It's a bit messy, lots of trash by the exterior door, it's pricey at between $7.50/9.50 for a honey iced latte. The oat milk upcharge is pricey. They do make in house sweeteners and that's a plus. Cozy coffee shop just off of campus, that is perfect for studying or catching up with a group of friends! I highly recommend trying out their muffins. If you are adventurous, try the surprisingly good chocolate chip and thyme muffin (the result is earthy, sweet, and a bit savory). But you'll love the blueberry and the other flavors for those who'd rather play it safe. The coffee is great, with a rotating selection of seasonal drinks (I had The Grinch on 12/5/24, aka vanilla matcha w/ oat milk). The price is average of what you'd get in the area. A super quiet place, especially for a university area, where the more serious come to study and whisper. It used to be difficult to find where Bordertown was but now with signage from two streets and a well marked entrance it's a walk in. Classic woodwork from another era, huge picture windows, a fireplace takes us back to a much earlier time. Oh the coffee? Not the greatest but the moist breads and pastries make up for the so so brew. The work space behind the counter into a kitchen is tiny and I'm not sure how two workers can fit in without tension..I did see a little stress and evil eye as who is going to do what when. read more

I work on the University of Minnesota campus very close to Bordertown, and it's our staff's favorite spot to pick up a coffee to go! The pastries are also delicious, they always have different muffin flavors rotating throughout the seasons. I recommend the banana bread, it's incredibly buttery! The shop itself is cute, quiet, and cozy. There are a few small tables and couches, so sometimes it's hard to find a spot to sit and study or have a meeting, which is why we usually take our drinks to go. One thing to note is since they don't have many staff working behind the counter, the service is very slow. If you're second or third in line you can expect to wait up to 10-15 minutes for your drink. It's delicious and we're happy to support it, but know that it won't be a quick stop! read more

Decided on an Iced Coffee ($4) and a slice of Banana Bread ($3ish). The banana bread is warmed up before serving - a fresh, slightly doughy, slice with small bits of nuts mixed in. Liked the flavor and balanced out well alongside the bitter coffee. The true selling point here is the ambiance. Well lit interior, plenty of seating, and an overall quiet place to spend the morning. The building is formerly a fraternity house on the campus of the University of Minnesota that is tucked away just off of University Blvd & 15th Street. Bordertown is sort if deceiving to the eyes- not so small & confined. The seating area opens up into a large area (felt like a European beer hall setting) for students & non-students to kick back and relax/study and enjoy some really good coffee blends. Bordertown does serve an array of sandwiches and other snacks here. Be patient with the sandwiches (takes a bit of time to make). While there seems to be parking directly out front, don't be surprised if its full. I had to park on the street, and pay $2 at the meter to ensure that the meter maid didn't ticket me. Certainly a good coffee spot alternative than the usual suspects of Starbucks, Dunkin, and Caribou when visiting the University of Minnesota and subsequent Dinkytown area. read more

Really liked this location as a cozy spot to get work done! One star is missing because the wifi has been inconsistent for me and recently I had trouble getting it to connect at all, and the wifi was the main reason I was there. Food/drink quality-wise, I was very happy!! My rosemary chocolate chip muffin was a little cold as if it had been frozen overnight instead of baked fresh this morning, but the flavor was really unique and yummy! The muffins are also pretty dense and filling, so it was a solid breakfast for me. The coffee is good and there's a great selection of specialty latte drinks to choose from! Even though this place is literally an old house on a side street, the food is so amazing and the ambience inside is super cute and cozy!! I come here for breakfast sometimes, and all of the fresh baked goods blow me away, plus I've heard that the coffees are really nice as well. Found out about this little gem on Yelp and decided to check it out. It's tucked a way behind the frat row, so just use google if you're not sure where it is. The interior is cozy and quaint, make excellent coffee shop vibe. Everyone is usually studying or working which makes it a motivating study environment whenever I come here to study. The reviews on here is what got me to first visit Bordertown and I'm happy to report - I was not disappointed! It was a little hard for me to find because it really just looks like any of the other little houses in the neighborhood. The entrance is on the left side if you're facing it (it took me an embarrassing amount of time to find it). Starting with the menu - they have all your coffee standards and basics and not too much outside of that. I typically go with my standard hazelnut latte. The coffee is excellent, one of my favorites so far in Minneapolis, and definitely the best in Dinkytown. They serve lunch from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm. I've ordered the bacon biscuit sandwich which has thick cut bacon - soooo good! The side salad is an option for all of the lunch options or a bag of chips. I get the side salad because it's really yummy! I'm not well-salad-versed enough the dressing they use but it's refreshing! Their portions are also a good amount of food, nothing outrageous but also not bird food. The service is also always good! Not the stand out for this place for me but they do their job and they're nice! The dining area is darker than I would ideally like it to be but there is a large window and plenty of seating options. I like when cafes have both couch seating and table seating. Bordertown has plenty of both as well as high tables and low tables. Would highly recommend to anyone in Minneapolis! read more

First time here. Was very happy to find this place. The eye of the tiger was good but I tried my friends drink, a golden latte, and it was super good. They even did it iced for her and it turned out nice. This looks like a good place to go to study or work. Tons of seating, really relaxed atmosphere. Location, atmosphere, great bevies, not elitist, friendly coffeehouse on 16th (U of M campus). It's on the main floor (only) of an old frat house, made into a delightful spot! Yes, it takes a little longer than McDonalds but they actually create the drink you're enjoying! They really had me at the pastries (nothing looked like I wouldn't eat & enjoy). Comfortable feel to the place-I didn't feel alone. The ONLY thing wrong is that the bicycle parking rack was full - what a great thing to have! I'm planning my next visit here by bicycle with my friends later when the campus is quiet. p.s. This is the perfect place to come work, study, or curl up with a book - it's super cozy and has plenty of seating. Also try their London Fog or any of their speciality drinks! A great spot to study and have off site meetings. So Bordertown blends in with Dinkytown so well that you would think it is one of the fraternity houses. I learned about Bordertown through a coworker when I was at 17th. It is a good place to support a local business as well not have to go into the main part of Dinkytown to get caffine needs met. Nice thing about Bordertown is that you are usually able to get seating to study or have a meeting. Bordertown is one of the cafe that closes by 5pm, so it is a great day time cafe. I usual get the tea and when the barisita offers I take the customized iced tea. It just takes a bit longer as it needs to seeps. It is so good though. There bake goods are good as well, the day I usual go the quiche is not available. The one I tried was great though. Decent cafe, I come and set up a meeting with folks here if I want a spot off campus. read more

This is a great place to go if you want to get some work done. They have free wifi (albeit a little unreliable at times), plenty of seating, and outlets by the walls. I'd recommend their matcha latte, cafe miel, and mocha. This is also located in Dinkytown, which is really close to the University of Minnesota for all you college students out there! Love Bordertown! It's in an old frat house so it definitely has a homey, living room vibe to it with string lights, lamps and nooks. It's typically crowded but with headphones and the right amount of lighting, it's a better bet than some other dimly lit coffee shops. There's usually music playing but I end up having headphones in when I study, anyway. In terms of drinks, they are pretty good. I think it's awesome that they are a non-profit that provides ethically sourced coffees. I love the miel but Tiger's eye is also good. They also sell pastries, soups, and sandwiches. Never tried anything else but the pastries were good. Only downside, aside from the fact that it can get overly busy, is that sometimes the frat start playing music and that makes it a little harder to focus. read more

It's a super cute place tucked away among University buildings. I'm glad they had signs pointing to the place, it is hard to find unless you have GPS or can afford to wander around a little while. I ordered a mint tea and, although delicious, was a little sad looking compared to the usual bouquets of large tea bags you get at other places. It's definitely has a rickety charm to it. I noticed a bit of a smell -- but if you like the smell of old books, then it's perfect for you. I'm not as much of a fan. I thought about using the outdoor patio tables, but it was really loud with the street traffic. Not a place I would come back to. BUT I could see it being attractive to others. read more

I discovered Bordertown shortly after my internship started in Minneapolis this summer. It's a little hard to find even though it's directly across from my apartment as it is hidden inside an old frat house. This is seriously one of the most beautiful coffeehouses I've ever been to. Some of the tables are arranged near windows where you can get work done while still getting sunlight. A very nice bonus for the summer time! It's worth finding this place. The only thing that I would change is I wish it were open on weekends in the summer time- but it's very understandable that it's not because I don't think there are many U of M students around on the weekends in the summer. It would definitely help motivate me to study for my summer courses on the weekends though. Also, great coffee. Pretty much crucial for a coffeehouse. This is my absolute favorite coffee shop in the Twin Cities. They pay attention to every little detail here, down to making sure the Bordertown logo on the mug is facing you when you pick it up from the counter. I mostly get coffee, which I think is "cheap" compared to a lot of other Twin Cities coffee shops (5.40 for a latte? in this economy? insane!) and I got a muffin once, which I enjoyed. Seating is a tad limited, but usually opens up while you're waiting for your coffee. The venue itself is adorable: it's a converted frat house that has the original woodwork and bay windows. It's a little off the beaten path, but they've really uped the signage and now it's a wonderful day if I get to visit Bordertown. read more

This place has a really cool story. It's an old fraternity house turned nonprofit coffee shop. You can see the pictures of the renovations on the walls of the shop. Coffee is not outstanding, but the ambiance (especially on a cold, snow Minnesota afternoon) makes Bordertown a great place to go and get work done. It's better to come in early in the morning and claim your spot because tables are hard to come by! One quick note: Bordertown's wifi can be sketchy sometimes. After betting with Sara W, we discovered that this place does, in fact, exist. At first look, it appears that this place is simply a creepy "open" sign in some fratboy's bedroom! And it is actually a former frat...turned into a coffee shop! Although it used to be a frat, it does not smell like stale beer and dirty boys. (Which is a good thing!) This is probably the coziest coffee shop around Dinkytown! A little less well-known, with the home-y atmosphere that many area cafes seem to lack. There are comfy chairs, high-top tables, and individual tables with plenty of convenient outlets. Also, with a group of 4 or more, you can reserve their conference-esque room for free! (Except during the lunch hour). Perfect for working on a group project! I ordered their Cold Press Mocha (made with espresso instead of coffee) and it was delicious!! Next time I am definitely ordering one of the baked goods or quiches that are made in-house. They looked scrumptious! read more
