Unfortunately, we did not have a good experience. We rented 9 bikes for the Mt. Vernon ride + water taxi back. All 9 of the bikes had issues with gears. One bike completely fell apart during the ride. Half of our group had to walk the last 2+ miles of the ride. Instead of apologizing and reimbursing us for the faulty bike, we were told that it was a new bike and out of their kindness, they wouldn't charge us to repair it. In addition, when we arrived at 9am there was only one employee working and several groups ahead of us. We had to wait 30-40 minutes to get our bikes. With the late start and having to walk 2+ miles, we were late for the Mt. Vernon tour and our time there was rushed - we barely made it to the water taxi. Not sure what more I could add. It was a horrible experience. Not recommended - unreliable bikes, poor service. read more

The cherry blossom tour well worth the $40.00 fee. The trip was for 3 hours and included a 15 miles bike tour of the beautiful cherry blossoms. Everyone that worked at the establishment was helpful and attempted to ensure that your bikes were well matched to the person's height and riding style. Be careful on this tour this is only a guide in the front and the rear of the group. If you have a slow or timid rider this may not be the tour for them. One of the people in our group fell after hitting a fellow bicyclist. The trail is really packed this time of year and may not be suited for inexperienced individuals. Although I really enjoyed the tour, I wish they spent a little more time going into the history of the cherry blossom's in DC. But alas, nothing in life is perfect. read more

My husband and I like to cycle, so we decided to make cycling apart of our summer vacation to Washington, DC. We decided on the Bike and Boat tour out of Old Town Alexandria, as we'd be doing plenty of walking around Mt. Vernon. We arrived at the shop from DC by Metro. We used the transit directions we had, which took us on a bus near the shop. We could also have stopped at the King Street Metro Station and taken the free King Street trolley to the end of the wharf (recommended). The friendly staff had the paperwork ready for the three parties who were taking the trip that day. They confirmed that we were who they thought we were, and we filled out the necessary legalese. We were issued Trek bikes in good shape with comfortable leather saddles, helmets, U-locks and keys, and a map of the area with the trail marked. The trail was easy to find, and there were several signs along the way to guide us through Old Town. This is a pedestrian-friendly city--foot, dogs, and bikes are all very much welcomed. After finding the trail, we were off for a wonderfully scenic ride along the Potomac, where nature and sailboats abounded. The trail was well-maintained and crossed roads very few times. It is a well-used track, with many cyclists and joggers out that day. Most were courteous to each other. Upon arrival at Mt. Vernon, we located some bike racks just beyond the first parking lot and locked our bikes. We then proceeded along the path to enjoy our day at Mt. Vernon, stopping first in one of the shops along the way to cool off before additional touring outdoors on the very warm day. We toured the mansion, grounds, museums, and short films throughout. We had packed our own lunch, and bought chips, drinks and ice cream there. We returned by scenic ferry, viewing the National Harbor (MD) and Old Town by boat. My husband and I both love being out on the water, so this was another highlight. We met a family of 6 on the boat, who had also taken the same tour. They, too, had only good things to say about their experience. After debarking from the ferry, we returned our keys and accepted our free, cold water bottle, courtesy of a Yelp coupon. We walked along King Street, enjoying a few shops that were still open (Many shops close at 6PM). We ate dinner and continued up the street to the Metro station. There is definitely some good with Bike and Roll but there is also definitely some bad. The problem is that the good comes simply from their location being in a major tourist area and the bad is mostly related to a lack of customer service and to only having two staff members working on what seemed like a very busy Saturday. We made a reservation online to do the ride to Mount Vernon with tickets included to tour the mansion and the grounds. We arrived about an hour after the shop opened and were greeted very nicely by the two people working there. After this things went downhill. I spent more time with employee #1 fiddling around with the pre-departure paperwork than employee #2 spent time explaining how to find the Mount Vernon Trail, explain our bikes gearing, reminding us about the biking "Rules of the Road", or actually fully making sure that our bikes were ready to go. (My wife really appreciated almost falling a few blocks from the store when she realized that her seat wasn't fully secured and could very easily swivel around.) The other quirk worth mentioning is that employee #1 spent a bit too much time trying to sell me/make sure that we didn't want to bike the trail one way and take a boat back the other way. I don't know how popular an option that is, but it must be very popular as he seemed really surprised that we were going to ride both ways. (I mean that is the point of renting bikes is it not, to actually ride them?) On our return we apparently were showing up right after the return of "The Boat" so both employees were at DEFCON 1 ready to handle the masses while we were barely asked how anything went or how the bike did it was simply pay for this, sign that, give you that, and boom-------out the door since the line went eight or nine deep. If we were back in the area we would certainly consider using B&R but I will also definitely look at reviews and pricing from other companies first as while the location was great the whole check in/check out process was entirely too rushed and impersonal. read more

This is simply a customer service review. I understand that in cities parking is kind of a nightmare and its annoying when you think people have parked where they should not. However. When I park in a spot with your businesses name on it and get out of the car to rent bikes at your business and get told rather rudely we will have to move our car very soon because that's where the van comes to pick up bikes, I get a little less likely to want to give you my money. When I walk around the corner to try to see where we can move the car to and when we come back a second employee tells us we should really watch where we park because they were going to tow us you can just take your bikes and shove it. We told you we wanted to rent bikes. Treat the people better guys. Maybe then you won't lose business to the competition which is conveniently only a block away, a lot less cranky and cheaper. read more

Not having been on a bike since the tender age of 17 (unless you count spin class; which I don't), I'm not quite sure what posessed me to schedule the "Bike and Boat: Mount Vernon" package with Bike and Roll. However, the whole process was seamless and even DH agreed that it was his favorite part of the trip. Registration was easy, I got a confirmation email, which I brought on my phone to the pick up. They had the bikes ready to go, and we were out in 10 minutes with some stylish helmets and our B & R logo bikes. I'll admit to feeling like the nerdy kid in the lunchroom; with the wrong sneakers and a "peanut-free" lunch, when we first headed out. But, about 10 minutes in, when we got to the more heavily traveled roads, I was glad that ours called us out as "amateurs." No snags with the bikes, and the trail (about 9 miles) was clearly marked. I run 4-5x a week, DH is more of a armchair athlete; still, the "moderate" rating was spot on. Both DH and I had a good workout, and he was a bit sore; but nothing that couldn't be soothed by a few MV Harvest Ales. I was really impressed by the service we recieved, they even offered us the option to ride back if we decided against the boat, with just a simple cell phone call. Constructive Advice (I hesitate to call it "criticism") : A map of the full trail was available at one of the first parks, while the photocopy they gave us was good, the full trail map was great. This would have been more helpful to have at "pick up" or even just to communicate to stop and grab one. Reviewing the bikes with the riders might be a nice service. DH managed to ride for about 2 miles in a very challenging gear before he figured it out. Even if you know about gears, each bike is slightly different, and a simple review would have been a plus. From a liability standpoint, I was honestly pretty surprised that they didn't make us reveiw "The Rules of the Road" (signaling, going with traffic, obeying all signage...etc.) We had our very own Claire and Phil moment at the first right turn; but it all worked out. After the hubster went on a bike tour in Cape Town, he got the biking bug and wanted to go riding on the Mt. Vernon Trail. Mind you, I haven't been on a bike since middle school so I was a bit nervous about it, but riding a bike should be like....riding a bike....right? Parking is as usual in Old Town (tough) 'cause there is no parking on location. We walked in, got fitted (sort of) for a bike, and were on our way. The transaction was easy, and we were to pay when we got back. The staff explained that it's extra if you're not back by closing, so plan to come in earlier, especially since the line to check back in can be busy. The bike rental comes with bike lock and helmet, and you can snag a map to the trail if needed. The staff explained some visual markers to look for but thank goodness many others were headed to the same place, otherwise I probably would have ended up by Landmark Mall or something. The bike itself was fine - maybe a little low in tire pressure since some of the bumps were especially bumpy - but I could get everywhere I needed to go. It also had a little water bottle holder, so you could put in your own bottle or buy their bottled water in the store. Checking back in was easy - we charged it to the credit card we checked in with, and we were on our way! read more

I wasted a significant period of time trying to resolve my previous awful situation with Bike and Troll. In short bike and roll is a waste of time. Since I rent bikes a lot for friends when they come to town I tried a different bike shop that was excellent. Big Wheel Bikes is a great place to rent. Don't waste your time on the bozo's at Bike and Roll. After my last review I was contacted by the management at Bike and Roll. I explained the situation expecting positive resolution. I explained that the staff treated customers poorly, and they were utterly incompetent. I booked bikes three weeks out and was promised a confirmation email. It never came. I called three times to confirm. leaving my phone number all three times. I never received a call back. I went into the shop. I was told that an email was sent. I made the employee go through his sent email box to confirm he sent the email. When it was not in his sent email he continued to tell me he sent it. I asked him how that could be, and he actually told me that the email system they used was infected with a virus. Of course there were plenty of other sent emails in his sent box. When I said I didn't feel very good about doing business with Bike and Roll I was pointed to the no refunds policy. Note that I would have no way of knowing this since I never received the promised email confirmation. I actually believed I did not have a reservation because the employee who took my credit card number told me I would have an email confirming my reservation and explaining the process. When I cited the utter lack of communication on the part of your employees I was told I should have scoured their website for the policy. I asked why my three phone calls were never returned they told me my phone number was "in the system wrong." This lead to the obvious question as to why didn't they take down my phone number on the three messages I left. The employee just stared and breathed through his gaping slack jawed mouth. Obviously employees at Bike and Roll are completely incapable of taking a message and returning a call. In a time of record unemployment that they cannot hire someone who is literate enough to take a message and returning a phone call is a sure sign of a business needs to fail. I have never seen a less professional group of inconsiderate morons. I would have fired every one of them had they worked for me, including the one guy who tried to grab me while I was explaining the problem. Maybe a better name for Bike and Roll would be No Bike and Grope. The correct response to a customer who is unhappy is to identify the problem, and find a solution. Instead Bike and Roll employees blamed me. When I did not receive the promised email, and there was no response to my three emails their suggestion was that I drive down their store to talk to someone in person. The problem with that is that both times I did go to their store I waited twenty to thirty minutes to talk to a rude employee. My bottom line is do not waste your time with these guys. If you need to rent a bike in DC go to BIg Wheel just around the corner. read more

We rent the bikes from Alexandria and rode to mount Vernon in George Washington's mansion through a beautiful bike road among the tress following Potomac river down . After the visit in the mansion you choose either to ride back to Alexandria or if you feel exhausted you can hop on to the river boat that cooperates and get back ! Either way you will have a beautiful day !!!! read more

The deal includes helmets, bikes, and bike lock. Your allowed to carry your back pack with you and a cell phone. The guy Mr. V gives you a his contact phone no. if there's an issues you get lost or you have s flat tire he'll either come for you or he'll direct you back to your original destination. If your on a dirt path your on the wrong road. The black and yellow dotted lines are the bike trails. There not much Bike signs around so you have to be alert while riding. The bike ride is around the Potomac River is worth the amount of money spend. It's an 18 mile bike ride through hilly up and down mountains. After that you walk through George Washington's Estate catch the shuttle bus to the Docks. For 1 hour a your on a boat tour sight seeing and headed back to your ride original destination bike and roll. read more

As soon as I walked in the agent greeted me and asked me some questions and then he had the perfect bike me. I was on my way in ten minutes. I biked down to Mount Vernon and back eighteen miles. We found the staff to be very helpful and the bikes were great. We rented 8 bikes (4 kids, 2 adult and 1 tandem) and rode to Mt. Vernon and took the boat back. Very easy to leave the bikes locked up there and just bring the keys back to the storefront. The bikes were great quality, with no problems. We bike all the time where we live, and are very picky about our bikes. This was a great experience. Plus they gave us a discount for saying "Yelp!" I made the reservations on our drive to DC via the phone, and everything was ready and waiting for us when we showed up. Great experience! read more

Terrible customer service. I didn't realize they were strictly a rental shop, and stopped in to ask a repair question about my bike. There were two gentleman who greeted me. One could not have been more rude or hasty to push me out.... as if I was completely in the wrong to have even stepped in his door. The other guy, could not have been more kind, and asked me what the bike issue is. The first guy cut him off, and in front of me (a customer), basically told him to stop talking to me. It's was embarrassing for us both. The kind soul (I believe his name is Darren or Derick or Daniel...) followed me out to direct me to a bike shop around the corner that could possibly help me. Reviewing the Mt. Vernon by bike and boat tour. This outing was my favorite part of our week long trip to D.C. (but I'm an out doors kinda gal). It is a wonderful change from the many days of museums and monuments and yet you still get a little history. We picked up our bikes in Alexandria and biked 9 miles to Mt. Vernon. We caught a lucky break and had fabulous weather with 84 degrees and low to no humidity in August! Most of the trail is flat with just a few challenging hills near the end. The scenery is beautiful along the way. Once we reached Mt. Vernon, we simply locked up our bikes with the lock provided by Bike and Roll then picked up our tickets to Mt. Vernon that were waiting for us at the window. Too bad that the mansion was under repair. The scaffolding was not attractive. But we enjoyed the tour of the mansion and fit in a walk around the property and through the museum (yes, another museum). The only problem we encountered was while at Mt. Vernon, we nearly missed our boat! We pushed our limit and attempted to catch the 3:45 shuttle to the port to catch the 4:00 boat back to National Habor. The shuttle didn't show up. By 3:50, we were starting to panic. A nice gentleman (who turned out to be the propertie's Horticulturist) happened to drive by on his golf cart. He so kindly offered to give us a lift and we made it just in time to get on the water taxi. (We are so grateful to the kind horticulturist for taking time out his busy schedule for us!) So, my advice here is to either catch an earlier shuttle (I'm not sure how often they run) or know exactly how to get to the port by foot. We were very lucky or we would have missed out on the boat. The boat ride was relaxing and the captain entertaining. The entire package was expensive but well worth it. Bike and Roll gave us great directions on how to get where we were going so we never lost our way. Safety was not a concern at all, either. Helmets were provided for our children (a law for under 18) and offered to us as adults. The trails were cleared of debris and are close to neighborhoods and population so there was never a concern there. Great job, Bike and Roll! read more

I rented a road bike, helmet, and lock from the folks at Bike and Roll, and did so because of a money-saving coupon and their opening hour of ten am. After reading some of the other reviews here, I was reluctant to do so, but any reservations I had disappeared when I entered the shop. The staff was professional and courteous, helped me plan a route for a ride from Maryland to Mount Vernon, and provided me with a flat kit free of charge. Insurance was reasonable, and the staff offered to switch my pedals out onto the rental bike. I had a fine ride on safe and working equipment, and although it was off-season, I found the staff professional and eager to help me out. read more

This was my third time using Bike and Roll, second time at this location. I need to provide a disclaimer. I'm from Utah, do a ton of road biking with lots of hills and I was looking to go far and fast. I brought my pedals and cycling shoes from home. The manager and his assistant were fantastic in providing us with decent (probably $1800) road bikes with partial carbon frames and Shimano 105. They switched the pedals for us, gave us fantastic advice to get a 50+ mile in. We did Mount Vernon which is about 10 miles each way. Advice: Be honest about how in shape or out of shape you are. The trail is great, well-marked, slightly crowded on a Saturday in April, and continuous rolling hills with no net elevation gain. We then went north and did the monuments. IMO this is the best way to see all of the monuments if you are ok not stopping to go in (about another 15 total miles). The third part of the ride was a little less predictable but very fun. We did a counterclockwise loop starting on the "4-mile trail loop" and then zigzagging south and east back to the bike shop. The shop is definitely tucked away, busiest when all of show up at opening time especially in good weather. The staff do their best. I've never had a bad experience with these guys. Terrific equipment, great advice, and fantastic customer service. I'll be back. read more

Scored a GroupOn deal for 1/2 off a day bike rental for 2. Went on Memorial Day and had no problem renting a bike. Just signed the waiver and they had a comfort bike waiting and ready to go. Location is right next to the water in Old Town - great starting point to go around Alexandria. We biked west to Port City Brewery. Only reason I say 4 instead of 5 stars is the bike I was on had some difficulty shifting gears; otherwise, was very pleased. read more
