I found it by mistake some years ago and now I make it my stop for everything that I need to mail of importance. It is out of my way, but it is worth the trip and here's why. There are two amazing people that work there most of the time . One is the Post Master, who is a lovely lady. She is very charming and helpful in all instances and extremely friendly, and the other is a man named Derek. He also has wonderful qualities which just make you feel secure and know that your packages will get to their destination. I have brought both of them multiple packages quite often to go out of the country , and now with the new EU rules it's quite a tedious process to fill out the correct forms and do the things to be certain that everything goes smoothly. The nicest thing is that if something does not go well they are on it immediately and I have found that unfortunately that is quite different than many other Post Office's . Several days ago I mailed a package to Germany and it is very important that it get there. I asked questions about a different way to send it by priority mail , and Derek had all of the answers. Even when I'm sure the questions are annoying both of these people make their customers feel special, and as if they are very important. In this day and age it's quite difficult to find that type of service anywhere. Thank you Derek for your professionalism and your kindness and your knowledge . It's really too bad that the post office can't clone you.

We just moved here and wanted to register to vote for the upcoming elections on November 8. After…read morewe sent the new voter application and registration via mail we received two letters back requesting additional information. Since we didn't have Maryland licenses we needed to submit either a copy of our passport or an article of official mail like an electric bill that had our current Maryland address in order to complete the registration. Instead of sending another round of letters we decided to walk down to the Board of elections office to hopefully resolve it quickly. After showing our IDs to the front desk we were shown to the office on the first floor. There's a bell to ring upon entering the office and someone came out to greet us promptly. The clerk was very friendly and helpful and after collecting our additional information and photocopying it, gave us our voter registration cards. She gave us additional information for early voting and a phone number to call in case we had any questions. Overall it was a great visit and was a lot easier to come down to the office then to do things through mail.

Some branches are actually located ON college or university campuses. And since lots of American institutions of higher learning now have need-based scholarships and financial aid, there is basically nowhere else in the country where you can find the geographical, class, and racial diversity as on the campus of a first- or second-tier school. Age-wise, things skew towards the 18-22 year old crowd, but of course there are older students, faculty, staff, and parents around, so it's an interesting sample, nonetheless. I used the Loyola University USPS branch quite a bit while teaching there in grad school. It was great! In the summer, when the undergraduates went home, the staff left out all the magazines and newspapers (for free!) to which students had annual subscriptions (They were too young, impetuous, or irresponsible to cancel them for the summer months, or this was not allowed by the mags and papers). Stuff like the NYTimes, Maxim, People, Martha Stewart, Oprah, Time, Sports Illustrated, Wall St Journal, US News & World Report, etc. That gets at least one star for being so cool! Then, this branch was run by an amazing duo of female staffers (one white, one African-America, I think) who were funny, efficient, and patient with students who demanded packages all the time. I mailed many things internationally, including books and applications, and they never blinked. Express mail to Toronto? 2nd Day to NYC? Priority to Peoria? It was all good. So, maybe location matters in a DIFFERENT way than I had been approaching this. Maybe it has to do with a mixture of WHO uses the post office WHEN and for WHAT purposes. Students, for example, don't send a lot of Christmas cards, since they are already home on break by then. And, if they fill out tax forms at all, they typically earn little and can use the 1040EZ forms, so the April 15 lines are also short. Hmmm ... I need to think more about this.
