I've been going to this dry cleaner for 20 years. The elder owners have retired and the next generation is now running the business. Yet, everyone has been friendly and has done excellent work. I had an evening gown altered for an event where I was one of the mistresses of the ceremony. My gown was perfect! I always prepay so I can send someone if necessary. One day, I couldn't get back before closing and needed my clergy robe for the next day. They arranged for me to pick up my robe at the nearby restaurant. That is service above and beyond the norm. This is my go-to dry cleaner. There aren't any reliable dry cleaners in downtown, so I always drive up to midtown to visit University Cleaners. Don't judge their work by the exterior- it's deceiving :). They have been very organized throughout covid and are currently taking temperatures and minimizing the amount of groups in the store at one time (as of 5/14). They can also hem or lengthen garments, but will not do full alterations FYI. I had to get a dress lengthened and it wasn't cheap ($42) but they got it done in 3 days! read more

It's strange to see negative reviews about University. For 7 years they have been fast and done a great job with cleaning and alterations. Maybe I am putting too much weight on being greated by my name as I walk in the door but I think that has value and shows that this business cares about its customers and community. read more

Ugh, been meaning to write a review. You know in the beginning I used to like this place. But then I realized all of my clothes I have ever taken there have holes. I don't know what they are doing to my expensive clothes but they are ruining it. Now my clothes won't last and I'll never take back. All my expensive Jcrew & Banana Republic stuff. The last straw that really pissed me the fuck off was I brought in a beautiful Kate Space 600$ dress. SILK. See attached photo of how beautiful it was beautiful. Since I work at the University this dry cleaners is very convenient for me. Yeah, it doesn't appear clean, it's a little seedy, but they do a good job dry cleaning my clothes. Never had any issues with them. The only thing is if you park outside you have to feed a parking meter or chance getting a parking ticket. Me, I would rather put the quarter into the meter, but this new parking meter system in Detroit you have to go out of your way to get to the meter. Oh well, this is not the establishments rules/regulations - it is the "D"s problem or access to funds! I will continue taking all my clothes that need to be taken to the dry cleaners to this establishment because of the convenience and the workers inside have all been nice to me. read more

Extremely fast service. My clothes are clean, but.... You know how if you iron stuff too fast, it puts creases and wrinkles in weird places? Well, literally everything that required ironing looks like that. The pleats at the ends of my sleeves were paid no mind, causing all types of odd wrinkles (as you can see). I specifically took business attire into them because I didn't want to have to do this myself, and it looks like I'll have to do it anyways. I only went here because someone suggested it, I'm going to stick with the one on Trumbull. When I've taken stuff into them it's always come out perfectly pressed. read more

I've been using University Dry Cleaners for five years and although I don't often have a lot of dry cleaning for them to do, they have willing done a number of other small related projects including taking in sleeves on jackets, re-weaving a tear in a woven jacket, and washing/disinfecting a very nasty (but expensive) bag that someone left a banana in over the summer. They do an alright job, but my most recent experience involved them giving me an outrageous quote on two repairs/alterations, which they only admitted could be done after I walked them through it (I suspect they just didn't want to do it). I literally am near tears (mostly because of principle...I understand it is material). I have patronized with this cleaners since I moved to Detroit. I brought a J. crew double-serge cotton skirt here to be cleaned; when I went to pick up my skirt there was a black mark on the skirt. The male owner asked me to leave the skirt and he would get the marks out. When I return this week to pick up the "newly cleaned" skirt it was destroyed...I have pictured below what it looked like. The desk attendant advised for me to return today (Friday) and speak with the store owner to make it right, as they had been away for a funeral. The owner looked me in the face and said, "You brought this skirt like this with all the stains." Even the desk attendant knew he lied. Never ever patronize with a business that will look you in the face and lie. Please do not trust your well cared for garments at this cleaners. read more

They probably deserve one star, but I gave them a bonus because they're cheap and fast. That said, their quality of work and customer service is well below average. I went there for a few months because it was near my apartment, and I frequently received clothes with old stains that weren't cleaned, new stains that weren't there previously, and wrinkles. And the customer service wasn't much better. The employees are terse and dismissive. One time I pointed out a stain I wanted cleaned, and the person didn't even respond to what I said. I've recently started going to Clifford Street Cleaners instead, and they're much better. High quality cleaning and great customer service. read more

I wish I could give them zero stars. I saw they had low stars but they were so close to my house I figured I'd take the chance. I really wish I hadn't. I took 3 dresses to them. Out of the 3, only one came away undamaged. They checked my dresses at the start and everything was fine but then they called me back to show me a stain on a dress that was very clearly bleach and they insisted it was already on there (i dont use bleach in my house). Another dress came back with shrinkage. DO NOT EVEN CONSIDER THIS PLACE. take the extra 5-10 minutes and take it to a drycleaner with a better reputation. I wish I had. read more

I brought in a cocktail dress to be cleaned. There was a stain on the front from a spilled beverage that I had pointed out when I dropped off the dress. They told me it was removed and when I picked it up, and upon inspection, it appeared to not be visible. When I got home in better lighting, the stain was very clearly visible. The dress is unwearable. I have also noticed they attach their tag label onto the item of clothing. The tag attached to my dress was attached in an area where it left two holes. This is unacceptable. If they need to mark their items, they need to find a way that will not leave holes in the clothing. read more

I came here for probably close to a year consistently without many issues. I did get a few items back that had some stains but they were always able to fix it when they cleaned it again. However, about 3 months ago, I picked up a top from them to find that it had a huge mark on the front. I brought it back and they said they'd re-clean it, no problem and that it would be ready in a few days. After going back 3 separate times and it not being ready I was frustrated but finally it was ready. I was very disappointed to see that my forest green shirt was now black and the original stain was still there. Now, listen at this point I get it and mistakes, but my main issue with this is trying to pass it off to me like it was fixed when it clearly wasn't. They then insist that they can fix it and get it back to it's original color and they'll call when it's ready. Never get a call and every time I call the owner isn't there so I finally stop by to check on it and they were "trying to get in touch with me". I again gave them my number and also said I would look for the receipt for the shirt as they wanted to use this to make an insurance claim. I emailed and provided the receipt and yet again, yet to hear anything. At this point, I'm over the shirt but it is their lack of follow up and business practice that annoy me. If they're not going to do anything then just say that and I could move on but the constant "fixing" and saying they will follow up when they don't is unprofessional. They can make a claim all they want but it wouldn't cost them much to just reimburse me for the shirt and be done with it. It's also disappointing that as a once loyal patron they wouldn't take better care of relationships with their customers. read more

If you want your trousers to look like they were pressed with a waffle maker then this is the place to go. They can put horizontal, vertical and diagonal marks into the one pair. Go to Knox Cleaners. It's very close, better pricing and they do an excellent job. Don't be discouraged by the outside appearance; they know their stuff. read more

All in all, not a huge fan. After apparently having been spoiled by my last dry cleaners, bringing my business here was a mistake. At first, they put so much start on my shirts that I could have used it as drywall, and they persisted even after I asked them to use a bit less. Then, I had a shirt that came back torn from them. When I brought this to their attention, I was told by the daughter of the owner that it 'wasn't possible' that they had ripped it, but that they'd be glad to mend it. She basically told me that I was lying and that I was trying to get something for free. All in all, it's alright, but their customer service leaves a lot to be desired. read more

I don't usually review on yelp out of fear of sounding like a self important weirdo on the internet, but just wanted to say I live near by and have used them 20+ times over 10 years. Cleaning is always good, always on time, I never had anything stained or damaged. I also had some Indian traditional wear with tons of rhinestones done here with a special cleaning process that's different than usual dry cleaning, I was nervous but the owners son promised me it would be OK and it came back 100% perfect. I've had 3 alterations done, two hems and a support strap repaired on a dress. All done well and on time. read more

This cleaners either gave away my clothes or an employee stole them. When I went to pick up my clothes two weeks after I put them in for cleaning they did not have them! I had the original receipt so either they gave someone my clothes without the receipt or they were stolen by the owner or an employee! After numerous visits requesting either my clothes or compensation for my "Lost/stolen clothes", I kept being told that the owner would call me. Shirts are always wrinkled after having them cleaned. Wrinkles are in the worst spots (ie. the collar, the cuffs). All in all a pretty bad job. Can't seem to find a good dry cleaner in Detroit. read more

I took my nice wool coat here to be cleaned and my service was very sloppy. I was not told when to come pick my coat up before I left. I figured that because they put phone numbers on the tickets that they hang on the clothes, they would call me when it was ready. 2 days later I hadn't heard anything so I called and they said I can come get it at my convenience. I picked up the coat and went directly back home. When I took it out of the plastic, the belt that was in the belt loops was missing. I know that it was there when I dropped it off because I had never taken it out before. I called to see if they had set it aside somewhere and they said they would look and call back. They never called back and when I went back in person they pretty much told me tough luck. When I asked for some type of compensation (very politely might I add), first, the employee that I was speaking with blatantly ignored me, and then 2 others told me it was not their fault because the person that filled out my ticket didn't write down the belt as an accessory. How this is not their fault, I have yet to understand. Never again will I trust these people with things I cannot replace nor will I recommend them to anyone else because of the service read more
