I had been less than enthusiastic since our last tandem bike jaunt in DC left me ragged and looking forward to the end. We rented a tandem bike from a known rental in DC; the bike was rickety and took effort even on the completely flat route we were on. My GF found Pedego and opted for the tandem electric bike. This was a 180 degree experience from the other rental company jn DC. The owner was friendly, attentive, enthusiastic and really made us feel welcome. He knows his bikes gave us a quick run down that made us feel comfortable. The bikes are impeccabley maintained and he's thought of everything including helmets, storage pouch, bike lock, flat tire kit etc. He was even extremely well versed on the route to Mt. Vernon. Every pointer he gave us was spot on. We made it to Mt. Vernon and enjoyed food, history, and culture. The way back was fun since the bike did all the work, electric is the way to go for tandem bike long hauls. I plan on coming back to buy some accessories for my own fat tire e-bikes. This was a memorable experience that was easy and affordable.

One bike completely fell apart during the ride. Half of our group had to walk the last 2+ miles of the ride. Instead of apologizing and reimbursing us for the faulty bike, we were told that it was a new bike and out of their kindness, they wouldn't charge us to repair it. In addition, when we arrived at 9am there was only one employee working and several groups ahead of us. We had to wait 30-40 minutes to get our bikes. With the late start and having to walk 2+ miles, we were late for the Mt. Vernon tour and our time there was rushed - we barely made it to the water taxi. Not sure what more I could add. It was a horrible experience. Not recommended - unreliable bikes, poor service.

Everyone that worked at the establishment was helpful and attempted to ensure that your bikes were well matched to the person's height and riding style. Be careful on this tour this is only a guide in the front and the rear of the group. If you have a slow or timid rider this may not be the tour for them. One of the people in our group fell after hitting a fellow bicyclist. The trail is really packed this time of year and may not be suited for inexperienced individuals. Although I really enjoyed the tour, I wish they spent a little more time going into the history of the cherry blossom's in DC. But alas, nothing in life is perfect.

My nephew was just a kid and like me, loved having the freedom of a bicycle so I decided to give him my old classic Stumpjumper. Well, my nephew grew up and got a car and one day asked me if I wanted my bike back which I very happily took back. But it had been sitting in the garage for years. I originally took it to two shops in SoCal and they both said around $400. Didn't have time to fix it before moving to Arlington so took my bike with me and took it to another shop in the area and they said $800! I wasn't crazy about that so came here to Big Wheel. The owner looked at my bike and was like, $150-200. I was like, naw my bike needs a lot of work. Why don't you hold on to it and let me know? Well, he fixed it up and charged me $200! All those other shops were going to buy me new wheels. He was like, I took a good look at your wheels and they're old, but you don't need new ones. You can ride those out until they blow. Agreed. He also said he could restore it (my bike was filthy) but what was the point? It's a mountain bike. Agreed. So replaced some cables, a spoke, tightened up all the loose joints, oiled and ready to ride. I rode it to my car from the shop and it rides great! Yep, this is the place.

I really appreciated that they didn't just fix it--they made sure I understood what happened. And the little details made such a difference: they even asked me what kind of music I wanted them to play in the store while they were working on my bike. Conte's was my local bike shop for a few years, and they generally deliver even if the prices frequently prove higher than they quote you. However, when Sean convinces you to splurge for the annual service, and you weigh whether you can afford to spend $229, and then he says, "actually it'll be $282 after parts and fees", do not agree to make an investment at Conte's without a written receipt. At checkout it becomes $334, Sean will pretend he doesn't remember your previous conversation. Barb will say, "they must have called you to confirm an increase", and when you show you were not called, she will forget about this policy and the price will stay whatever they invent. Knowing we only had less than 2 days to tour the monuments, in addition to the fact that my mother in her older age doesn't have as many steps in her as she used to - I was trying to get creative with our schedule to make the most of our time. A quick google search helped me land on this company. I always forget that the monuments in DC are quite spread out. Being on a bike is definitely your best option. I emailed the company on a Tuesday night before our trip and had a response immediately the next morning. Our guide Robert was very thorough, friendly, and flexible with our schedule. He also gave us a great suggestion to skip the Air and Space museum as part of it was under construction. He definitely knows DC quite well. He met us on the tail end of our visit at the Natural History museum and over the course of 3 hours we were able to see the Washington monument, Jefferson memorial, Mason memorial, MLK, Lincoln, Korean War, Vietnam War, and finally ended near the White House. We also would have had time for one more if we didn't take a break for lunch. Highly highly recommend this if your needs are similar to what I described above. Robert will give you a lot of historical context along the way.

The draw back: being stuck with people in your tour group who have a hard time picking it up. Knowing this I googled rentals and I found DC Segway Rentals and spoke to a really nice guy. Not only did he have availability but HE ALSO CAME TO US. Within half an hour of calling we were on our segways taking in the sites at our own pace, seeing what we wanted to see and staying places as long as we wanted to stay. Aaron... the guy we spoke too was a great resource as DC had changed alot since I lived there. Let us know about the new MLK memorial and a couple new restaurants. In the two hours we reserved we saw absolutely everything there is to see on the mall. We even put down our segway and grabbed a quick ice cream. We even made it to the Jefferson and just hung out on the steps taking in the view. Amazing all around. I moved to the US almost 25 years ago and although I've always wanted to go, I've never been to DC…read more So when I finally made the pilgrimage last week, I wanted to absorb as much of the city as possible and decided to take a Segway tour - some friends had recommended it. We met with Aron, he gave us a brief intro on how to ride and we were on our way within 10 minutes. Aron showed us all the sights, he waited for us while we took pics at the Lincoln Memorial, and was very informative and not boring or mundane as some tour guides can be. This is the best way to see DC, don't think twice.
