly--that's part of what makes it special. This isn't a flashy tourist spot. It's a place of respect, reflection, and remembrance. If you're anywhere near Mississippi and love music history, this is one of those places you don't just visit... you remember.
