Trek cruisers with comfortable leather saddles
    Catherine B.

My husband and I like to cycle, so we decided to make cycling apart of our summer vacation to Washington, DC. We decided on the Bike and Boat tour out of Old Town Alexandria, as we'd be doing plenty of walking around Mt. Vernon. We arrived at the shop from DC by Metro. We used the transit directions we had, which took us on a bus near the shop. We could also have stopped at the King Street Metro Station and taken the free King Street trolley to the end of the wharf (recommended). The friendly staff had the paperwork ready for the three parties who were taking the trip that day. They confirmed that we were who they thought we were, and we filled out the necessary legalese. We were issued Trek bikes in good shape with comfortable leather saddles, helmets, U-locks and keys, and a map of the area with the trail marked. The trail was easy to find, and there were several signs along the way to guide us through Old Town. This is a pedestrian-friendly city--foot, dogs, and bikes are all very much welcomed. After finding the trail, we were off for a wonderfully scenic ride along the Potomac, where nature and sailboats abounded. The trail was well-maintained and crossed roads very few times. It is a well-used track, with many cyclists and joggers out that day. Most were courteous to each other. Upon arrival at Mt. Vernon, we located some bike racks just beyond the first parking lot and locked our bikes. We then proceeded along the path to enjoy our day at Mt. Vernon, stopping first in one of the shops along the way to cool off before additional touring outdoors on the very warm day. We toured the mansion, grounds, museums, and short films throughout. We had packed our own lunch, and bought chips, drinks and ice cream there. We returned by scenic ferry, viewing the National Harbor (MD) and Old Town by boat. My husband and I both love being out on the water, so this was another highlight. We met a family of 6 on the boat, who had also taken the same tour. They, too, had only good things to say about their experience. After debarking from the ferry, we returned our keys and accepted our free, cold water bottle, courtesy of a Yelp coupon. We walked along King Street, enjoying a few shops that were still open (Many shops close at 6PM). We ate dinner and continued up the street to the Metro station. Another fun-filled day that we would recommend to locals and vacationers alike!

Terrible customer service. A half-awake staff (at 11:30 am) that seemed annoyed to do their job. Not helpful in the slightest.

I had been less than enthusiastic since our last tandem bike jaunt in DC left me ragged and looking forward to the end. We rented a tandem bike from a known rental in DC; the bike was rickety and took effort even on the completely flat route we were on. My GF found Pedego and opted for the tandem electric bike. This was a 180 degree experience from the other rental company jn DC. The owner was friendly, attentive, enthusiastic and really made us feel welcome. He knows his bikes gave us a quick run down that made us feel comfortable. The bikes are impeccabley maintained and he's thought of everything including helmets, storage pouch, bike lock, flat tire kit etc. He was even extremely well versed on the route to Mt. Vernon. Every pointer he gave us was spot on. We made it to Mt. Vernon and enjoyed food, history, and culture. The way back was fun since the bike did all the work, electric is the way to go for tandem bike long hauls. I plan on coming back to buy some accessories for my own fat tire e-bikes. This was a memorable experience that was easy and affordable.

Conte's was my local bike shop for a few years, and they generally deliver even if the prices frequently prove higher than they quote you. However, when Sean convinces you to splurge for the annual service, and you weigh whether you can afford to spend $229, and then he says, "actually it'll be $282 after parts and fees", do not agree to make an investment at Conte's without a written receipt. At checkout it becomes $334, Sean will pretend he doesn't remember your previous conversation. Barb will say, "they must have called you to confirm an increase", and when you show you were not called, she will forget about this policy and the price will stay whatever they invent. Time to try Velocity Bike Collective.

Knowing we only had less than 2 days to tour the monuments, in addition to the fact that my mother in her older age doesn't have as many steps in her as she used to - I was trying to get creative with our schedule to make the most of our time. A quick google search helped me land on this company. I always forget that the monuments in DC are quite spread out. Being on a bike is definitely your best option. I emailed the company on a Tuesday night before our trip and had a response immediately the next morning. Our guide Robert was very thorough, friendly, and flexible with our schedule. He also gave us a great suggestion to skip the Air and Space museum as part of it was under construction. He definitely knows DC quite well. He met us on the tail end of our visit at the Natural History museum and over the course of 3 hours we were able to see the Washington monument, Jefferson memorial, Mason memorial, MLK, Lincoln, Korean War, Vietnam War, and finally ended near the White House. We also would have had time for one more if we didn't take a break for lunch. Highly highly recommend this if your needs are similar to what I described above. Robert will give you a lot of historical context along the way.

If you have ever ridden a Segway you will know they are fun and sure beat walking everywhere, especially in dc. The draw back: being stuck with people in your tour group who have a hard time picking it up. I have done several tours and i will tell you, you will see as much on tour as your slowest segwayer will allow. Knowing this I googled rentals and I found DC Segway Rentals and spoke to a really nice guy. Not only did he have availability but HE ALSO CAME TO US. Within half an hour of calling we were on our segways taking in the sites at our own pace, seeing what we wanted to see and staying places as long as we wanted to stay. Aaron... the guy we spoke too was a great resource as DC had changed alot since I lived there. Let us know about the new MLK memorial and a couple new restaurants. In the two hours we reserved we saw absolutely everything there is to see on the mall. We even put down our segway and grabbed a quick ice cream. We even made it to the Jefferson and just hung out on the steps taking in the view. Amazing all around. If you are in DC this is a must, significantly better than doing a tour, especially if you have some segway experience. We be back for sure
