WILL RENEGE ON AGREED PRICES. Best get prices in writing... Conte's was my local bike shop for a few years, and they generally deliver even if the prices frequently prove higher than they quote you. However, when Sean convinces you to splurge for the annual service, and you weigh whether you can afford to spend $229, and then he says, "actually it'll be $282 after parts and fees", do not agree to make an investment at Conte's without a written receipt. At checkout it becomes $334, Sean will pretend he doesn't remember your previous conversation. Barb will say, "they must have called you to confirm an increase", and when you show you were not called, she will forget about this policy and the price will stay whatever they invent. I brought my bike in to Conte's in April for a spring tune up. Cost me almost $300 but I had them check several things. Two rides after my tune up, my back tire failed. A few months later my handle bar wrap started to move, came unraveled and the plug at the end of the bar fell out. Clearly installed shoddily. Small things like not removing the Cat's Eye speedometer from the handle bars and front tire were not done either. But worst, when I asked if they would simply repair the handle bar wrap, they said it wouldn't be "covered." Avoid this shop. It's a ripoff terrible customer service. They lost a long-term customer that spends hundreds of dollars a year because they wouldn't spend 10 minutes fixing an easy problem. When small businesses are begging for business it's strange that Conte's would be so callous toward a long-time, good-paying customer. read more

I don't really know what to make of my experience, hence 2 stars. I called ahead bc my tires were flat and was told I could bring my bike in for them to look at it. Once I got there, the employee told me that the inner tube of one of my tires was busted and I'd need a new one. Seeing as this is a bike shop, I asked if they had any so I could get it fixed. He went in the back to look and came back and told me that they didn't have any. I asked if I could leave the bike for later repair and was told that they would not be getting any inner tubes because the type I needed was so popular that they are hard to come by. Huh?? It seems like a bike repair shop would order additional inner tubes at some point. The employee then told me what size and type of inner tube I needed so that I could order it online myself and then bring it back to the shop for them to install. Again, HUH? I took it in stride though bc I thought maybe this was something common in the bike repair industry. The next day, however, I called another bike shop in town and they replaced the inner tube and re-inflated the other tire in less than 15 mins. So yeah, my experience at Conte was a little odd. read more

Poor customer service. We came in looking to buy a bike for my kid. The guy helping us was unfocused on the sale and kept walking away to help other customers, making us wait and feel unwelcome. He also couldn't tell us much about the product, components, etc. and suggested we look at the website, which he proceeded to pull up on a big screen. On the website, it listed a sale price for the bike we were interested in that was different than the tag price. When I inquired about whether the bike was on sale, he seemed confused. He ended up telling us that the lower price appeared to be for a different color. The difference wasn't nothing: the tag price was $100 higher! I asked him if they could honor the sale price because a paint job is not worth $100 more. That's when he called in a manager who was so abrupt and rude about it that I was taken aback. He admitted the only difference was the paint color and that the bikes were identical. As to a discount or any wiggle room on the price of the bike in front of us? His words to me were, "Absolutely not" and he acted offended that I would even ask. His snarky reaction - not spending the extra money - was the deal breaker for me. If he had been polite about it or even just offered an apology for the confusion, this review would look quite different. But he was basically like, "Take it or leave it." So we left it. And they lost our business for good. We went Spokes Etc. (now Trek) in Belle Haven, got fantastic service, and bought a bike for the same price as the *non-discounted* bike we were looking at. Conte's was clearly not motivated to close a deal with us and I'm more than happy that we decided to go elsewhere. read more

TLDR: customer for life! I've gotten back into cycling after a 12+year hiatus. One of my top priorities was to find MY local bike shop (aka LBS). While restocking my supplies, updating my cycling gear, and looking for a new, second bike, I must've spent several hundred dollars each at about 6-8 shops in the Alexandria (and DC) area. There were a couple I didn't make a second trip to, a couple that I gave too many second chances to, and a couple of very good ones that I would feel confident using again. But the one that blew me away (and this was no small feat given how well the runner up bike shop did) was Conte's at the Old Town Alexandria location. Brian and team are building something really special there. So much so, I caught myself wishing they sold other things... like toasters, gardening supplies, produce, auto parts... you name it. Because whatever they sold you know they'd sell quality stuff with great customer service and would stand 100% behind their products. They proved to me they really meant that they wanted me to be 100% happy with my purchase. Case in point: I had a rare factory parts failure on my recently purchased bike. It wasn't just that they made it 100% right (they did that instantly w/o a second thought!) it was how they went about it. They didn't rest until they did a full root cause analysis of what went wrong with the failure, showing me step by step in great detail their troubleshooting approach and process. In subsequent visits as we've fine tuned my bike, each visit is an education and I'm really grateful for their patience with the time they've spent with me. Anyway, get out there and do your research when searching for your LBS. All our needs are different so what works for me may not work for you but you owe it to yourself to at least give Conte's Alexandria a shot for your next cycling purchase. read more

I went into the shop today a bike. Yesterday (13 Aug) I stopped into Contes to get information on a gravel bike - Cannondale Topstone 4 - and was shown a picture and told to do some research online. I felt like that was a strange response but I also felt like it was endearing since I wasn't getting pushed a bike on me. I did my research and found that for the money and my time constraint, that bike would be my best fit. The person at Contes told me yesterday that I would need to put 20% down and the bike would have to be transferred and arrive in about a week. Today, credit card ready, I headed into Contes to make the purchase. At first, I was told they couldn't transfer a bike because with was too far. I brought up the fact that yesterday I was told I could put 20% down and that the bike would be transferred. The staff deliberated that and then told me it would incur a $95 transfer fee but they would have to check with the manager tomorrow. I've never been to a more disorganized shop that literally allowed a sale to walk out the door. Previous reviews have shown the poor service and I should have taken heed. I am new to the area but imagine there are better options. My advice, stay away from Contes. read more

When we asked the gentleman what he recommends, he told us this place is for experienced bike riders and we don't have anything that would be for you. Wow, thanks guys. We decided to go to Trek in Springfield and they never made us felt we weren't experienced enough to help us get fitted for a bike there. Maybe the guy who greeted us was having a bad day but it definitely left a sour taste in our mouth and wouldn't want to step in that store for anything again. first met the mechanics at this shop from tweaking my bike during "Bike to Work" events. after witnessing their expertise there, i began stopping in for routine repairs or adjustments when commuting to work in old town. not many shops that still offer this immediate adjustment type service for those of us out riding when we encounter issues. so, it was this type of attention to my bike needs which kept me coming back. so during a pandemic, i was hesitant to go anywhere really. but they set up safe distance markers on the floor and staff is PPE'd. better yet, they are just as attentive to customer needs as if no global pandemic is happening. no matter, the laser focus of the mechanics help them to quickly assess the situation in order to determine whether you need to leave your bike or if they can swiftly get you back on your way. ***to Justine B, you have yet to realize the parts shortage that COVID has created in the bike industry. sick ppl not reporting to work means no one to manufacturer or ship inner tubes.*** i built a bike this summer and it took weeks (get it Justine B) and weeks for parts to be delivered. i picked up the frame August 3, but had to source parts literally from all over the globe. the shop also did a search and would not have been able to get parts delivered until October. during the build, i popped by b/c the Panaracer manufactured tires (branded as Soma Cazadero) need a blast from higher compression air pump to seat on the rims. NO CHARGE and they immediately attended to that quick job. popped in a 2nd time when i could not get the 11-42 cassette to lock tightly. the mech showed me the very thin space which remained on the axle and said that a simple spacer would fix that. again, no charge! while i waited in line for my turn with the mechs, i also looked at some of the sale items, like the combo Ergon pink saddle and grips for $80! wish i had needed that great set up for any of my bikes as that's a steal. they have accessories like bottle cages/mirrors/bar tape, also tools, and helmets and other must haves. once the brakes (the longest item to wait for delivery) finally arrived, i dropped Bombtrack Betty off. bringing in my own sourced parts for install, after 7 days, i got the call she was ready to roll. the internally routed cables looked exceptional (down tube through to chain stays) and the chain (which i know how to do but didn't want it smacking the frame until the cable tension could be secured) was cut to length and taut. the shifting was mostly fine, though i noticed some smack until engaging the "clutch" on the rear d. nice upgrade to the GRX RDs. for all the above, i find the cost more than reasonable. and at pick up, the mech took an extra minutes to explain some of the idiosyncrasies of my TRP Hy/Rd brakes. even explained having adjusted the headset, which was been loose ever since i corrected the previous owners use of too many spacers (it was higher than the manufacturers rx 35mm stack) below the stem. grateful. not to mention - the shop has online mechanics who swiftly attended to my questions and validated my concerns when i became neurotic - common during bike builds apparently. that service alone is priceless! Conte's does the first cable stretch adjustment FREE of CHARGE as well. for me, that happened quick - within 100 miles. but I also was concerned about the noise from the brake cable housing inside the frame. the mech explained that between the rattling and the fact the install is a pain, and no access for repairs/redo's, internal routed cables are the bane of bike mechanics day. *wish* i had known that rattle would be a thing as i'd have brought along cable foam that the mech rx i try. so, i sourced pool noodle foam cut length wise and - with the fork/bars removed - slid it into the down tube to where the internal smacking occurred. Voila! no more brake cable noise. i believe this shop is the most professional i have ever visited. their prices are competitive and they are eager to help bikers understand the rationale for repairs as well as what's best for each bike. read more

(only provide store credit or gift cards) - Untrained staff. - They change out their front staff every few months, so you can't build trust with the shop. Conte's Bike Shop is a convenient shop in Alexandria, VA that's on my regular riding paths. I typically swing by there to pick up a few items in preparation for longer rides and even bought some expensive riding electronics. However, to put it simply, they don't care about their customers - and they're annoyingly only interested in pushing their own inventory and services. As a matter of fact, I mistakenly decided to choose them to do some maintenance on my bike for a part upgrade for the very first time. The work order wasn't successful due to me buying a incompatible part. But instead of helping me find a alternative, they had the audacity to charge me for labor without explanation as to why it didn't work and then heckle me for not buying parts at 25% mark up from their store/suppliers. They did not even know what the issue was... and they thought I should trust them to select parts for me... Yeah right... Bottom line: If your not interested in buying bikes, Conte's has no interest in you or building a relationship with you. Customer service is seriously lacking. I have done a lot of shopping before deciding to purchase new Specialized Vita and Cannondale bikes. The manager Brian and and his staff were great. I fell totally in love with my specialized, however, cannondale was not comfortable to ride. After two weeks of purchase, we came back to the store, and Brian offered us to exchange to a different bike that we purchased. The second bike was more comfortable and much cheaper. Although, we were a bit disappointed that we were not able to get refund of the difference in money (the store can only give the customers gift card but no direct refund on the card), we were pleased with how Brian helped us with choosing the right bikes. When shopping for bikes, I wasn't looking at price as much as I was feeling out the staff and different bike shops. They were great. Their prices were great, too, but I could tell I would get good customer service just by making several trips in there to look for a bike. I'm glad I did! Every time we are coming to the store, the manager always makes sure we leave satisfied and with the exact item we need. He ALWAYS takes time to assist us. If you want to be taken care of after the sell, don't shop anywhere else. Great people working there! read more

Really great service! They clearly see some fancy bikes come through (the one on the tune up stand when I came in had a two thousand dollar frame), but that didn't stop them from giving my poor old 1966 craigslist Schwinn cruiser some much needed love. I bought a new rack and paid the extra $15 to have it installed by them in-shop: highest return on $15 I've ever experienced. All hands were on deck to do a custom install that involved drilling holes, swapping bolts and some serious man handling. I should say lady handling though - Becky did a fantastic, beautiful job and I would never have been able to do it myself at home. While I was there, I got some great practical advice, an awesome grocery pannier, and she even pointed out some potential safety issues. I want to like this bike store. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable and their selection is pretty good. They have a really good mechanic who has been at it for 35 years. He is a wealth of knowledge on older bikes. However, I took a wheel there and had them remove a freewheel. A 30 second job. They charged me $28 dollars to do it. When I asked about it the employee said they didn't set the prices. Most stores would have done it for free considering it is nothing for them. It's really unfortunate that they operate that way. I really want to support the local bike shop but I won't be returning. read more

Worst experience I've had in a long time! I've never felt so scrutinized by anyone in a customer service position. My friend and I walked in just to browse because we belong to a local biking group and I wanted to look for a new bike. The gentleman (and I use that loosely) quickly asked us if we were looking for anything and our response was that we were browsing. He immediately asked if "he could help us find anything in particular" and I politely let him know AGAIN we were fine and he proceeds to say "Well, you don't come into a bike store to look for nothing, what are you looking for?!" as he swiftly began to approach us. I told my friend it's time to go and we left immediately. We left feeling inferior, insulted and confused on why we were approached in such horrible and aggressive manner being that we were simply out trying to enjoy ourselves. I would never enter or recommend this place to anyone in my bike club or anyone I know because of this experience. read more

I always have a great experience while visiting Conte's in Old Town, Alexandria. Whenever I walk in the shop, a staff member always greets me and offers assistance. Recently I noticed a flaw in my Cannondale frame and pursued a warranty claim through Conte's. While I had to be patient, Bill went to great depths to pursue the issue for me. He also helped me order several parts, which are currently not so easy to come by. When the parts arrived at the shop, someone called me right away. Long story short I picked out a pair of shoes and cleats then asked if they would put them on for me. Well they did, but just mounted the cleat. When asked if he would adjust them for me he said "yeah for 50 bucks" When I asked why so much he basically said I was paying for his time, which i get. I have bought shoes and cleats and have had them fitted for free before. What blew my mind after I questioned him about the price was his response, "or you could not buy them" Guess what I didn't buy them and will never go in there again. Purchased combo Lezyne light 3 days earlier. The headlight was not changing modes. Only high and low, supposed to have 8 modes. The first gentleman tried very hard to convince me that it only had (2) modes. I explained to him it clearly says on the back it has 8 modes. Explained to me that I needed to speak with owner. The owner as well tried to tell me there were only two modes. He tried to tell me that the hire end models have the other modes. (NO) He tried it on another pack and realized I was correct. Finally acknowledged he was wrong. I told him i did not want the light anymore. I was gonna purchased another brand. The Lezyne cost $100.00 wasn't reassuring not working correctly from the get go. Manager asked what i was thinking of purchasing and told me that the brand i mentioned was (garbage). He explained to me that the store policy is (no cash refund) I was not aware off. When i found this out i realized i had no option but was hoping to get refund since i had purchased a defective expensive item only 3 day earlier. Owner told me he could give me store credit or have corporate mail me refund check that would take around 3 weeks. Since I live in different state I did not mine waiting for a check. Owner or manager grabbed another light and told me he was gonna exchange it only. What happened to the (Corporate Check)??? He to told me it would cost corporate to much money to send me a check. Okay. I thought to myself (that was your idea). Needless to say. I realized that the receipt said no cash refund. I was just trying to see if the store would give me a break. There was no need for the unnecessary sarcasm and trying to convince a consumer that i was wrong and the product was working correctly. read more
