I had the most appalling experience at this branch and it was with the manager, Brandon. I stopped by the teller Edith who was very kind and tried to be of assistance and a strange activity had occurred on my savings account that neither of us understood. She turned to her manager Brandon to look at it and figure out what could have happened. He had no customer at the moment but decided he needed to talk to another employee at that very moment and tell us to hold on to figure out his own thing. I waited patiently u til he finished but he didn't stop there, instead took on two more customers that came way after me and when I questioned him about it, instead took spite he said that I can have a seat and when he feels like it he will try to help! What??? The look and expression of Edith was alarming that he was doing this to me as much as it was to me. Poor Edith gave me the branch manager's information Armando for me to contact. Brandon is setting a bad example as a leader of his team and it's obvious that he must be related to Armando for being a manager there because after 2 messages to Armando I received no response. The video surveillance of this interaction is very clear. I will make sure that my voice will be heard and he be reprimanded for his actions. Brandon is unprofessional, spiteful, discriminatory and his behavior is unacceptable as a leader. You should be ashamed to have a leader acting like this. read more

I did a mobile deposit for a large check and they're gracious enough to release some money and I can respect the 2 day hold. The government check issued and kept delaying payment and made me wait over a month and I will be complaining against them. But UCU really helps me out financially in a bind. I used to come to this bank all the time because they offered Shared Branching services. It was very convenient for me to get my rent check on the 1st of every month since my credit union is located too far away. However, for the last three months, I've come in at the beginning of the month and have been told by the same employee who is a tall African American gentleman who never seems to wear a name badge that the Shared Branching network is down. It's becoming hard to believe that the system is unavailable every single month when I need to use it. I'm very disappointed with both the service and the customer service I've received recently. Awww so sad to see negative reviews for this bank. I've been a member since my mom opened my account in elementary school. I use their debit and credit cards as well financed an auto loan from them. Their new renovation is definitely modern and bright. Their old one reminded me of the dmv. There's two tellers in the back and one in the center. I usually only go inside to withdraw cash and to escort my mom when she has questions about her account since she's a boomer. I forgot the staff member who helped me with my auto loan but she was so sweet. I think she got married a few years ago. When I go with my mom, we always end up being helped by Ryan. I've been banking with UCU for many years now and I haven't had any issues till now. The customer service is just a Joke. My debit card was compromised a few nights ago and the fraud department was very helpful, until I had to call the bank back to obtain a new debit card. The people on the phone are so incompetent. Then the person helping states that I'll be receiving my new debit card in the mail in 7-10 business days. Sorry that's not going to work as I need access to my funds to pay for things. Then when asked to speak to someone to help speed the process up I was then told I would receive a call in 1 business day. Absolutely ridiculous! I'm sure they don't care but I will be leaving this bank! I wouldn't recommend any one to bank here if you asked me! Well, it's been almost six months since the reply to my first review and I still haven't heard anything from anyone at the credit union about my issue (stolen UCU card, loss of 1,300) in spite of a reply saying they would look into it. Pasadena Police handed it off to Monterey Park Police since a few of the withdrawals were in Monterey Park, they contacted me and I never heard back. All the have to do is review the ATM camera footage to establish it wasn't me. For the police, it's not a lot of money but for me it was. My latest credit union adventure is that they debited 110.00 as a monthly payment to my overdraft then bounced my rent payment even though, if they applied the overdraft, it would have covered it and charged me an NSF fee of 30.00. I know this is a computer system not a human but there's flaw in there somewhere. I've never had a rent payment rejected before read more

I am in the process of closing my account due to the ridiculous fees. You would think if I haven't used my account in 6 months and a transaction goes through that makes my account negative someone would reach out. They charged me fees on top of fees and when I called today have it rectified they would have some decency and compassion. They also do not have a notification for returned check, negative balance, instead they charge you RELENTLESSLY.I was charged THREE times in a row for insufficient funds for a auto pay bill that was posted the day before my check. After that I decided not to bank with them. I can't wait to write the CFTB about these predatory practices. I joined University Credit Union specifically because of their First-Time Buyer program, which is supposed to help members with little or no credit build responsibly. As an 18-year-old college student, I joined to responsibly start building my credit. I started with no credit ,and after following the program and raising my credit score to 709, I applied again. This time, I was told my second source of income had to be at least six months old -- even though I have been employed full-time at the same permanent job for over three years. It's confusing and disappointing because the program is supposed to support first-time buyers, yet my experience shows inconsistent application of the rules. I hope the credit union reviews their program policies to ensure they truly help members who are trying to responsibly build credit. read more

This review is solely for Alexander who was the nicest and most helpful staff at the UCU branch. I had the pleasure of being served by Alexander on 5/20/24 around 10am ish. Teller #5277. Waiting in line, I was hoping he would be the one to help me bc of the customer that he was helping prior was smiling and thanked him so kindly. I wanted the same service. I was having issues and didn't know how my issues can be resolved. As the other customer left, Alexander greeted me with a warm smile and kind gesture. He was patient, helpful, and friendly. His smile made me at ease and the transaction that I thought was difficult turned into a pleasant experience. I was texting my husband to make sure that I was doing the right transaction and I felt bad for keeping Alexander from other customers but he was so thoughtful and said it's fine that I shouldn't worry bc he wanted to make sure that I have fulfilled the reason why I was there and that I was confident of the transaction I was trying to make. Entering the building, I was afraid that I couldn't fulfill what I needed to do but Alexander came to my rescue, provided me with some helpful options, and I left pleased and achieved of the purpose for my visit. Alexander deserves this shoutout bc not many tellers have the gift of serving great customer service. He looked like he enjoyed what he was doing. He deserves to be recognized and should be a trainer or mentor to other staff. I walked in and no one said a thing to me, not even good morning or welcome. Until I met Alexander. I've been a member for 30 years now and counting and I've only been at the branch for a handful of times. The branch has had a major facelift, it is very nice and well designed but how nice is a place if it felt like entering a ghost town? If you are elderly, hard of hearing, have dementia or speak another language, don't bother signing up for this bank. After some years, my father who has declining health wanted to close his UCU. They refused to let me translate and accused me of feeding him answers. He gave the wrong address due to his dementia and they told him he needed to come in to the branch to close the account. The refused to give him another opportunity to give his address and would not let me help him. They tried to do a live verification in which they asked even more ridiculously difficult questions that I couldn't even answer. How the hell is he supposed to close the account???? They are heartless and cruel and make closing an account extremely difficult for elderly people. Stay away!!!!! read more

I usually don't leave negative reviews, but as someone who used to work there and currently works in Customer Experience, I found this service to be terrible. I just spent over 30 minutes on a call with four representatives who couldn't assist me. I have a refund processed by a merchant, but it was credited back to a card that was closed due to fraud. I allowed the 10 business days for UCU to receive my refund, which will likely fall under an exception report. I explained this to the representatives. The first rep transferred me to Card Services, but they said they couldn't help and needed to transfer me again. When I reached Card Services (without a warm transfer, by the way), I had to reiterate my situation once more. The Card Services rep then informed me that I needed to speak with someone in Risk because I went directly to the merchant for the refund, not through UCU. When I asked why I needed to talk to Risk about a legitimate refund back to my account, they couldn't provide any answers. I was then transferred to another rep in Risk, who wanted to send me back to Card Services. After explaining my situation again, she offered to have a specialist call me back instead of assisting me directly. When I requested to have someone contact me today, considering the time I had already spent on the call and the lack of resolution, she said the only option was to call me back within one business day. It shouldn't take 4-5 people to get a resolution or a direct answer. If you don't know, just ask your manager--don't dismiss the customer. read more

Again! After speaking to 5 Credit Union and card services staff I still have a $6000 error on the UCU app which prevents me from using my UCU Credit Union credit card. The last person I spoke to said there was a technical error and said they would call me back. Never called me back. One week after posting a payment to my card it is still not showing. Tried applying online, was told to come into the branch to verify credentials. I attempted to open an account twice in person. No one approached me and was told by the only banker who was also a teller I would be next. I waited patiently to be assisted. Banker continued to helped the line, even though other tellers were deployed. I was excited to take advantage of this credit union, but simply not worth it. It seems like they aren't organized during peak times. There was no option to schedule an appointment. I've been a satisfied member of UCU for a little over five years. They have always worked with me on things that I've needed in the past although this last time I'm actually very disappointed. I had wanted to refinance my electric vehicle and applied online through the app. Based upon my history, I was given a pretty reasonable monthly quote. I was very optimistic until a rep named Amanda B reached out to me. As soon as I answered the phone and picked up on her tone, I blurted out I didn't get approved did I. Her energy and voice was negative but she did say I was approved. After submitting the information she requested, we spoke on the phone and she said my credit score and debt to income ratio wasn't good enough to get any breaks with refi. I've taken out loans and purchased cars through UCU with some truly remarkable people but from the start Amanda fucked up my whole vibe and approach because of her low energy somewhat combative stance in her conversation. I know now, when I want to open a CD in about 3 months to avoid her at all costs. read more

My family has relied on UCU for virtually all of our banking needs for decades. Although there were minor annoyances from the outset (including systematic failure to follow banking privacy laws, automatic suspension of accounts that were dormant for a year, etc.), our relationship with UCU generally felt authentic and human. Representatives were warm, rates were good, and the minor irritations were more than balanced out by the institution's willingness to bend silly rules when circumstances warranted. Just before the pandemic, however, UCU's attitude towards its members suddenly became as cold and exploitative as one would expect from any big for-profit bank. UCU's loan rates went up sharply, even as its depository interest rates plummeted. For over three years, the difference between what UCU has offered on CDs and what comparable CUs has offered has exceeded 3% - even as UCU has continued to rake in profits from its loan products by charging as much as any big bank. At the same time, UCU updated its fee schedule to enact draconian penalties on anyone seeking to move their money elsewhere. The resources that used to go into customer service and providing low rates appear to have redirected to profit-seeking, constant re-branding, a needless branch rennovation, and elaborate sponsorship deals with college sports teams in Texas. Over the past four years things have gone from bad to deplorable. We have experienced many of the failures and disappointments others mention here and elsewhere, including being less and less able to reach anyone who has the knowledge or power to provide any meaningful assistance, to bizarre problems with debit cards, to having important loan paperwork lost and misfiled. It has become clear that banking with UCU is simply unsafe--not to mention enormously unpleasant, costly, and time-consuming. The institution's commitment to the local community is entirely gone. Accordingly, my family is in the process of withdrawing all of our assets from UCU, and moving them to more responsible and community-centered institutions. UCU Management: what you are doing is not working. If you keep up the behavior that has been underway for the past four years, the exodus of long-time members will only increase. Stop focusing on branding, profit-seeking, and sports sponsorship deals. Recommit to the community that you supposedly exist to serve. Into 2025, they are still requesting for the insurance information for the same auto loans. They already charged me $1260 twice on both of my cars!!! It's $1260*4!!! They reassured me to pay first and it will be refunded. As of now, I have not receive any refund and yet again, they want to charge me for the third time. I need to pay ~$3800 for auto insurance per year and they are adding $2500 on top of it. What the heck is going on? When I made inquiries, they just directed me back to the Insuranceinfo website.
