FYI- Gina does not own this shop any more!!!!!! I'm extremely unhappy with this place! I took my wedding dress in to get altered, thinking this place was still owned by Gina, and it has new owners/new staff. They don't speak english very well, so its VERY difficult to communicate with them. I don't think the tailor speaks any english at all. They are NOT experienced. Weddings are stressful enough, and I didn't need added stress by arguing with this woman every time I came in for a fitting. She tried to tell me that I had to fold the hem of my lace trim edge at the bottom of my dress. Any experienced seamstress would know that you do not double fold the hem of lace trim edge just to shorten it. I left this place crying, several times, unhappy, and worried about how my dress would turn out. Never going back here!! read more

Don't bother. I brought a vintage dress to be taken in at the waist and bust. The first time, the waist was brought in way too much and the bust wasn't touched. When I asked about the bust, she tried to convince me if was supposed to be loose. When I went back for the redo, I could hear talking in the back. The front door chimes as you walk in and I said hello twice. I was ignored. I had to look in the back to get someone. As for the dress, the waist was still a little tight (if I were to eat even the smallest of appetizers I would be very uncomfortable) and the bust was still loose and puckering. That is not how this dress is supposed to fit. I walked out without a word. I'm going to let Yelp do what it's here for. And take my dress somewhere else. read more

I took a sheepskin jacket in that was too small, that I'd been told by the seamstress at my dry cleaners could NOT be made bigger. The ladies at Universal were professional and quick about helping me and did a wonderful job making this very difficult jacket into one that fits me perfectly. I can't even tell how or where they enlarged it because the seams were very small, but somehow they did and I am thrilled with the result. They also restructured a velvet blouse about two sizes smaller for me and could not have done a better job. I've now just left a number of other garments there to be altered and I will check back in on Yelp to update my review when I see how they come out. The ladies are pleasant enough. They are working in the back but each time I've been there, someone has come out in less than 30 seconds. They speak enough English to understand what the customer wants without a problem. Reading some of the criticisms of their language skills or their personalities makes me ask myself why those are necessary qualities in a good tailor. So far, they've done excellent work for me and I'll continue patronizing their shop until and unless proven otherwise. read more

I went to pick up my order & my debit card was refused because it was under $35. I was told to leave & come back with cash. I think since this was my first time visiting their company they could have made an exception. Instead, they were super rude about it. I had a skirt hemmed here a while back and needed it done that day for a job interview. They charged me $55. I was screwed and knew it, but had no option. Today I returned, after reading other Yelp reviews and not realizing this was the same place. Just for fun I went in and asked for a price on hemming a dress (no lining, nothing tricky). They wanted $30! My grandmothers would be rolling over in the graves if I paid that for a simple hem. Not sure what people are used to but the service is not great and the prices are ridiculous. Luckily, I remembered that the dress was a gift from Nordstrom's and that I can have it hemmed for free instead of paying 1/3 of the price of the dress to have it done at Universal. read more

Gina at Universal Tailoring is the EXPERT at altering Jeans. I've taken 10 pairs of designer jeans in the last 2 years and they come out looking like they just came off the store shelf. Not just hemming, but also adjusting width at the bottom. I'm pretty picky about alterations, and Gina has always come through. I should note that I'm not an employee - if your like me you always think businesses with 1-4 reviews and 5 starts are just employees, well I'm not affiliated with Universal Fashion & Tailoring at all. I was getting quoted for $200 for work on my dress that cost 400...I brought it here because of a bridal shop reference right down the street. She quoted me at over $200 bucks and said that this is a good price for a lot of work....feeling stressed and guilty for her taking the time to pin my entire dress I tried working with her to bring it down...finally 170 was an "okay" price but she seemed irritated as hell! I felt so uncomfortable leaving my dress with her and she said come back in two weeks...well miraculously it was done in 6 days and the top of my dress is ruined. The heart shape fabric puckers out because the sleeves are too tight...I'm so upset...now I have to hope and pray another seamstress can fix this to look more tasteful. Over priced and she will tell you it's a "lot of work"...complete bogus! read more

Sigh! I took my wedding dress here to get it shortened because the bridal shop where I got it no longer has a seamstress. So I brought it here and they gave me a fee of 1/3 of what I paid originally for the dress...only for cutting the entire bottom (not a complete hem). I went with it thinking that every place would be around the same price. After the first fitting, it still needed to be shortened. During that fitting I asked her if she could add cups, and she said, sure sure (didn't mention any fees). So at the final fitting she charged me an additional $150. I asked her what for. She said it was for the CUPS (that were barely sewn in) a 3 clip bustle, and bc I wanted my dress steamed. She said that all of those extras were a lot of work....REALLY?! $150 for fabric cups and steaming?! I used to work at a bridal shop, and used to do most of the bridal dress steaming. It's not that much work, not $150 worth. Seriously! Needless to say, they overcharge, are sneaky with their fees, and not very good. read more

Gina is the BEST. My bridesmaids dress was relatively complex and layered (i.e. hard to fit and alter), and looked completely wrong when I first received it from the dress company. I took it to Gina, and a week and a half later, it looks absolutely STUNNING. i think she made it better than what the company could have ever hoped it to look like, and there is no hint of alterations at all. My dress had been missing a clasp part of the hook-clasp, and while i didn't even point that out to her, she put it in for me anyways! She is an absolute sweetheart and her work is magnificent. read more
