I honestly can't complain about this spot. Not only do they offer full service which includes checking your tires air pressure and fluids' however, they also do brake tags and offer a few mechanic services. You'll find a car wash and it's basically a one stop shop. I personally appreciate the $5 tire check and just good graces lookaround to let you know what's going on. I hate putting air in my tires and am always willing to have someone professionally do it for me. Solid spot and location is less than a five minute drive for me. Pandemic update: Another year (or 2) and another brake tag/inspection sticker... now with social distancing! I actually remembered to get my new tag on time (because I put a reminder in my online calendar 2 years ago) so that's a win. And this Shell station was doing inspections again. (I think they only stopped for a couple of months in the spring.) So I drove over on a weekday (key) when it wasn't raining (also key) and waited behind one other car. We (my car and I) did the song and dance of hit the horn, turn on the wipers, left turn, right turn (signals) and reverse! and we got the choreography mostly correct. I really need to listen better. I was masked the inspector was masked. Cash was handed over. New inspection sticker. Done! read more

The man doing the brake tags is one of the angriest impatient person I have ever come across he is constantly giving you attitude for the smallest of things. If you are that miserable in your job they quit. Excellent service. I got a nail in my tire, I just needed to patch it. Nail in a tire is not life threatening, but those extra lights on my dashboard tend to distract me a lot. I normally fix that kind of things right away. So I ended up going to several tire places this morning. They all seemed very difficult about this simple service, asking me to come later because they were booked, I didn't have an appointment, I parked in the wrong place for service etc etc. This service station was on my way to work. I didn't have any hope, but I stopped by anyway. To my surprise, they looked at my car immediately. I was literally in and out in 5 minutes. I have been coming to this gas station for brake tags almost every year for twenty plus years. This morning I encountered a worker who was so angry, he was hellbent on fighting with me no matter what i said. He repeatedly chastised me for not handing him three pieces of paperwork plus my fee in one handoff (I handed him two) and mocked me for not following the sign. I apologized. Then he said I was the victim and started muttering about victims... I couldn't follow. He then said he was recording my interaction? When I asked for my registration back and said I would just leave he put the clipboard down and started speaking so angrily he spit on me. Been coming here for decades-- this guy seems very close to snapping and I will not be back. There's another place to get brake tags on Louisiana Avenue so I'll give that a try. Ugh. Completely unreliable. Do not go here. I arrived at 3:00 for an inspection. Their posted hours, which I read to the employee from their sign says open until 4:00pm. She said we are closed, as she was inspecting the car in front of me. I reviewed their hours 5 times with her. She and the male person with her said they are closed, despite their posted hours saying different. This is the third horrible experience I have had at this station. The brake tag inspector at the University Shell is a rude bully who does not want to work a full day. I arrived at 3:38 p.m. for a simple reinspection of my parking brake. When I pulled up behind a truck getting an inspection sticker, I could see and hear the inspector waving his fists and yelling at the driver for getting there too close to his closing time of 3:45. The truck had already passed inspection, as I could see the inspector waving the sticker in his hand while berating the driver for several minutes. He finally applied the sticker to the truck, waved me forward, and proceeded to yell at me for several minutes about coming before closing time. The reinspection of my parking brake took less than one minute. If the inspector had skipped the yelling at me and the driver in front of me, he would have been finished with both of us before 3:45. His final parting shout was, "You better come earlier next time!" There won't be a next time. read more

This is a standard gas station - no frills. I've never used their mechanic services. If you're going to use your Winn Dixie discount card, slide the big card (not the one that goes on your key chain) in first, then your credit card. easy in and out. I wish I could rate this place less than one star. I pulled up to the gas pump, and a man comes out and tells me that I need to go to a different pump because the one I'm at is more expensive. It was a full-service pump, I actually would've enjoyed having the full service done, and probably of tipped the guy. But apparently even though I'm in a brand new car, he did feel I could afford or would want to pay extra for full service! He spoke to me like I didn't know the difference between self serve and full serve. I picked this location to get a brake tag because it was closest to my house. The hours posted on the web are 8 - 12 on Saturdays. I arrived at 10:15. A man with a clipboard approached my car and began shouting at me, stating that they closed at 11 AM. I didn't argue and just decided to leave, but he kept on going and started shouting about a "giant billboard" with the hours posted on it and then proceeded to question my level of literacy. This verbal attack was not provoked in any way - the man was just nasty. I will not be stopping here again. I've always really liked this place when I was living on Calhoun. The mechanics are friendly and nice, and one of them even changed my flat into my spare for free when he didn't have the new tire I wanted. Well I went back to him a few days later when the tire came in and gladly paid him for his services. A few years later I gave the car to my mom and after a couple months she says the car seems to be running a little weird. She takes it to a trusted shop back home and this is what they found. http://i.imgur.com/fdzrcpQ.jpg If you can't tell, one of the spokes has been sliced off, and the tire can no longer be mounted properly. I was never told about this, and it was hidden with the new mounted tire. Not only is this shady as hell, it's fucking endangering the driver. I unfortunately don't have the invoice for this / live in New Orleans anymore so I can't take these guys to court, but if you need work done on your car, take it elsewhere. read more

The yearly chore of obtaining a Brake Tag for your vehicle can be difficult. I have been doing this since 1963 when you had to do it every six months. Businesses that provide the service today can be difficult to locate. They may be operational one year and gone the next. That happened to me this year when I had to seek out a new provider to fork over more money to our local government. Thus I arrived at the Shell station on S. Claiborne Ave. For me it is the absolutely best experience I have had in obtaining a Brake Tag. Service was fast and the two ladies running the show were professional and friendly. I have found a new place for this annual trek to avoid a traffic ticket. At this time the station is being renovated and the gas pump operation is closed. read more

I need to find a new gas station. I stopped going to their mechanic a while back because he has yelled at me twice. One of the gas pumps is full service which charges more per gallon but there is no sign telling you which pump it is so by the time you've gotten out of your car and swiped your card, the gas station attendant walks out and tells you to drive to a different pump. The pumps I always end up using don't have the clip that holds the nozzle open and you have to stand there and clench it. It would be safer if people had the option to sit in their cars. read more

I had the worst service here! I was in a rush trying to get a break tag and had recently been sent from their other location to this one. I got there at 2:45 a and the brake tag closes at 3:00...the representative had no cars in line and REFUSED to service my car! I explained that I had just been sent from the other location, she said she did not care and I had to come back. She had THE WORST attitude and was just rude for no reason! This place commits highway robbery- I always knew they were higher with their gas prices than anyone around - but I went in for a simple tire plug the other day which anywhere else will cost you $5-$10 at the most. The mechanic sent me inside to pay while he started on my tire. When the cashier told me the total I almost fainted- $27 for a tire plug. The mechanic already started otherwise I would have taken my car somewhere else. I'm all about people making money but this was ridiculous and I feel totally taken advantage of. I have left several messages for the owner to tell him how I feel and have not received a call back. I will NEVER patronize this gas station again. I came to this gas station to get an oil change. Who knew it would cost me around $46 for an oil change?? I didn't have time to go elsewhere, so I bit the bullet. The only upside about the oil change was that it only took about 20 minutes. The guy who worked on my car was less than enthusiastic to be doing any work. It took a couple of minutes for someone to help me. Once my car was finished, he went back to playing on his phone while I stood there and waited for him to see me. Gas is overpriced. Mechanic is rude and lets you know you're ruining his day. When I used to get work done here, I would routinely have to wait 2 hours for an oil change. And then, the mechanic would try to upsell me on additional work. "No, you've already taken two hours for an oil change, I'm not going to wait 2 more hours for you to change my oil filter." In addition to wasting your time, you're still overcharged for it. I'll sometimes get gas here, because, yes, it is very conveniently located. But, NO WAY I'm ever getting service here again. DO NOT EVER GET AN OIL CHANGE HERE! I needed an oil change quickly before my drive back home for summer and since we were in a rush I had my boyfriend take my car here because the sign said free car wash with oil change and I needed both! Well the oil change cost $50 and the mechanic couldn't start the carwash so I didn't even get that since he was too busy smoking cigarettes next to oil... When I got back I had my dad check my car because it was running poorly, well turns out the idiot mechanic somehow filled my spark plug holes with oil in the process of doing this over priced oil change and my spark plugs were completely submerged in oil! Clearly the mechanic is incompetent and lazy and just trying to rip off students even if it puts them in danger! read more
