I've switched electric utility suppliers more than once using PAPowerSwitch.com and whenever I've…read morereceived a price quote, it's always been for my out-the-door, bottom-line monthly price. So when I saw Astral Energy advertising their Ultimate Power Plan™, described as "Unlimited Electricity For A Flat Monthly Rate," and requested a quote, and received one, I gathered based on my personal experience--as well as their repeated, verbatim promise that I'd "pay a fixed monthly rate, and no hidden costs"--that they meant what they said. Silly me. Turns out, with Astral Energy, one low fixed rate refers to the "supplier side" of the bill only, and that "no hidden costs" means "lots of hidden costs, just not discussed on your price quote but buried in the Terms & Conditions." And if you agree to those Terms & Conditions, like I did? Neener neener neener; it doesn't matter what we said before in our advertising or on your price quote. You agreed to those T&Cs. Pony up, consumer! Net net, switching to this "flat-rate, no-hidden-costs" supplier resulted in my budget billing actually GOING UP. Needless to say, I canceled my contract as soon as I discovered this business practice. While Astral Energy was good enough to waive my Early Termination Fee, they refused to reimburse me for the difference in the increase. It's beyond misleading; it's just blatant, false advertising. I attempted to resolve the issue with two different Astral Energy customer service representatives, Charles and Elizabeth, and when that didn't work, via the informal complaint process with the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission. I intend to keep my complaint open in appeals, and encourage anyone who's had similar experiences to pursue the same path. PA residents, we should not allow predatory suppliers to exploit the deregulation of our public utilities. You can submit your complaint and documentation at https://www.puc.state.pa.us/consumer_info/transportation/motor_carrier/limos_taxis_movers/taxi_complaint_form.aspx.

There is one important lesson everyone should learn in life: Almost nothing in life is absolutely…read morefree. If it sounds too good to be true...it isn't. I was kind of dumbstruck this month when I saw my Mom's electric bill. We have solar energy. JCP&L is just a secondary company to us in case we go over our usage. However, to date, we generate a lot more electricity than we actually use and never get a charge from JCP&L. So, when I saw a nearly $30 charge on our JCP&L bill I was kind of frantic. I called JCP&L and they couldn't figure the charge out. They then told me that we had some kind of relationship with another company called Astral Energy. I contact Astral Energy and the representative I talked to really couldn't explain the charge. She was kind of fumbling as to what it really was other than to say it was some kind of excess charge that we received credit for but shouldn't have. So, I immediately canceled my account with Astral. Our home is flooded with spam calls from these third-party companies who promise savings on your electric bill. More than once my Mother has gotten conned into signing on with these companies. She doesn't know any better. I have had to make many phone calls to cancel these relationships and then have to scold Mom and tell her not to talk to these people who offer savings on electricity. I mean, why a company who is aware we are contracted with a solar provider would promise us savings is beyond me. We generate our own electricity. We don't get electric bills. And this is how I feel we were absolutely conned. You don't get something for nothing. In the end, this company somehow charged us $30 for *something* that they couldn't even properly explain to me on the phone. I suspect they weren't making money off of our deal and they somehow snuck that charge in. I get to read other reviews posted across the Internet and it seems that many others feel like they have been "had" by this company. Again, nobody can offer you savings on your electric without a way to make money. It's like the discount deals you get with the cable company. In the end, they are going to jack up the price at the end of the relationship and if you are not on top of it you have to pay. Please just stick with JCP&L and don't get involved with these companies that promise you savings. Eventually, you'll end up like me paying a $30 bill that the company can't even explain.
