When you go in through the entrance there is a coffee shop on the left and then they have a used bookstore which was where we were headed. The actual library is through another set of doors to the right. We spent quite a bit of time in the bookstore going through the wide selection of used books they had available. I found one book on the racks they had out in front of it and then stumbled across three more I wanted while inside. All four of the books I bought happened to be Stephen King novels but they had a lot of other good choices. My kids picked up a couple of books for gifts as well while we were there. The people working the store were very friendly and helpful.

Extremely professional polite employees. Located on the corner of US 192 and Partin Settlement Road next to the tag and tax office. They offer trainings here for when you apply to work for the elections. Pre voting is here also and the staff for that is just as nice. I pre voted and I was no and out in under 3 minutes with a line. That was great. Again, very helpful courteous staff.

The Florida Historical Marker Program is one of the Division of Historical Resources' most popular…read moreand valued public history programs. It raises awareness of Florida's cultural history while enhancing the enjoyment of historic sites for residents and tourists. The blue historic markers tell the stories of the people and places that were important to Florida's history and they can be found in front of churches, schools, roads, archaeological sites, battlefields, and historically important buildings. I discovered this marker in front of the former Women's Club of Lakeland across from Lake Morton. Women's clubs were very important to the development of Florida. The Lakeland Women's Club was founded in 1912. Historically women's clubs were formed as a way to give back to the community. They became a way for women to get out of the house and assert their independence. This then allowed women to get involved in politics and launched the women's rights movement. In 1923 the Lakeland Women's Club purchased this site for a colonial revival building designed by Lakeland architect, W.B. Talley for their clubhouse. The colonial revival style of architecture was introduced to Florida in the late 1880's. The clubhouse was built at a cost of $13,000 by the Billman-Purdy Construction Company. The clubhouse is part of the East Lake Morton Residential District, which was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1993. Historic marker F-414 was installed in 1999 by The City of Lakeland Historic Preservation Board and the Florida Department of State. Today this historic building is a law office. The General Federation of Women's Club was formed in 1986 by a merger of the Woman's Club of Lakeland, federated in 1912 and the Sorosis Club federated in 1922. Before the merger this building at 59 Lake Morton was sold and meetings were held at the Civic Center, churches, and private clubhouses until 1994 when a new clubhouse was dedicated. The Lakeland GFWC is still in operation today fundraising throughout the year through fashion shows, bridge parties and food sales to support the Salvation Army, Catholic Charities, Special Olympics, American Red Cross, Child Development Center, Hacienda Girls' Ranch for abused girls, R.O.C.K. Camp for children with cancer, Boggy Creek Camp for children with serious heart conditions, Canine Companions, Good Shepherd Hospice, March of Dimes, Talbot House Free Clinic, LVIM Lakeland Volunteers in Medicine a free clinic for those with no medical insurance and VISTE Volunteers in Service to the Elderly.

The front reads, "Settlement of the City of Bartow began in 1850 with the arrival of James D. and Eliza W. Green. In 1851, the Blount family, led by patriarch Readding Blount, settled near the site and eventually purchased the Green homestead. This site would become the homestead for members of the Blount extended family and twelve enslaved persons forming the earliest pioneer community at what was then known as Peas Creek. "The Third Seminole War (1855-1858) brought renewed uncertainty to the growing community. Families sought safety in numbers prompting the construction of a block house at the Blount family homestead, leading to the area being known as Fort Blount. "During the American Civil War, the post office at Fort Blount was named Bartow in recognition of war veteran Francis S. Bartow (C.S.A). In 1866, wealthy cattle baron, Jacob Summerlin donated 120 acres of his land in Bartow for public use. Summerlin's land grant included 40 acres for a courthouse, establishing Bartow as the seat of government for Polk County." And the reverse, "On July 1, 1882. twenty-two male residents of the community, both black and white, voted to incorporate the City of Bartow. These residents adopted a city seal to include the Latin phrase, "Rus In Irbe" which was later rewritten to "Urbs in Rure" meaning "town in the country." 1882 Incorporation Voters: F.F. Beville, S.C. Roden, G.W. Smith, J. Snoddy, T. Tucker, F. Wilson." This is marker number PCHC-039 and it was erected in 2024 by The City of Bartow Polk County Historical Commission.
